anyway, i've been writing down my ideas for a very unique kind of league, and am trying to guage interest. behind the scenes i've already been in talks w/ 2 FOFC regulars who've read my ideas and are on board for such an association, they seem to be rather keen in my plans.
in the below i'm going to take the liberty of cutting and pasting parts of my correspondence with them in order to fill you in on what i have in mind. some associations are here today, and gone tomorrow. others have staying power. but for all intents and purposes the game structure remains the same, other than minor variables (real teams vs. fictional, many sims per week vs. slower paced, etc.). i'm looking to be a catalyst for a league that would break the mold.
FOF is great for simming games, but as we know - the NFL is not a league full of saints and real life isn't so mistake-free. people get arrested, people get greedy and want more (playing time, exposure, etc.). athletes even die, in extreme cases (Korey Stringer). these things aren't reflected accurately (or, perhaps, to their fullest extent) in the game. what i was looking to do was find a way to incorporate these "events" into a league. i think i'm creating a very, very unique structure.
using dice.
combining a text sim with D&D (i've never played it, but that's the gist). every league has a commish. no league has a "Puppet Master" (PM). what's a PM you say? the PM is the guy behind the scenes who determines the severity of the event that will happen, and to what player(s). i'm trying to write the rules as to how it would happen. right now all i got is if something will happen (let's face it, in any given season there's only 2 or 3 major stories, the rest is business as usual, i'm not trying to make something where there's no stability week to week) and what. i have the general idea of how to determine which team(s) would be affected and which player(s).
now, the PM doesn't manipulate any files. merely he determines what happens, and to whom, and would post the outcome in a "news" format: you would read an article written by "ESPN" with bold headlines. maybe "FOX News" or "Sports Illustrated" would break the latest mishap.
so let's say the PM determines that Team G's WR Joe Smith got arrested. how would that be simulated in-game? Team G would have to inactivate Joe Smith for a week. if the PM determines Bob Jones - DE for Team X - was found to be using illegal substances Team X would have to inactive Bob Jones for the entire year and release him at season's end to simulate the player being kicked out of the league for violating the league's substance abuse policy. now, rest assured, extreme cases where a player is not allowed to be in the league anymore wouldn't be a weekly occurance. i'm trying to tweak the formula right now to determine exactly what has to be rolled for outrageous things like someone passing away so it's an ultra-RARE event.
the other major idea i have (taking me longer to work out the logistics) concerns GM's having their employment terminated.
you heard me right.
if you want to never be fired then you can play in a solo career or in one basically every other MP league. but that's not real life. in your average league you can stink up the joint for seasons on end without any repurcussions, but we know that's not the case in real life. in real life you do a shitty job - you pay the consequences. in this league i'm considering forming if that owner gets "fired", he simply has to give up control of his team and take over many one of a few teams we designate as "ghost teams". out of a 32 team league we would fill it up to maybe 25 or so, the rest are vacant
teams that you go to when you get fired. so you're always in the league, but if you suck you don't always have control of the same team forever.
i have an idea as to how the league would be run. i wouldn't want people who just export. every owner would have to be into writing articles and such.
i don't want to be the commish, i'm too in your face to be a neutral commish, i piss people off too much (no news to you). i just think it'd be tremendously fun to log into the league website one morning and find out via "breaking news" sports article that your WR just got arrested for cocaine possession and will be going to jail for 4 months (you'd have to inactive him for 4 whole months! wouldn't that suck!).
big ideas. the hard part is finding a commish and willing participants. it'd be an entirely new FOF experience.
