Anyone download this yet? The 'official' release is supposedly due out any day, but you can get the RC2 and use it now.

Nothing visually enhanced, but alot of security features added.

I have been using Release Candidate 2 for a few weeks now and it seems stable. I have had no compatibility problems.

Thats the final official release. Should hit Windows update tonight, if it hasn't already.

Should be a fun couple weeks at work :).

Only if he's using a key that isn't blacklisted, which he probably isn't. It is possible to change keys post install though...

Yeah so it's just like with SP1, good to know when I go out and work on clients computers.

And, at least with Release Candidate 2, some keys let you install SP2, but not run Windows Update.

If you have access to MSDN, the ISO has been available since yesterday.

You can use that one. It's basically the same as the one that will go up on Windows Update. The only difference is that one contains all the files that changed and if you use Windows Update it will only download the files you need. They recompiled huge amounts of code for security updates so either way I imagine its going to be a huge download.

Yeah i got that from my MSDN earlier, damn site was getting hammered all day. That ISO also contains some support files and other minor goodies I'm assuming don't come with the Windows Update version. It's different than a typical network install package, hence the extra 200 meg.

So even though it says not to DL for one computer, it's not going to hurt my PC if I install it?

jeff061

Nah, it's just larger and not as pretty. Its microsoft's way of saying "This package isn't stupid proof.". But it's still just a single executable you run.

Great. Downloading now. Not as pretty, meaning, not as fancy install mechanism as if you download from Windows Update? So long as it's all there I don't care. Do I get anything useful in the bigger DL?

jeff061

Yeah, just not as streamlined as windows update. As for size, you just get to download a whole bunch of stuff you don't need, if you go through windows update it downloads a small installer, then only downloads the components you need. This way you get the whole shebang, hence the network install name. Its a copy you can throw on the network and it will work for every system.

Dola

Keep in mind SP2 will enable Windows firewall, which may break some things. If you need to you can turn it off in the control panel.

How will I uninstall components I won't need?

Already use Norton PF, as part of the $5.95/month package from Earthlink.

It won't install them for you. It will only install what you need.

OK installed. Now, I already have Norton's Firewall installed. Should I get rid of that or go with Microsoft's. I do like how Microsoft's works, but I'm also keen on Norton's too. Any suggestions here? It advises not to run both at once.

Also, it says Norton AV is installed, but can't check status of it. Any virus checkers that may work better with Microsoft? Didn't they just buy a antivirus company?

Seems like MS is going against the grain, by putting their own security programs into the bundle.

Not really sure yet. Only reason I'd recommend sticking with Norton is because I'm sure the hackers of the world are going to be focused on bypassing Microsoft's security. Other than that, i don't know the differences. I believe Norton, Mcafee Anti Virus as well as others all work with the new AV things SP2 has.

I'm sure the fact it can't read Norton's status will be updated in a later patch.

Fror the corporate edition of Norton/Symantec antivirus Symantec released an update to 9.01 to correct the issue. I'm not sure what they're planning for the home edition since I have no experience at all with it. Its not a Microsoft thing its up to the AV vendors to impliment support for the security center.
