I dunno, it's early, I don't feel like working quite yet.
Does any team need help with long term training plans or where your team is headed or anything?

After 1 post, you already managed to turn it into one of "those" threads.. good job!
For highjacking my thread.. you now are required to help someone too!

You can help me with a question. I just had someone ask if he could buy one of my players for 60,000 euro. I'm not sure what he is asking since you can't sell directly to people. Anyone know what is up with that? Here is the guy:
Bryan Curry (12341292)
38 years, passable form, healthy
A sympathetic guy who is calm and upright.
Has passable experience and disastrous leadership abilities.
Speciality: Technical
Nationality: USA
Total Skill Index (TSI): 120
Wage: 500 US$/week
Owner: Thumpers
Warnings: 0
Injuries: Healthy
Stamina: excellent Goalkeeping: disastrous
Playmaking: passable Passing: disastrous
Winger: inadequate Defending: weak
Scoring: weak Set Pieces: solid

maybe his name is Bryan Currie and he'd like to have his own self in his team and he thinks that 60k is more than what this player should sell for, therefore he would be the only bidder crazy enough to pay for him at that amount...

05-23-2006, 09:32 AM
I think it is safe to say that 60k is more than this guy should sell for. I'm not sure that he should sell for anything.
Hobbes-
05-23-2006, 09:49 AM
I would say he wants the guy for his name? Maybe that's the guys real name? That player isn't really worth that much.. do it! but you didn't hear that from me. :)
Hobbes-

BrianD

Any worries from a cheating standpoint? 60k really doesn't mean that much to me, but I don't know what the rules are.
Hobbes-
05-23-2006, 10:05 AM
Now that you posted all of this? Maybe.. prior to posting this.. nope :)
I acually dunno the exact rules on this.. something about 100x the TSI value or something..*shrug*
BrianD
05-23-2006, 10:19 AM
No worries about the TSI, it would be less than 10x. If I am wrong, then I will be asking for help again....help deleting this thread. :)

how do i stop my ET middy from getting hurt every game? Ben gay? ace bandage? knee brace? fried chicken? free hookers?
oh... and how do i get my Utopian goalie outta weak form? For 6.5 million he should stay in at least passable all the time.

Im looking for a bit of help.
I have about 600k, my team is in Div 6 of the US. I make a profit consistently, have cut costs and am trying to Americanize my team(cheapen the work force). I am training PM. I have 2 trainees that are 19 and are excellent, the rest are solid. Knowing that I will NOT promote this year, when should i sell my trainees?
At some point the cost of salaries has to become counterproductive. I AM planning on selling these guys and training a new group(that i may or may not keep in the long run)

If you don't have the team to promote out of DVI, you are nowhere near close to having to worry about salaries. You don't have to worry about that until your players are around supernatural. Keep training those boys, and stop your Americanization.
FrogMan

I'd agree with MrBiggles here. Unless you are a freak like a tk we know and want to make your team an all american one just for the sake of it, or for the fun of it, foreigner wages are not really gonna kill you when you're at the level you're talking about. At least, they never killed me. I only went local when I started buying extra-terrestrial and over kind of players...

I'm always up for advice on what to do with the Raiders...especially since I'm leaning more to keeping them.
Brillig need not apply.
Maybe I'm not leaning that way anymore.
I think I just suffered my 3rd straight 1-0 loss.

Why not, I haven't posted in a while.... well I seem to be the only one left in my series training forwards (probably for good reason). Should I be looking to switch trainings or hold out for the long haul? Does anyone think the striker market will rebound to a more reasonable standing or am I holding on to a lost cause?
Hobbes-
05-30-2006, 01:11 PM
prices will continue to drop for ALL training most likely. Basically there are more users training than ever before and more players at higher levels.
I don't see the scoring market as being any worse than any of the other options. Perhaps secondaries will become more profitable to the point that more people start training them or at least training well rounded players instead.

I figure this is as good a place as any to ask my question. Do we still have a listing of all of the FOFC teams in Hattrick? I like to keep my challenges within the "family" so to speak so I was hoping there was an up to date listing of the FOFC teams. Thanks in advance.

I don't think anybody is updating the list anymore. If you are in the FOFC federation, you could take a look at the members. Let me know if you're not a member, I could pull the list and post it here for you...

I would like some help on forming a plan for my team. I am currently undefeated in V.78 and a virtual lock to auto promo.
I have $1.2 million in the bank now, and I will have another million in a week or 2 when I sell "FLORIAN KONRAD".
As you would likely guess from looking at my players, I train PM.
My top 3 are listed 1-2-3 below. Each of them is 2 weeks away from SOLID passing and 3 weeks away from the next PM level.
I am open to the possibility of changing training types at whatever point seems best.
Under a hypothetical scenario where I keep my starting middies intact for next season, how would you spend $2 million to upgrade this team?

that was funny, because with great regret I bypassed buying another passable/passable scrub today.
I am lucky enough to not need any defenders (my midfield is so dominant). that I am using my backline to "grow coaches", but I just don't have room to stick in another one...

Seriously, you are lucky enough to be in a fairly weak DV and in DIV you won't be able to own midfield like you do right now, so you'll need some defense. Don't BrianD your midfielders: sell them at titanic.

If I sold both 23 yr olds by season end at SN playmaking with Solid Passing I that would give me about 10 million (and a midfield that would not be competitive in IV - or so I think...) Let's say I sold 1 of the 23 yr olds, that would give me about 6 million to work with.
Where would you spend that 6 million?

SN PM with solid passing go for around 3.5-4 millionish. You could upgrade your keeper or your Outstanding striker next.

I have another 2.5 million in the bank, so I would have about 6 million to spend
Upgrade both the striker and keeper by a couple million?
Is it worth buying defender(s) at this point?

For future referance.... don't buy 3 middies that are the same age/skill level at the same time.(unless you plan on keeping them forever). When that happens you run into problems like this. You'll have 3 players that are to dam old to be training in PM but selling them will sap the only real strength of your team... your midfield.
If i were you i'd sell 2 of them at seasons end at least and maybe take 1 to titanic then sell him. Koos and Juan are at a good level for IV and will train up at a decent rate. Then you need to take all that money and upgrade your defense..... your offense is fine for now. Stop running that 2 OCD formation, that won't cut it in IV.
Now don't get me wrong.... playing the 2 OCD, all midfield/attack strategy can work and im actually a fan of it. But your not ready to pull it off above V. It takes massive amounts of midfield and a 2 killer attacks.
Don't switch training types... midifled training is were the money is at and your top priority should be money for a few more seasons, your team is to young to think about long cup runs or divison III. Just get that stuff out of your head. Invest in good young trainees with passable passing . Don't ever skimp on your trainee's, it will come back to haunt you.
After you've built up a strong overall team, then maybe you can think about training something else. But before you quit training PM, try to have 3 american middies with ET thru mythical playmaking and 2 of them with good passing. That is the best advance i give anyone. Its why i might be the first originial FOFC member to get to Divison II(along with Hobbes, through actual promotion, not the series sweep like last season,). And we've basically built our teams almost identicaly.
anyway, get ready to lose some next season but also stick with the plan. I got my ass hammered in IV my first 2 seasons and so did just about everyone else. Take your lumps, keep improving your team with big upgrades. None of this 1 to 2 skill level upgrades per postion crap. Try to go with 3 - 4 levels of skill. IE - Replace a formidable defender with a WC, etc.... and BUY YOUNG!!!! Don't invest in old guys that your just going to sell in a few seasons when you upgrade that postion. Think of these guys as rentals for a couple seasons. You gotta sell them in a few seasons so make sure you make as much as possible when you sell them.
Ok i've gone and rambled like i always do in these threads.... good luck with the team.

np bro.... anytime.
One day im gonna make a "Newbie to Divison II" guide. It will involve midfield training and passing training afterward.
I'll eventually get to the point in this game where im bored in II or the ML or III or wherever i end up down the road. I wanna win the cup or the ML champianship one day.... either one will do. And i wanna do it without cheating/exploiting aka daytrading/skill training etc... Then i'll probally do the 'sell my whole team' thing and start anew. I could honeslty build a freaking powerhouse of a squad with amazing ratings and low wages. It would take awhile, but i would have fun doing it!
If only i knew then, what i know now :)

Also becareful with what you buy. Don't get crazy wages from your defense. SI's team's defense is a good example of what you can do with a balanced coach. His wages for his goalie/defense is probally 80-90k(he's in III remember) and he regularly gets a Utopian/divine defense.
Just don't go overboard.... good goalie first, good defenders second,.... and becareful with wages.

So . . . I've finally decided to switch training from Scoring, which I have been training since, well day 1. However, the caveat to this is that it's going to take me 2 seasons to "ramp down" my training program because of how I built it. Additionally, one of my 4 goals in HT is to train a player to Divine. In two seasons, I will have my first ever Divine scorer in Darren Grogan, who recently popped magical. I can accomplish one of my other goals if I can get Grogan onto the Nats team, but I'm not sure that its going to happen.
However, here is my plan, I'd love to hear feedback:
Step 1: Cash out my forwards within 2 seasons. As a result of cashing out, I should be +$14M and still have 2 young titanic/ET scorers with awesome SP. I'll need to buy an additional Midfielder (wing towards middle) as I change formations to 3-5-2. Net total +$11M
Step 2: Begin training keepers. Dump my current keepers and pick up 2 trainees that are young and around outstanding/brilliant. Train both keepers to titanic/ET, sell one, keep the other. That should put me +$6M, my total net is now +$17M plus what I have earned in interest.
Step 3: Winger training for 2 seasons. Now, I've gotta spend some money as I'll be looking to put together some good trainees both on Offense and as Wing Backs. I'll probably try to buy $7M worth of trainees with good PM or good defense skills and decent passing. Still net +$10M. Build a couple of Mag-SN (PM)/Mag-SN (W) and a couple of Mag-SN (Def)/Out-Bril(W). Sell 4 players of slightly lower caliber that were my backup trainees, make more money. This would probably put me back up to some odd amount of money near $18-20M.
Step4: Dump my now elderly IM's and Strikers. Take that money, plus any money I have in the bank and buy all new young IM's and Strikers (I may be able to keep the strikers that I've got, but we'll see). Start training passing and make my run at everything. I'll have the cash. I'll have the players.
Sad that it would end up being so far away, however, I don't feel that the way my team is structured, I can get much past where I am in three. This plan, I think, gets me all the tools I need to compete a the ML level. I'd hope to promote to Div II, around the time that I complete my keeper training and be set to move forward from there.
Current team - (3-4-3)
Keeper: Outstanding (Ugh)
Defenders: Titanic, Brilliant, Outstanding
Winger: Titanic (W), Excellent (PM)
IM: Mythical, Titanic, Supernatural
Strikers: Magical/Solid, Extra-Terrestrial/Solid, Supernatural/Passable
Desired Team: (3-5-2)
Keeper: Titanic
Central D: Titanic (coach candidate)
Wing Backs: Magnificent (D)/Outstanding (W), Magnificent (D)/Outstanding(W)
Wingers: Magnificent(W)/Magnificent(PM), Magnificent(W)/Magnificent(PM)
IMs: Extra-Terrestrial/Passable, Extra-Terrestrial/Passable, Titanic/Passable
Strikers: Extra-Terrestrial/Passable, Titanic/Passable
I'm still working out the cost feasability on the final team. But I should have some extra bank left over from my savings to cover costs if I can't maintain salaries.

ok well, first off training a player to divine is basically throwing money away, unless your a keeper trainer. And he won't make it on the national team being just 'Divine'. Gonna need a heck of alot more training after divine to make it. But if thats your goal in HT then by all means do it.
You'd be better off switching to at least a balanced coach when you go to a 3-5-2 or your attack is gonna be weak in Divison III, even with 2 titanic/ET forwards. Defensive coaches are just way to brutal on your attacks.
Step 2: Begin training keepers. Dump my current keepers and pick up 2 trainees that are young and around outstanding/brilliant. Train both keepers to titanic/ET, sell one, keep the other. That should put me +$6M, my total net is now +$17M plus what I have earned in interest.
Why train keeprs at all? i say skip this part of your plan. All its gonna do is hold you back and your not gonna make much profit off it. If you have a balanced coach, take 5-6 million bucks and grab a mythical/magical USA goalie, your defense will rock! utopian/Divine across the back with decent defenders.
Winger training is nice in divison III and up. Good profit and you can still win plenty og cup games with back-up wingers. I wouldn't worry to much about Wingbacks, the profit is total crap. Do some research in the winger training fed message board.... you'll see. What you should do is maybe get a couple semi-young WC defenders with inad or passable wing as your starters. They will train slow as hell. As for your B-team wingbacks, just get some young cheap winger trainee's. Like 18 year old solids with decent secondaries... nothing to crazy. Play them in friendlies and easy cup games as offensive WB's then sell them in a few seasons. You'll make maybe 250k a season each, pretty crappy but its better then nothing. Your actual wingers is were you'll make your money at.

Your not getting out of III with those middies... and if you do your gonna get rocked in II. I'd get 3 american Mythical middies if i were you. Thats 220k or so a week but WELL worth it.
Also, mag wingers won't give you much of a wing attack. With an offensive coach, a divine central attack and my winger being WC with passable passing. Im only getting a ET/mythical wing attack in passable form. So with a balanced or defensive coach and a mag wing, your attack is gonna suck. Just warning you now.
anyway, thats what i'd do. Hope it helps some... gl with the team!

Havok,
Thanks for the feedback. I've been really throwing around what I want to do with Grogan. I really want to train him to Divine just to have the experience of training a player to divine. However, I realize that I am throwing money away. I may just dump him after my cup run along with Northall, who is mythical. That would give me enough money to upgrade my midfield to Mythicals (providing I sell what I've got) and purchase a new keeper. It's obvious that my keeper is in dire need of upgrading . . . I just hate paying those prices.
I was planning on going to a balanced coach when I promote my next coach up, so that is part of the plan. I've been so accostomed to being able to put up great attacks in the 3-4-3 that I might have underestimated what I need to have ready to go at the striker position.
The biggest problem that I see is that you can't be great everywhere. If you go with 3 mythical midfielders (not old goats, though), you'd have to make some good money to be able to afford the midfield. If you plan on grabbing 2 ET strikers & 1 Mythical/Magical keeper, you're up around 400k-500k in wages and you still have 5 players to put on the field. Granted, you can get away with cheaper defenders, but the wingers will still run a pretty penny.
My concern is: how do I remain profitable AND remain competitive? The first secret is obviously building the bank. If you don't have your 10M in the bank to earn the 100k interest/week off of, you're already behind the 8-ball. What I'm really trying to do is get the bank first. So many more options open up when you get bank. And I think that I've talked myself into selling Grogan off. I need the bank.

no..... you can't be great everywhere. But you can be pretty darn good everywhere. If you wanna make it to II your gonna need 400k - 500k wages. Unless of course your in a cakewalk divison III. Its no secret that midfield is still the most important thing in HT. Sure a great defense will win you some games and a great offense will win you some games. But if you play the percentage's, when you win possession by a decent amount and your attack is good, you win most of the time.
Thats why i say invest a nice chunk of money in your midfielders. Lets say you go with a balanced coach and train wingers.
Goalie - We'll say Mythical. A mythical american goalie will only cost you between 41-45k a week. Considering what he does for your ratings, thats the best bargin in HT.
Defenders - we'll say 3 WC defenders. Even forein born defenders are still cheap. around 13k a week. So we'll say 40k for 3 defenders. Now your defense costs you 85k a week and will get you Utopian/divine ratings across the back. Balanced coaches are nice when it comes to defense :)
Midfielders - 3 USA mythical's... im sticking to this one :) they will cost you roughly 80k a piece a week. Now that is alot, but you said you wanted to go to divison II and this will be key. With this midfield and smart TS managment, you'll win possession in a huge chunk of your games. That usually = a win. So we'll say 250k a week for your middies. Sounds scary but its not to bad.
Forwards - 1 ET/passable american and 1 titanic/passable american? Those 2 together will run you around 80k a week. With a balanced coach this will be a nice attack. but not great. Im thinking around ET? maybe Mythical but you will need some decent passing from your middies.
Wingers - You'll be training these but your gonna need pretty high winger skill to get a strong attack with a balanced coach. I personally would play with 1 WTM. Thats more midfield, but its up to you. Im planing on switching to winger training myself next season and my gonna go with 1 WC PM guy with passable winger and play him as a WTM. I'll make him into a uber winger down the road, maybe WC/WC when i sell him.
My other starter will be like brilliant or mag to start. That will be a bit weak for me but they train fast and i have an offensive coach. If you have a mag winger as a starter he'll only get you maybe a SN wing attack. That ain't much in divison III and it blows in II. So you might want to make sure you always have a good SN or higher winger as your starter. Set your trainee's up so when you sell your top offensive one, your back-up can step right in without missing a beat.
Anyway, back to wages. A WC pm'er as your WTM will cost you about 15k a week and an SN winger will also cost you about 15k a week. Thankfully winger salaries are cheap.Thats 30k for those two. Overall it looks to be around 450k a week in wages but your team will be VERY VERY divson II worthy. In fact you will be a strong diivson II team with that roster. Top half in every divison except maybe II.1. Might wanna add in another 20k or so for back-ups and trainee's.
Also, you don't need 10 million in the bank to be successful. Only 2 of the 8 ML teams have over 6 million in the bank. And only 7 of the 32 divison II teams have over 6 million. Its nice to have all that extra money, but certainly not necessary.
Oh and one more thing. Get a SP guy somewhere, probally best to get one on a defender. As high as you can, they will score you a ton of goals and set-up a bunch more off corners. Also get good secondaries... a couple heads guys, 2 quick wingers if possible. they freakin ROCK!!! Quick forwards are amazing to. I've just recently seen the light when it comes to good secondaries. They can do amazing things for a team.

Havok does make valid point although I'd go with a solid winger as the WTM winger (the WC winger one) unless he wants to train him well into his 25yo season to make him a WC/WC. That's assuming he buys a 17yo solid pm/solid winger that was trained in PM from the get go and until he's mid 21yo. Even though wingers do train fast, it will take you roughly 62 weeks of training to go from 21yo passable to world class, and at 14 weeks per season, that's still 4.4 seasons...

dola, and yes, you don't absolutely need to have 10M in the bank to be competitive. I stay at about 3M, sometimes a bit more, and while I'd really like to have more, I still can survive and compete quite well in canadian div II, which is maybe midway between USA III and USA II...

All that this has made me realize is how misspent my wages are. I wanted to validate some of the stuff that you said and I've come to agree with you on most of it. All though, I'd put the high side of the wages at 575k for the plan that you have. So you're looking at an average of 525k in wages, give or take backup salaries.
At $6M, you're getting roughly 50k/week in interest, which drops your needed profit to be 950k every two weeks (475 x 2). So, if you can sell out an 130k stadium every other week, you're golden (obviously this doesn't factor in cup runs). If you got your 10-11M in the bank and can get 100k interest/week, you only need to make 850k every two weeks to be able to cover costs. I basically count the sponsor money as negating all the rest of your costs. This would mean that you need to sell out 115k seats per home match to cover wages. If we call the magic number 100k stadium sell out, that means that your (wages - interest) can be no more than 375k per week. The obvious wild card hear is trainee sales.
So to cover 525k in salaries, you'd need to do the following:
1. Sell out a 100k stadium on a biweekly basis (425k/week avg)
2. Have 10M in the bank (100k/week avg)
3. Net 800k per season in trainee sales. (50k/week avg)
That is very doable. But I believe that it would break down this way:
1. Sell 90000 seats per home match (325k/week avg)
2. Have 6M in the bank (50k/week avg)
3. Net 2.4M/season in trainee sales (150k/week avg)
And that's how you cover to 525k in salaries.
If your training program can net more than 2.4M/season, you're in the black. Or if you can sell more tickets/get more interest, you're in the black. If you can't sell 90000 seats per home match, you need to make up the money elsewhere. Add in cup earnings and you should be good.
Now . . . to reallocate my salaries appropriately . . .
I'll post in a little bit with my revised plan. Good help, and good discussion, Havok.

no offense, but in what magic world would you sell out 100k every other week?!?!
My stadium is 90,999 seats and here are my home crowd for last season, a season in which I won the series title:
week 2: 45854
week 5: 45233
week 7: 50990
week 9: 69170
week 11: 90842
week 12: 57235
week 14: 80193
average crowd: 62788
One thing is known for sure, div II in Canada is not as strong as div II in USA but crowd numbers should be pretty similar...

6. Buy 19 y/o Outstanding scorer trainee - 1M (+4.5M)
7. Sell SN IM w/SP's - Hopefully get 3M (+7.5M)
8. Buy Myth/Sol IM - Hopefully for 4M (+3.5M)
This should put me at the end of this season. I'll be training scoring for 1 more season.
9. Dump Titanic IM w/SP's - Hopefully get 3M (+6.5M)
10. Buy Myth/Sol IM - Hopefully for 4M (+2.5M)
11. Train, Train, Train (+2.5M)
12. Keep ET/Pass, ET/Pass forwards (+2.5M)
13. Sell 3 20 y/o Mag Striker, 1 21 y/o WC striker 2M per (+10.5M)
14. Buy backup striker - Hopefully for 2M or less (+8.5M)
15. Sell Titanic/Exc Winger - Hopefully 3.5M (+12M)
16. Buy Winger trainees - 4M total (+8M)
17. Buy Mag/Myth Keeper - 6M (+2M)
18. Promote New Coach - 1M (+1M)
I hate how this leaves me at only +1M and a brand new training program. Something tells me I'm not done revising this. Biting the 6M bullet on the keeper is the hardest thing for me to do. Perhaps it is just better if I do it and get it over with. :) The benefit is that this knocks off 2 seasons from my other plan, so I can probably get the cash back up in two seasons, plus have a more competitive team.

no offense, but in what magic world would you sell out 100k every other week?!?!
My stadium is 90,999 seats and here are my home crowd for last season, a season in which I won the series title:
week 2: 45854
week 5: 45233
week 7: 50990
week 9: 69170
week 11: 90842
week 12: 57235
week 14: 80193
average crowd: 62788
One thing is known for sure, div II in Canada is not as strong as div II in USA but crowd numbers should be pretty similar...
FM
Yes that is a very magical world, in the sense that most people cap their stadium at 100k. It's still pretty far fetched. Plus, I'm hoping that the new formulas work out for the better, so if you're fielding a winning team in Div II, you can do 80-90k in a week depedent on the weather.
I agree that the number is quite outlandish, but I'm trying to get a real feel for what it takes to make money at the top levels. I'm going to go back and take a look at how some of the top teams in the top 2 divisions are drawing and see what I come up with.
So, if you're only averaging 62k fans per week, there's a lot of cash that you have to make up. By my guesstimates, average seats sell for about $7.25 US, based on my crowds, YMMV. I was just trying to get a ballpark estimate of what it would take. I doubt that I'll be able to get 90k per home match, so the difference needs to be made up in trainee sales, interest income and cup matches.
-------
Edit - I just noticed that Stiinta (#1 ML team) is having trouble getting 90k crowds, so please adjust down accordingly.

FM
yeah, i agree there. Making a WC/WC winger really isn't the best when it comes to pure profit for winger trainers. Good winger trainers make around 1 million a season per winger.
I won't be making the WC/WC guy for pure profit. He's one of those guys you bit the bullet on because he helps your team win. I fully expect him to cost me 3 millon or so and selling him in 4 - 4.5 seasons for maybe 6.5 if im lucky. Not the greatest profit in the world, but again... he's more there to help me win first.
Maybe a better idea is to get a Mag PM guy with solid winger who's maybe mid-20ish? He'd train faster, help almost as much with possession and in the long run make a bit more pure profit.
We'll see what happens in 16 weeks when i switch training :)
eitherway, good all around discussion :)

All that this has made me realize is how misspent my wages are. I wanted to validate some of the stuff that you said and I've come to agree with you on most of it. All though, I'd put the high side of the wages at 575k for the plan that you have. So you're looking at an average of 525k in wages, give or take backup salaries.
well i use this site for wages....
http://www.barthon.com/index.php?subject=salary_analysis&locale=en_US
Its been dead on for me in the past.
My team right now is a Utopian american goalie(75k), 2 Mythical american middies (1 is +5 or so) and 1 foreign ET middy (which i will be selling soon). They come to 243k.
2 wc defenders and 1 brilliant. They come to about 30k. 1 mag PM WTM and 1 WC winger which total 17k. And 1 ET/excellent american forward and 1 SN/excellent foreign forward. They total 74k.
Thats 439k for my starters and my total wages are like 461k including back-ups.
So if im off with my wages calculation from before, its only by alittle bit.

also remember sponsership money goes up about 60k from III to II. That alone helps quite a bit. And from II to I it goes up another 115k or so. Plus the higher up you go, the longer your in the cup which = more money. I've made about 150k each from my last 2 away cup games, but im still losing money right now. Not alot, like 100k - 150k every 2 weeks. Then again im banking on making it to divison II. So i don't recommend having 460k in wages in III unless you think you can get to II.

Yeah I'm at 420k and having trouble keeping afloat. However, as soon as I sell my Magical Scorer, my wages will drop back down to 330k.
That's a good link that you posted up there. It's very helpful. The ones that are hard to really gauge are the Wingers, because their value will shift considerably based on their PM skill.
I think that I should be fine surviving in 3 this season if I can get one more midfielder aboard. Right now, my series is pretty tough and I'll probably end up with a qualifier. We'll see how it goes.
I'm also a big fan of specialties. It's amazing how much they actually add to your team.

for what it's worth, my sponsors money was at 238k U$ in the latest weekly update. That's div II sponsors money.
As for the longer cup runs, beware, you will always play on the road, or almost always. And then at one point, you start meeting the league sandbaggers who go for long cup runs.
If that helps anyone, my current total wage is right at 500k U$ or so. Now out of the cup, I'm losing about 400k per two weeks... This could improve if I get better crowds in the second half of the season, since they usually go up for the second half and I'll have 4 home games in 7 games to end the season...

Wanted to answer the backup question and went on a ramble, so here goes the whole team :)
keeper:
-magical
-----------------
-formidable/excellent experience
wingbacks (half trainees):
-25yo supernatural def/excellent wing (62% to formidable)/solid experience
-24yo world class def/formidable wing (22% to formidable)/passable experience
-----------------
-20yo magnificent def/inadequate wing (just got him)
-24yo outstanding def/excellent wing (77% to formidable, will be sold when he pops)
central defender (two options):
-OCD: outstanding PM/excellent def/passable experience
-regular: one of the backup wingbacks
middies:
-canadian magical pm/no secondaries/passable experience
-canadian mythical pm/excellent passing/passable experience
-extra-terrestrial pm/no secondaries/formidable experience
-----------------
-brilliant pm (winger trainee)
-outstanding pm (winger trainee)
-outstanding pm (see OCD)
wingers (trainees):
-23yo magnificent winger (just popped)/brilliant pm
-21yo brilliant winger (just popped)/outstanding pm
-----------------
-18yo canadian brilliant winger (76% to magnificent, should pop this week)/no secondaries
-17yo american excellent winger (20% to formidable)/passable passing
strikers:
-extra-terrestrial scorer/passable passing/solid winger/formidable experience
-supernatural scorer/inadequate passing/solid experience
-----------------
-excellent scorer
A few comments:
This starting lineup gives me ratings of 290-300 week in, week out with PIC at home and normal on the road.
I don't really pay much attention to nationality of players in the sense that if I can get a foreigner for 1M less than a Canadian to save only 10k in wages per week, I will not hesitate to go foreign.
The high pm wingers give me the opportunity to play either with WTM or offensive wingers. I got an outstanding(high) midfield last Sunday on a normal away with both high pm wingers played offensive, as part of a 297 ratings.
That solid winger striker played toward wing, combined with the magnificent winger on offensive and the formidable wingback also played offensive all combined for a magnificent(very high) wing attack rating on that side in the same game. :)
The three older wingbacks came to the team many seasons ago, either as 19 or 20 yo with inadequate or passable winger. Lopez will never be sold, as he as solid leadership. I'll keep on playing him as a wingback until he's mayb 27 or 28 and he'll become my coach someday. I've played him offensively a bit lately with some nice results.
For my wingers, the 23yo will be trained until he's supernatural winger, or two more pops. That should take until week 9 of next season. The 21yo will also be trained until he is supernatural, which should put him to week 13 or next season. The 18yo, unless something real nice happens, is just outside of a U20 spot, because of his lack of secondary. He will also be trained until he's supernatural, or week 5 of next season. Same supernatural goal for the 17yo, which will take him until week 9 of season 31.
During cup runs, I've usually been sacrificing a wingback spot, giving double duty to one of the starters.
I had stopped tracking profit per week of training, but just restarted and my last two winger sales gave me 50k U$ per week of training for one brilliant winger/brilliant pm (bought at solid win) and one naked 18yo brilliant winger (bought at formidable). Note that the first one was bought when prices were higher and sold when prices are in the dump.
I won my div II series last season, even though it's "only" in Canada (before anybody else says it :p) and I'm currently in 3rd place, trying to surge through the ranks after a bad luck streak combined with my cup run.

It's not really a silly question. I've gone through the ranks, from div V in Canada to div II and you definitely train differently as you move up. In lower division, you can go with lower level trainees that will cost you way less and resell them something a bit quicker to get money to improve other areas of your team. To me, that was like buy at passable and selling back at formidable and maybe outstanding. That meant my average starter trainee was at best formidable and most of the time excellent.
Nowadays, I often buy trainee in the outstanding/brilliant range and sell them back at supernatural or so. It's not as cost efffective as I stand to lose quite a bit in the case of a market crash as we're living now. I mean, I bought a brilliant pm/solid winger for 4M (although some of it was because I wasn't paying as much attention to my team and the market as I've gone back to doing now, but still) and he's now brilliant pm/magnificent winger and I'd probably be able to 4.5M for him, bleh.
Anyway, hope this makes sense to you.

dola, and I'd say my explanation would apply even more to playmaking trainers since you'd need a better average skill of your trainees if you want to sustain and reasonable cup run every season, i.e. you can't go long in the cup with three excellent middies on your Wednesday night cup matches...

MrBigglesworth, read my answer there some training decisions that will be more profitable than others but might result in a lower average skill among your trainees.
Also, Havok's comment regarding the development of a WC/WC kind of winger summarizes quite well the difference between the two:
Havok does make valid point although I'd go with a solid winger as the WTM winger (the WC winger one) unless he wants to train him well into his 25yo season to make him a WC/WC. Maybe a better idea is to get a Mag PM guy with solid winger who's maybe mid-20ish? He'd train faster, help almost as much with possession and in the long run make a bit more pure profit.
What I put in red is not something I'd recommend a lower level team to do because while it might be good in the short term, it will impede the team's development in the long term. It's the kind of thing that higher level teams have to deal with on a regular basis...

FM has a point. There is a difference between training for money and training to compete. At the lower levels, it might look the same because the options aren't open to you. You have to make money to improve your team, it goes hand in hand.
However, as FM said, as you get into higher divisions, you can't afford to have the solid - formidable 17 & 18 y/o's on your team, while still making an attempt at a cup run. There is a lot of value in training from solid to brilliant, but you can't compete on the field doing that at a higher level. Plus, there are people who will take a season to train passing in order to increase their attack ratings. Training passing doesn't pay off at lower levels because you will need to sell that outstanding striker to get higher level strikers to compete. Passing training is throwing money away to make your team better. People don't pay high premiums for high passing. They'll pay a premium, but not enough to make part of a training-for-income strategy.
One focus that I think you need to have in the beginning is making enough money to buy/convert a solid coach, so you can return prophits quicker. I think the cycle heavily favors making money in the beginning. You need money and improvement shortly after, then when you get to Div III and up, you need to focus on making your team competitive at those levels, which may involve trying to maximize players production, while minimizing their salaries (i.e. passing training).
Havok

I pretty much agree with FM and Ravenhawk here. I'd stick with maximum profit until your ready to make a run at III. Then it starts becoming profit - vs - winning and how you balance both.

For you guys in the upper levels, what level of backups do you use compared to your starters in your non-training positions?
I think formidable is a good level for backups- older formidables with good experience can give you the quality of a bril or mag and can be had for much less than $1M each. I like to keep one for each position you aren't training (i.e. since I'm training strikers, I have a backup defender as well as a backup middie and a second backup middie who doubles as backup wing)
