Saw the Indiana Jones trilogy. The first and third movies were good, but the Temple of Doom wasn't very good. Some pretty stupid parts, and the whole story wasn't exciting.

The Number 23 - 1/10
i am not exaggerating when i say this is the worst movie i think i've ever watched. nothing in it made sense, not one motivation was believable...actually, forget motivation. not one thing in the entire movie was believable, come to think of it.
how long does it take to read a book?
why, when a character is snooping through an abandoned building, are there candles set up and burning?
i could ask a million more questions...but i dont want to get into spoilers. fuck it, im using the spoiler button for the first time ever
-he takes his son to a cemetary to dig up a body?
-his wife steals a skeleton?
-he meets his wife 23 seconds after getting out of mental hospital
-didnt she ever realize he couldnt remember anything before meeting her? ever? did they ever talk?
-why does the shrink slit his own throat? (ok, thats a big, big question. you cant just have a character kill himself for absolutely no reason...and this seemed to have absolutely ZERO effect on anyone in the movie)
-why go looking through an abandoned psychiatric hospital at night?
-he'd only been out of the hospital 12 years. what the fuck happened to it? did a hurricane hit just that building and everyone let it rot? even if they shut it down the next day after he left and never touched it again it wouldnt look like that
-he forgets his wife's maiden name is pink? he only has 12 years of his entire life to remember up to that point. are you kidding me?
-on that topic, using pink as a device to get to 23 was the worst one. they did some crazy math to get it to 92, then divided by the number of letters in the word. thats a stretch
-how did his family find him in a random hotel...in a random hotel room?
-making any leap in logic from a random occurrence of a number to murder is a little tough to take
-i'd write more but its 1 am. im just mad i watched this thing at this point, but im sure i could add 23 more horrible things that made no sense to this list
the best part is all the bad actors get to play 2 characters in the movie, so twice the horribleness!
i give it a 1 because i made it all the way through, everything was in focus, and i could not stop laughing at the ridiculousness
if anyone liked this movie, i can safely say we will never agree on anything. ever. im looking at you, CR!
I don't know. That's a pretty "strong" rating. Not sure I can completely "anti" that one. :)
I'll give it a shot, though.

And the guy still lives? WTF? What about the kid beating up three or four thugs with one swing of some bar. And falling a few hundred, if not thousand, feet using a raft and surviving!! The movie had quite a few stupid things like that for me. That woman was annoying too.

I can buy that whip thing though. The other two movies I was fine with the stuff going on. Temple of Doom bugged me for whatever reason. Also, compared to the Ark and the Holy Grail, those stones in Temple didn't have the same impact on me. Could be a religious thing, I don't know.

I can suspend my disbelief a bit, but Temple of Doom just had too much. That kid was annoying too. So two of the three characters you see all the time were annoying.

Iron Man - 9/10
Iron Man opened today here in the Philippines (Apr 30). Great movie. Downey Jr. had the role down pat. The CG was awesome. The dialogue was not as corny as you'd expect. It was great all around. The only thing I would hold against this movie was that the final fight scene was a bit underwhelming... but other than that, I went in with high expectations, and left the theater with those expectations met.

MikeVic, we've gone through this several times here in the past (wait till Schmidty reads this again). Raiders is in my top 5 all-time (plus best cinematic experience ever). I put Temple of Doom in my bottom 5 of the worst movies I have ever seen. Saw it opening weekend, and again when it came out in the trilogy DVD just to see if I would not hate it as much...nope...probably hated it even more. So there.

I saw this a few weeks ago and have to agree with you, but I think I would go 3/10. Pretty horrible movie, way too over the top, in not a funny way either.

Reign Over Me - 6.5/10
I give a good majority of the movies I watch a sub 5 rating. So giving this one a 6.5 means it's not as bad as most of the crap that comes out now, but it's still not going to change the way I view the world. Adam Sandler does a decent job playing a guy with severe PTSD, but he still lets his Billy Madison character come through...as he does in every role. Don Cheadle co-stars in what I feel is his most believable role yet, as a dentist who has lady troubles all around. I would watch it again if it were on tv, but I wouldn't spend money to buy it on DVD. On a side note, Liv Tyler has a relatively small role, but doesn't play the innocent sweet bright eyed lady love of the main character for a change. I actually liked her character the most by the end of the movie.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - 6/10
It wasn't Dodgeball funny, but it was enjoyable. The scenes with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly were pretty funny as was Will Ferrell with the French driver. Some of the stuff seemed, a little forced, like where he runs around in underwear.
The Faculty - 6.5/10
Students suspect their teachers are from another planet and have to work together to defeat them. I was surprised to see so many big name actors. It wasn't edge of your seat scary, but it was a little tense at times.

28 Weeks Later - 7/10
28 weeks after the virus was "taken care of", british citizens start populating the island to start over.
One thing I didn't enjoy was that background sound was so much more intense than the dialog. I get pretty scared when watching scary movies and I kept turning the volume down out of fear an infected human came out of nowhere to start chomping up on the disease-free. It did what it was supposed to, I was on edge the majority of the time, but the gore was a little much for me.

I don't know anything about comic books so this rating is strictly on storyline, etc. The visual effects were amazing and the storyline was great. I didn't have an issue with the fight scene, it wasn't drawn out or short, but just right. I'm glad I came in here because we would have left the theatre without watching the scene after the credits, so thanks.

Brewster's Millions - 6.5/10
Pryor (Brewster) is set to inherit $300-million, but like the old "i caught you smoking a cigarette, now you have to finish the whole pack" - he must spend $30-million in 30 days. The catch is he cant have any net worth at the end of the 30 days, so he cant spend it on art or anything like that which would have value.
It has all the normal early 80's production values, which are sort of charming here. Pryor moves at an absolutely FRANTIC speed the entire movie, once the challenge is laid down. I mean frantic. It is easily one of his best acting roles. And with John Candy as the lovable best friend...this movie was very entertaining.
I know it's a remake from the 30's or 40's, but I think it could easily be re-made again.

Excellent, exactly what I was expecting. The Dracula song at the bar had me absolutely dying. Once I got over the Meg Griffin trip my brain was having, Mila Kunis was mmmmmm.
Sweeney Todd - 6.5/10
I felt Johnny Depp was great as usual, and was really the main reason I wanted to see it. The blood/gore was over the top to the point of humorous. With that said, probably not a movie I'd watch again.
There Will be Blood - 7.5/10

Saw it twice actually (Friday and Saturday) with two different groups of people. Enjoyed the story, loved Downey Jr's funny lines and those robot arms, and he was bad ass as Ironman. I also liked the couple of hints at future developments.
I thought there were a couple of silly moments that you had to strain to believe, but they were in the first half. I would have also liked to see more crazy weapon action from Ironman, but it was still fine the way it was. This is up there with me for best superhero movies, along with Batman Begins, X-Men 1 and 2, Spiderman 1, Hellboy... and I'm probably missing a couple others.

On the surface, it's about two older men that have only a year max to live, and decide to do a bunch of things together before they die. Of course there's more to it, and I really enjoyed the development of the two main characters and their relationship. I thought the last twenty minutes or-so were touching, and got a little choked up. A very nicely done movie, and both of the main actors (Freeman and Nicholson) did a good job.

I enjoyed this movie too, but there was a lot of suspension of disbelief necessary. I'd give it a 7.5/10, personally.
I would certainly recommend watching it, though.

Iron Man - 6/10: Underwhelming. Maybe I just bought into all the hype. It was a good movie, but I didn't think it elevated itself. Downey, Jr. and Paltrow were great, but I think there may have just been too much exposition. I think I was getting bored with him trying to become Iron Man rather than being Iron Man.

The Bucket List - 9/10
On the surface, it's about two older men that have only a year max to live, and decide to do a bunch of things together before they die. Of course there's more to it, and I really enjoyed the development of the two main characters and their relationship. I thought the last twenty minutes or-so were touching, and got a little choked up. A very nicely done movie, and both of the main actors (Freeman and Nicholson) did a good job.
When I saw this movie in theaters, I went in fearing that it might end up being preachy. I was surprised at how profound the entire movie was. The third act of the movie was very touching, and I did cry a bit. :D

Redbelt (8/10)-- Honestly, it could be higher. I personally feel it is a 9 in quality for what I like to see. But I have knocked it down a tab, because I know my type of movie doesn't necessarily mesh with the ideas of the common moviegoer, and there will also be those who see it as a martial arts movie (and they will probably be disappointed if that's all they're looking to see).
Okay, enough qualifications. Just a very interesting movie, and anyone into martial arts (themselves, not movies about them) or anyone trained particularly in juijitsu will likely be intrigued by it. But it was a good deal more profound of a movie than I expected, and isn't about some competition of fighting, but a man standing on his principles in the face of losing everything. The lead actor (forget his name, it is very hard to say or even think, lol) does a terrific job, but there were strong performances throughout.
Just, please, don't go see it on this recommendation and come back saying "I didn't like it because there isn't fighting all the time like other martial arts movies". :)

Been waiting a year to watch this movie. Worth the wait. I loved everything about it. Ryan Gosling (who i'm not a fan of) was very good, but the girl who played Drey stole the show. She was fantastic.
It's about a grade 8 history teacher/basketball coach, who has a pretty bad drug problem. Drey finds him getting high at school, and the movie takes off.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - 7/10: I liked the book better than Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but as a movie it doesn't work as well. The wonder of wandering around in the beginning of the book and seeing the differences in Narnia is a joy to read, but kind of drags in the movie. I understand they had to do it that way, but it made the middle feel kind of too long. Overall, it ends up being a good flick with pretty good matching the book (somewhat), great battle sequences, and perfect CGI, but don't drink anything beforehand, cause its looooong.

Keeping Mum - 7.5/10
Genre: Dark Comedy
The Goodfellow family has it's problems, a father too devoted to his faith and has no interest in sex; a bored, neglected wife; a nympho daughter; and a bullied son. Along comes housekeeper Grace Hawkins and everything changes.
Ant described it as a dark Mary Poppins and I agree. There were a lot of uncomfortable moments and a lot of "omg what's gonna happen now". Good, steady mediocre pace from beginning to end... Maggie Smith (aka Ms. McGonnagall from Harry Potter) does an excellent job playing the housekeeper.

I echo the battle scenes were awesome and the CGI was just the right amount. I never read the books so I can't speak to the differences. There were a few things that were seemingly Lord of the Rings rip offs but all in all very enjoyable.
One thing I will caution, there was ALOT more carnage in this one then the first, nothing graphic, but I wouldn't recommend bringing kids under 9 to it. There were alot of really young kids there ( including a baby  ) and my wife spotted a few of them crying.

As great as everyone says it is, and every ounce of credit goes to Robert Downey Jr. He was just beyond fantastic - he goes from power-drunk to vulnerable to scheming to self-doubt and you believe every single second of it. He has a great character to work with, too, thanks to the writers and Favreau, so that helps.
My only mis-giving was the big fight scene at the end of the movie was way too fast and way too dark for me to keep up with, so the special effects were lost on me at times.
Mrs. Zilla and I took our daughter to MyGym for parents night out so we could see the movie, and in 2 weeks, were going back to see it again.

Oh yeah... the baby in our theater would every once in a while decide he couldn't sit still and quiet... so that was fun (at a 9:45 show!!! The movie ended after midnight and you are bringing toddlers and babies?!).
I'll echo the carnage. I mean Prince Caspian is a more violent book (it is about a constant war), but they don't flinch from any of the violence in it.

American Psycho (2000) - Christian Bale is Patrick Bateman. Bateman and his coworkers are grade-A douchebags and you figure that out about 5 minutes in. But Bateman, despite this, has a way with the ladies mostly because he's a well off young man. Oh, and in his spare time, he likes to split skulls of prostitutes and colleagues he is jealous of (he's got a severe inferiority complex working). I don't know how to grade it exactly, except that I loved that before his murdering he'd give a brief review of artists from the 80's. Classic. Also, the GTA-esque finale was quite funny. Didn't understand the very last scene, going to the IMDb boards to figure it out. All in all, it was an entertaining flick with no real substance... 6.5/10

Good novel, and I'd say the movie actually does an excellent job of representing the novel. Worth reading to complement for sure though and it's a quick read. I think it really fleshes out Sheriff Bell's character a lot more(Tommy Lee Jones).
I also don't have a problem with the ending though. That's McCarthy through and through, his endings are very open-ended. I think it went with the theme, we've got 2/3rds a movie that is a pretty prototypical thriller and then a 1/3rd that is much more introspective.
I'd say it's one of McCarthy's weaker books but still very good by almost all other authors standards, and had the best chance of being translated to film worth a crap which it was.
I'm curious to see how The Road comes out onto film, that one could be pretty haunting if done right. Blood Meridian is being made now by Ridley Scott, and I see no way for that not to bastardize the book.

I don't mind open-ended endings. If done right, I'll love the ending. I guess I just didn't like how they executed the ending in the movie. Even if it's the same exact ending as in the book, sometimes endings that work really well in written form don't translate well to the visual form and vice versa.

Tideland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410764/) - 6/10
Genre: Indy/Fantasy
Before the movie started, the director had a disclaimer that 1 of 3 things was gonna happen: You were either gonna love it, hate it, or end up with a "what the hell just happened" feeling. I'm in that category. The movie was beautifully shot with great cinematography and nice use of colors. It had a story for the first 20 minutes or so, after that, there wasn't much of anything. The movie as a whole was disturbing and uncomfortable, but the "kissy kissy boyfriend" parts were going a bit overboard.

Not a bad flick. Much better, in my opinion, than the movie adaption of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I think they ended up changing the story a little bit (at least in terms of flow), but I don't think it hurt the movie in the least. Actually, given that I think that the first movie was too true to the book, it was probably a good thing. This surprises me (the Middle Eastern impression). I wasn't sure I had a seen a more dead-on impersonation of a late middle ages Spanish kingdom. American Gangster - 7/10: A very well done crime drama with Crowe and Washington very good as the leads. It is based on a true story, so it is fascinating that that's how the drugs were smuggled in (in a fiction story, it would have seemed a bit fanciful!). Though it ran a little bit too long, the story was interesting and the actors were top notch.

Bridge to Terabithia - 8/10: A very well done children's movie. I never read the book so the twist close to the end REALLY struck me and touched me. The beginning seems like a pretty good children's movie about the power of imagination and learning to open your mind. But the twist really elevates the film (as you can tell, it's hard to write a review without discussing the twist).

Jessica Biel was absolutely horrible in this and brought down the entire movie. It's like, you've got Norton and Giamatti, two of the best actors you can find, and then she can barely deliver a single convincing line. Also, the final twist was telegraphed at the beginning of the 3rd act.

i still maintain that the twist ruined an otherwise good movie
the best trick in the whole movie is that the 2 kids are the same age in the beginning, then they grow up to be a 40 year old norton and a 22 year old biel.

I don't remember the details of the twist in this movie, but I remember it was sufficiently telegraphed that everybody I watched it with figured it out at the same early point.
Whenever there are two movies on a single subject matter that come out very close to each other, one generally seems like a cheap rip-off of the other. To me, the Illusionist seemed like a cheap rip-off of The Prestige.

Not really a rip-off....they came out within weeks of each other if I'm not mistaken. Both were books first. The Prestige went through a pretty big change from the book to the screen though if I'm not mistaken.

Devil's Rejects - 6/10
I'm not sure exactly what I thought this would be but it was better than what I had expected. Still, glad I didn't waste time in the theater to see it. Rob Zombie's wife is smoking hot but a horrible actress. Terry from Three's company gets a little naked and looks good for somebody in her 50s. :)
Cinematography was decent, though nothing new or innovative. I never really felt the tension that I think Rob wanted to project (hand held shaky camera, odd camera angles) and I don't think the protagonist (Sheriff John Quincy Wydell), if he can be called that, was justified in what he ended up doing, so that part wasn't satisfying in the least.
I really wanted to not like this movie at all, but wound up watching it all the way to the end; something I can't say for every movie I've rented.
Rob's wife needs to stay out of his movies (unless she is a stripper or something).

I realize that it isn't a rip-off, but it feels that way. Even if they both had decent source material, it just feels like Studio B gets wind of Studio A making a movie on a subject so B rushes out their own version of a movie on that subject. I'm trying to remember if there was ever a situation like this where both movies turned out to be really good.

So thanks to our next door neighbor watching the kids, the wife and I are going out by ourselves for like the second time in a year. And the wife wants to go see a movie. She usually sees movies on nights out with our neighbor, but I've basically stopped watching movies except the occasional stupid comedy. We haven't seen a non-kids movie together at a theater since...best as I can recall, it was probably Me, Myself, and Irene (which I don't remember much of, except it wasn't all that great).
We've narrowed it down to Indiana Jones, the latest Narnia, and I threw out that Sarah Marshall movie (which is at the dollar movies now) as a consideration as well. Which one is going to be the most entertaining? I haven't read a single review of any of them, so I don't know how they stack up to general expectations. I always default to comedies, but keep in mind I'll probably have to choose between the other two since they are the wife's choices, so I guess my questions are: (a) which one of those two is better; and (b) is Sarah Marshall good (assuming I could convince her to see it, is it worth it)?
Thanks.

Turns out she wanted to go.
So we ditched the movie and headed to the game. One of our neighborhood friends who is a Lexington cop sees us when we get there and asks whether we've got tickets yet. We say no, he takes us over to the box office and gets us 6th row seats behind home plate, for free. It was like 70-75 degrees tonight, slight breeze, beautiful night for a game.

Planet Earth - 9.5/10
To get the full experience, I recommend watching the Blue-Ray version. 4 discs of gorgeous detail, they are:
Disc 1 - "From Pole to Pole", "Mountains", and "Freshwater"
Disc 2 - "Caves," "Deserts", and "Ice Worlds."
Disc 3 - "Great Plains," "Jungles", and "Shallow Seas."
Disc 4 - "Seasonal Forests" and "Ocean Deep."
Stunning, absolutely stunning angles, colors and did I mention detail? From the beautiful glistening snow, to the rough texture of sand, to the mighty powerful waterfalls.
Although they're all pretty incredible, my favorites were Caves and Forests as I have never heard of some of the creatures/living things living in these places. There was a salamander that lives at the bottom of a cave with no eyes and no pigment in its skin because it never saw the sun. It takes several generations for something like that to happen. With Jungles, I was fascinated with the bacteria that lives there and how it impacts everything around it.
Oh man, and the time lapse photography.... wow. Seasons changing, flowers growing, just awe-some. My words don't do this justice, do yourself a favor and watch it.

There Will Be Blood (7/10) -- First off, you're going to need to be in the right frame of mind to watch this. DDL is of course engaging as hell but the movie as a whole wasn't the dazzling movie I expected. I have to sit back and think a little more about the symbolism of everything and how I took it all in. I have two or three major thoughts running through my head which I'm sure is why so many people like it. To me, it was an oil-based Citizen Kane.

Something was totally off with Jessica Alba, her fake blue eyes and terrible blond wig made her look very unattractive. Her acting wasn't the best either.

Murder Set Pieces-1/10
I love a good horror flick, and the box for this movie has a lot of claims like "The most graphic horror film ever committed to celluloid"
A big part of what makes a horror movie great is tension. This movie has none. Zip. Zilch. There is not plot. It reminded me of "The Number 23" in that the same shit kept happening over and over and over and over again. Mind numbing, pointless, devoid of any scares. Avoid at all costs.

Once - probably the best movie I've seen yet this year. Low budget Irish indie film about an Irish musician and a Czech girl he meets. It's a borderline musical in the respect that a lot of screen time is dedicated to them composing/performing songs, but for me it worked incredibly well. Maybe a bit of a music-heavy version of Before Sunrise.
I guess 4 of 5 stars at least. Really enjoyed it a great deal.
Just saw this. Great non-Hollywoody movie with some wonderful songs in it. Loved how the guy and girl worked together with their singing.

The Aviator - 8/10: This was a 2 hour, 50 minute (or so) length movie that just FLEW by (no pun intended). The acting was top notch. Leo was just mesmerizing to watch and Blanchett was perfect as Hepburn. Even Beckinsale played Gardner well. A lot of name actors in more minor parts as well - the casting was excellent. And the story was facinating. I never really knew much about Hughes' life, so I was really drawn into it. Worthy of all the accolades.

Surf's Up - 7.5/10
A penguin (Cody) lives in Antarctica and dreams of making it big as a surfer. This is shot in a documentary-style, following the adventures of Cody and the people surrounding him. They don't really explain why Cody is having a documentary made of him, but it doesn't matter. I have to say that some of the animation looks really nice. There's some funny/cute stuff in it, but I didn't find anything really outstanding. It's a nice, entertaining kids movie with a pretty simple story.

The Incredible Hulk - 8/10
I am fairly impressed by Marvel Studios right now. They have hit two movies out of the ballpark with Ironman and the retcon of Hulk. I guess it will take a very big miss of a movie for me not to watch anything they put out in the near future.
Norton was excellent as Bruce Banner. The CG was pretty good, and the fight scenes (specially the final fight scene with Hulk vs. Abomination) was very well done and was paced really well.
They have now laid the groundwork for Captain America and The Avengers Film by releasing two good movies in Ironman and The Incredible Hulk. If you're interested in watching The Avengers Film two/three years from now, this is definitely a must-see.
Love the fact that Downey Jr. shows up as Tony Stark at the end of the film, ala Samuel Jackson's Nick Fury at the end of Ironman. "You do know that we're building a team, right?" Can't wait for Thor and Captain America now.

As one that has next to zero interest in superhero movies (the last one I saw was probably Superman 3), I think I would be interested in seeing Iron Man.
you haven't seen iron man?

Clerks II (7/10) -- I got some good laugs out of this and I felt there was actually a message/method to Smith's madness. I still would like to see someone take a chance on him to make a "real" movie. A high drama or something to that effect, just to see what he can really do.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - 7.0
Take a naked Marisa Tomei, the acting of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and even a little Ethan Hawke for the ladies, then throw in a jewelry heist and you have a great premise. Tomei spends the first half of the movie topless and the rest looking mighty sultry (where has she been anyways?). Although it's a stretch to believe she was Hoffman's wife.
Unfortunately I went in expecting a thriller and this one plays out more like a Greek tragedy. Dragged heavily in the middle, and the time phasing, while keeping it interesting, became annoying after a while. Still the acting was great ... and did I mention Marisa?

I saw the Incredible Hulk last night. I'm not sure where I stand on it exactly. It was not a bad movie, but definitely not great either. I'd probably rate it a 7.5 or so.
I definitely think it was a step below Iron Man, but above most Marvel offerings. I actually found the action sequences to be the worst part. I think it's very hard to do Hulk convincingly now, and I thought the action was pretty boring in this one.
A couple of amusing cameos though, and I enjoyed seeing Rickson Gracie in it.
The non-comic fans I saw it with loved Iron Man and were very meh on this one, so I think I might be even more generous with the score because I'm a Hulk fan.

Yeah, good call. Tomei was stunning (looks a lot younger than 43!), but the rest of the movie... yeah. I'd had people hype it up before I went to see it so I was expecting something a little more than a spiralling out of control Greek Tragedy, and a pretty average one at best.

Bobby - 7/10
Pretty good flick taking place in the hotel on the day leading up to when RFK was shot. Kind of sucked to find out afterwards when looking stuff up about it that most the characters were fictional and just based on real people in some cases.

Actually, I'm in the same boat. I think Hulk was paced better, and the final action scenes between Hulk and Abomination were much, much, much more fulfilling than the final battle between Stark and Stain.

If you're going for the naked Tomei, then book it. She gets fucked doggystyle in the very first scene, which isn't even the end of her nudity.

The Happening - 8/10
Got shat on by critics so thoroughly that it made me dub it "The Crappening" before I had even seen it. I loved Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. I liked the Village. I hated Lady In The Water. It has been a downward slope of quality in regards to M. Night in my mind, and coupled with the horrid reviews, I was not expecting much. Still, he's the only living director that has ever made more than one movie that made me scared. Thus, I gave it a chance, as I do with all of his films.
It's good. I don't know exactly what constitutes gore. I guess it's made out to be blood and guts. This movie only has a few moments of that. It does have, on the other hand, many disturbing images that contain no bloodshed. I watch horror movies day and night (sadly), and this had moments of suspense and horror that don't come often for me. Wahlberg and Deschanel and average actors at best. I don't feel as though the performances were as terrible as some made them out to seem. Wahlberg's delivery at the beginning seems a bit...forced, but by the end of the movie it seems in character. Deschanel's eyes are huge in her first scene, and they take a little getting used to, but she holds her own. They don't do great acting jobs, or even good acting jobs. They did not ruin the movie for me.
As far as the science and realism of the film go.....I don't give a fuck about it. I came to watch a movie, not attend biology class.

With all due respect:
The Happening -- 1.5/10
I enjoy M Night movies; like Karl, 6th Sense / Unbreakable / Signs top the list.
This thing was a travesty. It was terribly written. The script and dialogue were so abyssmal, that the actors had no chance. There was a grand total of two moments of signature M Night suspense.
There is so much unintentional comedy in this, that it almost seems a parody of itself. The "wtf" moments are too many to count, and I couldn't have cared less if everybody in the movie were killed off. And so many of the deaths were just preposterous.
Never has 90 minutes seemed so agonizingly long.
The only reason I give it a "1.5" is because of the many laughs I got at moments that were not supposed to be funny and because it was fascinating to see how breathtakingly bad it was.

I started watching "There Will Be Blood" last night, I'm right at 2 hours into it and I'm wondering how much longer it's going to go on...I can see why DDL got the Oscar, but man - if it wasn't for all the buzz around this movie, I would have given up and turned it off about an hour into it. I figure at this point, I'll finish it out though...
Also have "No Country for Old Men", looking forward to that one as I've heard such great things about it...

I see all the underlying things pulling at DDL, his kid, the fake brother, he shows compassion one minute then is totally cut-throat the next, his complete greed...it just hasn't grabbed me like I expected it to. I admit DDL is brilliant in it, but the rest of it is just ok.

I can see that. I mean the hyper competitiveness, leading to violence, seems to be something that is more pushed for males in the workforce (to make a vast social gender stereotype). The whole forget everyone else, stomp on your enemies thing seems to be something that males can relate to more than women, as, IMO, women in our society aren't shoved in a similar direction.
FWIW, I thought it was one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen in my life. I think it got robbed of the Oscar, and I really liked "No Country".

Also look at it from a Biblical context and look at it from the Bible stories associated with the character's names.

Oliegirl i kinda found the same thing with "There Will Be Blood". DDL was great but as an overall movie it was just okay. Not a bad movie but not really what i was expecting after all of the great reviews. Then again i kinda thought the same thing about No Country for Old Men too.

Eli, the Church guy is definitely the most entertaining character in the movie...but any scene that DDL is in, he just steals. I'll finish it tonight, but it's not something I see myself watching again.

I actually really liked the ending. The final line, delivered after his final act of, I guess vengance would be the right word, was great. He'd managed to alienate or eliminate all of those in his life who saw him as something more than an oil tycoon. I thought it was perfect in it's simplicity for such a complex character.

The Prestige - 7.5/10
I can't help but compare this to The Illusionist. What made The Illusionist a little better for me was Norton and Giamatti's (sp?) acting.. I dunno, they seemed more believable, more passionate. What I enjoyed about The Prestige was the crazed obsession Bale and Jackman had to one up each other, to a point that it becomes deadly.

Totally agreed. It was the final act in the grand drama of his isolating and alienating himself from everyone else. His entire life was all about him and what was best for him. It was the only possible ending to his hypercompetitive nature.
And IMO, absolutely brilliant. It elevates the film for me into one of my Top 10 of all time.

Since we saw the Illusionist first, we may be jaded, but it seemed to have a better pacing than The Prestige. Otherwise I did enjoy the cast of characters in the movie and the revelations at the end were pretty cool. The Illusionist was cool because it almost bordered on the supernatural and the main character seemed to portray loss a lot better which got you much better onboard with the character and carried the movie.

It's not in my Top 10, and I doubt I'll watch it again...but after seeing the last 30 minutes, it's better than I thought it was after seeing the first 2 hours. The scene with his son was very powerful, and sad...not crying sad, but just heartbreakingly sad - it really showed what a selfish, bitter person he was, and always had been. The only time in the movie I remember him showing ANY compassion for someone else was when the guy died in the oil well/derrick thing.

AGREED! I felt like I wasted some good money on this movie. We were deciding between this and Zohan and felt we made a wrong choice. Zohan is made to be a comedy and this one was unintentional. There are scenes in this movie that totally destroyed any coolness that Indiana Jones had from the previous films.
Yes, I know that you usually have to suspend your disbelief for action films. But when it got to the point where I thought I was watching George of the Jungle, I had already conceded that I made a bad choice.

I just saw The Happening. I don't even have the words to describe how bad this movie was. If you are thinking about watching this, give the $10 to the guy who takes your tickets, ask him to punch you in the nuts, and then leave. You will spend the same amount, feel better, and save 90 minutes. So awful.
