Am I right to be edgy about my number 1 WR having low route running skills? He is very good in everything else. For some reason I always viewed this as the most important skill for a no.1 WR. Logic being they would get plenty of balls thrown their way?

Yes, you are right about this. Route running has, pretty clearly, the greatest impact of any WR rating.
