Just started thinking today about what country/league to play.
I've played leagues in Norway, Poland, England, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Brazil in the past. I like to take a low level team and work my way up through a couple jobs to get to the bigger teams.
I really like playing the French and German leagues for some reason. I may have to start there this time.......

So you play the same teams every time? I must have a low loyalty rating. I switch every career.

Me too. I'll probably start unemployed in England, and see what Conference North/South team opens up. I like working my way up -- although the highest I've ever got was League One!

debating...i feel like it might be time for a glorious return to Rosenborg or Herenveen.
UK Conference North to start with, i have even decided the team, Newport County as i like their orange uniform :D
Once i get tired i'll start a game in the Spanish lowest division, 2B, probably with Rayo Vallecano that is a special team, the only one with a woman as owner that has even reached 1st division and european competitions some years ago but that is deep in the 2B now.
I always start from the bottom and play the game as a new amateur coach who wants to improve and reach the fame, there is no fun at all for me on playing with a 1st division team in any country, too much money to expend and you can get all the players that you want. I prefer to struggle and to enjoy every win in a conference team like if it was the Champions League. I also adopt the Low League Manager rules to play in a realistic way.
One of the things i always do is that once i have choosen the team to start with, i try to learn about it, visit their website, read about their history, their fans etc. It usually takes me a few hours before i even launch the game.

They'll be my first two choices, I may go with a random from 30 nations career once or twice after that

I might go back to a Harrogate career to start. If not, I'll do a random North or South Conference Team. Also, I might do an MLS Career.

I always play with Spurs (Tottenham) for at least one career... Usually I try several other careers (unemployed, Conference North or South, Castel Di Sangro, etc) but always go back to my Spurs career when I quickly lose interest...

Inter. I'm a glutton for punishment.

on 2nd thought...I might have to play as Juventus. I enjoyed my demo-game with them as much as any of my other games and it might be a fun challenge to get them back up to Serie A. I used to play a ton in Italy (my longest career ever was a Roma career back on 01/02...which also had my 2nd longest Rosenborg career), might be nice to revisit that, as I don't think I played Italy at all in 06.

Either Watford(longest stint as manager in FM2006) or Coventry City(current team in FM2006) are the one's I'll look at first.

Ditto. I'll probably play with them or Arsenal first. (I enjoy playing with the big teams once in awhile) Then I'll slide into a more "serious" career with a lower tier team. I always pick them at random and as I know very little about those teams IRL, I learn a little something new each time.

I've started with Telford United in the past until they became AFC Telford and were no longer playable. I then chose Vauxhall Motors and got them to the Championship without any house rules. This iteration, I'll probably start with Stafford Rangers (I like the uniform and name) but will implement more strict house rules with respect to signing and scouting.

WSUCougar got me hooked on this game a month ago, and I've had fun with Peterhead of the Scottish Third Division. I'm a Rangers fan, so my goal is to either get the Blue Toon into the Premiere League with the Rangers or get the 'Gers to offer me a job. Neither has happened yet, but we'll see...

I never have tried starting unemployed before, that's an interesting thought. I like working up from the bottom as I stated earlier, but I rarely try and hit the top division with that team. I'll promote a division and start challenging in the next, but then I'll leapfrog onto another team and work my way up that way.
Sounds like most people play England. I tend to get tired of the work permit hassles once I'm high enough to justify sending a scout overseas. France and Germany are more enjoyable in that regard with just a limit on the number of non-EU players you can have.

What house rules do you use? I've not really seen any listed.....I limit myself to the current country and maybe neighboring countries for scouting while in a low league and do not sign anyone without a scouting report first but that's about it.

I use the Lower Leage Manager house rules and philosphy of role playing, you can find more info here:

That's cool Icy... my dad used to work for Newport County Council and they sponsored the team for a while or owned the ground or something, so when I was between age 5 and 8 I was a ballboy for Newport County a ton of times. They actually used to be a pretty decent English lower league team, but for some reason the fan support dropped off and they went bankrupt.
I too will be starting unemployed and seeing what crappy team in the UK will give me a shot (my best FM career so far was started as the manager of TNS in the Welsh league) As for other leagues, I will start with the major European ones (Germany, Italy, Spain, possibly Holland & France) and the US and see what I can add without slowing the game down too much.

That would be it. The rule I always broke was the number and quality of staff. It looks like FM '07 will take care of this "LLM loophole".
