Just saw a few (not much to do lately :D):
Hotel Rwanda - 9/10: Wow, just an utterly moving film. I know it has been described as "Schindler's List in Africa", but it is far more than just that. Yes, you have the guy who sacrifices his well being to save folks from a genocide, but you also have the anger and disappointment as the west decides they aren't going to help (great scene with Nick Nolte at the bar). And it gives a great view of Africa, and the corruption inherant within (this time it is for the good).
History of Violence - 6/10: I guess it was a decent psychological flick, asking the audience to figure out who the main character really is, and then when it reveals that, asking the audience to wonder about some of the backstory. Very slow moving film and not horribly done, but it didn't feel as good as the reviews made it out to be (and perhaps my lower score is a result of not living up to the hype). Though I did like that it wasn't your cookie cutter movie.
House of Flying Daggers - 8/10: This is a very well done martial arts flick. It isn't as good as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" or "Hero", but its got a pretty good story of its own, with a lot of plot twists (it does come from the director of "Hero", after all) and some great action. What puts this movie up to 8/10 instead of 7/10 is just the amazing cinematography. Very well done and I kind of like how the ending leaves it open.

Watched Little Miss Sunshine Friday night. I enjoyed it, would probably give it a 7/10.
Normally, I'm a big fan of quirky humor, which is what I expected this movie to be full of. I acknowledge that it was there, but I expected more of it. I heard some describe this movie as the funniest they had seen all year, so it was a bit of a letdown in that regard. Maybe I would've found the movie funnier if I saw it with an audience...it was just me and my girlfriend watching. A couple of scenes annoyed me, including the gas station and the contents in the trunk.
That said, I thought the movie was very good, not even counting the comedic aspect of it. And Steve Carrell is just an amazing actor.

I watched The Matador last night (Starz On Demand). This film was oddly enjoyable despite Greg Kinnear. I like Pierce Brosnan and thought he was good, but I get the feeling the script was much better than the end product. 7/10.

Catching up on the movies I saw over the weekend...
Thank You For Smoking - 9/10: As discussed in this thread (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=55665), I ordered this on demand Saturday night. Thought it was great and definitely lived up to the hype. Awesome cast down to the supporting characters and the son who freaks me out in every movie he's in. J.K. Simmons is a favorite of mine from Oz, and the guy who played Champ Kind in Anchorman cracks me up. Found it really hard to argue with the basic message portrayed in the movie.
Nacho Libre - 7/10: Rented this with the girl on NYE, knowing it would be a stupid comedy that we could mindlessly laugh through while having some drinks. It hit both of those adjectives. Not much else to really say about this one...

Superman Returns - 8/10: The reviews were lukewarm a bit, but I thought this movie was great. I got all giddy with nostalgia and superhero movie goodness when Superman decided (well perhaps "decided" is the wrong word) to show himself to the world again. The rest of the story was top notch stuff, with an interesting Lux Luthor crazy scheme and the backstory of how Superman fits into a world he's been gone from for 5 years. Really great storytelling, mixing the big evil scheme with 'being Superman'.

Grave of the Fireflys. It's an anime movie about two young children trying to survive in Japan in the last days of WWII. Incredibly powerful movie; it really got to me emotionally. Wonderful movie, though. I think this is one of those that everyone should see. Wonderful.

Funny Dodgerchick wasn't scared as my wife had a horrible nightmare two days after we watched the movie. She thought those creatures were chasing her and nobody else was around. I heard her wake up crying and disorintated - took me like 10 mins to calm her down.

I've watched quite a few movies the past few weeks, after not seeing too many in 2006.
Candyman - 10/10
I first saw this movie when I was around 10 or 11, at home alone, at midnight, and it scared the jeebus out of me. Doesn't have that affect on me anymore, but I still feel this is probably the best horror movie ever made. Has enough slash to satisfy the slasher crowd, and a good enough storyline to satisfy those who like to see more than a guy in a hockey mask hacking teenagers to death.
Gangs of New York - 9/10
Daniel Day Lewis turns in an incredible performance with the Butcher (possibly one of my favourite film characters ever), and takes this movie from about a 6 or 7 to a 9 by himself. That he didn't win an Academy Award for this is... well... not surprising, I guess. Spookily, I'm starting to find that - Titanic aside - I like pretty much every film I've seen Leonardo DiCaprio appear in.
The Lake House - 4/10
Was forced to watch it by the girlfriend, and it might have been a better film if; a) I didn't figure out the "twist/surprise" about 2 minutes in, and; b) they didn't then give us a cop-out ending. That aside, a light-hearted romantic flick that is almost slightly interesting at times. Definately harmless though, and there are worst things you could do with 90 mins.
Borat - 9/10
Wow. Everything I hoped for, and yet there was still so so so much more.
Casino Royale - 8/10
Surprisingly good (for me, at least). I didn't expect to think much of it, but I walked away a believer. The opening sequence is awesome, and despite the length of the film it only seemed like I was in the cinema for like 90 minutes.
A Scanner Darkly - 8.5/10
I thought it was a GREAT adaption of a great book, and even my girlfriend, who has never read the book and has no idea who Philip K. Dick is, really enjoyed it. I was worried the animation would detract from the movie, but it really fitted it perfectly IMO, especially with regard to the scramble suits and the drug effects. The cast selection was also quite good, and matched up pretty well with the image I'd formed in my head of how the characters should look.

Ant and our 6 year old LOOOVE to scare me. I can be really involved in a WW game and they come from behind me and scare the shit outta me. dola,
Ant loves scary movies so I have to watch them by default. We'll be sitting on the couch and I have my mouth covered (cuz God knows I HAVE to do that otherwise I'll end up screaming) and he'll grab a pillow and throw it at me at the most intense moment. Or when the movie is over he'll talk in this creepy voice that scares the shit outta me.
Oh yeah, fun times

Clerks 2 - 7/10. Kevin Smith goes back to basics, and comes up with a great movie. Several laugh out loud scenes.
Talladega Nights - 8/10. Great movie, tons of quotable lines. "Don't let the invisible fire take my friend!"

Reminds me, I saw Apocalypto recently as well:
Apocalypto - 4/10: Meh... very interest Mayan city, but really a bare bones plot and a chase scene. I think you could have picked a far better plot line to explain how a civilzation collapses (which I believe Mel said was his reasons). It was nice to see the environmental degradation (as that did contribute IRL). The straw that broke the back (and dropped it below 50%) was when the wife had the kid in the water. Utterly silly and Hollywood-ish.

I have nothing but a passing interest in Mayan civilization (though that has probably changed since seeing the movie, as I found myself looking at some Mayan history books yesterday afternoon), but I definately liked the idea behind the movie, and it's portrayal of the degredation of the Mayan society from within. Most people put the emphasis on its destruction with the Spanish, but they had a lot of help from the native tribes who allied themselves with the Spanish, and without whom the Spanish would not have succeeded.
Mel Gibson could easily have made a big bloated epic about this particular issue (complete with evil Spanish dudes shooting truckloads of natives, and an evil Mayan king as a main character), but instead he made it a far more personal movie about a man and his family, and I think it was a better movie for it.

I believe you are thinking about the Aztecs here. In fact, it was amusing that the people I was with were confused with the Spanish at the end, thinking it was about the Maya, but then the end was the Aztec... but the Spanish did visit the Maya when they were just about finished at the end. Though it did take the Spaniards a while to take them because it was basically a number of city states (with no central political authority, as opposed to the Aztecs with Tenochtitlan or the Inka with Cuzco).
Most people don't even realize the Maya were still around when the Spanish came to the New World.

Inside Man - 6/10
Interesting story of a bank heist that doesn't follow a normal script for a bank heist, but still just an OK movie. I'm not a huge Spike Lee fan, and this movie reminded me why. Over the top bad language, and over the top attitude everywhere, and really not a single character to root for. It is probably more realistic in that even the good guys have flaws and are not always good.

I didn't necessarily get the point of her character. She was supposed to be the "go-to" character for integrity and discretion, yet she played the situation to her advantage and not her client's. Just seemed like a poor way to make us think she earned her reputation.

Well worth seeing. Clive Owen continues to be solid in everything I've seen him in (which isn't that much, i'll admit) and the direction was absolutely fantastic. They set the mood perfectly. Pan's Labyrinth - 8.5/10
Billed as an "adult fairy tale". Set in Franco-era Spain, a young girl and her mother move in with their sadistic step-father, a captain in Franco's army. The young girl then lives out a classic fairy tale - not the Disney kind - the kind that includes monsters that eat children.
Very well made, very engaging, and very graphic. My wife (who is usually pretty tough) had to look away from the screen a number of times. The whole movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. Not a movie I would want to watch often, but well worth a single viewing.

Sherrybaby: 0.1/10 - Wow, thankfully, it was a quick 45 minutes, but even that was too much to bare. Only the 2nd movie I've rented that I've cut off before it finished (the Producers was the other). If I wanted to see Maggie Gyllenhaal nude, I'd watch my home movies.

Pride and Prejudice - 9/10: Ok, maybe I'm risking my man credentials here, but this was a superbly done film. Sure, had some chick flick cliches, but considering that the source material practically created the chick flick cliche, slack is given. Keira Knightly was absolutely wonderful as the main character and showed some very nice acting chops. Matthew MacFadyen stole every scene he was in as Mr. Darcy, well, when Dame Judi Dench wasn't (she always steals scenes; she can't help it). Seemed very accurate portrayal of the late 18th Century England as well, along with the class issues of the day (though obvious it couldn't go too deep into those things).

Undercover Brother (http://www.imdb.com/find?s=all&q=undercover+brother) 9.2 / 10

Little Children - Really not sure where I rest on this one. Did anyone else see it? It really had me hooked for quite a while and then honestly lost me in the final 1/2 hour. A number of the resolutions just didn't feel honest to the characters that had been developed.
I liked Kate Winslet (always, for that matter.. best actress of her generation IMHO) and Patrick Wilson is now 2-for-2 with me (Hard Candy being the other movie i've seen him in).
Worth watching, but I just think the script lets itself down in the end.

Hannibal Rising: 4/10. Wife wanted to see this so we went to a matinee for the start of our valentine's day celebrations. She thought it was very good. I thought it was below average to bad, and this score is upped a bit by her liking the movie. I thought it cast Hannibal in a very different light than any of the other movies and I didn't find it to be true to the character. Also, while she thought the actor did a very good job portraying a young Hannibal, I thought he was barely passable.

I had a "Samurai DVD" nite on the weekend. I've seen the first two movies at least 10-15 times, but they never get old to me.
Kagemusha - 9.5/10
Each time I watch this movie I get something new out of it. It falls short of a perfect score merely because Kurosawa has done better films than this one, but by any other director this would be a 10.
Ran - 10/10
I can totally see how some folks would find this movie boring - the middle section when Lord Ichimonji loses his sanity in particular - but to me this film is perfection, and ranks as the best film Kurosawa ever made.
Kill! - 6.5/10
Another Nakadai film, but not by Kurosawa. Highly praised generally but I was dissapointed, largely because it builds up to a climax and then just ends without resolution. I know now this is because it was planned as a trilogy that was never completed, but it subtracts from the enjoyment of this film which is a shame.

On the plane on the way home last week. It was a train wreck of a movie but watching Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz rolling around together for much of the movie made it work watching the whole thing. :D
A Beautiful Mind - 9/10
Also on the plane on the way home. I have watched it before and it is a good movie overall. I liked it more the first time I saw it as I did not know the background story and the way the movie played out became a surprise to me. Half Nelson - Ryan Gossling is the lead, and he has been nominated for best actor. He's great, and Shareeka Epps in very good in her first real role (well, she played the same character in the short film that the movie is based off).
It's a very good movie, definitely a unique take on the "teacher trying to actually make a difference" motif in the regard that there are no perfect characters and it's not paint-by-numbers.
Well worth seeing.

The Devil Wears Prada - Combines two of my least favorite things: Chick Flicks and Fashion. If they had made it a musical, it'd possibly be my personal hell. Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress. She really was great as the characeter, but it was situation where she is CLEARLY not the lead in the film, so i take issue with the nomination.
I expected to hate it with a total passion, but it wasn't horrible. In fact I'm embarassed to admit I thought I would give it a positve review about 2/3 of the way through, but the ending was pretty high on the unbeleivable scale, so I'm just barely not recommending it.

Pan's Labyrinth - 10/10: Yeah, it was that good. As stated before an "adult fairy tale", but definately not what I expected (in a good way). Lots of violent scenes, not just involving the fantasy stuff (it's like a Brothers Grimm type of tale), but also the Spanish (Francoist) troops.
Best foriegn film I've seen since Crouching Tiger, I think. Or Hero. There were a LOT of interesting questions raised by the movie. It was gorgeous with its special effects, had a great story, and also caused you to think a little. They don't make many movies on this side of the pond that much anymore.

Munich - Has some very good, very tense moments and overall the acting is solid, but I just found the last half boring, and the last 1/2 or so was just a little too bang-you-over-the-head obvious with imagery. Speilberg is just too neat and clean sometimes, and i think it often hurts the movie. In the end I found this to be a very, very average movie.

Speaking of movies that came out a while ago that I haven't seen, what's the general consensus on Elizabethtown? I assume it's the typical chick flick, but I hope it's at least entertaining. I'll be seeing it soon since we just found out that most of it was filmed not in Elizabethtown, but where we live in Versailles. That will make it mildly interesting in and of itself, but I hope the movie is decent.
Same with Dreamer, which was filmed all around Lexington. That was a decent movie as well as interesting from a "spot the location" perspective.

I haven't seen it myself, but the fact that it's a Cameron Crowe film would make me inclined to give it a shot. He literally hasn't directed a bad film: Say Anything, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky. That's his complete list of directed films prior to Elizabethtown, and none of those would sit on a list of movies people regretted watching.

The Departed 7/10 I think this movie suffers from Philadelphia/Thin Red Line/ Lost in Traslation syndrome. The critics all gushed over it and everyone told me how good it was going to be and I kept waiting for the moment where I said "Yeah, I can see why this is the runaway favorite for best picture." Had I known nothing about it going in I think I would really enjoyed it more, but I kept waiting for something to really move me or wow me. I am sure there are plenty of movies that don't come near this that I might even rate higher but I remember at the end kind of feeling let down.

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420223/
3 of 5 stars, thumbs up
Very entertaining movie, definitely something i'd rank in the "pleasant surprise" category. Will Farrell was pretty solid in a mostly serious role. There is definite hope for him having a crossover career in the style of Jim Carrey. He'll still be a predominantly comedic actor, but he can play serious believably.
I was mostly happy to see that the Queen Latifah character was pretty understated and not as big a part as the original trailer had led me to believe. I'm was also happy that the Maggie Gyllenhaal character was believeable enough, and again not as over-the-top as the original trailer had led me to believe.
I enjoyed the script, and thought it made for a pretty unique film. I'll definitely at least look into what the next writer's project is. Zach Helm is the writer I speak of... it was his first movie.
Overall I was pretty surprised at the relative degree of sublety in the movie... the trailer had led me to believe otherwise months back.

I just saw this one recently and agree with everything you have said. I normally hate WIll Farrell and have not been overly impressed with Maggie Gyllenhaal, but they were both very good in this movie.
Silent Hill - 3.5/10 I'm not a huge fan of horror movies, but I occasionally like the try them out and be scared for a couple of hours. The first two thirds of this movie was fairly decent and creepy, but like most movies of this type, the revelation of the mythos behind all of the creepy was a big letdown. Also the IMDB FAQ on this movie was almost as long as the script which means the director couldn't have done a very good job of telling the story.
Bridge to Terabithia - 7.5/10 This movie is not at all like it appears in the previews. It is not a fantasy movie, and it is not a new Narnia-type movie. This is a coming of age movie which highlights the power of imagination and friendship. I was pleasently surprised by this movie. It evoked a lot of different emotions and was generally well done. AnnaSophia Robb is going to need to find some time for acting lessons as she grows up, but she does do cute very well.

Preach on. I am gay for this movie. I can't even remember the last time I've told so many people to see a movie. But i've been trying really hard to do so in a subtle way so as to not set up the sky-high expectations people get when you truly rave about something. Zodiac - 8/10: Definately not your normal serial killer movie; if you know the real life story, you know what I'm talking about. But a wonderfully acted and plotted movie nonetheless. It really isn't a movie about a serial killer, but more of the obsession that the characters have in trying to solve the mystery and the downward spiral that occurs as a result (especially with Greysmith).
Also amazingly casted. Even some of the most minor parts are played by a fairly well known actor/actress. It was incredibly how they could get such talent for so little parts.

Last week-ish:
Stranger Than Fiction - 7.3/10 - Enjoyed it a bit more than I thought I would. Ferrell was able to carry the heavier scenes solidly, and Maggie G was absolutely lovely, made me forget all about the Sherrybaby debacle (now only if she could get nude in a good movie... and no, Secretary is not a good movie).
Little Miss Sunshine - 4.6/10 - Boring. What was so different about this movie that was unlike all the other quirky family indie type movies?
This Movie is Not Yet Rated - 3.2/10 - It was nice to see the MPAA get called out, but I guess I'm just not a documentary type person.
The Heart of the Game - 4.7/10 - An OK movie. Took dedication to follow the girls team around for 6 years.
Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny - 6.5/10 - It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was harmless and moderately amusing. If you can handle Jack Black, you'll enjoy the movie.
The Holiday - 2.3/10 - Damn, Cameron Diaz looks busted. Kate Winslet is gorgeous as always. Jack Black was good in his limited role, it would be interesting to see what he could do in a movie like this in an expanded role. Otherwise forgettable movie.

Strange Days - 8.5/10
No idea how I'd never heard of this film before. Good idea, decent if stereotypical characters, and a good if predictable climax.
Pan's Labyrinth - 10/10
Said a bit about it in the Pan's Labyrinth thread, and this instantly becomes a favourite movie of mine. Walked in to the cinema with no expectations, and was absolutely blown away. Watch it if you haven't already.
Zatoichi - 8/10
The latest one from a few years ago. Very fun movie. Lots of folks weren't happy with Beat Takeshi playing Zatoichi, but I thought he did a great job, and the support characters were all pretty solid, especially Tadanobu Asano as Hattori Genosuke.
Laputa: Castle in the Sky - 6.5/10
Pretty uneven effort compared with other Studio Ghibli classics IMO. Had some really great things about it, but also dragged in places. Scores lower than it probably deserves because of how much I've enjoyed the other Ghibli releases like Mononoke/Pom Poko/Totoro/et al.

3 of 5 stars, thumbs up
Probably the best Spike Lee film I've seen, and a thoroughly non-Spike Lee movie on it's own. I think it's best that he decided to leave his unique/bizzare sense of social commentary aside for a film.
Clive Owen continues to impress me and turns in another solid performance. Jodie Foster is good, Denzel Washington continues to be OK at playing the same character over and over again.
Nice, solid but unspectacular drama/thriller.
edit: and Chiwetel Ejiofor needs to be in more movies. The guy has been perfect in everything I've seen him in.

Tell me more please?
Yamato is about the a group of friends who are crew aboard the Battleship Yamato in WWII. The Yamato was the biggest battleship ever built and the pride of the Japanes navy.
In the movie we follow the persons as they leave their families to go to war. The bond between the main characters is shown and we get to see that they are just normal people like everybody else.
Also, the movie follows a descendant of one of the main characters as she tries to get to the place where the Yamato was sunk on the 50th anniversary of its loss.
By coincidence she meets one of the main characters, who agrees to sail her to the place.
Maybe I should notch the rating up by a point to 7.5/10.
Its worth watching.

The Departed 7/10 - Maybe scored alittle low because of the hype. I thought it was a good movie, but not nearly as good as the hype and praise for it has been. Glad to see Scorsese win an Oscar, though.
I had wanted to see this movie for quite a while but was afraid of being disappointed by it. After finally watching it today I can happily say that I wasn't the least bit disappointed. Fantastic movie. This was one of the few times I didn't see absolutely everything coming before it happened. About all I would recommend is for people to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Ricky Bobby, Talladega Nights (5/10) I love ferrell, in supporting roles. When hes a leading actor i tend to be dissapointed. Most of the movie was pretty boring to me, and the only scene salvaging this score was in the hospital. Other then that, yawn.
We saw this movie last weekend. It was OK. Ferrell is the Cheap Trick of comedy actors - hasn't lived up to his potential and it's hard to understand how comedy gold and comedy crap/filler can be so seemlessly interwoven into one movie. He takes you to the point where you think he's going to kill you, then he drops the ball. Most of the movie was pretty boring, actually. He reminds me of Adam Sandler, in some ways - some really great stuff, mostly boring, and some bizarre/out of the blue "comedy" that just doesn't work for me.
I haven't seen Borat or much of Cohen in general, but I thought Cohen's character in this movie was really weak. There was nothing funny about the character, really, although it seemed like they were going for laughs with his accent. But when you consider that the funny French accent was done by Peter Sellers 30 years ago to the point of perfection, Cohen didn't come close to eliciting a laugh from me.

Little Miss Sunshine- 9.5/10- Unbelievable humor. Great charectures and amazing acting. Olives pagent was beyond funny. the only knock would be it was predictable at parts but even when you knew something was coming it was still great. Brian D -- Liked Cube for most of the pic, but I thought some of the character transformations toward the end came out of left field.
Just saw The 300.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Way over the top with violence and gore (it's Braveheart X 5). The film played fast and loose with the actual history of the event (in addition to the 300 Spartans, 700 additional Greeks made the last stand with King Leonidas); the Persian immortals looked more like Ninja-movie rejects; and wtf with some LOTR monster-types?! In addition, Xerxes was a S&M homosexual's wet dream -- he looked nothing like images that have survived from history. Also, a bit of a right-wing slant (Leonidas is fighting what Greek politicians call an illegal war and they are hesitant to send him reinforcements).
However, for the most part, a very engrossing story...and I'll give them this...those Spartans were bad a$$ mofos.

On the off chance someone isn't aware, Oldboy is actually the second (I think) in a trilogy by Chan-wook Park.
The first being Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (http://imdb.com/title/tt0310775/), followed by Oldboy, then Lady Vengeance (http://imdb.com/title/tt0451094/)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance may deal with themes even more desperate than Oldboy, it's definitely not the feel good movie of the summer. Lady Vengeance isn't quite as bleak, in comparison to the preceding films it feels like a Disney flick. I'd definitely recommend them both highly to anybody who enjoyed Oldboy.
There's been a kind of renaissance in Korean cinema lately, and there's plenty of good stuff to be found if you're willing to sift through some clunkers. I really liked a film called 'Memories of Murder' (http://imdb.com/title/tt0353969/), a true story detailing South Korea's first serial killer in 1986, and the efforts of their podunk police in dealing with a sort of monster which completely exceeded their grasp.

Agree also. I was given two other foreign films to watch last year and loved them both. One was called Kontroll about underground subway police in an Eastern European country. It was very enjoyable. The other was about a group of Japanese kids sent to an island to battle to the death. Absolutely loved it! (Though I can't remember the title for some reason)
Borat: I am not offended by Borat's antics. I used to enjoy the segments on MTV a lot. I am not offended by toilet humor and sex humor either. However, I am offended by unfunny humor. I didn't get this movie at all and I don't get why everyone else "gets it". My friends think that I am just trying to suck up to the women we hang out with that were offended by it, but I thought it really sucked. As a matter of fact the deleted scenes were about the only things that I laughed out from the entire DVD. Thumbs way down. (2/10)

I'd give Borat an 8. If I were going to judge it on the actual jokes and sketches and things, it would be about a 5 - I laughed, but it's not exactly comedic gold. To me, the actual jokes and stupid things that he gets people to say is funny and all, but that's not what makes it such a good movie IMO. I enjoyed it more because it was pretty brilliant satire that was trying to make a point that has much less to do with poo-joke humour than it seems. That he can make a movie like that and still get tons of people rolling in the aisles and not caring about the real issues it's highlighting, well that takes some talent IMO.

I understand that, but it seemed like 75% of the humor was just toilet humor with no social connection at all. Even Bruno on the Ali G show had more exposure of America than this movie. What is being exposed about America's dark side by people getting pissed off about two naked guys wrestling at a convention? Or bringing a bag of shit to the table at a bunch of redneck's party? I would have loved to see him completely take apart organized religion, but instead he seems to just run into a group of some very well intentioned religious zelots who seemed to be hurting nobody. Just wasn't that cutting edge and exposing to me. We know a lot of New Yorkers are assholes, a lot of southerners still have conferate beliefs, and drunk college kids are morons. Again, nothing new to me. I guess I was expecting something shocking. Shrug.

Luke Wilson's character is selected to a hibernation program and was meant to be frozen for a year but is forgotten and wakes up 500 years later to a world that has dumbed down. I'll agree with you to a point. Having seen most of these, I'll give you Goodfellas and Raging Bull being better. I put The Departed at #3. Having seen Flags of our Fathers (not Letters) it is shameful how terrible the movie was compared to the book. I got nothing out of the movie whatsoever. The movie needed to spend more time showing the guys growing up so that we cared about them. That's the touching part of the book. The Departed was the best movie I saw this year but yes, it's not Scorcese's best.

Reign Over Me - 3 of 5 stars
The big question I have is really "why Adam Sandler?" If you're trying to make a movie, why roll the dice on him rather than bring in a true dramatic actor? I guess no one would watch. Maybe it's the same reason you use 9/11 as the backdrop rather than a car accident or a fire or something. Anyway, Sandler is OK, he has some funny moments, but he doesn't quite pull off a number of dramatic scenes for me (mostly in the final 1/3rd of the film). I will say that overall Sandler played a pretty good crazy character, and not Hollywood crazy (like someone zany and eccentric), but real-world, a little bit scary to be around crazy. The character felt believably unstable.
Don Cheadle does his thing and turns in another very solid under-the-radar performance. He feels like a real character surrounded by a couple suspect ones. The last 1/3rd drags and there were a couple awkward plot points I won't get into.
I don't regret watching this movie, but I wouldn't really recommend it either. I am entirely neutral towards this movie.

You basically said why I'm unsure about this movie. I don't get Sandler in the role. My wife made the comment that they chose him because of that. He could do both parts because people know what he's usually like and to see him like that would get the point across better.

That's a pretty interesting take on it, I could buy that. I'm not saying Sandler is a bad actor or that he shouldn't try his hand at drama - I just mean that if I was the movie producer, he seems like an unnecessary risk and more likely a distraction than an asset.
Ultimately it's tough to know whether he can fully pull it off, because I think the writing lets the movie down far more than any performances do. I was on board with the movie halfway through, but felt it just fell apart.

Craig was very cool and sexy. This was my first Bond movie and now that we have Blockbuster Total Access, I'll be renting a whole bunch of them to catch up. I heard on a movie podcast that Tarantino was asked to direct this movie but declined because he felt Brosnan was the best Bond ever... dunno if that's true or not. Great movie I can't believe I missed out on so much.
We have Snakes on a Plane which I'm planning on watching tonight and Children of Men is also awaiting to be seen.

I couldn't disagree with you anymore. Elizabeth has got to be my favorite movie of all time. I just really seem to be able to relate to it. Maybe it's because of my relationship with my father or whatnot but it's a masterpiece IMO.

Children of Men - 8/10 This movie was very different than I expected. I knew the premise that children weren't being born and society was just getting older, but that was really just the backdrop of the movie. The real story was about how quickly and easily everything can fall apart and create a dystopia. I've always been a fan of dystopian stories and this one was pretty decent. The final act was a bit disappointing when the focus shifted in ways I won't spoil for anyone, but still pretty good.

I enjoyed this one. It wasn't just that it was overall well done, but it goes against the trend of movies nowadays, with a believable premise and not going overheaby on explosions and bautiful people like we usually see.

Children of Men 7/10 I have to say I was disappointed in the ending. But over all it was a good movie with great acting. It is one of those movies that really makes you think about the future and how quickly it can all fall apart.
The Illusionist 9.5/10 This was a terrific movie. I wasn't expecting a lot when I start watching but it was extremely interesting with a terrific plot. The ending could have been a little better but it was still a great movie.

GRINDHOUSE!
Very amped to see this because of Tarantino.
The presentation was very old schooly.
I'll give it overall a 7/10.
Planet Terror - 5/10. I got some laughs but I am completely disinterested in zombie films and I don't even think this was a good one, but I think still Rodriguez accomplished what he set out to do. Make it a little cheesey, a little over the top, a lot of action. Rose McGowan is hot.
Death Proof - 8/10. Tarantino is still a master of dialogue. I like how there were NO special effects in this at all. I liked it, of course I'd like it, it's Tarantino. JeeberD if you are reading, Shiner Bock is all over in this movie. Anyways, it was worth the price of admission.

Shooter - 7.5/10
I went in wanting to see a different flick, but my buddies swapped at the last second. Really not expecting much, because ive never been a big marc wahlberg fan and simply didnt know anything about it. To be honest, for not expecting much i really enjoyed it. Maybe a bad anology, but its where i compare it, so bear with. Its very similar to 300 in the sense that there is a plot, its just kind of weak...the movie is 2 hours of action basically, and it was fun. Nice little ending twist to clean up the story i didnt get until then, and kate mara is a beautiful young lady if i do say so myself.
Scoop - 2.5/10
Now i know why i avoid woody allen movies...i thought hugh jackman might be able to make a movie out of this, but it was 2 hours of not funny. Scarlett Johannson was god awful, and woody allen made my eyes bleed. GAG!
Premonition - 7/10
This is a score i had to give after reflecting for a few days...when i first walked out of the theatre i didnt like it much. Very depressing movie, very confusing movie, and its sandra bullock(serves me right for letting the girl pick the movie for the date). Anyways, after thinking about it i really have to say the movie itself was interesting. Its a time-travel movie of sorts, and is one of those where it all comes together at the end. All loose-ends were tied up, and really was a pretty well thought out movie. For me, its one of those movies where it was a good movie, i just didnt enjoy it all that much. Some movies are great movies and great fun, some are great fun but crappy movies, this was a great movie but just not fun. Take that for what you will...
So shooter was fun but not neceassarily good, and premonition was good but no fun. And Scoop was just crap...

The 300 - 8/10
Saw it at IMAX, and I think watching it on that massive screen really enhanced the viewing experience. Yeah, it was flash without much substance complete with a Xerxes who looked straight out of an episode of Stargate, but as a stylish fantasy flick it was pretty good in my books.
Porco Rosso - 8.5/10
I liked this more than I expected. A very fun movie in the usual Miyazaki style, albeit a little more serious in some parts. The "plane graveyard" scene was particularily awesome.

Children of Men - 5/10 Nothing new here. It just didn't do anything for me. Pretty boring. Wondering what all the fuss was about.

Grindhouse - 10/10 I don't give out a score like this easily, but this was the most fun I have ever had at a movie. It really helps to know the aim of the directors going into this movie. If you don't know they are going for a horror/terror double-feature in the 70's style, the movie won't be near as fun. This will probably also be a hit or miss movie with some people rating it very high and some very low. It was over the top in the right places, gruesome and funny at the same time and overall just a blast.

Disturbia - 3 of 5 stars, thumbs up
I went in with basically no expectations, this was a sort of "just going to see a movie" movie. I think Shia LaBeouf is a very solid actor, and he is actually a character in a movie where it could have easily been a cardboard cutout role. I thought he and his friend Ronnie were solid and funny chracters. The chick was pretty weak, but overall the movie works enough to enjoy. It's definitely aimed at young teens, but I liked it. Far better than most thrillers going for that audience. Thumbs up.
And it's basically a flat-out remake of Rear Window without officially crediting it.

REIGN OVER ME - There were times during the movie where I just wasn't getting it... wasn't enjoying it. I've sat here for about 3 hours now and thinking about it, maybe Sandler didn't sell his character well enough for me. He was ok, he wasn't terrible, but I just didn't see a real person there... Cheadle, one of my favorite actors, I think was mis-cast but still played his usual "I can't believe this shit" scenes as well as anybody in the business. I hated the last 20 minutes, absolutely hated the ending. Ugh.

Hot Fuzz-- 9/10
This movie had some brilliant and hilarious moments in it. Anyone who loves the cliched action cop thrillers should check this out. They cram every cliche in the book into this one, on purpose, to make fun of it. It was a little slow at first, but enjoyable, maybe a bit overlong. And then the last 30 minutes or so(which, of course, I won't detail) moved into the sublime and really brought the whole satire together.
I'm probably going to go see Fracture tonight.

It's probably more of a 9 out of 10 on my scale, noting I have tor eally hate a movie to give it below a 5. I mean, mediocre and forgettable probably gets a 6 out of me. I gave Shooter a 7.5, and that's a typical action movie (even if I enjoyed it enough to raise it slightly above typical).
So Hot Fuzz is graded more on that scale. It's probably closer to your 3 of 5 stars than it seems. Like 3.5 perhaps.

Meh. Better than Rocky 5, but I thought it was pretty....uneven. And the fight at the end reminded me of the phrase "sometimes less is more". It was way too "busy". I'm not talking about the amount of punches and the way they reacted to them (typical "Rocky" fight), they just tried to hard to fit in flashes of old Rocky movies, to the point where it's overkill.

Double whammy last night:
Fracture - Hopkins and Gosling were perfectly cast. Hopkins is just so creepy, and Gosling is just young enough to be believably rattled. I thought it was pretty good, there were some holes, but it was damn worth the $7.50 (x2) admission price. 8.5/10
In The Land of Women - The woman sucked me into seeing this. Roeper called it "The Garden State of Michigan." So I wasn't too pissed off about having to see it. I'm still a little unsure about this one. It contained all the stereotypical sci-fi elements that have been beaten to death in every sci-fi film over the past couple of decades, but the film did it with style. Character-wise it was pretty weak effort I thought. It tried to quickly brush on aspects of the characters, but it was never really fleshed out. Could have maybe used less characters which would've given them the chance to flesh it out more. It also suffered from trying to get a little bit too "2001"-esque towards the end of the film.
All-in-all it was an enjoyable and pretty exciting movie at times, but it was let down by a lack of originality and unremarkable characters. It's basically two parts Solaris (the newer one with Clooney), one part Event Horizon, one part 2001.
Loved the soundtrack though.

Well, I don't take it personally. Different strokes for different folks. Damon was just plain bad, IMO. If it were not a Scorsese movie, I would have said he was getting bad direction. Nicholson just didn't fit his role. And Wahlberg didn't do anything at all with the little he was given. He wasn't awful, but he brought nothing to the film.

Two on DVD, one in the theater:
Syriana - 7/10 - a bit dry at times, put a pretty facinating story where all the wide ranging stories come together in the end. Clooney was excellent in his role, as was Damon, and the guy who played the liberal emir.
Munich - 9/10 - a shame it didn't get a nomination for an Academy Award. Now that I've seen it, I think it was probably the best movie of the past year (save for Pan's Labyrinth, but foriegn films never win the top prize). It's two movies really, one performing "the mission" and the other dealing with the aftermath. It's the aftermath part which really sets it apart. How does a person deal with that much death and paranoia. Brilliant stuff, and Eric Bana is perfect for the main role.
Hot Fuzz - 9/10 - Just utterly hilarious. They topped Shawn of the Dead, and I wasn't sure that they could. But Hot Fuzz just was so much better. I don't think I've seen another movie which had so many laughs per minute. Many memorable scenes, such as the emptying out the pub and two pistols on a bike make this one I'll look to get on DVD.

Away From Her (8/10)
This is a film directed by Sarah Polley about an older married couple who deal with separation when the wife is diagnosed with Alzheimer's and goes to a nursing home. Handled in a very mature fashion, not like a tv-movie. In the cast is Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis. I think Christie has an excellent shot at an Oscar nomination.
The TV Set (7/10)
David Duchovny and Sigourney Weaver in a movie that satires the process of a TV pilot from casting until finished product. Duchovny watches as his original vision of the show is ripped apart by bitchy Weaver. Pretty funny stuff, if a little obvious. Has an annoying subplot that doesn't work.
