TUCKER TIGERS: THE COLLEGE YEARS

Following The NCAA Exploits of Former Tucker Tigers

Yup, all the "dat (other^x) boy run so good" threads are starting to get cluttered, and there's no end in sight to Tucker's stream of talent to various college programs across the land. Particularly with the 2003 (http://showthread.php?t=13256) signees now being past the red-shirt season, I figured it is time to start this, and create a place to talk about former Tigers that we see on Saturdays (and on Sundays, too). I'll resist the urge to begin this thread with guys from years prior to the first Dynasty, but I might throw in a tidbit or two about guys like Andrew Childers (Samford), Tim Goodwell (Memphis), Terrell Jordan (Northwestern), Gene Pate (Clemson), Patrick Pass (New England Patriots) and Darrius Swain (UGA). However, we'll start with the guys who some of you followed while they were in high school...

THS CLASS OF '04

2003 Season Record: 12-2, lost in overtime in the state semifinals to Statesboro

THE SIGNEES

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/REAJON-ALEXANDER1.JPG

WR/OF Reajon Alexander--Lane College/Georgia Perimeter College--"Ray Ray" started at receiver and was the backup QB on the team that year. He is very small (probably 5'8", 160 pounds as a HS Senior), and decided to transfer to Georgia Perimeter College and play baseball. He's an outfielder there now.

http://uga.rivals.com/IMAGES/Player/photo/050406-088.JPG

RB Thomas Brown--University of Georgia--An old man in the stands at a Tucker game once said that "dat boy run so good, it make your DICK hard!" He entered preseason as a true freshman at #4 or #5 on the depth chart, and had to sit out several early practices with a hamstring injury. However, he was the starter by midseason. He led the Dawgs in rushing as a true freshman in '04 with 172 carries for 875 yards and 8 TD's. He was named UGA's Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He's #1 on UGA's depth chart this year at RB. In summer conditioning, Thomas became the first UGA player in the Richt era to score greater than 7.0 in his strength index--a measure of weight room results compared to body weight. He benched 425, squatted 550, and power cleaned 321 this summer.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/JIMMY-COLEMAN1.JPG

OLB Jimmy Coleman--Tulane University--Jimmy played LB and FB for the Tigers, and was a Region hurdling champion. He would have played TB at most other high schools in Georgia, but Tucker has ridiculous speed. He's a legit sub-4.5 kid, recruited as an athlete, and Tulane has him playing WLB. He was given the red shirt tag last year. This season, Jimmy is listed as a "top backup" at the position by collegefootballnews.com. He'll be wearing #34 for the Greenwave. - Jimmy Coleman, RFr. - What the the 6-0, 205-pound redshirt freshman lacks in size he makes up for in speed clocking in 4.4 40s. He'll quickly become a disruptive force on the weakside behind Brandon Spincer.

Jonathan Jenkins--University of the South--He sat out a good bit of his Senior year with an injury. I haven't seen JJ since graduation, and can't find anything on their web site about him. Might be tough to follow. ;) He's a lineman, and probably would be on the offensive side of the ball.

S Brandon Johnson--Lane College--B.J. was a WR/DB at Tucker, and was slated to play DB in college. He worked for a good friend of mine this summer, but I didn't get any football reports, beyond the fact that he red-shirted last year. Lane lists nothing on their web site but the football schedule--no roster or anything--so I'm going to be hard-pressed to follow him...

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/BRANDONLANGHARGRAVE1A150.JPG

DE Brandon Lang--University of Georgia/Hargrave/Troy--Brandon was a speed rusher from DE, and TE for Tucker. He turned in an incredibly gutsy performance in the loss to Statesboro, racking up three sacks and several catches despite being so sick with the flu that he probably belonged on an IV. Brandon didn't quite qualify as a freshman, so he went to Hargrave Military Academy, where he started and starred at TE. He intended to go to UGA, but could not get admitted as a partial qualifier, so he ended up heading over to Troy. He is not listed on the 2005 Depth Chart, which I find a little difficult to believe.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/MCDOWELL-DT150.JPG

QB/OF D.T. McDowell--Troy State University/California Angels organization--D.T. starred at QB and SP for the Tigers. He's got a cannon for a right arm. "Million dollar arm and a ten-cent head." He worked his way up to starting QB for Troy as a true freshman last year, but is academically ineligible for this season, and will focus on baseball. He was drafted in the 20th round by the Angels last year, and batted .310 with an OPS of .862 in rookie ball.

ILB Andrew McKain--Air Force Academy--"Captain Insano," as he was known in high school, led Tucker in tackles in '03, excelled in the classroom, and earned a football scholly to the Academy. He started on the freshman team last year, but is not listed on the depth chart for the '05 season.

T Clay Muirhead--The Citadel--Clay played on both sides of the line of scrimmage, and is an offensive lineman for the Citadel. He'll wear #74. He redshirted last year, and is expected to see action this season. Here's the blurb on him: 2005 ... Enters the fall as a reserve offensive lineman ... posted a good spring and the coaches look for him to push his way into the starting lineup ... outstanding size and footwork, but must continue to improve on fundamentals of blocking in order to be a contributor on the offensive line.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/STEVENROCHE150.JPG

DT Steven Roche--Lane College--Started on O-Line/D-Line. Talked with him this spring. He red-shirted, and expects to play this year.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/JAMES-SWINTON1.JPG

WR James Swinton--Auburn University--Swinton only started playing football as a Junior at Tucker, and by his Senior year, this former member of the Marching Tigers was a *SERIOUS* deep threat, the fastest man on the team. He red-shirted last year at Auburn, but had a strong spring, and I've seen his name quite a few times this preseason, too. I know that he caught a 71-yard TD in a recent scrimmage. This kid can fly. I'm guessing he's a sub-4.4. Swinton as listed as the 3rd split end on the depth chart.

THS CLASS OF '05

2004 RECORD: 12-1, Region 6-AAAA champs. Lost in state quarterfinals to Statesboro 15-14.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/TREYBUICE05150.JPG

CB Trey Buice--Ball State--suffered the nightmare in the Dome in '03 of fumbling two punts in the loss to Statesboro. Rebounded with a very strong Senior season. Trey is probably under 175 pounds, and will most certainly red shirt this year.

K Brad Daniel--Maryville College--Strong-legged kicker who put a healthy number of kickoffs into the end zone. Needs to work on his accuracy. There are only two placekickers listed on Maryville's roster--both freshmen, so I reckon he'll be given a shot to play.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/TAVARESKEARNY05150.JPG

OLB Tavares Kearney--UGA--Earned the nickname "TKO" by knocking five QB's out of the game as a Senior. It was looking like he was going to get playing time this year (wearing #56), but a rumor is going around today at the UGA site that he hurt his knee. Tavares had some knee problems as a Senior, so this is believable. Hopefully the next post in this thread won't be bad news.

RB/WR Hamilton Sims--Newberry College--This little-bitty 5'5" guy played MG and FB at Tucker, but was recruited to be a RB/slot receiver. Great speed and unbelievable athletic ability. Made it to the state finals in the high jump. I can't find much info at their web site, but they offer 'net broadcasts of games, so I'll probably be listening.

OL Will Stewart--Presbyterian College--Will was the center at Tucker, and will remain there at PC. I talked to his mama yesterday. It looks like he's the #2 long-snapper this year, and either #3 or 4 on the depth chart at center. He'll redshirt unless he's needed to long snap.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/IMAGES/PROSPECT/PHOTO/BRANDYNYOUNG150_2.JPG

CB Brandyn "B.Y." Young--USC--B.Y. took over at tailback midway through his Junior year when Thomas Brown went down with a broken leg. He started at RB/CB as a Senior before signing with Spurrier's boys. He'll play DB for the Evil Genius. He's suffered an injury setback during fall camp, and I suspect that he'll red shirt this season.

Hopefully the next post in this thread won't be bad news.No ligament tear, and he practiced today, but is still having some minor issues. Sounds like the same issues he dealt with while in high school.

Posted today on a USC site...

Freshman Brandyn Young has been moved from cornerback to running back, Spurrier said. “We’ll give him a look over there, but he’s way behind those other players right now,” he said. “We’ll see what he can do.”

From the AJC...

Kearney might require knee surgery

Published on: 08/16/05 Freshman linebacker Tavares Kearney has cartilage damage in his knee that could require surgery and time away from the field, Georgia coach Mark Richt said.

The extent of the injury is not yet known, but the concern is over the amount of "frayed" cartilage in Kearney's knee. An MRI has already been performed, and treatment options are being considered.

<!--endtext--><!--endclickprintinclude--><!--startclickprintinclude--><!--begintext--> "If it's a little bit, it is not that big a deal," Richt said. "If it's a lot, then you might have to clean it up."

Richt said the injury could be similar to the knee injury suffered by D.J. Shockley in the 2003 season. Shockley, who had cartilage damage and underwent surgery, missed the last eight games of the season with the injury.

Kearney could redshirt this year if needed. He has already been suspended for the first game of the season.

Kearney's loss has left the already thin linebacker corps downright emaciated.

Dannell Ellerbe was out of practice with a stinger Monday. Jarvis Jackson has not been cleared for full contact because of offseason shoulder surgery. Tony Taylor has battled through hamstring problems. Danny Verdun Wheeler is on crutches because fo an ankle sprain. Jamario Smith has been slowed by cramps.

They need to start sending players to VT.For whatever reason, VT is one of very few strong football-playing schools east of the Mississippi that I've never seen recruiting at Tucker, nor ever heard of a Tucker player even considering.

Mrs. A. went to the University of the South. Beautiful campus. It's like a medieval castle plopped down in the middle of a 10,000 acre mountain forest. Tiny as heck, though. 1,300 students total and NOTHING else around. Never thought that I would ever hear it mentioned in the same breath as football.

It is looking like Tavares is going to have surgery to clean the knee out, and will therefore redshirt. Sad, as it was looking like he was going to get significant playing time this year.

Two updates on players at UGA...

1. Darrius Swain has lost at least 40 pounds from his highest weight last year. He's at 330 or less right now. That's a *very* good sign. This kid has NFL first-round talent, but he's never focused. If that changes, he'll be fun to watch.

2. Thomas Brown is working as a first-team kickoff returner right now. Also, a little bird told me that Richt is actually going to toss the sweep some this year. If that is true, then it is a very strong indicator that he's tailoring the offense to Thomas's talents.

Got to catch up with three guys mentioned in this thread on Saturday. Tucker played at the Georgia Dome, and TKO, Thomas and Brandon were all on the sidelines.

http://www.younglifenorthlake.com/fofc/tuckerboys001.jpg

(L to R: Tavares Kearney, Brandon Lang, Thomas Brown and UGA S Kelin Johnson {not a Tucker grad})

Tavares--He did have the knee surgery last week, and will miss the season. As speculated, it was nothing new, just the same knee that bothered him at Tucker flaring up.

Brandon--He played TE at Hargrave, and will stay there at Troy. He said he's now around 6'6", 245. (He's *definitely* gotten taller since I last saw him in the spring, even.) Because of the way the transfer was done, he is ineligible this year, but will play in '06.

Thomas--Says UGA will run a good bit of 2-tailback sets this year. He also said to expect to see him in the slot some. It also looks like he'll be returning kickoffs for the Dawgs.

I got conflicting impressions as to whether or not D.T. McDowell will continue to play football after his eligibility is restored.

WEEK ONE RESULTS

THOMAS BROWN--Boise St. stacked the box with 9 men for most of the game. As a result, D.J Shockley had a monster game, and the UGA "3-headed monster" only had 19 carries. Thomas led the three RB's with 8 carries for 42 yards on the day. To hear a post-game interveiw with Thomas, click here. (http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/ajc/audio/sportsplus/0905/UGAThomasBrow_0903.ram)

I can't find any numbers put up by former Tigers yesterday. I was hoping to see Swinton get in against Tech, but if he did, it was after I fell asleep early in the game. :p

Upperclassmen also mentioned who are playing are Tim Goodwell (http://gotigersgo.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/goodwell_tim00.html), starting MLB at Memphis, and Terrell Jordan (http://nusports.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jordan_terrell00.html), who was set to be starting RB at Northwestern, but is injured. Memphis plays on Monday this weekend.

One more bit of news: Spurrier has moved B.Y. to tailback. He'll probably red-shirt this year. With Asher Allen's commitment this week to UGA, and it being likely that he'll play next year, Tucker will have at least three former tailbacks playing in the SEC next season.

Go figure. According to the box score at the Ball State web site, Trey had 4 tackles against Iowa. He is listed at 165 pounds, by the way. :p

Tim Goodwell appears to have had a nice game in Memphis's loss to Ole Miss. He had 11 tackles, 2 for losses, and a sack.

WEEK TWO REPORT

THOMAS BROWN--His 20 carries for 144 yards and a TD played in big part in a 17-15 win over USC. After two games, he's averaging 6.6 yards per carry. He suffered a slight shoulder separation, but was listed as "Probable" for Monday practice as of last night.

TIM GOODWELL--Memphis did not play this week.

JAMES SWINTON--Swinton played in his first collegiate game as Auburn beat Mississippi St. He had no catches.

VINCE HILL--This member of the '02 Tucker Tigers had an interception and a fumble return for a TD against Florida State. Vince sat out most of last year with a knee injury.

TREY BUICE--He had one tackle and one assist in a 40-31 loss to Bowling Green.

BRANDYN YOUNG--I looked for #3 on the USC sideline, but the cameras over there only showed Coach Superior, never the players. I didn't see him on the field, and I'm not 100% certain he dressed.

THOMAS BROWN--Slight shoulder separation. Did not play against Louisiana Monroe.

TIM GOODWELL--Tim had seven tackles and an INT in a blowout of Chattanooga.

JAMES SWINTON--Swinton played in second collegiate game. He made 1 catch for 11 yards in a 63-3 blowout of Ball St.

VINCE HILL--The Citadel did not play this week. They've got App. State next week.

TREY BUICE--He had three tackles and one pass broken up against Auburn.

BRANDYN YOUNG--His grandfather was at a Tucker practice this week. He said that B.Y. will most likely be red-shirted unless he's needed due to multiple injuries. We'll wait to next year to update on B.Y.

Freshman LB Kearney leaves team

Athens — Freshman linebacker Tavares Kearney has left Georgia's football team, coach Mark Richt said today.

"I just think he wanted to get a fresh start," Richt said. "Sometimes you get somewhere and you realize maybe it is not the best place for you."

Kearney, a highly touted linebacker from Tucker High School, had a troubled stay at Georgia.

He and an instructor were involved in an altercation for which he received a one-game suspension. The instructor had accused Kearney of using a cell phone camera to cheat on his nutrition exam. Dawn Penn filed a battery charge against Kearney but it was dropped.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Kearney was projected to be a reserve linebacker for what has become a thin group of players. But before the season could begin, Kearney suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that required season-ending surgery.

Richt said from his view the parting was amicable. He also added that with Kearney being from Atlanta, sometimes there is a desire to go further away from home to college.

The coaching staff will assist Kearney in his transfer.

Wanda Smith, Kearney's mother, and Kearney could not be reached for comment.

Ugh. I've let this thread slip. I'll do an update some time soon.

As far as Tavares, I'd rather reserve comment, and leave it at the statement his mama released:

"Tavares had over 200 offers to attend college. I think we — family and friends — kind of chose his destination for him. My co-workers, close friends, extended family chose UGA because it was close to home. I don't feel as if he ever had a fair chance. With the incident that happened over the summer, the Academic Dishonesty Charge — that was cleared — was a bit much for Tavares. After that took place, the personal and extended family came together again to support Tavares and asked him to stay and give it another try. He agreed.

"Soon after, Tavares was injured in practice. He had to knee surgery, which was another setback for him. As a mother, Tavares would call to discuss his stay at Georgia. He actually shared that he wasn't too happy, but he decided to stay. He did not feel as if he was given a fair chance. As a mother, I heard my child's silent cry. He wanted to stay to make things work, and he did for a while. He had surgery and a day later he had to begin rehab. He survived even through the pain. I was informed by the coaches and the weight training staff of his progress on a daily basis. Soon, he was off crutches. Things were getting better. I did not hear from him as much.

"I received several calls from Coach Richt with updates on Tavares. Due to his injury and extensive recuperation, he met challenges traveling back and forth. Tavares felt he wanted to build a name for himself. Challenges were met because of who his mother is. He said he wanted to be his own man, not the son of a famous mother. He decided Georgia was not the place for him. He did not want to be labeled as Wanda Smith's son, Frank Ski's nephew or 'Little V-103,' anymore. He wanted to be his own man. He did not want to be in that environment anymore. He wanted to more forward.

"[I] spoke with [Georgia athletics director] Damon Evans on several occasions and he has agreed Tavares has just had it rough from day one, and just did not have a fair chance. He wishes Tavares well in whatever he does and he would be supportive of whatever Tavares decides.

"I have received hundreds of letters of support from our listeners. I would like to thank all of our V-103 listeners."

Poor job on this thread last year, mainly due to not much interesting to report besides TB's season, which any and everyone could follow. Much more interesting this year, I think, considering I now live in Charleston and should be checking out former Tigers Clay Muirhead, Vince Hill and Corinthius Dunbar in person as they play for The Citadel. Clay was over to the house last week, actually. I also hope to get up to Greenville, NC to see Dwayne Harris. Hamilton Sims and Will Stewart aren't far away either, up in the Greenville, SC general vicinity at Newberry and Presbyterian. Plus, Ol' Tim Goodwell is a Green Bay Packer as of right now. He's looking to make the squad as an undrafted free agent.

Swinton was the leading receiver in the Auburn scrimmage yesterday.

Brother, Landon, plays football at Texas-El Paso

Interesting...I was about to ask if Landon played at Tucker as well, but his hometown is listed as West Covina, CA.

Looks like Landon has more size than his brother as well, 6'2" 240lbs.

The Packers cut Tim yesterday.
No redshirt for Asher at UGA. He played a good bit on defense and special teams. He returned 2 punts for 28 yards, and had one kickoff return for 35 yards. He had 3 solo tackles, one assiste, and one tackle for a loss.
TB didn't get the best blockign for most of yesterday. He got hit in the backfield on his first carry right as he touched the ball for a 3-yard loss, and that pretty much summed up his day running the ball. He had 10 carries for 29 yards and a TD, 3 catches for 20 yards, and ran back one kickoff for 32 yards.
Swinton played against Washington St., but got no catches.
TKO transferred to Georgia Southern, and will be sitting this year out.
Brandon Lang is #2 on the DE depth chart at Troy. He had three tackles in a blowout win against Alabama State yesterday.
Andrew McKain and Robert Kraay open the season next weekend with Air Force Academy at Tennessee. Andrew is playing ILB and wearing #49. Robert is at OT, #72.
Clay Muirhead is starting for The Citadel. They opened at A&M with a 35-3 loss last night.
Hamilton Sims, red-shirted last year, got 5 carries for 26 yards for Newberry College in their 30-0 win over Edward Waters. (Reminder: this kid played middle guard in high school.)

I heard from Trey Buice (Ball State) a few minutes ago. He is hurt, and will miss a couple of games, probably. He was set to start at corner for them before his injury.

For those who haven't heard, Thomas tore his ACL on Saturday and is out for the season.

Linebacker set for NFL Europe
Posted: Jan. 9, 2007

The Green Bay Packers re-signed linebacker Tim Goodwell to a reserves contract this week and plan to send him to NFL Europe.

Goodwell was in training camp with the Packers last summer, but was released on the cutdown to 53. He was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 26 and released again on Nov. 2.

Others put on the Packers' reserve/NFL Europe training camp roster are: wide receiver Carlton Brewster, cornerback Alvin Nnabuife and tackle Adam Stenavich.

Also, the practice squad contract signed by end Dave Tollefson expired Monday. Tollefson, a seventh-round pick in 2006, injured his back while on the practice squad and was on a reserve list. It's unclear whether the Packers intend to re-sign him if his back injury clears up.

A few notes to start off 2007...

Tim Goodwell played in NFL Europe. He's considered a long shot to make the Packers' 53-man roster this year.
Thomas (Sr.) has made a near-miracle recovery from his torn ACL. In an interview yesterday, Richt finally confirmed the worst-kept secret in Athens this fall: that Thomas showed *zero* signs of the injury throughout camp and preseason practice, and is once again set as the starting tailback to start the year. :D :D :D :D
Andrew McKain (Jr.) is now hanging at Chez Lewis just like the old days. ;) He transferred to Charleston Southern. He'll have to sit out this year, but has two more years of eligibility. It's been great to visit with him and his family a good bit since he got here in June. Having seen them practice, assuming he keeps working, Andrew should dominate at this level.
Clay Muirhead (Jr.) is starting at guard for the Citadel. He was over here with Andrew a couple of weeks ago. He's HUGE.
Brandon Lang (So.) didn't make the cut grade-wise to get into UGA, but he is now playing for Troy. As a freshman last year, he had 4.5 sacks. He's set to start this year.
James Swinton (Jr.) is now considered by many to be the fastest guy at Auburn. He could be WR3 this year.
Asher (So.) is battling for a starting spot in the UGA secondary. Right now, it looks like he'll be the nickel back and divide time with Thomas and Knowshown Moreno on kickoff returns. We could well be seeing two Tucker boys back to return kicks for the Dawgs at times this year. :D
Trey Buice (Jr.) started the last 8 games for Ball State last year, and is set as starting corner again this year.
Our high-school-NT-converted-to-college-RB Hamilton Sims (So.) played in all 11 games last year for Newberry. HE averaged 4.5ypc, and even completed a halfback pass.
Brad Daniel (Jr.) was 10 for 15 on FGs for Maryville College, including 2 for 3 from 40-49 yards.
East Carolina moved Dwayne Harris (Fr.) to WR. He got the red shirt last year, and probably won't see a lot of playing time this year.
Myke Compton (Fr.) also got the red shirt last year. He'll

The first time TB touched the football, less than 10 months after his injury, he took it for a 12-yard TD. TV announcers and even UGA fans expressed utter shock at how good he looked yesterday.
Swinton had a key catch for Auburn, one catch for 16 yards for the day.
Myke got to see his first action for La. Tech yesterday. He made a solo tackle on special teams, and assisted on another.
Asher had four tackles and a sack against Oklahoma State.
Dwayne got to play some *QB* for ECU yesterday. No passes, but four carries for 16 yards against VT.
And yeah, Tim got cut. :(

Dogs RB Brown on fast track
Early graduation's the goal for speedy tailback

Athens — Thomas Brown does everything fast.

There has been the Georgia running back's much-publicized 10-month turnaround from an ACL injury. He's mercurial on the field. He talks a mile a minute. And just as a topper, he also decided to get his degree in three and a half years.

<!--endtext--><!--endclickprintinclude--><!--startclickprintinclude--><!--begintext--> "I had an opportunity to have a free education. I just felt like it was very important for myself and my family to get my degree," Brown said.

That was one of the reasons Brown pushed himself so much in rehab. He wanted to be back, play his senior year, have his degree in hand in December so then he could turn all his attention to getting ready for the NFL Draft.

Now he is pushing himself in the classroom with 21 hours. That's seven classes: five in his major speech communication, a philosophy class and an African literature class.
It's a stark contrast to what some players who redshirt are able to do in their final fall. Former quarterback D.J. Shockley only had to deal with six hours in his final semester. Former Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart just took a dance class in his final semester.

Brown doesn't even have time to dance.

"I don't have any time to do anything else but go to class, go to practice and go to sleep," Brown said. "I don't really have any time to watch too much TV or play video games like I used to. Every night there are more reading assignments due, homework coming up, papers coming up."

Brown was saddled with this class load because during the spring he was unable to get into all the classes he wanted. So he sat there with free time and only 13 hours. This semester the classes were available and with his senior status he was able to get every class he needed to graduate.
