Quik, what do you think about going after DTs Salcido and Compton?

vex

Only one reason for not offering scholarships - it was a house rule (that I'd seen other people use) that I threw out in the thread and never really received any responses. From a personal standpoint, I'd love to bag it, but the silence was taken by me as an unofficial approving nod.

Consider it gone - scholarships on a first call/visit is now part of the plan.
It was more of a confused nod I think;)

Sorry -- I must have missed it entirely. I'd have no problem playing with some hose rules (including that one), I just missed the original discussion about it.

I'm indifferent, in that event (honestly). I'm fine with a self-imposed restriction... though it might require us to re-evaluate some of our recruiting targets.

Nah, let's go without it. The only one I'll keep is a single phone call + visit per week.

Quik, what do you think about going after DTs Salcido and Compton?

How about DT Allen Castillo? Run-inclined, ranked 6th at the position, good attitude, decent academics, and nobody is after him yet.

Compton is also a run-first guy, and is also unpursued thus far.

Salcido is likely to be more ready-to-play, but is a lesser player in most other respects.

How about Castillo and Compton?

vex
09-27-2004, 10:56 AM
Sounds good to me. I don't have access to TCY til about 2. What is Castillo ranked and what is his athletic prep?

And does it seem best to go after the two DEs we contcted in week one, for now?

EDIT: Visit and Offer(If we should) Compton and Castillo, Craig.

QuikSand

Oops - closed the game. Castillo was rated pretty highly -- he's the 6th-rated DT, higher than both of the other guys... maybe an 81/100 rating (from memory)? His Ath Prep was something like 35 -- about the same as Compton, not as high as Salcido.

Here's this week's recruiting update (before the week was run, but showing visits, phone calls, scholarship offers, etc.)

Vex & Quik - I tried to fit everyone in, but we ran out of on-site visits pretty early on. I therefore had to do just call some possible recruits. I tried to spread the visit invites around while staying as close as possible to Vex's recommendations. One thing we missed because of last weeks last of visit requests are scholarship offers to our guards. Therefore, I took a couple phone calls to stay in contact with them. Next week, I'd like to have them visit and offer scholarships and make that a priority.

N.C. State (-7) at Ohio, TV4

67 degrees and raining. Ohio wins the toss and elects to receive.

The first kickoff in FOFC's TCY Groupthink travels 70 yards. Touchback. Ohio starts at their own 20 yard line.

CraigSca

After an offensive holding penalty on the first play from scrimmage, Ohio tries to run off tackle and all-everything Herman Sanderson drops him for a one yard loss! Ohio gives it to Matthews on 2nd and 21 and Sanderson again blasts him, this time for a 3 yard loss, bringing up 3rd and 24 at the Ohio 6-yard line. A false start penalty makes it 3rd and 27 (good grief). Ohio's Saleaumua runs a trap up the middle for a 16 yard gain (tackled by Thurman Arnswaldt & Neal Hollins). Big play, but still a 3 and out :)

Ohio punts, and Wertz calls a fair catch at the Ohio 49. 12:59 left in the 1st. Bring on the offense!

Wow, despite Ohio's 8-man front  , Orlando Macri takes the handoff and runs up the middle for 15 yards (key block by RT Kevin Miller). Gino Linquist carries the ball next and gains 3 yards. 2nd and 7 at the 31. Macri gets the call on 2nd down and runs around the right end for 2 yards, bringing up a 3rd and 5 at the 29. Looks like our first pass attempt...Kenny Spragan can't find anyone open so does it himself with a 5 yard scramble - first down! We try a pass again on 1st down - Kenneth Wertz is open and Spragan connects - 22 yard pass play to the 2 yard line! On 1st and goal, Spragan finds Pete Dodge in the flat for the 2 yard TD pass! Allen kicks the extra point, and it's N.C. State 7, Ohio 0 - 10:13 left in the 1st.

6 plays, 49 yards, 2:46

Short kickoff by Allen (52 yards) and a 16 yard return gives Ohio the ball on their own 29. Incomplete pass by the Ohio QB on 1st down, and listen to this commentary, "NCST 73 Schmaltz uprooted and discarded OHIO 73 Mandel and hurried the quarterback." :D 2nd down pass is dropped by the Ohio receiver - 3rd and 10. 8-yard run off left guard - tackled by CJ Schmaltz. 3 and out! Whoa...Ohio surprises and picks up the first down (despite our 8-man front). 9 yard gain around the left end, Neal Hollins gets the stop. 1st and 10 Ohio at their own 46. Another stop by Hollins on a run around the right end - 3 yard gain. Ohio tries yet another run around the right end, but this time CJ Schmaltz and Herman Sanderson drop the ballcarrier for a 2 yard loss. 3rd and 9. An incomplete pass on 3rd down...I assume they'll punt this time.

They do, and Wertz returns the ball to our own 10. Will have to be a long drive this time. Let's see how we do.

Ohio is staying in an 8-man front, daring us to pass. Linquist gets the call on first down gaining 3 yards up the middle. Spragan fades back on 2nd down and finds Donald Clark open for a 21 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the 34 - Spragan throws away from double coverage in the direction of Kenneth Wertz, but it's defended by the Ohio cornerback. Spragan throws behind the line to Pete Dodge who muscles his way 15 yards on his own for a first down. 1st and 10 at the 48. False start, and somehow we suffer our first injury - Gino Linquist. Doesn't say it's serious, so we're hopeful. Spragan finds Wertz on the short pass and Wertz gains 10 yards after the catch for a 14 yard gain. 2nd and 1 at the Ohio 43. Macri gains 5 yards off the right guard for the first down (RG Cedric Wayne knocked the Ohio defender flat to create the hole). Spragan again fades back and finds the RB Orlando Macri in the flat - Macri twists, turns and rumbles for an additional 17 yards. 1st and 10 at the Ohio 18. BJ Ramirez gets his first carry of the game and takes it up the middle for 5 (key block by Miller). False start again. 2nd and 10, and Ramirez is stopped cold for a 1 yard loss. Pete Dodge gets hurt on the play, and this IS a serious injury. ARGH. 3rd and 11 at the 19. Spragan finds TE Jack Mackie for 11 yards - first down! False start AGAIN. Macri runs offtackle for 3 yards. 2 and goal at the 10. Macri runs around the right end for 4, bringing up a key 3rd and goal at the 6. Controversial call as Macri runs it off the left tackle and is stopped 3 yards short of the goal line. Allen connects on the 20 yard FG to give NC State a 10-0 lead with 21 seconds left in the 1st.

13 plays, 102 yards, 6:51

A 60 yard kickoff is returned 69 yards  to the N.C. State 26 yard line, ending the first quarter.

NC STATE 10, Ohio 0, end of first quarter

NC State: 9 first downs, 47 yards rushing, 104 yards passing
Ohio: 1 first down, 30 yards rushing, 0 yards passing

N.C. State 10, Ohio 0

1st and 10 Ohio at our 26. Ohio runs around left end for a 12 yard gain (SS OJ Brooks gets the stop). Another run, another stop by Brooks - but this time for a 3 yard loss. 2nd and 13 at our 17. A draw play doesn't fool Steve Durham and Henry Westbrook - 1 yard loss. 3rd and 14. A 3rd down pass is completed, but only to the 15 (tackle by Arnswaldt). A 32 yard FG attempt is missed wide right! We escape unscathed!

1st and 10 at our own 20. Macri gets a block by Newt Lentzner and pushes forward for 8 yards. Ramirez goes offguard but is stopped for no gain. 3rd and 2. Spragan fades to pass but overthrows Wertz. Our first 3 and out :(. McCarthy punts 59 yards (!), returned for 4. Ohio starts at their own 17. Great punt!

NT David Finley hurries the quarterback on 1st down forcing an incompletion. Finley gets the stop on 2nd down after a 2 yard gain by the Ohio runningback. On 3rd and 8, we get our first sack of the year! WILB Neal Hollins drops Saleaumua for a 5 yard loss! 3 and out!

35 yard punt, returned 5 yards by Kenneth Wertz. We start on their 44 yard line.

Ramirez goes offtackle for a yard. So far I've been less than impressed with BJ's running. Spragan connects with Trent Brodie for a 7 yard gain - 3rd and 2. Jack Mackie collects the pass on 3rd down and takes it down to the 23 yard line. We try and confuse them by running a QB draw on first but it only nets us 3 yards. 2nd and 7. Ramirez gets the call and gains two yards up the middle. 3rd and 5. Spragan finds Trent Brodie again and he's stopped just short of the goal line after a 17 yard gain. On first and goal Spragan throws it to Kenneth Wertz for his second TD pass of the game! Allen kicks the EP, and we're ahead, 17-0. 7:25 left in the half.

7 plays, 44 yards, 3:02

60 yard kickoff by Allen is returned 95 yards for a TD. Good grief. We need to fill the special teams coach position as soon as possible! N.C. State 17, Ohio 7 - 7:17 left in the half.

Touchback on the kick. We start at our own 20. I'm hoping the shock of the TD doesn't shift momentum. Spragan has officially found a new favorite target: Trent Brodie. A 21 yard pass on first down proves it :). A screen to Orlando Macri, and he finds an opening for a 9 yard gain. Spragan hands off to Macri, but he's stopped cold for a 3 yard loss. 3rd and 4. Macri has 8 carries for 37 yards so far. Ugh...apparently I forgot to hit pause....but apparently we turned it over and Ohio ran a few plays. Sigh - sorry guys, I guess we'll find out what happened in the log. Ohio has it 4th and 6 at our 30 yard line. They go for it, and OJ Brooks stops their RB after a 1 yard gain. Turned over on downs.

Spragan to Macri for a 12 yard pass on first down, ball on the 41 yard line, 2:44 left. Macri takes the Cedric Wayne block for 7 yards. Short pass to Macri nets 3 yards and a first down. 1:17 left at the Ohio 49. Incomplete pass to Brodie on first down. Incomplete pass, 1:04 left. One yard completion to Earnest Sweeney. 4th and 9 - 57 secs left. We stay cautious and punt - 33 yarder returned for 13 yards. Ohio has the ball at their 28 with 46 seconds left.

Ohio is playing it safe too, content to stay within 10 at halftime. A run up the middle nets 6 yards (tackle by Bubba Flynn). On 2nd down Ohio tries to catch us sleeping, but we have Arnswaldt and Hollins blitzing. Hollins blasts through the line and collects his 2nd sack of the day! 3rd and 9 at the 29. Westbrook defends the 3rd down pass - 4th and 9 - 4 seconds in the half. Ohio punts, and the ball is downed at the NC State 20. End of the second half.

NC State 17, Ohio 7

N.C. State: 15 first downs, 65 yards rushing, 188 yards passing
Ohio: 2 first downs, 37 yards rushing, 7 yards passing

Complete domination on our part. The only thing keeping them in the game is our horrible special teams coverage.

We're one and OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I was glad to see a good performance by the O-line. I would have liked to see them dominate the game a little more with a couple more key run blocks, but they look good so far. We're going to need to block better if we're going to run on Ohio State.

Sorry, but I've got a few recruiting questions. Why did we visit Ansell again and we definitely shouldn't have visited Feliciano, he wasted nearly 900 points to visit a player we already knew about. And if we would just visit or phone a player, instead of both, we could spread our recruiting out better.

Vex, I took "phone and visit" as phone him and visit him, not phone and offer a visit. My bad, but we need to think of a terminology to separate "visit a recruit" and "offer the recruit to visit".

How about "offer visit" when we want to invite the guy back to our place :D ?

BTW, check out the Yards After Catch for our receivers. It seemed the entire game Spragan was throwing it short (1-3 yards) and our receivers would gain an additional 10 yards on their own. Very impressive, but I'm not sure that happens against Ohio State.

I'm not overly experienced with TCY, but might our short passes be a bit high? Passes completed to the 3 WRs averaged only 3.79 yards in the air. They gained an average of 11.57 YAC on them.

Cool - we are still the only school pursuing DT Allen Castillo. I like him a good deal, and it would be awfully nice to bring down a solid run-stopping DT prospect, even if he'd have to redshirt before being ready to play (an unknown). I'd like to follow up with him - a couple calls, at least, over the next couple of weeks.

I think we are a longshot to land Ansell, but Feliciano might not be impossible. Ohio State is the gorilla in the hunt so far, but they don't have an offer in -- we do. I fully expect Feliciano will attract extra attention in the next couple of weeks, but right now, we're right in there. (He's the #8 prospect nationwide)

We probably have an outside shot with DT Salcido as well - we're tied in prestige on his list. But we don't have an offer in, and GaTech does, along with four other schools.

DT Leonard Compton is probably heading to Indiana - better academics than us, and a much closer school. Too bad, but I think we walk away there.

DT Bo Connolly - forget it, Michigan wants him. It's over.

So, depending on how much capital we have to invest at the DL positions, I'm thinking:

Keep after DT Castillo - calls in week 3/4 and 5, perhaps.
Let's get calls in to DT Salcido and DE Feliciano for week 3 - and see how their lists develop

If we could bring own two of those three, we'd be in very nice shape along the DL.

It's no biggie -- I just clicked to "Save As..." in FireFox and then opened the save file. Slight extra step, that's all. No need to change things.

FWIW: We have the screen pass set to 12%, short pass to 50%, 11-20 yard pass to 20%, 21-30 at 8% and long pass at 5%. I think our OC was looking for a ball control passing attack against Ohio - it certainly worked :D

I wanted ball control, no turnovers and to get the ball to our playmakers, which seemed to have worked. I'll wait to see our scouting report on Ohio State before I make any changes. I'm a little weary of throwing the ball downfield with our QB.

With the injury to Dodge do we want to remove the redshirt from Withers?

CraigSca
09-27-2004, 03:27 PM
Hmmm...we're mostly using the FB as a blocker as well as an occasional receiver...unfortunately Withers stinks as a blocker just as much as Sweeney does. I know Withers' pass catching is better, but Sweeney is a converted TE and he did have 2 catches last week. I'm for keeping the redshirt, but I'd like to hear from the backs coach.

To all my defensive coaches...

First off...congrats on the shutout of the Bobcats.

Secondly...do any of the three of you have experience with the 50 defense? I noticed that the Buckeyes run the Double Wing and I am contemplating switching it up for this game. Both of our DE's and OLB's are great at stopping the run so I think we may have a shot at "controlling" their running game a bit...but I am really worried about their two great WR's. So would switching to the 50 really open up their passing game? Even though they only passed it 12 times in their opening game.

First. Go Kenny Spragan. Thank you.

Second, the quick report on our walk on, Jimmy Bush. Aside from being about what you'd expect from a walkon, he's our best academic QB (which ain't saying much, but at a fair aspiration and good intelligence, he won't drag us down). Could have been much worse there.

As far as next week's playbook for my QB...I think he can handle a little more on the longer routes, if Ohio State looks week against the pass. Obviously we played a weak opponent, but a 75% completion rate and no int's is impressive no matter what. If you're wavering on letting him throw downfield a little more, err on the side of aggresiveness. We're gonna have a rough time vs Ohio State anyway, may as well see what this kid can do.

Quick recruiting check...odds are we ain't gonna get Conrad Kramer, as he's visiting Michigan and Miami of Florida. Prolly not worth trying to fight those two off.
I think we've got a very good shot at Nate Fink or Ben Robinson, however.

Wolfpack Dominate First Game
Greg Stelmack, Staff Writer
ATHENS, OH - The NC State Wolfpack won their opening game on the road in convincing fashion with a 45-7 thrashing of Ohio University. Kenny Spragan had a huge day, throwing for 336 yards and 5 TDs. The Wolfpack defense was dominant, holding Ohio to just 7 first downs and 127 yards of total offense.

All was not roses, however. With a 31-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter and a suffocating defense (Ohio's only points came on a long kickoff return), the Wolfpack kept Spragan in the game and continued to throw the ball, with Spragan getting 2 of his TD passes in the final stanza.

"The football gods do not look kindly on teams that run up the score like that." noted Thelonius M. Quarters, popular NFL columnist. "Revenge is likely to be exacted soon upon the Wolfpack. Don't tempt the football gods when your next game is against a powerhouse team from the same state as the one you just abused."

Wolfpack fans were said not to care. "TMQ must be from Carolina" noted one student at the game. "45-7 is running up the score? Who is that nut?" stated another. "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! TOGA TOGA TOGA!" came from a third.

Up next week is national powerhouse Ohio State. Can Spragan repeat his performance against a top-10 team? This will be a real test for the Wolfpack.

Quick update:

Quickly reviewed Ohio State. It looks like we match up fairly well. They have an accurate QB, but he runs more than he throws, and is their leading rusher (through 1 game). They run a Double Wing formation. The O Line isn't very good, but they have loads of talent at the RB position, although they seem to let the QB run. I would focus on the run and make him beat us through the air. He is accurate and has two good receivers to throw to, but ran only 12 pass plays in their first game.

The D Line is pretty weak, so we should be able to take advantage of that, however the ILB's are pretty stout. The secondary is fairly good. I wouldn't open up the deep passing tooooo much.

I'll present a more in depth report this evening.

Buzzbee.

Scouting Report: Ohio State

Offense

With only one week to go on, it's difficult to tell exactly what type of team OSU is. One thing is for sure though. They can run the ball. They have a stable of running backs, four that I'd rate as being very good. However, their biggest running threat may be QB Jim Horton. He was the Buckeyes leading rusher last weak with 142 yards on just 15 attempts for a 9.4 average. They've also got a power running fullback who is also very good. His biggest asset is his ability to always fall forward to gain that extra couple of yards.

Center Brock Selerno is the anchor on a somewhat below average line. However, he is a much better pass blocker than run blocker. The guard position is the definite weakness with some young, undeveloped players. Their best guard IS a senior, but he plays about like a sophomore. They are good at the tackles with their starters, but they lack depth. Look for the line to fade near the end of the game. The offensive line is an area that we should be able to take advantage of.

We can't totally ignore the passing game as they have two excellent receivers in seniors Sean Meadows and James Cochran. With the easy win last week, the Bucks didn't throw much. Expect that to change some this week. These guys are too good to ignore. The Bucks also have some depth with some good 3rd and 4th receivers.

The Buckeyes ran 53 times (5th) last week for 335 yards (2nd) so they are primarily a running team. I don't expect them to reverse course, but they probably ran more than normal because it was a blowout. 35-40 rushes is probably a reasonable expectation. Conversely, they passed only 12 times, completing 8.

Recommendation: Focus on the run first, but don't ignore the pass. OSU has a lot of weapons so a balanced defense is desirable, with a moderate slant toward the run. The offensive line is the weakness, but put too much pressure on QB Horton and he'll simply run right by the rushing defenders.

Defense
Ohio State's defensive line is anchored by defensive end Wayne Randle. He is undersized at 243 lbs, but don't let that fool you. He is very good. {NOTE: Game doesn't specify R or L DE, so I don't know where he lines up. Errr!!!} The big gaping hole for the Buck defense is definitely the middle of the D Line. They are young and inexperienced at DT. Don't be fooled though. The younguns are backed by a rotation of three very good inside linebackers. They are weaker at OLB with a couple of good players and not much else. The secondary is outstanding, with the nickel corner being as good as the Bucks very good starters, and better than most other schools starters. The safeties are just plain ole excellent. Sticking with a west coast style passing game may be a prudent decision.

Recommendation:
The Ohio State defense isn't invincible. They are weak at defensive tackle and this can be exploited to a degree. However, a very bad Cincinnati team was held to -10 yards rushing last weak, so it won't be a walk in the park. The linebackers prevent the long gains. The secondary is formidable, but the same very bad Cincinnati team managed 198 yards passing, so they aren't invincible. Establish the run, focusing on the weak middle. Keep the Buckeye offense off the field with a ball control offense.

The Buckeyes are very good but believe it or not, they are still fairly young. We can hang with the starters, but the OSU depth is superior. Getting an early lead and hanging on will be our best shot. Expect them to have a big 4th quarter as fatigue sets in for our ballclub.

CB Wade Copperfield (Call) We're his only offer at the moment. We just have to hope LSU or Nebraska don't offer.

S Ralph Phillips (Visit & Request visit and offer if he's better than scouted. If he isn't, just forget him)

Sweet guys...I just got back from a all-morning doctor's appt. for my son and I'm heading to the train in about 15 mins. I'll sim and post tonight...

Also, since no one has requested moving up to offensive recruiting coordinator, I'm going to offer it to mckerney, since he was next in line for a spot.

I printed out all the details of the offensive and defensive game plans so I could input the parameters on the train tonight. Unfortunately, my printer refused to print the percentage of passes at the various distances (the printout was truncated). Therefore, though I knew Balldog wished to "open it up", I decided it was best to keep our parameters the same as week 1. Also, my recruiting spreadsheet is on my other PC. I tried to email myself the file so I could add to it, but it didn't come across successfully. Because of this, the recruiting spreadsheet only lists new recruits we contacted this week, as well as recruits who are no longer influenced by additional phone calls/visits. Vexroid, I was able to phone/visit everyone you wanted.

Ohio State (2-0) at North Carolina State (1-0), no TV

In their first two games, #6 Ohio State has defeated their two opponents by a combined score of 82-23. Ohio State currently leads the country in rushing (296.5 ypg) and is #6 in rushing defense (6.5 ypg). In only our 2nd game, we face a top 10 team. How will the Wolfpack fare?

It’s a rainy, 45-degree Saturday here in Raleigh, North Carolina. The referees greet the captains of both teams at midfield. North Carolina State wins the toss and elects to receive. A roar is heard from the 53,400-strong Wolfpack faithful. They’ve been tailgating since 6am this morning, and the crowd has turned raucous as they anxiously await an upset of the vaunted Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes line up on the field for the kickoff, and we are ready. Watson kicks the ball 6 yards deep into the N.C. State end zone, and Kenneth Wertz risks it by attempting a return. He is stopped on the 18 yard line, and that’s where the Wolfpack will begin their first drive.

On first and 10 from the 18, Ohio State comes out in a 50 alignment and the call goes to Orlando Macri. Macri runs off left tackle and is immediately stopped for a 1 yard loss. On 2nd and 11 Spragan attempts his first pass of the day and connects with Kenneth Wertz for an 8 yard gain. This brings up a pivotal 3rd and 3 as the Wolfpack need the momentum at the beginning of the game to even contemplate an upset. A screen is called to Orlando Macri, he bobs and weaves but is only able to get 2 yards and it’ll be 4th and long 1. N.C. State has to be disappointed, but they have to feel they CAN move the football against this team. McCarthy gets the call on the punt, it travels 38 yards and a fair catch is called at the Ohio State 35. 12:37 left in the 1st.

Now, it’s a chance for the Wolfpack to face the #1 running attack in the nation. On 1st and 10 Mercury Schneider runs around the left end through a giant hole. 32 yards later, he’s finally dragged down by OLB Steve Durham. Hmm…this is not a good sign. On the next play Schneider takes it again, but is stopped when Herman Sanderson reads the play – 2 yard gain. 2nd and 8 – same play again, this time Schneider is successful and gains 6 yards, bringing up a huge 3rd and 2 at the N.C. State 25. The FB Omar Hardy gets the call and it’s read perfectly by the linebacking duo of Sanderson and Arnswaldt – 3 yard loss! Note: all 4 plays run by Ohio State have been to the left side. I wonder if MikeVick will be making adjustments?  4th and 5 at the NCSU 28 – does Ohio State go for it, or kick the field goal? They’re going for it! QB Jim Horton fades back and throws to Howard, OLB Steve Durham steps in front to bat the ball away and the ball is turned over on downs! On the sideline, head coach Craigsca is seen congratulating MikeVick on a great defensive stop. 10:08 left in the 1st quarter.

Since Orlando Macri was stopped on the first drive, Balldog puts the call into Gino Linquist to get a carry. Ohio State is blitzing and Linquist rides the block of Newt Lentzner around the left end for a huge gain of 15 yards. The partisan crowd in Raleigh roars as the Wolfpack get their first 1st down of the day. 1st and 10 at the N.C. State 43. Ohio State again blitzes two linebackers, as Spragan attempts the pass to Trent Brodie. This ball falls harmlessly incomplete as it was well-defended by the cornerback. 2nd and 10. No blitz this time, but facing a 2-deep zone, Spragan again passes, this time to Kenneth Wertz. Again, a heads-up play by an Ohio State cornerback defends the pass and brings up a 3rd and 10. Ohio State seems to be blitzing a lot (perhaps suggesting a big play in the future?) and this time they call on a safety blitz. Spragan connects with Trent Brodie, but he’s brought down by the linebacker after a short 3 yard gain. N.C. State will have to punt. 44 yard punt, 3 yard return…Ohio State starts on their own 13, 8:18 left in the 1st.

Ohio State again begins with a run, but they try to get cute this time calling for a trap. The SS OJ Brooks cheats and stops Horton for no gain! 2nd and 10. Horton tries to take it himself on the next play and is dropped for a 2 yard loss by OJ Brooks (again) and Thurman Arnswaldt. 3rd and 12! Horton drops back to pass and Mario Beethoven blast past his block, dropping Horton for the sack! The 6 yard loss on the play brings up a 4th and 18 for Ohio State on their own 5! Looks like good field position for the Wolfpack, barring any mistakes. A horrible 26 yard punt, and a 12 yard return by Kenneth Wertz means N.C. State STARTS on the OSU 19! WILB Neal Hollins is injured on the play, but it doesn’t say it’s serious. Let’s cross our fingers. 6:40 left in the 1st.

Huge, huge, huge series for N.C. State here….a touchdown would be almost a requirement, a FG a minor disappointment. No points would be a disaster. On 1st and 10, Orland Macri gets the ball and finds a small hole for a 5 yard gain. Newt Lentzner knocked the opposing defender flat (2nd good block by Lentzner in the game). 2nd and 5. A handoff to Gino Linquist nets 5 yards and a first down – Kevin Miller gets the KRB. 1st and goal at the 9! Balldog elects to pass on 1st down, and Spragan finds RB Clyde Hickman in the flat for a 3 yard gain. 2nd and goal at the 6. Gino Linquist gets the call again and is stopped for a 1 yard loss after trying to go around the right end. 3rd and goal at the 7. Big call here…what will it be? Not surprisingly, it’s a pass. Spragan fades back and sees his first target is double-covered….he bides a little time by moving in the pocket and then makes his decision – a pass to true freshman backup TE Kevin Gilman. Spragan throws into Gilman’s outstretched hands for the 9 yard TD pass! Allen’s kick is good, and N.C. State has a 7-0 lead over #6 Ohio State with 4:25 left in the 1st quarter!

Allen, charged up by the insanely loud crowd and the early 7-0 lead, boots the ball beyond the end line for a touchback. Ohio State will start their drive on their own 20. Holmes runs the ball on 1st down and is dropped after 2 yards by OLB Steve Durham and Ethan Alexander. 2nd and 8. The FB Omar Hardy runs the ball up the middle and gains 7 yards. 3rd and 1 now, and another big play for the Wolfpack defense. Arnswaldt and Alexander are blitzing, but they’re fooled by a QB sneak by Horton that nets him a large 10 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the OSU 39. Horton tries a pass on first down, but OJ Brooks is there to defend, bringing up 2nd and 10. A trick reverse by OSU nets them 9 yards, and again it’s a 3rd and 1 for the Buckeyes. Holmes runs off left tackle and CB Ralph Spaulding drops him in the backfield for a 3 yard loss! OSU will have to punt! A nice 46 yard punt with no return means N.C. State has their back to the wall at their own 9. The Wolfpack need to string a couple first downs together here, to prevent OSU from receiving great field position… :54 left in the 1st.

Balldog gets cocky and calls for Spragan to pass from his own 9. He spots the TE Jack Mackie and connects for a 7 yard gain. 2nd and 3. Orland Macri carries the ball, but is stopped immediately for a one yard loss. That’s the end of the 1st quarter, N.C. State 7, Ohio State 0.

2nd quarter. 3rd and 4 at the N.C. State 15. Spragan attempts the pass to Mackie again but he’s hurried and forces a bad throw that drops harmlessly to the turf. Need a good punt here…39 yards, no return. Not bad…could be worse. OSU starts on their own 46, 14:46 left in the half.

On first down, we’re caught flat-footed by a surprise deep pattern. 47 yards later, Ohio State has it first and goal at our 7 yard line. Horton takes it himself on the next play and is stopped for no gain by Thurman Arnswaldt. 2nd and goal. Horton tries again on this play and gains 4 yards over the left guard – CJ Schmaltz and Ethan Alexander combine on the stop. 3rd and goal at the Wolfpack 3 – all 53,400 Wolfpack fans are standing and screaming. Horton calls for a pass and throws to Mercury Schneider. Unfortunately for the faithful, he’s open and the Buckeyes have tied it, 7-7. 13:08 left in the half.

The kickoff is 4 yards deep, and Trent Brodie returns it 29 yards to the N.C. State 25. I just noticed, there have been ZERO penalties called so far this game. Go figure. 1st and 10. Spragan throws in the flat to Macri and he bobs and weaves for 6 yards on his own. 2nd and 4 at the 31. Gino Linquist runs off left guard but is stopped after a yard. 3rd and 3. Spragan throws to the flat again, this time finding Gino Linquist. Linquist finds a hole and is finally dropped after a 13 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the 45. Spragan drops back again but he’s picked off for the first turnover on the game – argh! The interception is returned 33 yards down to the N.C. State 20. Ok, MikeVick – time to turn it up. 10:43 left in the half.

1st and 10 at the N.C. State 20. Horton takes it himself for a 7 yard gain on first down. 2nd and 3. Horton tries again, but Herman Sanderson and Ethan Alexander throw off their blocks and stop him after a yard. 3rd and 2 at the 12. Holmes gets the carry and gains 3 after a key block. 1st down Buckeyes at the 9. The QB Horton runs the option, elects to take it himself and is buried for a 4 yard loss by Herman Sanderson. 2nd and goal at the 13. Horton fades back on second down and throws to Hardy for a 12 yard gain. 3rd and goal at the 1 yard line. Big, big play here. Horton takes it himself via the QB sneak and gains the requisite yard – Ohio State touchdown. Ohio State 14, N.C. State 7, 7:32 left in the half.

A kickoff to the 1 is returned 26 yards by Ralph Spaulding to the 27. On first and 10 Orlando Macri follows Lentzner’s block for a 10 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the 37. Oh look – a penalty. Offensive holding on NC State – 1st and 21 – ugh. An underthrown pass by Spragan to Kenneth Wertz makes it 2nd and 21. Macri runs off the right guard, but no one on the Buckeyes is fooled – 2 yard loss. 3rd and 23. Spragan attempts a pass to Kenneth Wertz, but he drops it. Ugh. 4th and 23, send in the punting unit. 42 yard punt and a fair catch. 5:19 left in the half.

1st and 10 for OSU at their own 34. An option play is run by Horton who takes it himself. Herman Sanderson followed him the entire way and drops him for a 3 yard loss. 2nd and 13. Horton runs again (jebus) and is stopped at the line of scrimmage by SS OJ Brooks. 3rd and 13. Horton throws a pass to Cochran, but it’s underthrown – 4th and 13. 42 yard punt, 4 yard return. 3:53 left in the half.

1st and 10 at their own 31 for the Wolfpack. All 53,400 fans are standing, willing this team to make a move offensively. A trap by Orlando Macri nets 4 yards. 2nd and 6. Spragan connects with WR Donald Clark for an 8 yard reception and a first down. 1st and 10 from the 43 – 2:38 left. Spragan fades back again but can’t find anyone…he’s blindsided and sacked for a 6 yard loss (sack allowed by Lentzner). 2nd and 16. Surprisingly, Balldog calls Macri’s name on 2nd and 16 and the RB responds with a 13 yard run (KRB by Bednarsh). 3rd and 3 – 1:31 left. Spragan fades back and throws….intercepted by DE Randle at the OSU 49 and returned 7 yards. 1st and 10 OSU at the NC State 44. 1:21 left in the half.

Mercury Schneider gets the call and is dropped for a 1 yard loss by Herman Sanderson. Schneider has only run the ball 4 times but has 39 yards (32 of it on his first carry). 2nd and 11. Horton throws, but it’s underthrown. 57 seconds left. Horton fades back on 3rd down and is dropped by the NT David Finley for a 6-yard sack! 4th and 17 at their own 49, and for some reason OSU calls time out. 33 yard punt, 2 yard return.

1st and 10 at the NCSU 20, 42 seconds in the half. Macri runs off left guard – no gain. Macri runs again….1 yard gain, and that’s the half. Ohio State 14, N.C. State 7.

N.C. State’s Allen kicks off to the OSU 5 yard line, returned by Meadows for 20 yards to their own 25. 1st and 10. Holmes carries the ball on first down and gains 3 yards after being dropped by Sanderson and Westbrook. 2nd and 7. Mercury Schneider runs forward and is stopped for no gain by Flynn and Sanderson. CJ Schmaltz drove through his block to dissolve the play. 3rd and 7. The Wolfpack crowd begins to awaken….surprisingly, Schneider runs the ball on 3rd down and is stopped cold after a single yard by NT David Finley. 4th and 6! 37 yard punt, 7 yard return, ball on the NC State 41 yard line. 12:33 left in the 3rd quarter.

Spragan throws a screen to Orlando Macri but he’s taken down behind the line for a 2 yard loss. 2nd and 12 at the 39. Illegal motion on NC State, still no penalties against OSU (favoritism, favoritism! ). 2nd and 17. Gino Linquist runs the ball but is stopped for 0 yards. 3rd and 17. Spragan’s pass to Hickman is incomplete – Ohio State’s Crawford defends the pass. Time for us to punt…23 yard punt (ugh), no return. Ohio State will start on their 43, 11:08 left in the 3rd.

Schneider runs the ball and moves the pack forward for a 5 yard run. 2nd and 5. Horton runs a counterplay and finds a big hole – 15 yard gain. 1st and 10 at our 37. Uh oh…our defense is looking tired. 1st and 10 at the NCSU 24. Horton takes it, but is dropped for a 1 yard loss by Ethan Alexander and Sherman Sanderson. Holmes gets the call and gains 3 – Sanderson gets yet another tackle. 3rd and 8 at our 22. Horton throws a screen and finds Floyd open…he moves through the crowd and is stopped after a 9 yard gain. First down at the 13 – ugh. A run around left end by Horton gains 5. 2nd and 5 at the 8. False start by OSU – hallelujah! 2nd and 10. Because of the penalty, Horton attempts a pass and is nailed by Finley and Schmaltz for a sack and a loss of 7 yards. 3rd and 17 at the 20. Horton fades back but can’t find anyone so he zigs and zags for a 6 yard gain on the scramble. 4th and 11 at our 14 – field goal time. I agree, Vex. Our defense really shut down their offense. Looking back, I really wish I had changed the pass length percentages. Maybe, just maybe we would have been able to change the game somewhere if we had opened it up just a little. Right before sim time, I took a long at Spragan's interception rating to see if I would make an adjustment. After looking at it, I had very little faith in his ability so thought it best to just stay with the same ball control type passing attack. Even playing it conservative, he still threw 3 interceptions :(.

'grats to Quik for David Finley - he and Sanderson were both monsters out there today.

VTech is another Wing-T type football team (it's basically the Stanley Northern show) and I feel confident that our defense can stop them. Will our offense be able to do anything? VTech shut down two very mediocre teams in W. Michigan and Duke. It's our first ACC game - so it's a very big game.

I really do enjoy holding a guy for 27 yards rushing on 32 carries...even though it was in defeat. If only we could have made just one play on offense or defense to give us a little momentum. That could have easily made this into a different game.

Herman Sanderson's my guy by the way.

As of now, it seems that our top recruit along the DL is west-coaster Marty McWilliams. He rates an 87 "fit" and after two calls, we are atop the list of pursuing schools in terms of prestige. If we get a shot at a CA recruiting trip, it would be great to see him -- but I'm hoping our calls and invite might be enough.

It looks like we are also in the lead for DT Casey Batista. Air Force leads us in academics, but they have yet to make him an offer. We have a shot there.

We are definitely in with the big guns for monster DE Chris Ansell - with several top teams after him now. Too bad... at some point, we probably need to decide collectively on a strategy with a "top target" like him. I don't think we can make a half-hearted play for top-tier recruits -- the only way we land someone like him is with a full court press. We probably need to decide as a group at the outset of next year's recruiting season if there are specific standout talents who look worthy of that kind of pursuit (no matter who we're up against). Knowing the cost (fewer resources for the marginal guys we are now re-setting our sights on) up front might make it easier to say "we want to get that WR from Asheville no matter what -- go in guns ablazin'."

Possible new DL targets:

DT Terrell Morris (DC) - no offers yet, we might take the lead with this smart run stopper
DE JJ Heath (NJ) - no offers yet, he's a nice run stopper
DE CJ Gray (ME) - no offers yet - solid pass rusher, but idolizes BC
DE Dixon Stonge (PA) - no offers yet, could switch to DT and help stop the run
DT Gino Powell -- only visiting Central Fla - we might sneak in there?

Assuming we have a little flexibility in pursuing additional players at this point, that list is in priority order. DT Morris is a guy we *must* pursue. Please.

On the recruiting front, I'm concerned that G Mack Moorthy has decided to visit Virginia. They have a much better academic program than we do, but we're a lot closer to home. I've been pretty much banking on Moorthy and Shane Sanderson (no visit as of yet) coming to Raleigh. If they don't, we're up a creek...

Mckerney turned down the offer for offensive recruiting coordinator (due to free-time issues) so I've offered the position to the next person in line.

Check out Duke's recruiting in-state. That's an awful lot of Top 1000 recruits for a program like that. Looks like we may have to deal with them eventually.

BTW - I agree that we need to strategize our recruiting next year. We should pick 1-2 really high prospects that we refuse to give up on, but then also concentrate in-state the first few weeks. After we've exhausted those options, maybe then look outside the area for the overlooked recruits who would add value to the team.

Just in case we sim the game on Thursday...here's the defensive gameplan.

Coach CraigSca and current LB coach (I lose track with all of our changes). I moved WOLB Thurman Arnswaldt to WILB due to the injury to Hollins. I thought he is a better candidate to move inside because of his run stopping ability. Lorenzo Roberts should get the nod at WOLB because of his decent pass rushing skill.

If either of you have a different idea let me know.

Their skill players don't scare me at all...but they have a great QB and a great O-Line and that combined with playing at home worries me a little.

VA Tech leads, 7-0 at the end of 1. They scored on a 11 play, 47 yard drive. We had to punt from our own 9 due to an unnecessary roughness call against us. We were held to 21 yards total offense in the 1st, with only one first down. VA Tech ran for 48 and passed for 30.

I would be fine with sticking with my role as D Coordinator and leave the recruiting to someone else. At least for this year since I've barely looked at who we've gone after. I think we basically agreed on a defensive recruiting philosophy and have recruited accordingly so far.

Vex, I'm more than happy to give you some input on what my needs would be, but I wouldn't have the time to both do OC and recruit for the offense.

Let me know what you all think.

I am gonna have to bow out of this, I'm afraid. With CTBB starting up in full swing (and the fact that my copy of TCY is busted), I'm doubting I'm gonna have the proper time to aid in Ze GroupThink.

I'm going to have to back out as well, school is seriously kicking my ass right now. I've had to burn up almost all my vacation days just so I could get my studying and homework done in the minimal time I do have. This sucks, because I really wanted to be a part of this...I will for sure read from work though :)

Hi, i'm sorry but with the FOFC downtime i lost a bit the excitment about this and now i'm on full with the online leagues i joined and TPB2k5. Also FM will be here soon so i'll have even less time for the Group think so if somebody wants to get my job i'll resign. I'm sorry again guys :(

I'm still interested, but am not looking for a broader role than just managing one position.

If you needed me to switch to someplace besides DL, that would be fine... but I'm not looking to get involved in gameplanning and so forth.

Raven, I was taking a look at the WF roster, and nothing about them impresses me. Their defensive line and inside linebacking corps are especially dismal, so I would suggest we try pounding the ball up the middle. They also only have one halfway decent cornerback in their secondary, so we may want to go long occasionally against them.

Overall, we have much more talent than them, so I think if we play it conservative and unleash Sanderson and Arnswaldt on them, we should be ok.

Wake Forest (2-2) at North Carolina State (1-2), -4

42 degrees, stormy

We win the toss and elect to receive. Wertz returns the ball 38 yards to our own 36. They're running an 8-man front against us this afternoon. First play is an illegal shift penalty on us, pushing us back 5 yards.

Spragan throws an incompletion, Macri loses 6 yards on a sweep, and a 10 yard completion to Clark gives us a 3 and out. 24 yard punt gives WF good field position at their own 41.

Unfortunately, they seem to be able to pass on us early on, getting completions of 16, 17 and 22 yards. 1st and 25 at our 27, due to an unsportmanlike conduct call against Wake. We finally hold them at our 11, forcing a FG attempt. On the first attempt, we make a bonehead play and run into the kicker - fortunately it's not enough for the first down. They try again, and it's good - Wake 3, N.C. State 0. We've held them to -8 yard rushing (no sacks, either), but they've passed for 71. Ugh.

We respond with an 11 play, 80 yard drive on our next series! Completed passes to Wertz (2) and Brodie, along with a few runs by Macri and Linquist is capped with a 19 yard pass from Spragan to Mackie for the TD. Extra point is good, N.C. State 7, WF 3 - 1:55 left in the 1st.

End of the 1st: N.C. State 7, Wake Forest 3

CraigSca

We stop their drive at our 48. WF's Emmons produces a PERFECT coffin corner punt, rolling out of bounds at our own 1 yard line, where we will begin our next drive.

Fortunately, on the first play Macri goes off tackle and bursts for 10 yards (KRB by Bednarsh). After a 17 yard completion to Clark, Macri gets the call again and runs around the right end for 20 yards (6 carries, 25 yards for Macri thus far). 1st and 10 at our 45. The drive is ultimately stopped at the WF 26 yard line, bringing up a 43 yd FG attempt. Allen missed wide left :(. 7:33 left in the half.

Our defense is beginning to pick up steam forcing a 3 and out after Schmaltz hurries Berkebile into a bad throw on 3rd and 3. Berkebile is 7 for 10 for 81 yards so far, and we've held them to 2 yards rushing (and thus 83 yds total offense). A horrible 23 yard punt gives us the ball at our own 44. 5:55 left.

On a first and 10 play at the WF 40, Spragan fades back and his pass is blocked at the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately, the WF defender's blocked pass may have caught Spragan as well, and he goes down with a SERIOUS injury  . 4:01 left in the half.

Amaya comes in as our new quarterback. After a 4 yard gain by Orlando Macri, Amaya fades back for the first time. Throwing away from double coverage, he find Mackie in the flat - Mackie zigs and zags forward to gain 15 yards after the catch for the 14 yard gain! 1st and 10 at the WF 22. The drive stalls there, bringing up a 40 yard FG attempt. The kick is good! N.C. State 10, Wake Forest 3 - 1:58 left in the half.

Halftime: N.C. State 10, Wake Forest 3

Stats:

First Downs: Wake Forest 5, N.C. State 11
Rushing: Wake Forest 11, N.C. State 54
Passing: Wake Forest 81, N.C. State 136

I have a feeling we're going to be relying on Macri and the defense a lot in the 2nd half.

Ack, I was about to get the recruiting. Thanks for getting it though.

CraigSca

Wake Forest gets the ball in the 2nd half, and Allen kicks it through the end zone. Arnswaldt is the man, stopping the WF rushing attack on the first play for a loss of 4 yards, and then on 3rd and 9 making the tackle after a gain of 2, bringing up 4th and 11. Another bad punt gives us the ball at the WF 42.

On a 4th and long from the WF 29, we attempt a pass and Amaya gets nailed on the sack. Now he's injured, though this one doesn't look serious. This game is getting ugly :(. 10:37 left in the 3rd.

WF moves the ball on us (a typical series consists of 2 rushes for little gain, and a big pass play on 3rd down). Uncustomarily, on 4th and 9, they RUN the ball from our 31 and Montgomery comes up with the big tackle and a 3 yard loss. Ball turned over on downs, 6:48 left in the 3rd.

3 and out for us, as Amaya is sacked again on 3rd down. 5:16 left in the 3rd.

We force a 3 and out after Schmaltz picks up the first N.C. State sack of the day (and thus lowers WF's rushing total to 3 yards on the day). 3:31 left.

After hand-offs to Macri nets us a first down, our OC goes nuts and has Amaya throw deep. Somehow, he finds Clark open for 33 yards, and Clark gets 13 more on his own for a 46 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the WF 17. One play later, Amaya finds Carter again for the 17 yard TD! 4 plays and 84 yards (go figure). N.C. State 17, Wake Forest 3 - 1:40 left in the 3rd.

Another 3 and out for WF, ending the 3rd.

End of 3 quarters: N.C. State 17, Wake Forest 3

CraigSca
11-08-2004, 09:32 AM
We begin the 4th and the WF 44 after yet another poor punt. Let's see if we can milk the clock. To heck with that - Amaya completes one for 12 yards and then throws our first pick of the day. WF has the ball at their own 11.

No matter. An incomplete pass and then a sack by Beethoven brings up 3rd and 15 at the WF 6. A 14 yard completion on 3rd down is stopped just short by Monthomery, and WF will have to punt.

Our ball at our own 47 - 13:02 left. 9 plays and 53 yards later, Amaya connects with Wertz on the 11 yard TD. N.C. State 24, Wake Forest 3, 8:56 left.

A bomb is thrown by Berkebile on the next play and he throws directly into our 4-deep zone. Flynn comes up with the interception at our own 40. 8:45 left - I think it's time to call off the dogs.

Or not...Amaya connects with Macri for a 12 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the WF 48. Now it's the Macri and Linquist show...and they can't be stopped. 2 consecutive first downs now, all via the run. 1st and 10 at the 27. The drive is stopped at the 12...and Allen connects on the 29 yard FG. 11 plays, 48 yards, 6:33 taken off the clock. N.C. State 27, Wake Forest 3 - 2:12 left to play.

Ugh...this gets worse for Demon Deacon fans - 3 plays later Berkebile runs a draw and coughs up the football (knocked loose by Flynn). Beethoven recovers and returns it 5 yards to the WF 15 yard line - 1:43 left.

That's the way the game ends - N.C. State 27, Wake Forest 3

We held them to 0 yards rushing and 130 yards total offense! We picked up 406 yards of offense and 25 first downs. Our defense was awesome after that first drive.

CraigSca...any injuries I should know about since I'm at work at the moment?? Let me know and then I'll post the gameplan this morning.

Craig - Here are some last minute Defensive gameplanning changes since I noticed that the Heels were a Single Back offense. Change the Nickel and Dime Package percentages to 75 each. And then with the Run Expectations...change them to whatever the Scout recommends. Everything else should be fine where it is.

I really have no clue, but would that be too much multiple blitzing with them passing a lot? I'm just worried that we will leave a lot of guys open. Or are they really prone to giving up sacks?

CraigSca
11-12-2004, 10:49 AM
I'll be running this in about 15 mins. At this point, I'm going to keep that biltzes as MikeVick has them, unless he asks for a change. I have confidence that out defense will come up big against these guys - unless I'm proven to be wrong - ha!

Recruits who's future calls will add no value:

DB - Fleming, Rasmussen
G - Moorthy, Sanderson
T - Blackwell

New Recruits:

OLB Higbee - BTSed, so scholarship offered
QB Carrigan - mildly pleased by call, at least one school he'd pick over us (most likely UVA)
WR Tarkenton - a little surprised by call, at least one school he'd pick over us

BTW, Vex, I think your formatting is great. Very easy to read and move through the recruiting phase.

Only green recruit listed I couldn't phone/visit was DB Copperfield.

Regarding the last minuted defensive changes - the scout wanted even more nickel and dime packages, as well as suggested upping the blitzing. As requested, I used the run expectations of the scout and changed the rest of the stuff back.

On to the game!

North Carolina State (2-2) (-2) at North Carolina (2-3), No TV

Attendance: 26,300
Weather: 77 degrees, fair

We win the toss and elect to receive. Kick is returned 20 yards to our own 19. Everyone get ready for the Orlando Macri show - he will get the ball early and often.

Amaya runs a draw for 2, Macri gains 4, and then Amaya connects on 11 yard pass play to Clark. 1st down! Macri gets 3 on first down, and then Amaya gets sacked on second. Hmm...a 3rd and 14 pass is blocked at the line. North Carolina will get the ball. Tar Heel ball at their own 31.

Oddly, they run on their first two plays (gains of 2 and 3 yards). Offensive holding on third down (and a serious injury to #24 Hughes of UNC) brings up 3rd and 14. Arnswaldt is coming on the blitz, and it disrupts their timing - illegal motion - 3rd and 19. Incomplete pass - deflected by Spaulding. 4th and 19 and we get the ball back - 9:36 left in the 1st.

N.C. State ball on their own 43. Linquist gets 6 on the right side, and then we get pass happy again. Sweeney gets barreled over and it forces Amaya to hurry and incompletion. On 3rd down, #79 Huntley forces Amaya into another hurried incomplete pass - he's now 1 for 4 for 11 yards. Macri is injured on the play - ugh - but it doesn't appear to be serious. What happened to that ball control rushing attack?!

UNC starts at their own 5 because of their 3rd penalty of the day (illegal block). Jolly runs for 18 on 1st down - yuck. Two plays later, Schmaltz and Davis combine for the sack - 3rd and 16. Flynn defends the 3rd down pass - 4th and 16 - 6:21 left. N.C. State starts on the UNC 48 - we're winning the battle of field position, though the total offenses of both teams have combined for a mere 36 yards (19 of which is ours).

Macri is back in the game and carries for 3. Again on 2nd down Amaya passes and this time gets lucky - complete to Clark for a 27 yard gain. Ball on the 18. On 3rd down, Amaya passes again and finds Clark open for 15 down to the 1. 1st and goal. Macri loses 2, but Linquist barrels in for the 3 yard TD run. N.C. State 7, UNC 0 - 2:18 left in the 1st.

UNC comes out passing - but it's futile as Schmaltz forces an inc via a hurry, and Branch blocks another pass at the line. We get the bal back via the punt at our 11. 1:04 left.

Amaya AGAIN passes - this time on first down - and it proves costly - intercepted and run back 17 yards for the easy score. UGHHHH! N.C. State 7, UNC 7 - 54 secs left.

Amaya ends the quarter with yet another pass - a 22 yard completion to Brodie. 1st and 10 at the UNC 48.

2nd Quarter action...

N.C. State ball on the UNC 48. Macri breaks one for 15 yards after a great block by Lentzner - he now has 25 yards on 7 carries. Amaya again throws (despite my pleadings from the sideline) and connects to Clark (again!) for 18 yards. 1st and 10 at the UNC 15. We finally focus on running the ball, and 4 plays later Linquist scores his 2nd TD of the day, via a 3 yard TD run. 7 plays, 70 yards, 3:40 off the clock. N.C. State 14, UNC 7 - 12:14 left in the half.

Another 3 and out for UNC - they mustered only 28 yards of offense.

On 3rd and 10 from our own 24 - Amaya finds his favorite receiver again for 18 yards. We then methodically drive down the field. Our rushing attack is finding the holes, and Amaya continually connects with Carter. The drive ends when Orland Macri breaks off the right guard for a 12 yard TD run, giving us a 21-7 lead. 8 plays, 76 yards, 3:31 off the clock. 6:13 left in the half.

UNC finally begins to move the ball against us, and they pick up 3 first downs on the next drive. They stall at our 18, and a 45 yard FG attempt falls short of the crossbar. 1:41 left in the half.

Our drive goes nowhere, and neither does their's. We've held their quarterback, Babbitt to 4 completions in 16 attempts in the first half.

Halftime Score: N.C. State 21, North Carolina 7

First Downs: N.C. State 14, UNC 5
Rushing: N.C. State 73, UNC 46
Passing: N.C. State 146, UNC 39

On to the 2nd half, where UNC begins at their own 27.

3 and out for UNC, and we get the ball back at our own 19.

For whatever reason, Amaya begins the half thinking he's Warren Moon. Mackie drops his first attempt, but Wertz catches the second for 11 yards. Finally, Amaya goes deep  to Clark who somehow comes down with the ball for a 55 yard reception. Go figure. I really want to see Clark's stats - he is having a monster game! 1st and 10 at the UNC 15. Touchdown! Amaya connects with Gino Linquist for the 15 yard pass. 4 plays, 81 yards - 1:43 off the clock. N.C. State 28, UNC 7 - 12:10 left in the 3rd.

3 and out for UNC. Babbitt is now 5 for 22. Good grief.

Our ball at our 41. 9 plays and 56 yards later our drive stalls at the 3 yard line. Allen connects on the 20 yard FG - N.C. State 31, North Carolina 7. Amaya continues his John Elway impersonation with 260 yards passing thus far.

The next drive begins with sacks by Schmaltz and Arnswaldt. We are teeing off now! Of course I say that and Babbitt throws a 92 yard TD pass on the very next play  . Son of a.... The 2 point conversion fails, and we continue to lead 31-13. 4:18 left in the 3rd.

The quarter ends with 3 and outs by both football teams. On the last play of the quarter, Amaya finds Clark open deep for a 30 yard completion. Whatever. 1st and 10 at the N.C. State 42.

4th quarter...

8 plays and 93 yards, Linquist scores his 3rd TD of the day on a 25 yard TD run. N.C. State 38, UNC 13 - 11:20 left in the game.

Call off the dogs...Macri ambles 65 yards on a trap for a TD on our next drive. Lentzner gets the KRB on this one. N.C. State 45, UNC 13 - 6:03 left. Macri has over 160 yards rushing and Linquist has over 80 yards.

We have the ball back with 1:47 left after stopping UNC yet again. We have 6 sacks for 40 yards on the day.

Linquist carries the ball 3 times (17 carries for 90 yards) but fails to come up with the first down. 6 secs left for UNC. Game over.

Get this - 250 yards rushing and 295 yards passing for us today - 545 total yards?!

Final Score: North Carolina State 45, North Carolina 13

The 55 yard bomb was a bomb...a number of the others were 10 yard passes that Donald tacked on a number of yards. If you look at his season stats - he has 583 yards on 28 catches. 197 of those yards are after the catch - about 8 per catch.

Every pass today, however, he seemed to be tacking on 10+ yards.

CraigSca
11-12-2004, 12:28 PM
Hmm..looking at his stats today...he only had 48 YAC of his 218 yards receiving. I know the one 55 yarder was a bomb that he had 0 yards tacked on. The rest would therefore average to approx. 160 yards on 9 catches - 48 YAC means about 112 yards via the air...divide by 9 - thats ~ 13 yards per pass play via the air without the one long pass.

TCY did follow the gameplan...I just freaked whenever I saw him pass. Overall we had 43 runs to 23 passes. Pretty much the ratio we asked for.

EDIT: New files are available via my sig.
I'm still getting the old files.

Ugh, try now - I just noticed the file didn't go to my TCY directory so I moved it.

Offensive Recruiting Strategy - Week 8

Current Recruits

QB

None

RB

Mario Burgess RB (64+) - None (I don't think his interest is genuine)

FB

Perry Hughes FB (74) - Phone (He's from Virginia, he strongly wants to stay close to home, and he's visiting us and Colorado St. I'd say we have the lead.)

TE

***Committed - Corey Adams TE (74) (Lake Waccamaw(E. Columbus), N.C.)

WR

Gino Tarkenton WR (71) - Phone (He's visiting, but it's too bad we didn't get in on him earlier)

Center

None

OG

Mack Moorthy G (72-) - None (He's visiting, he favors distance(We're 7 miles away), and he has a HS teammate on our roster. I'd say he's in the bag)

Shane Sanderson G (67-) - None (He's visiting and I believe we'll get a commitment in a week or two)

OT

***Committed - Bo Blackwell T (76+) (Lumberton, N.C.)

Bruce Middleton T (85++) - None (We don't really have to have another OT, so we're going to slowplay Middleton)

New Recruits

Ty Chavez QB (62) - Visit, then Req. Visit, and Offer

Orlando Force C (78) - Visit, then Req. Visit, and Offer

J.T. Torres G (78) - Visit, then Req. Visit, and Offer

Defensive Recruiting Strategy - Week 8

Current Recruits

DE

J.J. Heath DE (63++) - Phone (He's set up all 5 visits and I like our chances)

Richard Feliciano DE (89+) - Phone (With him visiting, we'll take a run at him)

DT

Casey Batista DT (68++) - Phone (I was really wanting Batista, but BC is going to make things tough)

Terrell Morris DT (57++) - Phone (He's only visiting us, I see a commit this week)

Marty McWilliams DT (72) - None (Not going to try too hard here, hopefully we get his last visit though)

Leonard Compton DT (70-) - None (He doesn't seem as interested in Indiana as I thought he would)

ILB

J.B. Stephenson ILB (60+) - Visit (He has all five visits set and this will be a close one)

OLB
David Palma OLB (53+) - Phone (As long as BC doesn't get into the mix, he's ours IMO)

Arnie Higbee OLB (65++) - Phone (He's visiting W. Virginia and not us, def. not a good sign)

Clarence Anthony OLB (74+) - None (He may be visiting, but it's nothing more than a courtesy visit)

CB

Wade Copperfield CB (72+) - Phone (We're fighting the SC schools here)

Edward Fleming CB (64+) - None (Yikes, the powerhouse academic schools enterd the mix)

Lawrence Rasmussen CB (69+) - None (I think we'll grab this guy from Bob Stoops' hometown)

Safety
Jim Winters S (64+) - Phone (*sigh* Not looking good here, think I'll have to find another safety target)

New Recruits

Gino Powell DT (67) - Visit, Req. Visit, and Offer

Rod Rice OLB (91) - Visit, Req. Visit, and Offer

Kendall Reese S (94) - Visit, Req. Visit, and Offer

Ty Chavez QB

Orlando Force C

J.T. Torres G

J.B. Stephenson ILB

Gino Powell DT

Rod Rice OLB

Kendall Reese S

I don't figure color coding serves any purpose now since I'm doing both the offense and defense. I also added the player ratings for each player.

Just some notes on Maryland:

They have a very balanced offense (373.3 ypg) led by the #2 rusher in the country, Omar Keeton (121 carries, 717 yards, 10 TDs) - the team averages 5.6 yard per carry. This will be a true-test for our rushing defense. Defensively, they can be run on a little, and they can definitely be passed on (9th in the ACC in passing defense and 10th in the ACC with only 11 sacks). Do we see more Amaya to Clark in the future?

Maryland's best players according to our scout:

CB Matthew Bays - 99
RB Omar Keeton - 89 - unfortunately, only a junior
DT Nathan Skae - 85
TE Arnold Ahantou - 84
FB West Hastings - 83
OLB Quinn Biccum - 80

Interestingly for us, Donald Clark leads the ACC in receiving after his two monster games. All-everything Herman Sanderson leads the ACC in tackles (45) and TFLs (16). Arnswaldt is 6th in tackles with 33.

Moved more running to right center and right end. Most likely they'll play their stud DT at RDT and stud DE at RDE, so we want to run the other way. :)
