His team can't win a game now. They may not win a game the rest of the year and the football team can't buy a win either. All thanks to the scandal that broke out.

i wish I had a witty reply to this moronic thread
coach k is still a great, erm, motivator, but his x's and o's have been complete crap for about ten years now.

As a Mizzou fan, I'd like to suggest Quin Snyder as a possible replacement. Duke grad who won 100+ games at Mizzou (end sarcasm).
I'm always amused by the squeaky clean image that Coach K and the Duke program receives in general. Here's a story from a MU assistant coach regarding some of Coach K's antics. Note that this happens a lot more in college athletics than most people would ever admit.
I was in Vegas 2 summers ago(at a AAU tourney) when Duke and UCLA were bidding on Taylor King in the stands of a Southern Cal All Stars AAU game. They were in the middle of quite a few coaches and Coach K was screaming and everyone could hear him. They got up to 250K before UCLA pulled out. Then Coach K's assistant worked out where to send the money. Everyone heard this and Duke could have cared less... they aren't going to get in trouble. Yes, that is how Quin was brought up to do college bball business. Thankfully he didn't do the same things at Mizzou.

Quin part: Not at all.
Recruiting part: Actually true.
I generally have no favorite in regards to that rivalry down there in North Carolina. MU fans hate Coach K because he failed to make Quin into a coach and we hate North Carolina because of Roy and the fact that a home-state kid named Tyler (who actually grew up a Mizzou fan) shunned the home state school for North Carolina.

I'd love to know how you're sure it's "actually true."
I'm not saying stuff like that doesn't happen, I just question it being so out in the open, where any unknown reporter could hear it, who would love to make a name for himself by trying to bring down a figure like Coach K.

Oh, please don't. State shouldn't be punished for something Duke did.

Obviously, I can't give you a recording to give you absolute proof. I know a couple of the assistant coaches and they wouldn't say something like that if it weren't true. Roy is even worse. Obviously, some of the minor things Roy did are the reason they're now on probation. Roy Williams is the reason that MU was on probation and OU is currently on probation. He ratted them out for their violations. It's not just a coincidence that KU just recently went on probation for NCAA violations. The other coaches got tired of his hypocrisy and spilled the beans on his violations.

I may be naive, but I can't see anything like this happening. There are way too many people more than willing to hurt Duke for this to happen and Coach K get away with it.

You're only naive if you think no extra benefits are given to players at all. I'm 100% sure parents get better jobs, better houses (or huge price breaks), and other considerations. But openly bidding on a player by screaming at the top of your lungs? Sorry Mizzou, but like I said earlier, your assistant coach buddies went over the top with this.

If he keeps losing I'd love for them to extend his contract. :)

So am I. I've hated the Duke basketball program ever since the Christian Laettner chest-stomping incident and Coach K's complete non-reaction. That showed his hypocrisy to me a long time ago.

That's fine. Remove the screaming part and it's probably a pretty accurate picture.
I find it amusing that someone posted that it couldn't have happened because others would have ratted out Coach K. All the rest of the people were doing the bidding as well. If they ratted out K, you can be sure he'd take them down with them. These guys have a great gig coaching a game for millions of dollars. They're not going to ruin that just to rat out a guy fully knowing that they'd get taken down in return.

There are two types of college coaches.
The guy who'll do anything to win
and
The guy that's going to get fired
Everybody talks about wanting a clean program, but given the way recruiting works and the money involved, truly clean programs normally finish towards the bottom of the conference.

I'll even take it a step further. It's best that most college fans remain blissfully ignorant or ignore just how much money/cheating is involved in college athletics. If it ever came out, it would really ruin the college sports (especially football and basketball) for a lot of people.

To be fair, the picture you described (presumably) took place in a gym that wasn't only full of coaches doing the bidding, the AAU coaches being paid off, the sneaker companies who do most of the pushing, and the players receiving the benefits. That leaves plenty of other guilt-free people who could tell a reporter the story, allowing the reporter to attend the next tourney and get some decent info, or at least begin snooping around.
Since we've pretty much agreed that your story was, at the very least, exaggerated, I'll move on to your next topic:

I'd guess that most fans are blissfully ignorant that their team is the one that's cheating, or are at least dismissive that the benefits the players are getting is substantial enough to be considered "cheating." Like I said earlier, you're simply naive if you don't think anything is being exchanged besides an athletic scholarship. These are facts:
- AAU teams/coaches are associated with sneaker companies through sponsorships and other financial arrangements.
- College teams, and more specifically, their coaches, are engaged in contracts with these same companies.
There's a connection that can't possibly be ignored.
Put me in the camp that ignores the cheating, simply because I really don't care. The cheating hasn't stopped Cinderellas from making runs in the tourney, and hasn't stopped the atmosphere that's present in college arenas.

I think I was more making the point that some college fans remain steadfast in their belief that college athletics are 'amateur' sports with nothing more than scholarships being awarded. I think if they knew what went on, they'd probably have some drop in interest knowing that everything isn't all peaches and cream.

Don't worry I'm sure the "slumping" Blue Devils will still be able to put some serious hurt on the Terps when they come to the Comcast Center on Sunday. :(
I'm actually of the mind that either a) Gary Williams needs to be let go and a coach who can coach "stars" gets hired OR b) Gary needs to learn how to coach higher-level recruits than he had in a previous life (Juan Dixon, etc). But that's a different thread.

coach k's duke program will never be put on probation for the same reason lou holtz's notre dame teams were never put on probation...it would cause so much damage to the reputation of the entire sport that the NCAA would never allow it.
the average fan would say "gosh, if those nice white boys at duke that espn loves are cheating, the whole thing must be filthy!"
the duke lie is too valuable for the ncaa to ever compromise it by, say, punishing them for the red-handed thing with maggette or investigating the cushy jobs that were gifted to unqualified parents like carlos boozer's dad and chris duhon's mother.

err, how is it the wicked roy williams' fault that missouri hired a cocaine-addled cheat like quin snyder? wasn't the dean of the university letting a player who sexually assaulted someone live in his house? stuff like that is just begging to get investigated, it doesn't take any secret agenda from opposing coaches to bring that on.
institutional control has never been a strength of the missouri basketball program, I don't see what it has to do with kansas or roy williams. same goes for oklahoma.

Interesting. Not factual, but interesting.
you forgot to mention the part about roy williams fixing the kansas board of education's vote to ensure they teach creationism, and littering the state of missouri with shoney's resturaunts so that its children would grow up as fat slobs.
as far as ricky clemons, you're right...it wasn't sexual assault but regular old assault and battery of his girlfriend. the facts should be in order now.

If you people think Coah Anti-Christ is spending $250K for the likes of Taylor King you are f*9king deranged. There are ways to give extra beenfits to players but there is absolutely no way to hide that kind of money in a college basketball budget without throwing out HUGE red flags.
Come on people.
