KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has developed a severe case of laminitis, a potentially fatal disease brought on by uneven weight distribution in the limbs, and his veterinarian called his chances of survival "a long shot."
Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon who has been treating Barbaro since the colt suffered catastrophic injuries in the Preakness on May 20, said the Derby winner's chances of survival are poor.
"I'd be lying if I said anything other than poor," Richardson said Thursday at a news conference at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center. "As long as the horse is not suffering, we're going to continue to try (to save him).
"If we can keep him comfortable, we think it's worth the effort."
If not, Barbaro could be euthanized at any time. Richardson said if Barbaro does not respond quickly to treatment, "It could happen within 24 hours."
Richardson said the laminitis nearly has destroyed the colt's hoof on his uninjured left hind leg. Laminitis, a painful condition, developed in the past few days. The disease turned more serious in the past day.
"The left hind is basically as bad laminitis as you can have," Richardson said, adding that horses have recovered from laminitis. He said he has discussed the situation closely with owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson.
Richardson said Barbaro's injured right hind leg - the one that shattered at the start of the Preakness - is healing well, but because a horse has to be evenly balanced, laminitis set in on the other foot.
"We removed a large portion of his (left) foot wall, probably 20 percent of it," Richardson said. "He's in a foot cast with foam padding and antiseptic dressing. We'll see if can regrow his hoof. It will take months and months."
The grim update came after nearly six weeks of a smooth recovery. Barbaro had hours of surgery on May 21 to insert a titanium plate and 27 screws into three broken bones and the pastern joint, and has had two other operations in recent days.
"I really thought we were going to make it two weeks ago," Richardson said. "Today I'm not as confident."

this is very sad, considering how far he has come, and how hard it has been on the horse and the humans involved, to have made it this far only to now be set back to day one.

Considering that 99% of the time with injuries like this the tarp comes out and that's it, I can see that sentiment.
Everyone is all worked up over this one though.

I never realized this condition was possible with horses (or any other animal). I guess that explains why horses are often destroyed when they come up lame like this. How in the world of evolution is something like this still possible?

Shrug. It's their money.
Besides, AFAIK the horse doesn't go online and whine like a jealous bitch when some other animal gets medical attention, maybe Barbaro is just a better person than some people.

I hate trolling assholes.
The horse is a champion in a sport that has a rich history and I guarentee the animal is just as much a member of the owners family as anyone else is.
Not to mention their is a buisness side to keeping him alive as well. To argue the amount of money they are spending to keep him alive is idiotic. They will get that money back 100X if he lives.

Lathum, why the fuck would you call me an asshole? Really. That is fucked up. So not rock n roll.
please dude. there is a difference between trolling and stating an opinion. don't make this more than what it is.
Save the trolling accusations for guys who deserve it.

Let's look at it another way. When someone posts a thread about professional wrestling, and I show up and say I think wrestling is fake and homoerotic, that makes me a troll and an asshole. It's my opinion. I'm entitled to it. But I'm not adding anything productive to a discussion that wrestling fans are having.
Most people who have followed this story are horse racing fans. They care about the horses. You don't. I get that. It's your prerogative. But don't expect a warm welcome if you come into this discussion sharing your special point of view.

Umm, didn't you acknowledge that when you posted in the first place?

Yep, I believe you said it yourself.
On the other hand, I think you might have a point on the trolling aspect. Your opinion was on-topic, assholish opinion though it may have been. Motive would probably be the determining factor for whether it was trolling, and from your subsequent remarks I'd say it's more likely you were airing an opinion for it's own sake rather than posting to generate a predictably negative response and/or flame war.

My point is that a "horse lover" would have preferred to see him put down probably. The pain he is going through is terrible and utterly predictable. Greed prompted that, not horse love.
The lack of a critical view of the way they've tried to "save" him is curious.

The surgeon disagrees with you
"As long as the horse is not suffering, we're going to continue to try" to save him. "If we can keep him comfortable, we think it's worth the effort."
He then goes on to say that if that's no longer the case then the horse would be put down as quickly as within 24 hours.

Surely you jest.
It's taken his hoof falling off to get to the 24 hour window.

Evidently the way the police found out was that there were people videotaping their encounters. No word was released if he died happy or not.
