View Full Version : Hot or Not, the Controversy

Alright, Antmeister and I were in disagreement after I voted NOT for Tyra Banks. I vote based on the person as a whole - looks, personality, sense of humor, etc. and he votes based on looks alone.

I find a lot of people sexy when others don't; and, there are some that are physically attractive, but might have a character *flaw* that'll turn me off.

So, what do you look for when voting?

Here is my take on the "controversy" from the Jessica Alba debate. Most of my posts were response to posts from your musically-talented better half.

I agree with you on Tyra. You made the right call.

H_B on Alba:

She has a great body, but her face... just doesn't do it for me. It looks a bit soft and pudgy and she always has this pouty, vapid look on it. She also has ZERO presence on screen. I am not saying that in order to be considered hot a actress needs to give Oscar worthy performances, but the hotness should radiate off the screen and any performance should, at least, be somewhat memorable for that. I've never seen that out of Jessica Alba. Every role she's had has been completely forgettable. She's a nice piece of eye candy, but nothing more. At all.

Thus, in the realm of celebrity hottness, she is "not".

I agree, in part, and dissent, in part. I agree with the part where you agreed with me, sir. I must dissent, however, on your second point.

I agree this poll isn't "Talented or Not". I made that clear in my initial post describing why Ms. Alba is "not". That said, for me, to find a celebrity hot she needs something more. Something... extra, to push her over the edge into hotness. It's not necessarily talent, per se, but more of a presence, an aura, a... sizzle, if you will.

Alba has a profound lack of anything like this. She's a void of presence and sizzle. It's shocking. For one who has some much, she has done so very, very little.

In sum, I do not think hotness for celebrities should be judged "strictly by looks".

We are judging on slightly different standards then. I agree, if I saw her walking down the street she would be "hot!". I would do a double-take. Perhaps even leer (in a comfortable, gentlemanly sort of way of course). I certainly wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers.

However, since it's "Celebrity Hot or Not", the standards are different. A nice body and a pretty face will carry you far, but they will not win the day.

I have been repeatedly let down by Ms. Alba. I keep expecting big things from her, but she has consistently disappointed me at every turn. Perhaps one day she will earn the grudging nod of "hotness" from me that she so very desperately wants. . .

Just a picture, that is all. That is what "hot" entails, no?

This isn't "Pretty with a Good Personality or Not", people.

For crying out loud, Anna K is crazy as they come, so why does she get a pass when others don't?

The total package, which is then broken down into something like:
"Would I ?"
If no, then Not Hot.
If yes, then:
"How enthusiastic am I about the prospect":
If mildly or less then Not Hot.
If very or more, then Hot

Note: all questions take place in a hypothetical vacuum that assumes I had both motive and opportunity.

Because, in the equation I described above, her smoking hottness overcomes her personality flaws to = HOT.

Not everybody can overcome their flaws.

Hot is more than just looks, an aura as well. If the person isn't "likeable" they have to be super super hot to get the hot vote. Likewise if they aren't what I consider to be a mainstream celebrity, and trust me thats a very very liberal interpretation, they automatically get a "Not" a celebrity vote.

Looks. Not like I'll ever be interacting with them.

But I'll be looking.....

Tyra Banks, on looks alone, is pretty close to perfect.
So hot.

As I said in another thread, looks provide an initial hotness value and then personality adjusts from there. Personality can cause a vote to cross the hot/not boundary, but it doesn't have to.

This shows how far out of touch that I am with the world. I find her bland blondeness not hot but her crazy personality is a turn on so I likes Anna despite not thinking her physically hot to me.

*SHURG*

I guess I have to have the personality component at least represented in the look ( even if it's just an acted fake personality ) to deem something hot. I don't get turned on by pretty corpses either...

but I did know a girl who worked in a morgue who admitted that she did. Kinda weird I know, but true. :)

I think its weird to take personality into account when we've never even met these people or know anything about them outside of the heavily edited, made for tv acts we're shown.

exactly.
personality and intangibles (like great ta-tas) can move a borderline hot person up the scale. likewise, if she comes across as a real bitch, she'll move down the scale.

oh, and Tyra Banks does nothing for me

A bad personality is like a bad boob-job. You don't get to see it very often, but you know the ugliness is there hiding. :)

I am much like Toddzilla. When someone uses the word HOT, they are most always referring to physical attributes:
"She has a hot body"
"She has some hot tatas"
"Her legs are smoking hot"

I never hear:
"She has a hot sense of humor"
"Her personality is hot"

If you are combing looks and personality, I think that is called sexiness and I disagreed with Honolulu Blue on this subject.

I guess the way I look at the Hot or Not threads is how I would react if I saw someone walking down the street without knowing anything about them. Because this is when usually a cluster of guys point out whether someone looks Hot or Not.

Strictly by looks alone.

But don't your views of that person generally change once you get to know her? Can you hate someone and still find her hot?

Try to keep it to looks as much as possible. And it is not an appreciation of beauty, it boils down to the down and dirty. Often entails certain physiological changes. Which is why it is amusing to have women voting in the polls, unless they would genuinely go for it if given the opportunity.

looks (and to a lesser degree flexibility).

It's impossible for me to separate looks from personality and other tangible or intangible assets and liabilities of a particular person. For instance, I often will see what appears to be a hot chick in a car next to me. And then she turns around and I see a cigarette in her hand. Not hot, no matter what she looks like.

To me, Celebrity hot or not, is different than "Regular" person hot or not. For regular people, personality is a big factor. Of course, looks are a factor as well, but personality has much more weight to the final equation. However, with celebrities, I know I'm unlikely to interact with them in person and I know that I'm only getting a glimpse into their personality from TV, etc. That is not a good judge of their personality. Therefore, personality is a much smaller component of the equation.

I'm not sure there is that much of a distinction there. If you know a lot about a person's personality, it has a major impact on their hotness. If you don't know that much about their personality - which you can't for most celebs - it can't have that much of an impact.

Pick the hottest person on one of these lists and then picture that person being as nutty as Tom Cruise has been lately. Would that change your hotness vote?

I think its weird to take personality into account when we've never even met these people or know anything about them outside of the heavily edited, made for tv acts we're shown.

That's why I made it clear I meant the appearance of personality not actual personality. I don't care if it's an act, it's the overall act that makes initial hotness. It's all about a fantasy and to sell the fantasy I have to see a fantasy personality.

[edited to add] Part of it is the way I process information. I don't process visual information well at all. I can see it but I can't store and recall it without difficulty. I have an extremely hard time differentiating car makes by sight for example and I'm the guy who sometimes doesn't recognize someone when they get a haircut. Words, however, I am close to photographic with recall.

So, I don't really have a reliance on the physical and when I'm relating it to things it tends to include the other intangibles like personality because they both are things I have a hell of a time recalling and process in the exact same way. I know this isn't really clear but I hope it makes sense.

Yes.

This thread is hilarious. Some guys are actually maintaining that absent legitimate restrictions (like being married/girlfriend), they wouldn't bang a hottie because she smokes or has a big forehead or bad personality. I don't believe it for a second. The ultimate definition: if she were naked and lying in your bed, begging you to come hither, would you cut off your arm to get some. If the answer is yes, then she's hot.

Well not personality per se, but annoyance of voice could make you say forget it... unless you could duct tape the woman's mouth. A hottie with Fran Drescher's voice would make me run in terror.

I don't think any of these hot chicks would bang a one-armed man, especially if he is bleeding all over the place. They'd probably pull the typical woman stunt of:

Hot Chick: "If you cut off your arm I'll let you nail me"
Dude: "Sweet!"
*Dude cuts off his own arm*
Dude: "Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! Ahhhhhhh!!!! Ok gimme some"
Hot Chick: "Tee-hee! I'm just kidding! But Justin Timberlake is so hot! Tee-hee!"

Yes.

This thread is hilarious. Some guys are actually maintaining that they aren't exactly like me. I am so self centered that I cannot fathom that there is any other way to think or act than what I would do. I am the ultimate judge of all human behavior and likes/dislikes so they must be lying.

Fixed it for yah.

PS: I consider myself of average looks and twice in my life I have turned down a woman far outside my "league". Once, because I truly found the woman scary odious.

The other, simply to say that I did. That was all. It was more fun than the experience would have been actually. :)

Like I said, not everyone values every experience equally.
