BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A judge set bond at $250,000 on Monday for a Stratford woman accused of having a sexual relationship with an 8-year-old boy.

Tammy Imre, 29, of Stratford is accused of first-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Imre was shackled for the brief court appearance, and did not say anything.

The divorced mother of a 7-year-old girl, is accused of assaulting her daughter's playmate.

An investigation began in September, after the boy's mother discovered a letter Imre had written her son, police said.

In the letter, police said Imre told the boy that she doesn't "want anyone but you. Now tomorrow it's supposed to rain, you can come over we can (you know what)."

When confronted, police said Imre acknowledged to having sexual relations with the boy. Imre told investigators she considers the 8-year-old youngster her boyfriend and that she plans to marry him someday, police said.

If convicted, Imre could serve more than 20 years in prison.

Step 5) Tap the Shit out of your 15 minutes. Write book, pose for Playboy, maybe get a cameo in a SNL movie. Basically get Survivor-like fame for about 6 -12 months.
Step 6) Work all that into some kind of long term monica lewinsky-type industry.

Risks: sullied reputation. People will still think you did it. Probably never teach again.

13-Year Old Charged With Abducting Exotic Dancer

A 13-year old Virginia Beach boy is being held at the Virginia Beach Detention Center after police say he abducted an exotic dancer last Tuesday night.

According to officials, the dancer showed up at a pre-arranged appointment at a residence - subsequently discovered to be vacant - in the 700 block of South Rosemont Road around 6:30pm.

The woman noticed the client was a juvenile, but was told that the contract was for his older brother. Police say the woman waited for a while, but no one else showed up.

Authorities say when the woman eventually tried to leave the residence, she was stopped by the juvenile who pointed a shotgun at her and ordered her to dance.

The dancer diverted the boy's attention and tried to dial 911 on her cell phone. According to police, the juvenile then grabbed the phone. During the struggle, the woman bit the boy's hand and was able to break free and run to her car.

Police say their investigation identified the suspect, and also led them to believe that another juvenile was involved in the plan to abduct the dancer. Investigators are working on identifying the second suspect.

The initial 13-year old suspect was arrested Thursday. He is charged with abduction by force, conspiracy, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, brandishing a firearm, and transporting and possessing an assault firearm at age 13.

Police release FL teacher-sex phone tapes

Police released audio tapes Thursday of phone calls between a teacher and a 14-year-old student she is accused of raping.

In the calls, Debra LaFave speaks with the boy about the affair they were allegedly having and the student expresses concerns that the middle school teacher might be pregnant. Police were also releasing DNA evidence as part of the public record of the case.'

LaFave, speaking in a childish voice, asks the boy, "Are you OK?" The victim says, "I'm a little worried." Most of the victim's portion of the tape is inaudible, but a discussion about condom use follows.

Toward the end, LaFave tells the student, "I don't want you lying to your mom" and then asks him to make a "pinky promise." LaFave repeats her request and the boy agrees and after being asked, says, "Pinky promise."

Mike Sinacor, the prosecutor in the case, told FOX News that the calls — said to be made by the boy at the request of authorities probing the allegations — could be useful in determining LaFave's state of mind. LaFave is expected to use the insanity defense when the case goes to trial in April.

Her attorney said that two doctors have evaluated the 24-year-old over the past several months and have also examined medical records.

Attorney John Fitzgibbons said she had some "profound emotional issues that are not her fault."

LaFave was arrested in June on charges of committing lewd or lascivious battery on a person younger than 16. She faces similar charges in Marion County.

LaFave has been suspended from her teaching job and her husband filed for divorce in August.

December 3, 2004 -- The seductive Florida schoolteacher who allegedly stole the innocence of a 14-year-old male student had a sexy part-time job - as a motorcycle-straddling bikini model.

Enticing educator Debra Lafave, 24, graced several pages of a 1999 issue of Models & Makes Magazine, where she was seen mounting a bike in little more than her birthday suit and posing suggestively in fishnet stockings.

The pics steamed up the Internet yesterday, just as officials prosecuting the sex case against her released hundreds of discovery documents. They include transcripts of police surveillance tapes and the written statement of the 14-year-old boy Lafave allegedly seduced.

According to police and the charging document, the Temple Terrace, Fla., middle-school student got to know Lafave after a young friend told him that there was a "hot teacher" who liked him.

The pair eventually hooked up and had sex several times in June, in a portable classroom and in the back of her SUV while his older cousin drove, according to officials.

In his statement - which is written in the childish scrawl of a young teen - the victim revealed how he became entangled in an affair with the comely teacher.

"She told me that she had feeling for me," he wrote. "She told me that she was thinking about me a lot and had feeling for me [and] she didn't know what to do with them.

"We did not have sex until Monday June 14," he added. "On Monday she asked me to help her clean out her portable [classroom at the school]. We had sex for he first time."

One charging document released yesterday described their first encounter. It said Lafave approached the boy as he sat on a couch that decorated her portable classroom.

Wearing terry-cloth pants and thong panties, the married Lafave allegedly sidled up next to him and asked him if he wanted to have sex. The 14-year-old told her that he did.

But that was only the beginning of the seduction.

"While he was sitting on the couch, she straddled him, facing and asked him if he was sure," said the document, produced by the Marion County, Fla., Sheriff's Department.

"He said yes."

After that, the pair had subsequent relations, and the teen believed that Lafave had real feelings for him.

She drove him to basketball games and even gave him a keepsake key chain that had a pewter butterfly pendant similar to her belly-button ring. It was inscribed with the word "Hope" on the back.

The pair's final liaison came on June 17, when the boy and Lafave allegedly drove halfway across the state to Ocala, Fla., where they picked up the student's 15-year-old cousin.

"My cousin drove us around again and again we had sex," he wrote. The sex was in the back of the suspect's SUV, authorities said.

The abbreviated affair ended when the boy's aunt spotted him in Ocala and told his mother.

When his mother asked him what he was doing so far from home, he revealed the whole sordid story, according to a police report released yesterday.

Police later recorded the teen talking to the teacher over the phone. In one, the boy told her that he was worried because he had not used a condom during their alleged encounters.

"Like, I don't want you to, like, get pregnant or anything," he said, according to the transcript. "I was just thinking about it, and I was just thinking if next time, now that we've had sex about three times, if I should use, like, a condom or something?"

The accused pedophile pedagogue dismissed the boy's condom concerns, saying, "Oh, you're being weird."

Lafave has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her lawyer told a Tampa court on Tuesday that he plans to use in insanity defense.

TAMPA - Debra Lafave's plans to use an insanity defense against charges that she had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student caught a lot of people off-guard, but perhaps none more so than her soon-to-be ex-husband.

Action News reporter Sarina Fazan sat down with Owen Lafave to watch footage of Debra's first court appearance in months, and it didn't take long for Owen to notice significant changes in her.

"She looks terrible. She's definitely put on, probably, a good 15 pounds. Look at her eyes, she has dark circles under her eyes. She looks genuinely frightened there," he said as he watched the tape.

Owen believes Debra was coached to be more conservative. Tuesday's look was a drastic change from when the former Greco Middle School teacher was first arrested in June.

"Her hair is shorter, she does has bangs, she's wearing less makeup. I think she looks younger," Owen continued. "She doesn't look well. She looks stressed out, like maybe the ramifications of the whole thing have taken a toll on her physically."

Debra's dramatic eye shadow and bright red lipstick were gone, and a small gold crucifix hung around her neck.

"After this happened, she really turned to God. She became very involved in the Bible and Christian book stores, as well as more symbolic gestures, like the cross she is wearing," Owen said.

Owen had dated Debra since he was in college. So did he see anything unusual then, or when he was married to her?

"There was some behavior that was speculative. We went through a rough patch, a period of time and she was treated for depression as well as some eating disorders. She had sought help, saw a psychologist, was on some medication," Owen recalled. "So there were some patterns, but nothing to the extent that she was capable of what she was charged with. I would never have married her if I thought that was the case."

Owen had not spoken with Debra in months, so he said it was "hard to say" if Debra really is insane, as her defense would indicate. Nonetheless, the tactic caught him off guard.

"I was very surprised that was the direction they decided to take with the defense. Honestly I had thought in the back of my mind that they would have reached plea agreement of some sort. I'm not sure that it's the best strategy to take; I think it's risky," Owen offered. "I know it's a very difficult position to defend. As well, I know [Debra's attorney] John Fitzgibbons represented a doctor that killed his wife in Plant City in front of his children, and that was unsuccessful. I'm not expert, but I don't feel like this would be the best strategy to take."

As more evidence is released, Owen said it will be difficult for him to hear more details, and he does not plan to attend the trial.

Debra, he added, has yet to sign the final divorce papers.

Police say South Haven teacher 'wed' 14-year-old girl in pagan ritual

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. — A teacher and a 14-year-old former female student whom she is accused of sexually assaulting participated in witchcraft together and even "wed" in a pagan ritual, police said.

Elizabeth Miklosovic, 36, a teacher at South Haven's Baseline Middle School, was arraigned Thursday on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in Van Buren County.

If convicted, Miklosovic faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. She was ordered held on $100,000 bond and remained in the county jail Friday.

Also Thursday, the Kent County prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants for Miklosovic on charges of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct that accuse her of performing illegal sex acts with the student at the teacher's Grand Rapids home.

Miklosovic lives with another woman and their adopted son, authorities said.

The student told a classmate about the relationship and the classmate told school officials, who placed the seventh-grade language arts teacher on leave from her job. Miklosovic has worked for South Haven Public Schools for three years.

The student told Michigan State Police that she and Miklosovic had about five sexual encounters from June to October in the teacher's home, a park in Van Buren County and a state park in Manistee County.

Although the girl was in Miklosovic's class in the past, the sexual contact did not occur until this year, authorities said.

Miklosovic has no previous criminal record in Michigan, state police records show.

She declined to answer reporters' questions after her arraignment.

James Becker has been appointed as Miklosovic's attorney. Contacted Friday at his Paw Paw law office, Becker declined to comment about the case, saying he had not yet seen the police report.

The girl's family said Miklosovic brainwashed the girl into thinking the two did nothing wrong. A relative told The Grand Rapids Press that the family initially believed Miklosovic's interest in the girl — who was described as vulnerable and as having emotional problems — was to help her.

Detective Sgt. Diane Oppenheim of the state police post in South Haven said the student came to trust the teacher so much, she agreed to "marry" the woman in a pagan ritual.

"They also participated in witchcraft together," Oppenheim said.

Her preliminary examination on the Van Buren County charge is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Debra Lafave's arrest on charges she had sex with a 14-year-old student happened six months ago, but national interest in the pretty teacher's case is far from lukewarm.

According to Google.com, which ranks the most-used search terms on its Web site under a feature called Google Zeitgeist, the first week in December was a hot one for Lafave, 24.

The search term "Debra Lafave" ranked No. 6 among the top 10 gaining queries on Google for the week ending Dec. 6.

That was the week Lafave's attorney announced he will pursue an insanity defense, and the week prosecutors released a stack of incriminating evidence against Lafave.

According to the Zeitgeist poll, Lafave fell below longtime Jeopardy! champ "Ken Jennings," but ranked higher than college football coach "Urban Meyer," who that same week made headlines for taking the University of Florida football coaching job.

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised, given the tabloid-style interest in Lafave's case.

After all, one Web site, Not Safe for Work News, took the time to examine what Lafave would look like with a different chin.

No one did that for Jeopardy! winner Ken Jennings. At least not according to a Google search.

Female volleyball coach charged with having sex with player

RACINE, Wis. - A 22-year-old woman who was coach of a private volleyball club has been charged with having sex with one of her 16-year-old male players.

Jennifer L. Bradley of Caledonia made her initial appearance Tuesday in Racine County Circuit Court on a felony charge of sexual assault of a student by an instructional staff member and five misdemeanors.

The criminal complaint said Bradley and the boy had a sexual relationship between June 12 and Sept. 4 while she coached a private club named Next Level Volleyball for which he played.

Bradley was hired in August as an assistant girls volleyball coach at Case High School, where the boy attends school and plays volleyball.

She was suspended in September after the allegations surfaced, and has since resigned her school position, said Linda Flashinski, a spokeswoman for the Racine Unified School District.

The boy allegedly told a sheriff's investigator that he had had sex with Bradley about five or 10 times.

His mother has said her son's grades dropped from A's and B's to D's and F's and he has run away from home at least three times since being confronted about the relationship, according to the complaint.

My point was that this kid have everything a 16 year old wants, he's banging a hot, 22 year old teacher, the dude was having a fine time and life was good.

Sarah Suzanne Bench-Salorio, 28, of Orange, is charged with "multiple" counts of lewd acts with a child, according to Orange police Sgt. Dave Hill.

The suspect, who taught for two years at Santiago Charter Middle School, was arrested Tuesday, a day after one of the boys told his parents about the alleged contact with his former teacher, Hill said.

Bench-Salorio, who taught reading and English, was booked Wednesday at the Orange County Jail, with bail set at $1 million, a jail clerk said.

"Our investigation indicates that the teacher initiated the sexual contact, and that this contact took place over a period of several months," Hill said.

"We're looking at events that spanned several months throughout 2004, and part of that investigation is to determine if it happened sooner than that," Hill said.

"We believe the contact took place at various locations and we're investigating whether it was at the parties' homes or the school," Hill said.

After the one boy came forward, a follow-up investigation "determined there was a second victim," Hill said, but he did not know if both boys knew about each other.

"We are confident in the solidity of our charges," he said.

Bench-Salorio is married to Christopher Salorio, 30, an electrical foreman who garnered 45 percent of votes but lost a bid for trustee in the Orange Unified School District in the November election, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The couple are raising his three siblings -- ages 5, 10 and 14 -- as foster children, according to the newspaper.

Orange Unified School District Superintendent Robert French said Bench-Salorio has been placed on administrative leave, and the district is cooperating in the investigation.

"This is a personnel matter, and on that basis the district can give no additional information. However, the primary concern of the district is always the safety and welfare of its students," French said.

Under provisions of the California Penal Code, police notified the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing of Bench-Salorio's arrest, Hill said.

Investigators are trying to determine if there are other victims, he said.

Janay Willson, 31, was indicted on two counts of sexual assault of a child.



Matagorda County officials said she had a sexual relationship with the 16-year-old male student in December 1999 and January 2000 but it did not come to light until 2004. The student has since graduated.



Willson was a nine-year veteran of the Bay City High School's English department.



Willson resigned from her job right before Christmas. She was suspended when the allegations first came to light on Oct. 31.



"It hurts so much to think that we would have anybody that would break that public trust," said Richard Walton, with the Bay City Independent School District.



Willson was arrested and posted a $40,000 bond.



She was not available for comment.



Residents of the small town were initially shocked to hear about the charges.



"You always think that that's something that happens somewhere else and not here," said Lynn Grebene, the school's Booster Club president.



But he said rumors have circulated for years.



"There's a part of you that believes it. There's part of you that doesn't want to believe it. It's just so far-fetched," Grebene said.



"I thought she was a very concerned teacher. I was absolutely flabbergasted to tell you the truth," said Sally Chitwood, a parent.



Sources told Local 2 that officials are awaiting paternity tests on one of Willson's children to determine if the student is the baby's father.



Willson is also facing an investigation by the State Board of Educators to determine if she will permanently lose her license to teach.

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -- A former high school teacher accused of sleeping with two 15-year-old boys now faces sexual assualt charges.

Tiffany Copley, 25, of Richford, worked at Enosburg Falls High School, before she was fired last week. She pleaded not guilty to the sexual assault charges in court on Monday.

Prosecutors said Monday she admitted having sex with one 15-year-old boy at her Richford home.

According to court papers, "at the end of this encounter, Tiffany told him not to tell anyone, because she could lose her job and children."

Those same court papers say another 15-year-old boy told police he had sex with Copley 10 or 12 times.

He also said Copley sometimes bought him beer.

Both boys attend a different high school in Franklin County.

Prosecutors say detectives are still trying to find out if there are more victims.

In a new twist in the case, Copley has allegedly become a victim herself. Prosecutors have charged Nathan Cheney, 20, with breaking into her home early in the morning when she was not there.

Police said he stole CDs, DVDs, and three pairs of underwear.

Cheney told police he broke in because he wanted sex and a place to sleep.

"We want to make sure everyone is safe, whether it be any possible young teens, people who may have been involve with her, or her," said prosecutor Diane Wheeler. "We don't need a community lashing out at her, either, because it just brings more trauma to the community."

Copley is free, for now. But a judge ordered her not to have contact with any boys under age 15.

She can only speak to her own young children by phone.

ARVADA, Colorado (AP) -- A 40-year-old woman held sex and drug parties with teenage boys, telling police she wanted to be a "cool mom," authorities say.

Sylvia Johnson allegedly provided marijuana, methamphetamine and alcohol to eight boys at parties held at her suburban Denver home in 2003 and 2004. According to court papers, she admitted having sex with five of the boys.

One of the boys told his mother, and Johnson was arrested in December and charged with offenses including sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

According to court papers, Johnson told investigators she was not popular in high school and had finally started "feeling like one of the group."

"She described herself as a 'cool mom,'" police said.

Authorities did not say how many children she has or whether any of them were at the parties.

A message left at the number listed for Johnson was not immediately returned.

Potter said Turner was arrested Monday in Clarkrange, her hometown about 55 miles northeast of McMinnville in central Tennessee.

Conviction on all counts could be punished by up to 100 years in prison. But Potter said it was more likely that a conviction would mean a minimum of a year to several years in prison.

Turner is free on $50,000 bond. She's been placed on leave by the school system.

A telephone message left at the home of her father, who lives in Clarkrange, was not immediately returned Tuesday evening.

Turner's husband filed for divorce in January, alleging inappropriate marital conduct, according to the Southern Standard newspaper in McMinnville.

Different circumstances. The teenager isn't committing the crime here. The law says it's illegal for an adult to have sexual contact with a minor. The law makes no provision for minors having sexual contact with an adult, as odd as that sounds. The kid may not have acted morally, but he didn't break any laws.

But the point I'm trying to make is that if some 14 y-o boy is talking to his friends about how bad he wants to bang his hot teacher, and then it winds up happening...the teacher is held fully accountable, regardless of the kid's intentions all along.

Well, maybe I assume too much in believing that educators are supposed to impart knowledge and prudent decision-making logic into their students.

As an educator working with middle schoolers I think this is a cop out statement. I repeatedly talk about decision making with my students when they get into trouble. I say things such as "Why did you make that choice?" and "That wasn't such a good choice" and "Why was that a bad choice?" several times a day. And when the choices are particularly bad I make sure there are consequences. And we talk about choice making through our study of history at certain points. But I still have kids who do really dumb things. So of course some teachers are going to try and "impart knowledge" and promote "prudent decsion-making logic" but these are still middle schoolers. They are not mini adults, although some truly can act like them 90% of the time. In the end, however, their brain chemistry is different from that of a grown-up and that's why it's incumbent on the grown-up, the teacher, the role model, to make those good choices because they SHOULD have the perspective to know not only what is best for themselves but what is best for the studen they're working with.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, since the very premise of this - that a 12 year old can know that he's found his "true love" and know that he wants to spend the rest of his life with that person - is an utterly ridiculous proposition. Looking back on my first real GF in 8th grade, we were both the same age and I felt that way about her at the time. Now take those feelings and apply them to a 30 year old woman, and it's quite easy to believe that he would be completely obsessed with her. Think of the ego boost you would get to know, at that age, that someone over twice your age is in love with you. Combine that with what I'm sure were very real feelings he had for her at the time, and the outcome was all but written 8 years ago.

They were together for 2 years, I believe - this wasn't just a couple of times in the back of the classroom and she happened to get pregnant. As I recall, he spent an entire summer at her house, much to the chagrin of her husband, who didn't like it but, of course, had no clue what was really going on.

And I don't think there was any real "rebelling" from him - yes, he saw her again when he was not supposed to, but the real issue here is that she left him with 2 kids to raise. At 16. He had no choice but to support the kids by dropping out of school and getting a job.

And finally, you seem to be suggesting that she should have been excused for what she did so that he wouldn't have ended up so screwed up. He was already screwed up because of what she did - letting them be together when he was, what, 15,16 ,17...? You think that would have made things better?! She fucked the kid's life up. He's old enough now that he can do what he wants, but that doesn't mean that they should have been together from the beginning because they were in love. Kids that age - hell, even older - are unable to make such decisions.

Of course teenagers can make responsible decisions. And this particular teenager demonstrated that he is not one of them. But I still maintain that no 12-14 year old can make a rational, informed decision about whether to pursue a long-term relationship with someone twice his age. Not possible. And presumably, that's why we have statutory rape laws on the books.

As an educator working with middle schoolers I think this is a cop out statement. I repeatedly talk about decision making with my students when they get into trouble. I say things such as "Why did you make that choice?" and "That wasn't such a good choice" and "Why was that a bad choice?" several times a day. And when the choices are particularly bad I make sure there are consequences. And we talk about choice making through our study of history at certain points. But I still have kids who do really dumb things. So of course some teachers are going to try and "impart knowledge" and promote "prudent decsion-making logic" but these are still middle schoolers. They are not mini adults, although some truly can act like them 90% of the time. In the end, however, their brain chemistry is different from that of a grown-up and that's why it's incumbent on the grown-up, the teacher, the role model, to make those good choices because they SHOULD have the perspective to know not only what is best for themselves but what is best for the studen they're working with.

Great post barkeep, I guess I should've said that they need a good base from parenting in addition to what they're getting from their teachers.

I would guess those who do make the right decisions versus the ones who don't come from very different households.

More Lafave Recordings Released

TAMPA - Recordings of more telephone conversations between 24- year-old former high school teacher Debra Lafave and the teenage student she's charged with molesting were released by the state attorney's office Tuesday.

Transcripts of those conversations were released in December, along with some audio recordings.

Prosecutors were not expected to release more recordings because of the time and expense of muddling the voice of the juvenile to help prevent listeners from identifying him.

The television tabloid ``Inside Edition'' agreed to pay to have the youth's voice muddled from more recordings, allowing for Tuesday's release, state officials said.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Female teachers accused of sex crimes against underage male students have been grabbing headlines lately. Many of them are young and beautiful, their stories sordid and intriguing.

But to law enforcement, they're something else — criminals who have committed statutory rape against a minor.

This week alone, two cases have hit the news: Cops say one Texas teacher, Kathy Denise White (search (javascript:siteSearch('Kathy Denise White');)) had sex with a 17-year-old, and Tennessee teacher Pamela Rogers Turner (search (javascript:siteSearch('Pamela Rogers Turner');)) had sex with a 13-year-old boy.

They join at least three other recent cases: Florida teacher Debra LaFave (search (javascript:siteSearch('Debra LaFave');)), 24, is expected to plead insanity to charges she had sex with a 14-year-old student, according to her lawyer; California teacher Sarah Bench-Salorio (search (javascript:siteSearch('Sarah Bench-Salorio');)), 28, allegedly molested two boys when they were 12 and 14; and 33-year-old California teacher Rebecca Boicelli (search (javascript:siteSearch('Rebecca Boicelli');)) was arrested last month on statutory rape and related charges after DNA tests confirmed that a former student fathered her 2-year-old baby when he was 16.

All of them follow the trail laid by Mary Kay Letourneau (search (javascript:siteSearch('Mary Kay Letourneau');)), whom the media tracked again last year when she was released from prison after more than seven years. The former Seattle teacher said she’s still in love with her now-21-year-old student (who was 12 when she was 34 and fathered the first of the two children they had together); the pair have since reportedly gotten engaged.

Law enforcement officials and sociologists wonder whether there are really more of these cases, or are they just getting more press?

"Certainly the reporting of these kinds of things do prompt other reports," said Tom Eveslage, a journalism professor at Temple University (search (javascript:siteSearch('Temple University');)). "It gets a little bit more sticky when we start talking about [whether] this justifies the media going gaga over all these kinds of stories."

Female teachers who commit statutory rape still represent a fraction of the number of sex offenders, though few hard numbers are available and the FBI's National Crime Information Center (search (javascript:siteSearch('National Crime Information Center');)) said it doesn't document the occupations of the reported offenders.

Still, the stories make news, because reporters, chat rooms and members of the public are mystified about why a teacher would have sex with a student who's underage.

"Older women involved with underage males is nothing new," said Louis B. Schlesinger, a forensic psychologist at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (search (javascript:siteSearch('John Jay College of Criminal Justice');) ) in New York. "That’s been going on many, many, many years. The general view is that it’s a rite of passage. … The guy is lucky."

But the "guy" is also a minor, the "rite of passage," a crime — even if it was consensual sex.

Just as there’s pedophilia involving young children, there’s also a related disorder called hebophilia, which is sexual attraction to adolescents, or postpubescent minors. In the smattering of recent cases, the students were between the ages of 13 and 17.

"Some adult men and women are attracted to teenagers," said Schlesinger. "These are teachers with boundary problems. Their boundaries are very fluid."

Last summer, a report contracted by the government under the "No Child Left Behind Act" (search (javascript:siteSearch('%22No Child Left Behind%22');)) drew ire from the American Federation of Teachers (search (javascript:siteSearch('American Federation of Teachers');)) and other education leaders. It was an attempt to document cases of sexual offenses by teachers of their students, but "even the preface to the report, written by Deputy Education Secretary Eugene Hickok (never one to shy away from criticizing public schools), expresses reservations about the author's jumbling the terms 'sexual abuse' and 'sexual misconduct,'" the AFT said in a statement in July.

"This confusion is especially troubling because the report could have supported policy makers, parents and school officials working to keep sexual predators away from students," the AFT statement read. "Sexual abuse" refers to the more serious charges of molestation; "sexual misconduct" is a broader and vaguer term.

But despite the negative press teachers and schools — mostly in the public school system — get when these sorts of cases are reported, the National Education Association (search (javascript:siteSearch('National Education Association');)) said children and teens are still safe in school.

"Schools are among the safest places for children to be, statistically speaking," said NEA spokesman Michael Pons. "There is a whole network of people there to take care of the children's health. Within that community, there is built-in support to prevent any inappropriate thing."

But, he said, the NEA does take such issues seriously and has a number of policies in place to prevent inappropriate relationships between teachers and students of any gender from developing.

"When there's an allegation for inappropriate conduct, it absolutely should be investigated," said Pons. "It should be turned over to the authorities. We absolutely support that.

"Any time something bad like this happens, obviously it's going to be news — it is quite remarkable," Pons said. "It's a signal to parents and schools to be more vigilant."

The number of cases of sexual abuse by teachers — female and male — is still by many estimates less than 10 percent of all sex crimes against minors, though there have been stories about male teachers committing statutory rape with their female students in the news for decades.

But the five or more cases that have gotten publicity lately have still involved serious charges, and many unanswered questions. A whole host of factors plays into how that attraction springs up and what sort of woman — or man — would do such a thing. And of course, each case is individual.

From a criminal standpoint, it has to do with exhibitionism, manipulation, power and a number of other physiological and psychological elements, according to Schlesinger.

"We don’t know the details of any of them — why they were brought to the jury system," he said. "It’s very hard to know from a distance the levels of motivation for these people."

Media analysts say the coverage in some media is glorified as salacious when it comes to female teachers having sex with their teenaged students.

"This story is part crime drama, part Penthouse letter," said Matthew Felling, media director of the Center for Media and Public Affairs (search (javascript:siteSearch('Center for Media and Public Affairs');)). "It all began with the Letourneau case, which was a gateway drug for the news networks. They got hooked on it."

Female teachers are often treated differently in the media than male teachers who have sex with underage students.

"The main dichotomy is in coverage — men are demonized, women are diagnosed," Felling said. "Men are beasts, but women are troubled, or mentally ill." Or the women are simply portrayed as voluptuous and sexual. In the LaFave case, suggestive photographs of her surfaced shortly after the news of her affair with the student broke.

The story is so accepted that it was even one of the plotlines in NBC’s "Friends" — Phoebe’s younger brother had an affair with his teacher and wound up fathering her children and marrying her — and a twist on it (with a female neighbor instead of a teacher and a high school student) is in the current ABC hit "Desperate Housewives," both on prime-time network television.

Many of the most high-profile teachers in the news lately have been charismatic, which Schlesinger says contributes to the media and public interest.

"When a woman is an offender, it’s treated differently — especially if she’s attractive," he said. "It shakes everybody’s conception of what should be."

But sometimes, the "offenders" turn out not to be guilty.

"The teacher has to be concerned because there can be a vindictive kid" who can falsely accuse the person at the head of the class of a sex crime, said Temple University's Eveslage. "This is where the media has to be careful."

But, he added, the press is doing its job as a societal watchdog in a complex system of checks and balances.

"The abuse of authority and power by church leaders or government officials or teachers deserves to be reported," said Eveslage.

"Power needs to be watched. The media provides that check as a watchdog."

A student who told officials he and a teacher at South Central High School had a sexual encounter took a class taught by the teacher last year, according to court documents.

Ongoing conversations and letters exchanged between the teacher and student led to a late-night encounter in the school parking lot, according to information provided by the student, which was included in an affidavit for a search warrant submitted by the Pitt County Sheriff's Office.

Katherine B. "Katy" Tew, 30, of 112 S. Baywood Lane was arrested Monday on charges of indecent liberties with a student and sex offense with a student by a teacher. State law makes it illegal for a teacher or other school personnel to have sexual contact with a student at the same school, regardless of the student's age.

Tew, an English teacher and cheerleading coach, called and wrote her former student before meeting him in the parking lot near the football field in December, according to the affidavit. She was wearing pajamas and carrying a bottle of tequila, the student told the investigators.

The 17-year-old senior reported the encounter to the school's resource officer, which sparked the investigation, according to the affidavit submitted by sheriff's office investigator Lt. Karen Kilpatrick seeking approval from a judge to search Tew's home.

Officers serving the search warrant seized a pair of pajamas with cartoons of moons and stars on them and a handwritten letter that referred to the student. Investigators also are searching through files on a computer taken from the high school.

The student, who took an English class taught by Tew last year, said Tew began giving him letters this year. He gave investigators a number of those letters, according to the affidavit.

The student also told investigators he sometimes stopped by Tew's classroom at her request between his classes last semester, a practice that resulted in his being late several times to his next class, according to the affidavit. When he was late, Tew would write him an excuse note, the student told investigators.

An investigator interviewed the teacher of the class to which the student had been late, and that teacher confirmed that the student had provided excuses signed by Tew on four occasions.

The teen also showed investigators a cell phone text message, which he said Tew sent him. Sent on Dec. 15, the message said, "Can you or would you want to see me tomorrow night? Home alone would love to see you. Call cell and leave a message. Y or N," Kilpatrick wrote in the affidavit.

Once, the student said he asked Tew, "Why would you do this to your husband?" The next day, he said Tew gave him a card thanking him for making her realize that she loved her husband. No more than a week later, however, he said Tew started contacting him again.

Tew's husband, Andy Tew, is a teacher and assistant football coach at South Central. The search warrant affidavit indicates the student decided to approach authorities about the situation because Katy Tew had said she had told her husband of the relationship.

The student decided to tell Katy Tew the relationship "could not be what she wanted," according to the affidavit.

When they met in the parking lot, Tew got into his car and offered him some tequila, the student said. He said he declined and Tew "kissed him and they started to have sex in the back seat," according to the affidavit.

Tew is on administrative leave with pay from her job. She has been in that status since Jan. 25 and will remain there until school officials are able to look over the evidence, school spokeswoman Deborah Long said.

Tew made bail after being arrested Monday. As part of the conditions of her release, she cannot have any contact with any minor younger than 18 without another adult present or go on the premises of any Pitt County public school facility.

Her next court date is scheduled for April 15.

(Anderson-AP) March 8, 2005 - A Westside High School teacher in Anderson has been suspended with pay after police said they found her with a 17-year-old T.L. Hanna High School male student in a parked vehicle.

Prosecutor Chrissy Adams says 33-year-old Donna Carr Galloway will not face criminal charges because of the student's age. Adams says authorities can file a criminal sexual conduct with a minor charge in cases involving children younger than 16.

An Anderson County sheriff's report says Galloway was found with the male student about 11:30 Friday night at a boat ramp. Anderson District Five Superintendent Betty Bagley says the teen had never attended Westside and apparently met Galloway outside of school activities.

Bagley says Galloway has been employed with the district for about eleven years.

School Sex Scandal A Local School Teacher Under Investigation

The kids at Ricker Middle School finished the day without one of their regular teachers. The woman usually in charge of conducting the band is now being questioned for how she conducted herself during school. The Buena Vista School Superintendent confirmed to TV 5 the band instructor is suspended with pay for allegations of sexual misconduct.

Ricker parents told TV5 they're hoping the accusations aren't real but whether or not the allegations are true, they tell their students to be on the look out of inappropriate behavior on campus. TV5 couldn't reach Ricker's band instructor for comment via email or phone. The school says she'll be suspended with pay pending the outcome of a police investigation.

Headlines in Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee and California are once again telling the tales of adult women arrested for having sexual relations with teenage boys.
Public reaction to such cases is changing, authorities say, and there is an increasing recognition of women as sexual abusers.
Plenty of people still say "this boy has got it made," but now more people are saying "this is really a problem," said Judy Berman, senior manager of the Department of Justice's Center for Sex Offender Management, which will soon issue a report on female sex offenders.
Cases now making headlines are reminiscent of Seattle teacher Mary Kay Letourneau, who was 34 and the married mother of four when she started having sex with a 12-year-old male student. Letourneau served seven years in prison and has announced plans to marry Vili Fualaau, now 22, with whom she has had two children.
More recent headlines include Florida teacher Debra LaFave, 23; Oklahoma basketball coach Elisa Nielson, 29; Tennessee physical-education teacher Pamela Turner, 27; and California teacher trainee Margaret De Barraicua, 30. Each of the four was charged with sexual assault of a male student aged between 12 and 16. Police say Mrs. De Barraicua was arrested in the act, in her car, while her toddler son sat inside in his car seat.
On March 2, police in Braxton County, W.Va., arrested Toni Lynn Woods, a 37-year-old middle-school teacher, and charged her with having sexual relations with five students younger than 16.
The number of female inmates doing time for sex offenses has doubled in recent years: In 1991, there were 647 women in prison for rape and other sexual offenses; in 2002, there were 1,300 female sex offenders, according to prisoner reports collected by the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics. However, sex offenders remain a small percentage of female inmates.
"We don't really think there are more sex offenders. We think the reporting has gotten better," said Allison Taylor, executive director of Texas' Council on Sex Offender Treatment.
What kind of woman seeks sex with teenage boys? In the past, researchers have relied on four concepts: "Boundary crossers" who seek affirmation, affection or something else from a vulnerable partner; women who are emotionally disturbed or mentally ill; women who are predatory pedophiles; and women who are committing sexual offenses at the behest of someone else, usually an adult male.
Much more research is needed, "as many women won't fit into those categories," Ms. Berman said.
Author and sex counselor Douglas Weiss sees adult women who seek sex from teenage boys as pedophiles.
As with males, female pedophiles feel ill-equipped for intimate relationships with other adults, "so they begin to sexualize younger people" -- especially students or children in their care who are unlikely to reject them or control them, said Mr. Weiss, who is executive director of Heart to Heart Counseling Centers in Colorado Springs.
These women have a "grooming" process for their young victims -- they pick vulnerable boys and "befriend them, stroke their hair, touch their body, affirm them," said Mr. Weiss, who has written a book, "She Has a Secret: Understanding Female Sexual Addiction."
Boys are harmed by such crimes because "what they've learned is that sex is not about love, it's not about relationships, it's not about spiritual or emotional connections; it's about two bodies being crammed together as objects," he said.
Such acts don't make a boy feel "lucky," said Mr. Weiss, who said he had been sexually victimized as a minor. "You usually feel guilt and shame and awkwardness afterwards. And you feel more alone than before because you didn't connect to the person. It was just an act."
American culture, laws, policies and public opinion seldom consider women as sexual predators or teenage boys as victims.
"The words 'sexual assault' and 'sexual aggression' tend to conjure up an image of a male perpetrator and a female victim," Myriam S. Denov wrote in the Journal of Sex Research in 2003.
Many state laws still assume that sex perpetrators are men, which makes it hard to prosecute women for rape or other sexual crimes. Lawmakers have now begun to recast sex-crimes laws in neutral terms.
But public opinion about sex between older women and teenage boys still reflects the views of 1940s sex researcher Alfred C. Kinsey, who believed, in the words of one former assistant, "that some child-adult contacts were not harmful and possibly even beneficial."
"Unfortunately, in our society there has long been the myth that boys enjoy sex and they would be crazy not to accept it from anywhere they can get it," said Maria Molett, executive director of the Counseling Institute of Texas.
Female sexual deviancy is just as real and damaging as male sexual deviancy, said Ms. Molett, recalling how one of her clients -- an ex-teacher -- had convinced herself that the teenage boy she assaulted loved her.
"It took me quite a few years to get her to recognize that this child was not in love with her, did not want to marry her and, in fact, was extremely traumatized by her and even tried to kill himself," she said.

Lafave May Negotiate Plea Deal

TAMPA - The 24-year-old teacher accused of molesting her 14-year-old student hopes to make a deal with prosecutors without having to endure a trial.

Debra Lafave's attorney and the assistant state attorney prosecuting her both told Judge Wayne Timmerman on Tuesday morning that they hoped to begin plea negotiations soon.

John Fitzgibbons, who represents Lafave, said a defense- hired psychiatrist has interviewed the teacher and they are waiting for a similar interview from a state psychiatrist. After that, both sides will sit down for a ``serious discussion,'' Fitzgibbons said.

``I don't know if we will be able to resolve this or not,'' he said. ``I think there would be a lot of advantages for both the prosecution and the defense to resolve this case without a trial.''

Fitzgibbons said he has not yet taken the deposition of the 14-year-old boy, hoping to prevent him that indignity if a plea can be reached.

Timmerman postponed the trial from April 25 to July 18 to give both sides time for discussions. If a deal is not reached, however, Timmerman said he would not postpone the trial again.

After the hearing, Fitzgibbons said Lafave has been diagnosed to have ``severe emotions issues.''

``Once those become known, I think that will explain a lot,'' he said.

Lafave faces up to 15 years in prison on charges of lewd and lascivious battery. Fitzgibbons would not speculate on whether a plea deal would include jail time.

Lafave, a Greco Middle School reading teacher, and the 14-year-old student talked often via cell phone after the school year ended in June 2004. The two engaged in sexual activity at her town home in Riverview, then had intercourse on June 14 inside the portable classroom where Lafave taught, court records show.

The relationship continued on a trip to Ocala, where the teen's aunt saw the two. The aunt called the teens mother. He later confessed to the relationship and police were notified.

Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With Male Student
Nicole Andrea Barnhart Teaches At Denver High School

DENVER -- A married high school social studies teacher was arrested Wednesday, accused of having a sexual relationship with her underage male student.

Nicole Andrea Barnhart faces charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

Detectives did not identify Barnhart's alleged victim, only to say that he is younger than 18 years old and is a currently a student at Denver's Ponderosa High School.

The investigation, which is still ongoing, revealed that Barnhart had sexual relations with the victim on more than one occasion in Parker, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

No other alleged victims have been identified at this time.

Barnhart is currently in custody at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility in lieu of $50,000 bond.

She has been placed on administrative leave, and the school district has hired a substitute to cover her classes. Barnhart was hired in the Douglas County School District in 1995 and as a teacher at Ponderosa High School in August 2002, the district said.

"These are serious allegations," said Superintendent Jim Christensen. "We are doing everything we can to maintain the trust of our students, parents and community. We will work closely with law enforcement as we review our own policies and procedures."

The district said law enforcement and the courts now need to do their jobs and the school is making certain that students and their families are informed of what has occurred.

"This is very difficult information for us to process," said Principal Cathy Brondos. "We will do everything in our power to ensure that the victim's privacy and rights are protected, and we will take care of any students who may need to speak with a counselor."
