Using the extremely scientific method of pulling names out of a hat, I have assigned everyone a country and we are ready to begin.

Turkey - CastleRock
Russia - TargetPractice6
France - Skydog
Germany - Warhammer
England - Celeval
Austria/Hungary - PackerFanatic
Italy - Tredwel

I will be sending out an e-mail to everyone shortly. Contact each other however you prefer. I will provide an e-mail address for each player, and of course we have PMs here.

Since pre-game planning, espicially over e-mail, can take some time, we're going to go ahead and take a week for the first turn. That should give everyone enough time to plan out initial alliances, and for the newbies to see what its all about.

FIRST ORDERS DUE MONDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 3pm EST

EDIT: The official site and game map are now up.

Spring 1901 Moves

HEADLINES
-- FRANCE AND GERMANY TUSSLE OVER BURGUNDY
-- ENGLISH CHANNEL REMAINS VACANT
-- BLACK SEA DOES NOT
-- BALKAN STATES PREPARE FOR MAJOR BATTLE
-- FRANCE MOVES ON IBERIAN PENINSULA, OCCUPIES SPAIN

We had one set of orders bounced in Spring of 1901. France and Germany tried to move armies into Burgundy from Paris and Munich, respectively. All other orders succeed. Of note, Russia occupies the Black Sea, while Russia, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and potentially Italy align themselves to fight over the four key Balkan supply centers. France and England appear to have maximized their ability to branch out by agreeing to leave the English Channel as a neutral zone, allowing France to take both Iberian supply centers easily, while England can fully pressure Scandanavia.

Great to see everyone get all their orders in!!

Alrighty. Austria seems awfully trusting of Italy. I'm not sure if that faith is warranted, especially with the way the Venice Army held. The temptation to stab might be too much, even this early in the game. Sorry if I am going to make those negotiations difficult between you guys. :) Taking Trieste away will deprive Austria of a second build (assuming they take Greece in the Fall). Of course, Army Budapest could make this bounce, but they might have visions of taking Rumania.

Turkey also must have Russia completely on their side, else they could be in a real pinch in short order. A Russian/Austrian alliance, that somehow managed to keep Italy in check, could put Turkey under quickly. Best hope for Turkey is for Italy to go after Austria and somehow keep Russia from taking a center from them next turn.

Speaking as an observer(which I will do as long as I don't become privy to alliance discussion whether by accident or on purpose, if that happens I'll keep my mouth shut)... I wonder about the Black Sea and if there is a Turkish/Russian alliance or if there was an agreement to DMZ the Black Sea and Russia went against it.

I also wonder what caused a bounce in Burgundy, whether that was dumb luck or if one of those two powers found out that the other had a trick up their sleeve.

England/France is always great to watch, who dives into the Enlgish Channel first :)

Our only bounce this turn is in Sweden, between Germany and Russia. The Balkans are efficiently gobbled up, leaving Sweden as the only unowned supply center in the game.

I can't wait to see how Spring 1902 plays out. Major alliances should become obvious everywhere on the map. The only truly interesting thing,I think, from the build phase, is where Russia chose to put its one new army. A sign of non-agression? Placement anywhere but Moscow would have likely showed what Russia's immediate plans are.

Spring 1902 Movement Complete

--GERMAN ARMY DISLODGED FROM RUHR THANKS TO FRANCO-ENGLISH ALLIANCE
--ENGLISH SUPPORT ALLOWS RUSSIA TO OVERTAKE SWEDEN
--RUSSIA MOVES TOWARDS WESTERN EUROPE, SUPPORTS TURKISH HOLDINGS IN BULGARIA
--ITALIANS THWARTED IN MOVE TO DOMINATE SOUTHEASTERN WATERWAYS
--AUTRIA INEXPLICABLY VACATES GREECE, MOVES NAVAL RESOURCES TO ALBANIA

There appears to be a major convergance towards Germany, and one must wonder if the Germans have any friends at all.

No changes occur this turn in the Balkan supply centers, though there may now be a huge opening in greece for someone.

Germany's only retreat option is into Kiel, though Germany is allowed to choose to disband the unit instead, which would allow a fleet to be built next year assuming Germany doesn't lose any supply centers. Germany has until 3pm Thursday to issue the retreat order(though I will process it as soon as I see it and get the updated map out.

Note to self, never take the center position when other people know others better than they know you...To some degree, my allegiances were up in the air. What tipped the scales in favor of the direction I've chosen was the decision to bounce Russia in Sweden, combined with England getting two builds in '01. An F/G against a 5-center England holds very little hope for advancing when germany has to deal with a fight with Russia. I'm usually more of a pragmatist than anything else.

Actually, that can work very well. England could have been stopped from getting 5 builds had you not suggested the Burgundy bump. I had been planning going to Ruhr, still should have done it in hindsight.

Germany could have survived a fight with Russia, I was pondering moving to the Baltic, and even had I not moved there, I was still in a position to fend off Russia. Germany was not in bad shape until everyone moved in. Russia is the big enemy of Germany and England. England could have VERY easily moved to St. Pete, and had they done so, Russia would have been declawed. England SHOULD have made the move anyway seeing the Turkey and Russia cooperation.

As I said before, I should have volunteered for one of the side powers, not a central power. Oh well.

--TURKEY CONTROLS SOUTHEASTERN SEAS, DRIVES ITALY OUT OF IONIAN
--GERMANY HOLDS BELGIUM, GAINS STRENGTH DURING THE WINTER
--FRANCE VACATES LIVERPOOL
--RUSSIA STRENGHTENS DEFENSES, FORCES AUSTRIAN ARMY OUT OF GALACIA

Game Map is updated: http://www.angband.org/~radii/dip/fofc/index.html

FALL Retreat orders due next.

Austrian Army in Galacia will retreat to Vienna(if they chose to disband their only build option would be... an army in Vienna, so there is no point offering this option).

Italy, however, has a decision to make:

Italy: Fleet Ionian Sea can retreat to Adriatic Sea or Albania or Apulia or Naples

Or that fleet may disband, allowing Italy to build something else in the Winter if they choose.

Italy has until Thursday to make this decision, though sooner would be nice :)

After Italy's decision is made and announced, France will have to remove one unit, while Germany gets a build, which must be in Berlin, and may be either an army or a fleet.

SPRING 1904 MOVEMENT

--AUSTRIAN RADIO FAILURE ALLOWS TURKEY TO TAKE OVER GREECE, AUSTRIAN ARMY ROUTED
--FRENCH ARMY RECLAIMS BELGIUM FROM GERMANS, GERMAN UNIT DISLODGED
--FRENCH AND ENGLISH NAVIES MAKE CONCERTED PUSH TO THE SOUTH

This one is a pretty exciting turn. Austria unfortunately sent in a couple of invalid support orders, causing most of his moves to simply be holds(the 'radio failure' mentioned above). A couple of supply centers change hands in Greece and Belgium, while there is some major re-positioning that appears to be taking place by Italy, France and England. In order to progress, a couple of countries have now found it necessary to leave their back doors wide open to allies, the ultimate sign of trust.

Game Map is updated: http://www.angband.org/~radii/dip/fofc/index.html

NOTE: The first game map I put up I screwed up Germany's orders(if anyone happened to see that early on). If you click on the wrong place on the map when inputting orders you end up issuing a support order instead of a move. I had to roll that back and fix it. The map should now be correct.

Fall 1905 Movement

--Turkey becomes full fledged power in the South and East in Europe
--English army in Liverpool spends months at sea, lands in Spain
--Austria crushed, surrender inevitable
--Germans see that the end is near

Turkey ends up with gains in Naples, Serbia, and Trieste in 1905. Italy takes a French homeland center in Marsailles, but loses its own foothold in Naples, and also loses Tunis. France gains Tunis and Holland to remain even. Russia gains Berlin. Austria and Germany will both start Spring 1906 with one unit.

Game map is updated here: http://www.angband.org/~radii/dip/fofc/f1905m-o.html

There is one retreat. Austria can retreat from Trieste to Tyrolia. But if they retreat, they will have to disband a unit, either the one in Tyrolia or Vienna, and they can choose to simply disband the unit now instead of retreating.

Upcoming Winter Builds

After the retreat:

Germany will have to remove one unit
Italy will have to remove one unit
Russia will earn 1 build
Turkey will earn 3 builds

England/France stay the same.

Retreats are due Monday 3pm but will be processed as soon as received. Builds will be due Tuesday 3pm but again, processed as soon as received following the retreat.

Holy crap!

-- Austria, Germany officially surrender
-- England makes landfall... everywhere. France to make last stand in Marsailles
-- Turkey takes Tunis, loses Trieste and Serbia
-- Russia takes over entire former Austrian Empire, threatens Turkey in Armenia

France is down to 1 supply center. Italy 2. This is essentially a 3 man contest now. On that last turn England took 4 French supply centers. While I'm sure they could have taken some in the spring and some in the fall, that was pretty impressive.
