This is one of two threads devoted to a narrative role-playing adventure. The character framework utilizes AD&D 3.0 but the “system” is free form. It is set in a fantasy world of my own creation, called Crella. This thread tracks an adventuring party from the realm of Cranstone. The other thread, which is entitled The Prytian Quest, deals with a group from neighboring Prytia.
Feel free to comment throughout the thread, but please do not threadjack. The idea is to continue the thread as a narrative role-playing adventure. Also, if you wish to participate as a secondary character, there is a waiting list so just drop me a PM.
All out-of-character (OC) posts should be made in the regular font and color. Questions, comment, etc. All in-character posts (IC) should be made blue, the color which I will initiate below.
Posting in character should be done in third person past tense, using the name of your character or appropriate personal pronouns. A very simple example: “Sol moved into the cavern” should be used instead of “I move into the cavern.” When your character speaks, set it apart with quote marks. Try to be tidy with grammar and spelling so things are clear to the other players. You can assume and therefore interact with typical surroundings (i.e., if you’re in a tavern, you can order an ale without prompting), but do not “power game” events or surroundings that have substantial impact on the characters and plot. That’s my role. It may take awhile to get the hang of this narrative style of RPG, and I may step in to correct you or ask you to edit portions of your post, but it’ll flow well soon enough.
Primary players, as we begin take the opportunity to describe your character and his thoughts going in. Be descriptive, and interact with one another.
The primary characters in this thread include:
A Cranstonian wizard, Kit'an'il (Blade)
Two Rhyllan fighters, Reod Dai (Ardent Enthusiast) and Colton Mayes (blade6119).
A Rhyllan ranger, Nightion (JeffNights)
An Azaran rogue, Brayden de Brach (indoorsoccersim)
A Scallite bard, Jadrich the Barkeep (Raven Hawk)

Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Cranstone, the keep of Lady Del Var was not much to look at, its low stone walls rising up upon a bleak and bare ridgeline that only broken up with a ragged assortment of solitary trees. An insignificant village, just another grubby gathering of farmers and craftsmen, lay at the base of the ridge. There was little to suggest that this setting was any different than that of any other Crellan land.
Yet something was afoot, it seemed. The motley gathering of men within the walls of the keep were united in some manner of special cause, having answered the call put forth by Lady Del Var for adventurers. They had waited, patiently at first, while the Lady and her minions had interviewed each of them, apparently screening out those unworthy of the task. Now six of those men had been led to a large meeting hall, where resided an unlikely mixture of Cranstonian, Scallite, Rhyllan, and Azaran blood. The latter individual, a pirate rogue, seemed particularly out of place, and the three Rhyllans present made no attempt to hide their disdain.
"We don't need a blasted Azaran with us", muttered Reod Dai just out of earshot of Brayden de Brach, "he'll certainly compromise what we've came to do."
Reod glared at Brayden and spun around to look at the rest of group and was comforted by what he saw. At least he had Rhyllan brothers with him. He gestured for Colton Mayes and Nightion to come closer.
"Be weary of the Azaran", Reod whispered to the other Rhyllans, "I don't know why he's here or what he can do for us, but he's certainly up to no good."

Leaning against the wall, the one man, that others seem to notice, and appear to have disdain for smiles a broadening friendly smile.
His mustache and beard forming points in three corners, a slight twinkle in his eye shows that life and fun is what he is all about.
He leans back against the wall, throwing his cloak back, away from the hilt of his rapier, tucking his thumbs behind his belt, he laughs loudly, so all can hear.
"Obviously, Lady Del Var figured the Rhyllans couldn't get it done, and called in the one who could." nodding towards the Cranstonian, he moves forward extending his hand in a gesture of friendship.
"Brayden De Brach, adventurer of the high seas, and general friend to all." The last of his sentence was stated a little loud, so it echoed throughout the room, so all could hear.

"Brayden, isnt that a bloody girls name?" Colton stated after being personally insulted from the comment about Rhyllans. In an attempt to gain support of the other Rhyllans who hold a bond due to their orgin, he stated that "He will have to prove himself to me before i go trusting a pirate. Next thing i know he will be plundering my items while i be asleep."
Colton almost felt a little worried that this one Azaran character might actually become the friend he said he was. Colton was worried that all of these men might become his friend. His troubled past had led him to reclusiveness, and now he was being forced to trust men he had never met. "Ill just be keeping an eye on him them, as well as you others" Colton stated in an attempt to hide what he was really thinking, which was that he was afraid he would actually like the men, and they would actually do something great....together.

“Gentlemen! Gentlemen!” inserted a songly tenor voice, “and I do use that term loosely. Not so much because I question anybodies breeding, yet moreso because I question that many of you to be truly gentle.”
A wirey man of about 12 stones weight and just shy of the second yard tall, had hopped upon a small bench in the clear sight of the remaining five. His chestnut brown mop of hair was straight, yet flimsy and cut just above the ear.
“Quarrel not good neighbors. Or, if you do, at least give me a chance to make a good enough wager where it would be worth my while.”
The man stepped down from the bench with grace and elegance rare to men. His foot made no detectable sound as it hit the stone paving next to the bench. The man reached into his cloak as if to produce a sword, yet none came when his hand returned to the light of the sun. Instead, a pewter wine goblet came forth from his hand and quicker than one might have thought possible a wine skin was soon filling it with a red liquid.
“My name is Jadrich the Barkeep. Please, Gentlemen,” a wry wink given to all, “ We can’t let this Fillian wine go to waste.”

Turning towards the person insulting him, Brayden smiles that warm smile. "No my friend, but you are close, it's a name that women say a lot though." he manages a wink towards Colton, and moves towards a chair.
"Honestly gentlemen, I look at it this way, you may hate me for what I am, or where I am from, good. But think about this. We are going to be companions, we have to live with that. I myself look at it this way, when I travel on the sea, I am with others of my kind, all whom I could hate, or not. But on that ship, we are civil to one another. But the minute we hit shore, it's fair game." He looks to the men, reaching up, he pulls his shoulder length hair back revealing a terrible scar running the length of his neck.
He reaches across the table grabbing 5 cups and the flask of wine from Jadrich. "Thank you kind sir!"
He carefully pours the equal amount across all 5 cups. When finished, he takes a long swig off the skin, finishing it all, setting it down on the table..
Grabbing a glass, he stands, and raises it to the other six. "To our health, and a proper journey, may our luck and skill carry us on."

Heh. The game's afoot. :D
Reod looked into the cup, in hopes of perhaps finding something in it that could upset him. Finding nothing, he drank from the cup. Reod couldn't quite figure out what was going on, or who he was with.
He wondered if anyone here recognized him. Certainly, they heard of his name and the battles he fought in the past. Surely they knew of his catastrophic mistake. No doubt Colton knew he was. That made sense to Reod, since Colton didn't seem overly impressed with him.
If he only knew the many battles Reod had won, if Colton only knew why Reod made that mistake...

Raising his cup with all as Brayden makes a toast, Jadrich then tips it back and takes a sip.
"Or as we say in Scalla, 'Rach tha da, sen arvanalc!' which means 'Chew often, swallow once!'" Jadrich introspects for a moment noticing the confused looks. "You know what? It never made much sense to me either. . . "
Jadrich pauses to consider something for a moment.
"Reod . . . Reod . . . Where have I heard that name before? Have you ever been to Fillia, neighbor?"
"You have likely heard my name before," responded Reod hesitantly, "but it's not from my travels in Fillia. It's likely you remember my name from the stories of my battles. I am Reod Dai."
That would do it, Reod was sure. The mockery, the laughter would all soon start. Reod downed what was left in his cup and went to stare at something on the wall across the room. Hopefully, he wouldn't hear the others talking or laughing about him.

The moment that Reod mentioned that he was Reod Dai, Jadrich knew exactly who it was. In fact the verses of the story started playing through his head as they sat. He knew this story well from his days as an innkeeper and entertainer. Jadrich looked into Reod's eyes and knew what he must do.
"Yes, good Reod. I believe that the story goes something like this?"
Jadrich hummed a note with his tenor voice.
"Reod Dai, Reod Dai
Inc vun nach shan havolai
Est du shas, le mar ot nas
Inc vun nach shan marolai
Reod Dai, Reod Dai
Inc vun nach shan havolai
Est van caal van baranaal
Du shas bar gedulai . . ."
Jadrich held the last note for a moment.
"Have you ever heard it in Scallan before, Reod? I think that is much more beautiful that way. For those of you that do not know Scallan, let me sum it up in common. Reod Dai here is a war hero!"

Raising the cup offered generously by the pirate rouge, Nightion sipped the rather harsh liquid down. He did not immeadiately share the intense hate that his fellow Rhyllan brothers did of Brayden. Hailing from the far Northern Woods of Rhyllan, he has learned temperance and patience, as was needed to survive. He'd wait before making a harsh judgement, but he'd be catious, nonetheless.

Upon further inspection of Jadrich, one would find that his clothes seem to be loose fitting, almost in a deliberate manner to hide his slim physique. The dark blue jerkin and dyed black pants cinch together tightly around the waist at a black leather belt with an ornate silver buckle. The belt has a scabbard fit for a long oddly shaped dagger positioned directly beneath the buckle. This appears to be the only weapon that he carries. One would assume that it is being held by the Lady's guards to be recovered when they leave the keep. The only visible armor that Jadrich sports is some thick leather bracers that cover his wrists down to his elbow. Draped about his shoulders is a black dyed woolen cape which has seen better days. Though it looks as if it is beginning to fray, it also looks both comfortable and warm. Upon his head, a small leather cap adorned with a blue feather to match his jerkin. This garment as well looks to be quite weathered and in need of a new feather.
Jadrich often fiddles about and has a hard time standing still. His motions are smooth, yet they do not flow. It can only be described that he has a 'hard' grace, the type that you would find in a tiger rather than a dancer. His piercing gaze is hard to keep. His brown-eyes, though hard, have a feeling of warmth and understanding. His face is oval with high cheekbones, clean shaven, with fair skin. Small pockets under his eyes make one think that he does not get much sleep. His smile, though impish, houses two dimples and a straight white set of teeth.
When he is not engaged in conversation, he always seems to be humming some popular tune . . .
Hmmmm, hmmmm, hmmm hmmm, hmmmm, hmmm, hmmm . . .
Reod Dai looked every bit the part of a seasoned warrior. He stood a few inches taller than the rest of his companions in the room, and it was quite obvious to all that he was a well conditioned fighter.
Today, he wore nothing spectacular. He wore black boots, brown pants, and a matching tunic that did little to hide his muscular size. His hood was down, revealing shoulder length brown hair. Attached to his left side was a longsword. Jadrich would be the first to tell you that Reod had deep blue eyes. Reod typically tried to keep the attention away from himself.
Reod remembered the days of yesteryear, when he was proud to wear glistening armor each day. Back then, he wanted the attention, he craved it. Very little was beyond Reod's grasp. All Reod knew now was he wanted to avoid contact with most everyone. It was impossible, he knew, but he had to try.
Lady Del Var remembered the Reod Dai of old, and chose to forgive him of his horrible blunder. For that, Reod pledged loyalty to her. In turn, that's why he was in this room with this group of adventurers.
Reod was determined to regain his honor and he knew that would have to be through battles. He knew nothing of what the future held, but knew it was better than what the present had for him.

Jadrich would be the first to tell you that Reod had deep blue eyes.
Dereth got lost in Reods dreamy blue eyes ;) .
Dereth grew up in the war-torn border towns of Rhylla. Even from young age he exemplfied a talent for killing. It first happened when he was 11 and killed 40 men with only a dagger, single handily turning the tide of the Rhyllan Civil War on the fields of Carellia. From this day on, he was exalted as a hero, and revieved nothing but the best training and education. Then came the accident, when he accidently struck down his mentor in a fit of rage. He was expelled from the military academy, and was left to fend for himself in the Rhyllan Wilderness. This led to his strength increasing, but a lack of education from here on out left him always wanting more Wisdom, something he would be hard pressed to find. He became a Robin Hood of types, fighting to protect the small towns which he so beloved as a young boy. He made a name for himself yet again fighting in the outer areas of Rhylla. Then one day a beggar found his camp deep in the woods. He told him of the amazing adventure party being formed and that they had requested his presence for a chance to join. He agreed instantly in hopes of restoring his honor and a chance at glory. As he began his journey, he ran into many old friends from his days at the academy. He knew from that point on this would be an amazing experience. Dereth is a menacing figure of a man, 6'1, Bonde hair with looks to melt any woman's heart. He is of a strong build, but still accustomed to his wilderness time and therefore has lost something of his charisma and mannors. He has a scar on his chest from a wound he recieved when battling the Fire Dragon of the Rhylllan Ice Mountains, which he defeated using a combination of strength, wit(what wit he had), and amazing reflexes.
Paging Vince. You have a phone call in the blue room.

"Hmmmmm, hmmm hmmm hm, hmmmm hmmm hmmm, hmmm . . .
Old Calidath, wooden leg and all
Jumped ship at syrens call
The seas were rough,
Though he was tough,
He washed away in the squall.
Poor Calidath, broken heart and all
Who became the syrens thrall
Hmmm, hmm, hmm, hmmm,
Hmmm, hmm, hmm, hmmm,
The rest I cannot recall . . ."
A momentary grin came across Jadrich's face.
"Quite a motley gathering of men we have here."
Then, he took a deep breath and began humming again.
"Hmmmmm, hmmm hmmm hm, hmmmm hmmm hmmm, hmmm . . ."

"Jadrich, when this thing is over with we shall have to speak of your future," said a raised female voice, deep and carrying from near the doorway. "Your talents might be worthy of a more permanent position here, if it suits you."
A woman of middle-age, with two grim-looking armed men close behind, was advancing into the hall. A smile graced her lips, but it remained small and lacked for warmth. Her hair was her dominant feature, dark with a reddish hue and sweeping about her face and down upon her dark silken gown.
Middle aged, perhaps...her face was quite hard but still had a youthful smoothness to the skin. That Lady Del Var was a sorcerer was known to all of them, and it was always difficult to gauge the age of Cranstonians.
She halted a few paces beyond the group, and placed her hands on her hips as she appraised them. A Cranstonian elf-mage...nothing worthy of concern, for he lacked her power, and she trusted him until proved otherwise. Rhyllans, two of them warriors of some repute and - hmmm? - issues? The other a ranger, always a hard lot to figure. An Azaran rogue, of all things! But one selected tools for a task, and that this one had certain talents was without question. And Jadrich. She'd liked him from the start.
A delcious blend of brute and brain. But would they be worthy enough? Time would tell.
"Questions, gentlemen...I'm sure you've got many of them. Now is the time to ask. You are the cream of the crop. The chaff has been cleared away, and will serve me in other - hmmm? - capacities? I will provide you with the details of this expedition shortly, but perhaps you have things you'd like to know before I proceed?"

Nightion regarded his unfinished drink while hearing Lady Delvar speak. Debating inwardly a bit, he finally stands..
"My Lady", the Ranger says with a bow of his head."Upon hearing your call for men on a great quest, I felt it was my duty to serve Rhylla. In doing that I also left my own life behind, when this is over are we just to pick and go back with a simple thanks, or are there other rewards in line?"

"Nightion," the lady replied, gently spoken but with the smile diminished to an emotionless stare. "I would remind you that you serve me in this matter, not Rhylla. The empire matters not, except that what is kept from Prytian hands benefits them. However..."
She paused to absently adjust a thick, bejeweled silver ring on the middle finger of her left hand. The small, cool smile returned. "If this...thing is what I believe it may be...your rewards will be ample. Trust in that."

Jadrich took to one knee so quickly that you thought that the ground had moved out from under him. Tipping his hat slightly, he bowed to the beautiful noblewoman. The movement seemed as if it had been rehearsed and performed thousands of times prior.
Remaining on one knee, but replacing the hat on his head, Jadrich spoke, discounting Nightion's words:
"Good Lady, your compliments are beyond their merit. Yet, I thank thee for the kind words. They will sing in my ears for weeks to come. "
Rising from his knee and looking into the Lady's eyes, he continued:
"Similarly, I apologize for Nightion's quick words. Though, the question arose in us all, we should trust in your judgement. I know you to be a wise lady and would not think that you would select such men as you have, if you knew there wouldn't be reward in it. True, there are some of us here for whom gold does not carry its weight, yet some of us did see the invitation as a profitable opportunity. I'd fein to think that you would have judged otherwise in your wisdom."

Lady Del Var chuckled, a deep, throaty and almost guttural sound. She approached Jadrich to stand closely in front of him, her gaze set on a level with his own. Her eyes were very dark, in the manner of the Cranstonians, piercing and unyielding.
"You deem me wise. And perhaps someday you'll recite a poem or sing a song befitting the wisdom of which you speak, even in this very hall." She gestured around her with a sweeping hand, before returning her gaze to Jadrich.
"Or perhaps you'll curse my name upon the haunted fields of Wootmerry, for that is where you are headed."

Dereth stood abruptly with his usual disregard for mannors. In the wild, he had no need for politeness, and it shone through here. He spoke between sips of his drink and incoherent sounds. "What this chatter be about haunted fields and all this...i be knowing a thing or two about haunted things, and there is always something causing it....a sword usually sorts out all that haunted rubbish. You be telling us why we going there for you?" Dereth looked back at Nightion, apparently sharing his current view-point as self-gain before that of the group. Dereth scanned the eyes of his companions after asking, hoping to appraise how they felt on the topic...His eyes caught a figure in the corner, and figured it was the elf-mage she spoke of...must be a quiet type, or possibly asleep. Dereth decided to poke the mage with his sword while waiting for the lady to form a respone.

"Perhaps, one day, m'lady, indeed I will sing such a song." Jadrich smiled broadly not indicating which song it was that he might sing.
"Haunted Forest of Wootmerry? Sounds like an enchanting place. I was thinking of vacationing there, but low and behold I hear it's best to visit it in the Spring when the ghosts are in full bloom."
Jadrich paused to shine another toothy grin.
"Do go on, m'lady. I'd be willing to bet that you're not sending us on a vacation. What matters of importance do you have in Wootmerry for us to fulfill?"

"Stop hitting on the wench jadrich, there will be time for that latter...She was about to answer my question i do believe...werent you woman?" Dereth obviously did not like this change of pace from jadrich, as he was dead-set on seeking the information he required. Little did he know, due to his lack of intelligence, was that Jadrich was slowly reaching the same topic with quite a few more mannors involved.

Jadrich laughed heartily, before shooting a hard glance at Dereth.
"Good, neighbor. You confuse my etiquette with affection. You are speaking to a Lady of Cranston. I'd remind you," Jadrich turned his glance to Nightion, "and you . . . of her station and that she should be accorded the respect that her ladyship provides her. "Lady of crestine, or frastone, or whatever, she should learn to answer a man when he asks a question. If i had ever been with a woman, i would have taught her mannors all right. She raised her hand slightly, and the two men-at-arms stepped forward, hands upon the hilts of their longswords. "Wootmerry hath not the 'rewards' that I will render if you persist in speaking to me in that manner. Sit down now, and shut your mouth."

06-20-2004, 08:19 PM
"Good neighbor, I will take your admittance that you have never been with a woman as further indication that you should bite your tongue for the moment. As for who you trust, that is up to you. I will not better you with blades, that is by all means certain. However, each man has his own strengths and weaknesses. If you trust yourself and your instincts, then see how the Lady reacts to your spittle as opposed to mine. My weapon of choice is my words. If you want to make no money on this expedition or get tossed from it, please continue to insult the lady. However, if you'd like for us all to secure a fair contract for our services. Looking up from his cup, that he appeared lost in, Brayden smiles as he notices the beauty, and demeanor of the Lady.
Obviously she is used to getting what she wants when she wants, and hopefully, a scoundrel such as himself, might get lucky.
Smiling he arises. "Lady, obviously you have been impressed with something each of us brings to the table, and I for one know where my place here is in the party. I for one, am anxious to move on, as the faster we are done, the faster I am able to move forward with my other enterprises."

Showing obvious displeasure over the comments of the lady, Dereth sat down and decided to be quiet for a little while. This act had won his silence, and despite not admitting it, it had gained her a glimmer of respect...something he did not give out lightly.

Turning back to the Lady with a noticeable exhale.
"My Lady, please do continue. My apologies for the interruption."
Reod Dai turned around when he heard the voice of Lady Del Var. He moved to a position behind the others, but in clear site of Lady Del Var. There was no need for an introduction. Both figures knew each other well.
Reod listened to the small battle of words between Dereth and Jadrich. When it was over, he turned his attention to Lady Del Var again. He was more than thankful to go anywhere she needed him.

Nightion cared little for trying to impress the Lady Del Var, he would respect her of course, but he had his own reasons for wanting to know what gains would come of this expedition. Upon hearing where the Lady intended to send them, he rose to his feet.
"The forrests of Wootberry is not to be taken lightly. There are spirits and gouls that have layed claim to them for thousands of years, it is not a place where a group goes for a comfortable stroll. If we go there, the reason must be just and of utmost importance. I recognize you are wise, and I hope your answer will suffice this course of action.

After a long, penetrating look at the haughty Dereth, Lady Del Var turned her gaze slowly, cat-like, to each of the others. Her head turned but little as her eyes paused on each of the adventurers in silent consideration. Finally, her lips pursed and eyes narrowed upon the form of the Rhyllan ranger, Nightion.
"Indeed, an utmost importance. As our Azaran friend has noted, you each have been chosen for your particular skills. You all have talents, which will hopefully help convey this expedition to its successful conclusion. But enough of this posturing! Wootmerry is not a place for anything but caution and sense of purpose. If you spar amongst yourselves you are doomed to fail, and that benefits no one."
She fell silent for a moment, walking in a slow semi-circle around the gathered men. She halted her step in front of a massive candle-holder, and reached out to tip her little finger in a dribble of wax. She smiled at some inner jest, and then turned again to the gathering. With dramatic effect, she pulled a piece of parchment from her sleeve, and held it forth.
"I've acquired something of great interest, gentlemen," she said smugly, and the look on her face spoke volumes of its worth.

"My Lady, if I might . . . " Jadrich reached for the parchment slowly trying to detect if she was indeed offering it up to the group for their perusal.

With a quick movement of her hand, Lady Del Var withdrew the parchment a bit further from Jadrich’s extended grasp, as a mother might pull a sugared treat back from a petulant child. Her eyes suggested this was a teasing move more than anything, however.
“Not yet, Jadrich, not yet. A few further words of explanation first,” she said, pausing for effect. “You all no doubt have heard of the ancient Javadan empire, and the spawn of it who migrated to what we now know as Wootmerry. Much was lost in the devastation that was wrought upon that land long ago…blood and stone and wood and memory. You Rhyllans may recall the War of the North in your histories, as well as its cataclysmic conclusion.”
She focused her gaze momentarily upon Nightion, then continued, holding forth the parchment once again. “Ancient references to a powerful Javadan wizard are written upon this. As is a map…which will lead you deep into Wootmerry.”
Slowly she held out the parchment to Jadrich.
“Your expedition will follow the map to its objective. You will investigate what is indicated, and – most importantly – you will carry away what magical artifacts you find there. I am not concerned with other mundane forms of treasure, which are yours to loot and divide as you see fit. But I will have the magical plunder…as well as all candles. And be forewarned: I will know what you encounter, what you take, and what you leave. I hope you take my meaning.”
“One other thing…there will be others. Do not let them interfere, or win out in the hunt for these sites. If need be, kill them.”
Raven Hawk

Jadrich gracefully took the parchment from the Lady's hand, studied it briefly, then handed it back to Nightion.
"I believe that you would be better suited to be the caretaker and interpreter of this object. If you would oblige us to be the keeper of such an important document, I would be grateful."
Jadrich smiled at Nightion then turned back to the Lady.

There are certain supplies and expenses that my companions and I may need to acquire prior to our journey. Although the promise of treasure is exciting, it does not pay for our current needs. We would beg of you that if you would like to see this expedition succeed that you forward us a stipend that would cover our costs until profits come in. Would you do us this small favor, m'lady?"

"Well, loot and plunder, not a bad campaign. But of course, if magic is involved, it's gonna be bad."
Brayden smiled to the others. "Well then Gentlemen, let's get on with it. Oh, and if we bring a mute mage with us, things are going to be awfully troublesome." He then laughs a little as the one person in the room who has yet to speak, is the one Cranstonian.

Nightion carefully accpeted the parchment form Jadrich, his eyes intensely scanned the markings on it...
"This is indeed ancient .....I cannot even begin to tell you the translation"
..
Reod only knew rumors of Wootmerry. Despite the name, it conjured up visions of evil. He had never been a foot inside the Wootmerry realm, and had secretly hoped to stay that way. Already a troubled soul, Reod looked a little bit more worried. He was determined to find out some facts about Wootmerry. He tried hard not to appear worried as he spoke.
"I've never been to Wootmerry, but I hear it's not for the faint of heart. What more can any of you tell us about this forest?"

Surprisingly, it was one of Lady Del Var’s swordsmen who answered. His voice was rough and gravelly, but even through this the emotion in his voice was keen.
“It is not a mere forest. It is the ruins of a devastated kingdom, possessed by all manner of foul creatures, magicks, and spirits. Crazed hill people are scattered about its lands, gibbering like madmen by day and screaming like banshees at night. Strange magical sights and sounds enchant the night skies over Wootmerry. It is a cursed place.”

"Crazed hill people? Foul creatures? Spirits? Magicks?" Jadrich says with fein confusion, but subconsciously he hears the ringing of gold coins filling his purse. "M'Lady, with all due respect, it is established that this is a very dangerous place. Can we at least agree upon that? Good. Also, I understand that time is of the essence. The sooner that you can obtain the magical devices and candles, the better for you, right? Then why do we sit around and tell ghost stories? Our time would be better spent finalizing the contract."
Jadrich paused for a moment to look around, noticing that he might be pushing the contract issue a little too hard. Jadrich proceeded, nonetheless.
"Let me offer up some terms for you to consider. First, as a group we get a 500 gold piece stipend prior to leaving to cover expenses. Second, those of us who do not have horses are provided with horses for the journey. Third we are provided with two pack horses or pack mules. Fourth, we are guaranteed a flat some of 3000 gold pieces for completing the expedition. Finally, as stated previously we return all captured magical items and candles to you, yet we get to keep any of the monetary spoils."
Jadrich paused to read the Lady's reaction to his words but could gather no insight. Jadrich proceeded, nonetheless.
"Mind you, m'lady, that we are risking our lives over meaningless magical objects and a few wax candles. This Wootmerry is a dangerous place. I would think it wise that you give us cause to take up this adventure as well as cause, other than your wrath, to return with whatever spoils we may garner. I am but a humble barkeep and businessman, m'lady. And though I wish to serve you, know also that I wish to profit as I'm sure my companions do, with the exception of perhaps Reod Dai and the mute mage."
Jadrich paused again, briefly knowing that his voice was droning in the ears of all of those around him. Jadrich proceeded, nonetheless.
"You know what kind of men we are, m'lady. We are fair men of our word, who will honor a fair contract. Yet it is also to be said that we are mostly the type that would not honor an unfair contract. Let us squabble over this issue no more and agree to terms so that we may be on our way."
With that Jadrich halted his speech, knowing his offer to be decent. Imploring with his eyes that the Lady respond with a fair counter offer if she did not accept the terms that he provided.

Dereth had felt his silence had lasted long enough. He felt that a vocal support of his to Jadrich would do no help at the current time due to his little argument over Lady del var, but there was still information he wanted to know. "Lady, would you care to answer a few more of my questions...im sure you are someone that understands how valuable proper information can be at crucial moments. Would you care to tell us how these candels relate to the magic or even the mage. Will he be hostile to us, and what of these other adventurers you speak of. Will they be hostile, and if so what are our orders in relation to them?" Dereth wanted to know the details of what enemies they would face, and left the non-combat details to the others.

Nodding a bit impatiently, Lady Del Var glanced from Jadrich to the ground and back again as the Scallite spoke.
“Yes, yes, of course. I was coming to the matter of supplies and recompense. First, I will be equipping the expedition within the capabilities of this keep’s armory, stable, storeroom, and kitchen. Fret not, you will have your pick of the standard weaponry, the horses and pack animals you requested, and what basic food and supplies you will need. I expect the animals returned, though you may keep the rest.”
She then reached into a small black velvet pouch at her waist, and drew out a handful of sizable gems. The colors varied – orange, red, green, and black at first appearance – but they were all polished and finely cut. She rolled them in her hand like dice, watching them intently, and then looked up to gaze about the room.
“As for your rewards…that will depend upon the success of the venture, gentlemen. Return empty-handed and I will send you on your respective ways with a small purse of coins, enough that your time is well-spent but not so satisfying as to encourage sloth and poor effort. Return here laden with what I seek, and in addition I will present you with a selection of these fine jewels. Valuable, indeed, upon their own beauty and the avarice of men. Pawn them for gold if you wish, but I will undertake to enchant them for you within my powers, if you so choose.”
A moment’s pause to gauge the effect of her words, and then Lady Del Var turned to the Rhyllan warrior Dereth.
“Ah, so you’ve found a more well-mannered tongue, sir! Excellent. As to the mage, ancient lore tells of great mystical energy derived from candles crafted by his hand. Powers enhanced, magicks engendered, creatures imbued…but such have never been found, to my knowledge. He was thought slain in the War of the North, if not in the religious strife that tore the Javadan Empire apart prior to that. Were this wizard to still exist…”
Her voice trailed off as she pondered this possibility, and then she focused again on the questions before her. “Our old friends the Prytians are rival claimants to this prospective treasure. They have a zealous passion for this variety of artifact which goes beyond my own mere sense of acquisition. Were you to encounter them, I would expect nothing less than a murderous response. I will leave it to your own imagination what self-preserving actions might be necessary.”
At that she smiled sweetly.

As the Lady produced the colorful gems, it was hard not to notice Jadrich's head following them about as her hand moved that contained the gems. He almost appeared as a house cat stalking a bird which was beyond his reach. As he tried to gauge the value of the gems, he was partially def to the Lady's words regarding the Wizard. Yet he tuned back in when she mentioned the Javadan Empire. His people had a history with the Javadan's. Now he wished that he had paid more attention during his schooling when the marm was talking about the Javadan Empire and their relations with the Scallites.
As for the contract, Jadrich felt comfortable with how the Lady would outfit them for their journey, but as always was wary about actual values and solid numbers. Jadrich was obviously more concerned with the values of the gems than the thought of running into a Prytian artifact expedition. Were the gems in fact worth him risking his life? What kind of enchantments could she put on them?

From the back of the room, the robed figure of the Cranstonian mage Xypheus finally stepped forward. The hood on his gray robe concealed some of his features, but his pallid skin and slender, deft hands betrayed his identity as an elf. Though the robes made it difficult to guage his size, it was easy to see there wasn't much to him, and his light step belied an innate quickness. Not carrying the stereotypical staff that most of his 'brethren' were with, he carried no apparent weapon--however the robes could conceal much under their folds. His silence up to this point spoke volumes about his character, and though he had not revealed much about his character, astute observers would have noticed an almost fiendish glow to his Amber eyes upon Lady Del Var's mention of enchanted items and candles. Though the final mention of enchanted jewels seemed to interest him less than most, his curiosity was indeed piqued.
"Fools...do not underestimate the power of Javadan magic. These candles are reputed to have tremendous power...rumors speak of such that burn everlasting, or those whose scent could sway nations. If one such as the Javadan Mage of the Ruins of Wootmerry were still alive...well, he would be a force to be reckoned with, for certain."
Xypheus, a mage whose history was shrouded in mystery [editor's note: ugh, sorry about that one :)] ...not much was known about him. Still early in his career, and yet to have made a name for himself it was unlikely that any had heard of his studies or deeds.
"Indeed, fair lady, you will retain ALL magical items upon our return? Surely not everything will be of interest to you...and it should be obvious that mere mundane treasure is not of utmost importance to me."

Lady Del Var began to chuckle, and it sounded as if she was genuinely amused. Aware of Jadrich’s focused attention – the gems appeared to be of great worth - she clutched the jewels tightly in her fist and held them out toward the dour elf.
“What? A Cranstonian elf-mage not interested in such treasures as these?” she asked loudly, feigning outrage but with a broad smile aimed at the others. With a deliberate slow hand she placed the gems back in their pouch, then raised her eyes to Xypheus. “You needn’t worry, my friend. I selected you for this with good reason. We birds of a like feather will find fair adjudication of any magical relics. Trust me in that. But I must see them all first.”
Raven Hawk

"By the Gods of Scalla! Who said that?" Jadrich said as he flinched startled from the voice, breaking his concentration on the gems.
Jadrich paused and allowed the mage to speak. He was curious about this fellow. How could he stay so silent for so long. Silence was a concept that Jadrich was not entirely comfortable with himself, which made the elf even more mysterious to him.
Reod knew he had been chosen for this "quest" for more than one reason. He supplied fighting ability all right, but it would also be his job to make sure the party returned all the magical items as well. He cared not for the promised treasure, he would return here all the same.
What Reod wasn't sure of, was if the rest of the party knew of his allegiance to Lady Del Var. Certainly, Lady Del Var hadn't shown any favoritism the veteran warrior to this point. Perhaps there was a reason behind it.

"Well, m'lady, it seems that we have struck an accord. As I understand it, and please do confirm me with for my accounting skills may not be the best around, our terms are as follows:
1) The Lady will outfit our company with supplies and horses at the start of our expedition. All is ours to keep save the animals, which will be returned to the property of the Lady at the conclusion of our expedition.
2) All non-magical loot acquired during the expedition will be owned entirely by the company.
3) All magical loot that is acquired during the expedition will be returned to the Lady upon the conclusion of the expedition. At this point, the Lady will select what items she desires; all items if she sees fit. Any items that she does not desire will return to the possesion of the company to be divided amongst the company in a way that we see proper.
4) An additional reward of cash, gems, or enchanted gems will be provided to the company at the conclusion of the expedition based on the company's performance. The Lady may elect not to reward the company if she is dissatisfied with what the company's endeavors yield to her. Conversely, she may grant an appropriate reward as she sees fit.
Do I have my understandings correct, m'lady?"

"Oh ho, my lady," Xypheus laughed mirthlessly, "disinterest is definitely not my opinion on your gems, magical or otherwise. It is simply that mentioned in the same breath as the magical treasures of the ruins of Wootmerry that they lose some of their appeal." The crooked, nearly evil grin remained on the mage's face as he continued. "That you must see the items is fair enough; we ARE at your bidding, after all. Know that you have the services of Xypheus to the full extent of his abilities on your 'quest,' Necromancer." With a slight bow, not quite mocking, Xypheus turned his attention to some of his companions. "As for you, Bard, I will be content to let you do the talking...you seem to enjoy the sound of your own voice enough."

Abandoning his ealier pretense of silence, Xypheus began showing his inquisitive nature.
"You there, swordsman," quoth Xypheus, indicating the Lady's swordsman who had spoken up earlier. "You speak as if from experience...what brought you to Wootmerry, and do you have anything more than vague mention of haunts and spooks to tell us? If we are to be leaving soon, and I daresay it has been long enough dawdling here, we should know all that we can before our departure."

Interesting that Jadrich has so readily stepped to the fore, thought Lady Del Var, as she listened to his interpretation of the arrangement. It will be worth noting whether that holds true throughout the expedition.
She smiled warmly when he finally concluded. “Such a merchant you are, Jadrich! Indeed, you are mostly correct. I would clarify only that perhaps Xypheus merits first refusal over the magical relics which I do not retain, at the expense of a share in the other coin and treasure. And you can rest assured that I will pay you all in some minimal capacity for your efforts, as long as you do not flee or otherwise demonstrate cowardly or treacherous behavior.”
As Xypheus and Jadrich exchanged remarks, Lady Del Var silently observed the Rhyllans, who seemed strangely reticent. These thoughts scattered, however, with the elf’s question to her man-at-arms concerning Wootmerry. The swordsman, a scarred and scruffy veteran of many years’ service, turned a questioning eye to her, and she nodded her consent for him to answer.
“Once, we pursued raiders from the hills deep into their lands. We had an easy track to follow, and we rode hard after them all day with little care for the surroundings. But soon enough we realized…‘round here you grow up and live with stories of Wootmerry, but ‘tis rare when someone has actually been. Well, the land looked normal enough. But the senses began to lie, if you follow my meaning. We sees things that make no sense, and hears things…”
The fighter paused to lick his lips. “…hears things you’ve never heard before. Animal sounds, maybe. Screaming that starts up, then’s gone. Apparitions acting out things, like players on a stage. Flashes of light.”
He swallowed, clearly uncomfortable with the recollection. “Trust nothing, but be aware of everything. That’s what I tell you.”

"Excellent! Then we do agree!" Jadrich exclaims looking around at his fellows, "If that is acceptable to all here of course, aye?" Jadrich paused only momentarily to look for indications of objection before he moved on.
"As for how we divide our spoils, we will go ahead and determine the equity in that. We can discuss that on the road as we make our way to Wootmerry. I'm sure that if certain parties would like to exchange their stake in gold for items, we can accomodate that. And although, I desire to not make waste of time, I do wonder if you might answer me one question, m'lady."
Jadrich paused a moment for the drama.
"These rival claimants that you had mentioned from Prytia . . . " Jadrich amazed himself that he had heard any of this portion over the visual noise of the sparkling gems, ". . . have you any knowledge of who Prytia sends to lay their claim to the artifact? Since you did mention, that you knew that there would be rivals, I wonder if there might be a way that you could divine the names of our comptetitors if you do not already know them. Also, any special talents that they might possess would be helpful as well."

"Good Lady, how you read my mind," grinned Xypheus, for the first time in true amusement. "First right of refusal is a generous gesture that will not go unnoticed." Xypheus then altered his tack and addressed the motley group of adventurers, bound towards the same fate for at least a short time. "Barkeep, while my thirst for knowledge and information knows no bounds, I am certain that men of our ability have nothing to fear from a mere rival group of adventurers. Wouldn't you agree, Rhyllans? And surely an Azaran pirate fears no land-walker?" These last questions were delivered in an almost challenging fashion...it was becoming clear that Xypheus was anxious to get on the road.

"A wise man once said, 'You don't have to fear something for it to be able to kill you.'" Jadrich said with a smile. "There is no doubt that the overall prowess of all here, myself excluded, is well more than enough to take care of a ragtag bunch of Prytians . . ."
Jadrich once again paused for the drama he so delightfully craved.
"Have you ever heard of a Yemixian Tree Frog? Most Westerners have not. This frog looks like a miniature version of your standard western frog with a slightly brighter color pattern. It looks tiny and it looks harmless . . . but don't you go picking it up. The slightest contact against exposed skin will send the handler to the undertaker. Let's not let our pride get us killed."
"Although I, too, wish to be moving on, Mage. We should take the opportunity to learn what we can about what may be the snake to our mongoose."
And with a chuckle he continued. "And at some point a proper introduction should be made, lest we call each other by our respective professions for the duration of the trip."
With a smile and a wink to Xypheus, Jadrich turned back to the Lady to hear her response.

For the first time in the interview, Lady Del Var seemed a bit uncertain of her answer. She hesitated to reply, and looked down to study the myriad rings on her fingers as she did so. Finally, she replied to Jadrich.
“In truth, I do not know the mettle of what rivals you might encounter. I do know, however, that the Prytian lord who is involved in this matter is an uncompromising man of fervent beliefs. I strongly doubt he will take this matter lightly…be on your guard.”
With that, the lady moved as of to depart the room. “Gentlemen, the hour of your departure creeps ever closer, and there is much preparation to undertake. My subordinates will tend to your needs in the areas we discussed; gather your packs, and you will find them and the necessary animals awaiting you in the stable in the morning. "And that Prytian lord's name would be . . . " Jadrich smiled trying to draw the information from the Lady. Although he hoped that it wouldn't come to that, he figured that it might be nice to know where the loot was going if perchance they did not get to the items first.

Later that evening . . .
"I have submitted my list to the Lady and have included 4 weeks worth of rations for all, horse feed enough to stay us through half a week of not stabling our horses, and 10g per person for miscellaneous expenses such as food and lodging. I, by no means, am guaranteeing that the Lady will give us the money up front, but I thought I would ask anyways. If any of this seems insufficient, please let me know and I will request more."
Jadrich looked specifically at Nightion for feedback on the amounts that he requested. Who would know better how to travel than a ranger?
"In addition gentlemen, I would suggest that you each request a bedroll and your own waterskins. A tent, perhaps if you fear the rain. Most likely we'll be spending some nights on our backs in the wilderness. I have also requested rope, but do not let that hinder your own requests. You can never have too much rope. "Good gentlemen, do we have anybody in our party here who is versed in medicine and the healing arts? I have been know to dabble a bit, but I am far from expert. My usual patients require scarcely more than a wiff of smelling salts and a boot in the arse."

"Gentlemen . . . an old Rhyllan song I think you'll enjoy . . ."
Jadrich hummed out the melody, then began to sing . . .
"As I was walking all alane,
I heard twa corbies making a mane;
The tane unto the t'other say,
'Where shall we gang and dine to-day,
Where shall we gang and dine to-day?'
'In behint yon auld fail dyke,
I wot there lies a new slain knight;
And naebody kens that he lies there,
But his hawk, his hound, and lady fair,
His hawk, his hound, and lady fair.
'His hound is to the hunting gane,
His hawk to fetch the wild-fowl hame,
His lady 'a ta'en another mate,
So we may make our dinner sweet,
We may make our dinner sweet.
'Ye'll sit on his white hause-bane,
And I'll pike out his bonny blue een;
Wi ae lock o his golden hair
We'll theek our nest when it grows bare,
We'll theek our nest when it grows bare.'
'Mony a one for him makes mane,
But nane shall ken where he is gane;
Oer his white banes, when they are bare,
The wind sail blow for evennair,
The wind sail blow for evennair.'
Jadrich hummed out another verse of the melody, then stopped and smiled.
"Tomorrow, Gentlemen, we head off on a quest of uncertainty. It is obvious that we will face many perils on our way. But to overcome those perils, those obstacles, will lead us to great things. We know that the forests of Wootmerry hold hideous things. We know that the Prytians will be after our prize. Yet we will succeed, gentleman. It is our fate. Let us drink to our coming fortune."
He poured out some more wine filling everybodies glasses full.
"'A toast!" Jadrich said raising his glass, "Tis good fortune that brought us together, Gentlemen. And like the twa corbies, may we feast on the misfortune of our foes."
Jadrich raises his glass and drinks down all that the cup holds.
Reod lifted the cup, paused for a moment to think about what may lie ahead, "Here, here!"

Not really...i got scolded by WSU for being too rude and mean, so i have to be nice at times now...my character is will be back to his old self in no-time. Lets just say he was sick when he said that ;)
Good. Grumpy and uncouth seem to fit Dereth a little better. :D

Just to add a bit of clarification, Dereth's rudeness was a fast track for a drastic career change (i.e., subject for Lady Del Var's next undead spell test). I asked blade6119 to scale it back because it was inappropriate for the setting. Grumpy and uncouth is one thing; fatally rude is another. ;)
FYI, I think we'll continue with the in-character banter through the holiday weekend, then hit the expedition trail early next week.

No doubt, Coug. I understand the difference. The problem with being fatally rude is:
It's fatal.
Sounds like a good plan for the weekend. I'll be gone for a little, so hitting the trail on Monday evening would work fine for me.

Sorry guys...been a hectic sort of week. I've been up since 9:30 AM yesterday morning, and I did nothing but move in yesterday. Last night, I was writing a paper on Livy and the Early History of Rome...it was exciting times, let me tell you :)
The light at the end of the tunnel? While I've been at class all day today, the cable internet has *supposedly* (knock on wood) connected, and my roommates were *supposed* to clean up the front room. On top of that, the paper I was supposed to turn in tomorrow has been postponed until next Tuesday, so I'm a happy camper now :)

Jadrich started packing his gear getting ready for an early start the next morning. Despite his unshaven appearance, Jadrich seemed to be a tidy person. He was organized, at least.
"Rope? Check. Flint? Check." Jadrich read down a list and checked it against all of his items. The list seemed to be fairly close to what he had laid out on the bed before him. There was one item missing, that by the shifting in his eyes, you could tell that Jadrich was uncomfortable without. A nervous hand felt down to the empty sheath tucked into his belt.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The room's attention turned to the door. It was one of the Lady's men-at-arms with a cart in tow. On the cart were a bunch of weapons.
"The Lady said that I might return them to you, so you might ready them for your trip," the man-at-arms said before turning and walking out of the room again.
Jadrich nearly sprang for the cart and found what his sheath had been missing: his kukri. This odd shaped dagger bent forward from the handle and a blade that widened toward its tip. One could imagine that it was just as useful to use it in a chopping motion as well as a slicing motion. The weapon appeared to be a miniature version of a weapon that was favored by Scallite horsemen used to hamstring horses in battle. Though not overly ornate, the kukri did have inlaid ivory work on its mahogany handle.
Jadrich picked up the kukri and mumbled a few words of what appeared to be Scallite prayer. Then unexpectedly, Jadrich slid his sleeve up his arm and cut the top of his left forearm with the blade allowing some blood to exit the tiny wound. From the scarring near the cut, it appears that this was not the first time this action had been performed. He then wiped the blade clean on the thigh of his pants and sheathed the odd dagger.
Next, Jadrich turned his attention to a handful of throwing knives that were on the cart as well. Jadrich picked up the seven knives and began sheathing them in different places about his body. By the grin on his face, you would be certain that the Lady's guards did not find all of the blades that he had on him. Before sheathing the last three, he began juggling them for a bit. After a brief show of juggling, Jadrich began to sheath the final three knives, picking them from the air sliding them into an appropriate sheath amidst the juggling.
"Well, Gentlemen. I feel much better now," he said with his trademark grin.

"I'm afraid I know more about causing injury than healing injury. I would be of little use in matters of injury and healing," said Xypheus. "As for my own equipment, I always keep a flint & steel and whetstone nearby...and as I fancy myself to be handy with a rod & line, I have requested a few fishhooks in case we happen to find a pond or two along the way. As I am eager to get started, I will now take my leave, and rest up for the journey ahead." And with that, Xypheus laid down on the nearest cot and went to sleep.
About gear...I requested some stuff for me, but it seems like we have a good variety of goods between all of us now. Between Jadrich and Nightion, we have tons of rope, and maybe I can fish us a little dinner here and there (note - I'm not extra proficient in fishing, as far as I know...just a hobby I'm trying to roleplay my character into). Can anyone else think of anything we might be missing that we could really use?

The only thing that I can think of is a spyglass. I know that they are quite expensive, so Jadrich is working on getting one on loan from the Lady. It would be quite useful. Other than that, perhaps a shovel? You never know when you are going to need one of those.

Alone in her chambers and well beyond the chatter of the adventurers, Lady Del Var reflected upon the matters at hand.
She would accede to most of their requests. Certainly some were simple enough…banded armor and longsword for the hot-headed Rhyllan, as well as a shield in the pattern of her own noble house, no less: a wheeling flight of ravens against a full, bright yellow moon. The various traveling supplies had already been gathered.
As for Jadrich’s particular needs…well, she would not advance as much gold as the avaricious barkeep had sought, but perhaps a small amount would be in order. A mixed bag of coins, perhaps 10g in value should suffice. The savages of Wootmerry do not peddle their wares for gold.
But the spyglass was a perfect embellishment to the assortment of equipment. She had just the thing in mind. She smiled in spite of herself.
She felt confident that the party would make progress in this affair. Reod Dai, she knew, would fight to the gates of hell if need be, and would not allow things to go awry. The other two Rhyllans would follow his lead, she thought. The Azaran was his own man, but greed would carry him along. Xypheus was a Cranstonian elf-mage, and thus would surely know the penalty for any betrayal on his part. And Jadrich – whatever his innermost motivation might be – she trusted perhaps more than any of them.
She slept deeply, content that all essential preparations had been made.

Eventually the banter died out, and silence ruled the hall as the six men succumbed to sleep soon enough. Dreams or nightmares, it mattered not, for their sleep was sound. Yet the stirrings of morning came all too quickly.
“Arise, gentlemen, arise!” came the shrill call of the cook, a rather ugly woman of middle age wielding a large ladle like a sword. For good measure she banged the ladle across one of the great wooden columns in the room. “Breakfast is served! Wake up and eat!”
A great, steaming mound of flapjacks sat upon the long table, flanked by bowls of hashed beef and with a host of accouterments nearby.

After raging with a bout of depression and silence as he thought upon the forth coming expedition, Brayden finally fell asleep.
The creak of the table having food set upon it, woke him, the cooks shrilling voice, startled.
Brayden sat up, rubbing the nights sleep from his eyes, and arose, smoothing his clothing out, and pulling his shoulder length locks back into a pony tail and tying it off with a piece of braided leather he managed to pull from his pouch.
Sitting down at the table, he reached for the flapjacks, stacking them on his plate.
"Eat up everyone, for this will be the last home cooked meal for us for some time." and with mirth, he laughed at his last statement, and began to eat.

The cook, who had been squinting at the Azaran with some manner of scorn, actually laughed loudly at his bit of morning merriment.
"Aye, you're off to Wootmerry I've heard. Eat up! I doubt you'll have the pleasure of flapjacks and maple syrup out there in that wild, eh? And lest your horses up and go mad, you might not have fresh meat like that either!"
She bellowed again, and waddled off to the kitchen.

Jadrich's energetic responses seemed to be lacking this early in the morning. One could tell from the meticulous packing job that Jadrich had done, that he had been up late ensuring that everything was in order as he had specified. A packing list lay on the table with three sets of check marks next to each item. There was a slight tingle in his head from the ample glasses of wine that touched his lips the night before.
Soon enough, however, the smell of maple syrup coaxed Jadrich out of bed. He made his way over to the table and sat down across from Brayden. After pouring himself a glass of juice, Jadrich forked a stack of flapjacks that seemed larger than his stomach and moved them to his plate.
After packing away little food, Jadrich started on his favorite breakfast side dish: conversation.
"So Brayden, you mentioned that you have your own ship? What is her name and how did you come about to own such a fine vessel?" Jadrich chipped in between forkloads of flapjacks and hash.

"I am sorry, I must have misrepresented myself, you see, I would like my own ship. To many days have I travelled the seas with another man commanding me, the best I have done, was captain a wounded boat, for it's um......benefactors to a port, for repairs. I think I might have displeased said benefactors for they are the ones that gave me the scar upon my neck."
Looking off a little past Jadrich, you could clearly tell Brayden was lost in his memories, ones that obviously pained him, but snapping back into the now, Brayden slightly shaked his head, as if to rattle the bad from his head.
"Anyways, I do want to own a ship, and this qwest will finish off the money I have been saving for such an endeavor, I am going to name her Raven, she will be sleek and dark, quick, and powerful."
Brayden, stabs at another bite of flapjacks, hurriedly stuffing it into his, mouth, chewing, he speaks with mouthful, a muffled sound, but you can hear it well enough.
"Jadrich, why are you not behind the Bar anymore?"
Raven Hawk
07-07-2004, 08:33 AM
"Nay, friend, you probably didn't misrepresent yourself. My head is often too filled with my own words, that I don't hear the words of others as well as I hear my own," Jadrich said smiling. "'Raven' is a wonderful name for a ship and by the looks of things," Jadrich motions to a shield bearing the Lady's crest, "I'd think that the Lady would approve as well."
Jadrich allowed Brayden a moment to reminisce, taking in another forkload of hash and a sip of juice.
"As for my own endeavors . . . I used to run a tavern in Filia's capital . . . Such a city was filled with Lords, Ladies, Politicians and the like. It was a prime spot to own a tavern and . . . umm . . . how do I put this . . . broker information. However, it appears as though I offended one of the local magistrates grievously, who in turn decided to try to put me out of business. I won't deny the fact that he might have been wronged, but I would have preferred that he handled the situation face to face. Instead, he used his influence to get my tavern closed down. After working the ropes at other taverns for awhile, I found that it just didn't suit my style to work for another, I need my own place. I, too, hope that the profits of this endeavor will allow me to reopen The Dragon's Wing . . . but perhaps in a different city." Jadrich smiled again. "Let us hope that this expedition is fruitful enough for us both to reclaim our lives' true desires."
Coug, I forgot the name of the Inn that I named in my write up, so I changed it to The Dragon's Wing. If I need to change that, let me know. I'd also like to know what the name of the city is that I had it in, for future reference. :)

Upon awakening, Xypheus quietly slipped off his cot and joined Brayden and Jadrich at the long breakfast table. Not much for conversation this early in the morning, he silently filled his plate and began to eat.
Reod had another night of nightmares. It caused him to turn and toss about in his sleep, but didn't cost him his rest. He was far to used to the nightmares by now.
Upon awakening, he saw the group starting to assemble for breakfast. Two were chatting away. Reod frowned. There would be plenty of time to do that later. He grabbed a plate and filled it up, eating as if this was his last meal.

Dereth had slightly woken up when the lady yelled, but he cursed her out loud and went back to sleep. The clanging of weapons of the other adventurers woke him up yet again, and despite his best attempts he could no longer return to his slumber. He rose slowly and dressed after, to many complaints and moans from the others, had slept in the nude and said he was too hot for any blankets. he entered the room that apparently was used for eating. Dereth was not accustomed to sitting at tables for meals, so he followed the lead of the others without making too much of a fuss. He listened to Brayden and Jadrich speak of their pasts with intent in hopes of understanding the men he had to accompany for quite some time it appeared. He walked back to his supplies and was quite suprised to find armor, and sword, and a magnificient shield. He did not recognize the crest, but assumed it was in response to his request. He could only assume it was very important, and would ask about it sometime in the future. He decided to get some food before they left, so he finally sat with the others at the table. He wondered if he should break into the conversation, and finally decided to interject. "Jadrich, would your experience in barkeeping prove useful in making food during our journey? And how about maybe brewing certain "diversion."

"Ahh yes . . . cooking . . . hmmm . . . Not quite a strength of mine as I had a full-time cook to prepare meals at The Dragon's Wing. And as for brewing, that isn't quite my strength either. 'Twas my job to get the customers in and take their money. Although I have dabbled in both cooking and brewing, I can by no means call myself an expert in any way. I could, however, tell you what suppliers sold good ale for cheap." Jadrich said reflecting over his career.
"And what of our heroes?" Jadrich said, changing the subject. "What stories have you two of war and great battles?" he continued looking to Reod and Dereth. "Surely there are some great deeds to tell us of."
"Jadrich, you amuse me," Reod replied, "but I suppose that's what you're aiming for. You probably know my stories better than I."
Reod cast a quick look at Dereth, who would also know most of the Reod Dai stories.
"Perhaps one of my more interesting adventures is one you may not know of," Reod told Jadrich, "I was actually involved in the battles against the Skelitik Nomads.
"This huge clan was raiding the Rhyllan province of Avanera for water and supplies. We, being the Rhyllan Guard, were brought in to put a stop to it. The Nomads were savages, and they all fought to the death.
"I was just a young lad then, but I took the opportunity to command the troops around me when a Nomad slew our captain. I killed that Nomad and led our men to victory. I rallied our men and we held off the Nomad assault on our position.
"A veteran took the post but I was noted for my bravery in battle. Those battles helped propel me through the ranks of the Rhyllan Guard, though many have no idea that was why."

"As i mentioned earlier, I grew up in the war-torn border towns of Rhylla. When i was but a boy I exemplfied a talent for killing. It first happened when he was 11 and killed 40 men with only a dagger, single handily turning the tide of the Rhyllan Civil War on the fields of Carellia. It was about 13 years ago that this battle occured. I was a student of arms for the great empire of Rhylla at the time, when a rather large religous sect decided that they could no longer tolerate our outlandish ideas about certain religious topics, such as warriors with honor going to a great hall and meeting with ancestors(or a field, our nation's various groups differ on this matter) The leader was a man by the name of Jans Hestokigan. He was a mentor of mine when i was younger, but had dissapeared without telloing us anything. They attacked us by complete suprise...i mean, who expects their own citizens to starts killing your other citizens. They had taken over most of the country, including out capital of Nastoria. The Rhyllan royal family retreated into the countryside, and eventually found themselves at my military academy. The rebels came hard and fast, and overwhelmed our lines. After taking down quite a few, we retreated into the inner walls. After a brief seige, they busted down the door and then hell broke loose. We were but young boys up against men twice our size. I watched as my friends were slaughtered, and much of what came next was a blur of rage. I was told afterwards that i stoof outside the door to the room the royal fmaily was in, and single-hadidly held off the Jinkaran rebels long enough for our leaders and wounded to escape out a secret passage. Left alone, i had to battle my way through their lines to escape, and in the process of doing so i killed my former mentor Hestokigan. I was awarded many titles and awards for this, but the shame of killing my mentor, even if it was just, was too unbearable. I left to live in the wilderness and vowed never to kill again." Dereth fought not to show emotion, despite this being the most traumtic day of his life. Dereth knew what men of this nature felt about emotion, especially from him after his past discussions and actions. "I also recieved this scar on my neck from the Fire Dragon of the Rhyllan Ice Mountains. The dragon had built its next on top of these cliffs that must have reached all the way up to the heavens! It had terrorized the countryside long enough when i made my home in the woods. I gathered a group of farmers, and using the lack behidn the cliffs snuck up of the monster. Knowing we didnt have enough fire to melt the mountain, or enough power to bring the dragon out of the air, we devised a plan to make it come to us. We built a massive hay "nest" and took it with us. When we came close, it attacked us in all its fury. We lit the fake nest on fire, and as predicted the dumb animal thought we had its own nest. It lowered to ground level to protect its nest and young ones we found later. With it on the earth, we hit it with everything we had. It claws caught my neck and cut me badly, but i still managed to climb onto its back. With this, it took off to shake me, but i continued holding on and attacking. After what seemed like an eternity, i managed a critical blow and brought the beast down. We were proclaimed as heroes of the wilderness, but i did not think anyone in the main cities knew of it. Shortly after though, i recieved word of Lady Del Vars invitation, and headed here. Whether it was my saving of the Royal Family or the slaying of the fiercest monster this side of Cranstone, i do not know what got me here. But i damn well know i aint leaving till i get some more food! Woman, bring me more, for now we feast like kings!"

"Hah! Dereth, you tell a good story! Perhaps there is a future in barkeeping for you," Jadrich said with a wink. "As for my purpose here, I can only suspect that it is to have some curbside appeal. The gods of Scalla know that this group is none too pretty in appearance nor manner . . ." Jadrich let out a hardy laugh.
Jadrich continued, "In truth, though, Dereth. I would be willing to bet that I can utilize my many skills in many ways during the trip. I prove to be a good distraction to those we may want to distract. My weaponry skills can best described as monstrously inadequate. I hope that you can trust that the rest of my skills can make up for such shortcomings."
Jadrich noticed as Nightion finally joined the group at the table.
"Now that we are all here, I'd like to discuss a little strategy and see what everybody thinks. Let me give a couple options for strategy that we might consider . . .
First, since time is of the essence, we can dash off and hope that our orienteering, fighting, and survival skills are better than the Prytian groups so that we may get the artifacts prior to them. This bears the risk of jumping too quickly into the unknown and henceforth dealing with things that we are not ready to deal with. Yet this bears the reward of being the most profitable option.
Another option might be to stalk the Prytians and let them ease the path, allowing us overcome them when they are weak from battle. This has the advantage of reducing the risk of the Prtyians power, but increasing the risk that they get to the artifacts before we do.
Finally the last option that I offer is that we discover who these Prytians are and wait for them to return to their Lord with the items. At that point we can ambush them and steal the booty. The risk here is that they have powerful items from the journey that can detect or beat our ambush. Yet, we risk only one battle, one which we will be well prepared for.
These are obviously not the only three options and I would hear more if any of you have suggestions. Please feel free to weigh in on these ideas or ideas of your own," Jadrich concluded, diving back into his plate of flapjacks.

“Such a conversant bunch,” said Lady Del Var, who had approached quietly and unannounced to within earshot. “And hungry, too. You must be away very soon or the Rhyllans alone will surely eat us out of our own keep. Dereth, you have a flair for fanciful drama. But I trust the armor and weaponry suits you? And Jadrich, your comments on strategy are duly noted, but I must insist, for my own avaricious purposes, that you visit the site noted on the scroll map as quickly as you can. We cannot assume anything about the Prytians, and it’s possible they may not even survive the journey. Were that to happen, you would wait on them until the end of time…unless you intend to ambush them in the pits of hell, in which case my selections for this expedition may have been a bit inappropriate.”
Though her tone remained rather flat, a gleam of humor tinted her eyes. She raised upon the table a small, elongated wooden case, finely polished and exquisitely carved with runes across the outside. Lady Del Var’s gaze flickered first to Xypheus, and then to Jadrich as she opened the case and produced a fine spyglass, which she proffered to the Scallite barkeep.
“You asked for such, did you not? This is a prized possession…I trust in your good faith to return it to me undamaged.”

"Thank you, m'lady," Jadrich said in a half-bow as he accepted the precious gift from Lady Del Var.
"I will take your advice regarding our strategy to heart. I, too, had suspicions that this journey may be too harsh to expect the Prytians to be successful in their quest. Yet, I offered it up as an option, nonetheless. And, if we don't get our arses in gear soon, it may be the only option that we have," Jadrich stated with a smile and a tone of urgency.
"Yet, I do not wish to dismiss any risk, be it from the Prytians or from Wootmerry. Forwarned is Forarmed. If we dash off to the location on the map, we put ourselves into the peril of the unknown. I don't like surprises unless I'm the one doing the surprising. Yet, I may have to cave to the wishes of m'lady, if that is the advice that she feels to ring true in the deepest places of her heart."

"I am interested in how you plan to find out more about the Prytians, Barkeep. Surely, if our powerful benefactor knows nothing of them save their existance, 'twould be difficult to determine their wherabouts short of a trip to Prytia ourselves, would it not? Seems to me that our best bet is to ride for Wootmerry...but not recklessly. A cautious approach would do us well."
Just out of curiosity...did anyone think to ask for a map?

07-08-2004, 02:07 PM
"Ah, yes. Good point, Mage. Determining the whereabouts and the capabilities of the Prytians would be a difficult task. I find that information is usually for sale. You'd be amazed at how much a local barkeep knows if you tip the right amount. By using that information along with the tracking wiles of Nightion, I'm sure that we could locate them in short order. However, there are other . . . quicker . . . ways," Jadrich used his patented dramatic pause again.
"Not to put m'lady's talents into question - as from reputation, I'd guess that she only dabbles in the art - but a proper Diviner could find us the proverbial needle in the haystack for the right price," said Jadrich as he shifted in his chair. "Be that as it may, I agree with your assessment, Mage. I suggest that we head for Wootmerry at a hastened pace, yet slow to a more cautious pace when we reach the borders of Wootmerry."
Jadrich turned his attention to Nightion, "Nightion, would you be able to plot a course for us to travel upon that will get us to Wootmerry in the shortest period of time? Also, it would be helpful if we could get an estimate of where our trail would cross with the most logical path for the Prytians. Forewarned. Forarmed."
Not knowing what is exactly on the map that the Lady gave us, I'd guess that it had a detailed map of Wootmerry. Otherwise, Jadrich has an assortment of maps in a map case. I'm not sure if any of these would help though, because I don't know what the assortment is. :)

Nightion knew the answer without having to look at a map, wootmerry was a place of ledgend.
"Barkeep, the easiest way is to follow it's creek that shares its name with the forrest. The way is flat and being a riverbed, it abounds with game to hunt, or fish to catch. In terms of distance, the the Highlands paths are shortest, but the way is dense with rocky hills and wasteland, the terrain is also diffcult to navigate. These things are no challenge to a Ranger, but this a group."

"Wonderful, good Nightion! It seems your expertise is paying off already. To the second part of my question, though . . . Would we expect that the Prytians would be taking the same route for any part of their journey assuming that they are leaving from Prytia? We can none vouch for their wisdom in choosing paths, but I'd like to know when they might become a threat to our expedition," Jadrich said genuinly pleased with the Ranger.
Turning his attention to a purse of ten gold pieces that the Lady Del Var had brought to them in response to his request. Jadrich looked to Reod Dai, then back to the purse.
"If nobody has any objections . . . " Jadrich said as he tossed the purse to Reod Dai, "I believe Reod should keep track of any treasures and spoils that we gain from this little expedition. He is the only one who has not made inquiry into how one was to profit from our adventure, which leads me to believe that he has other reasons for being here. Therefore, I would cast him as the most trustworthy of us all when dealing with the monies, myself included. “Very well, gentlemen, breakfast is over. It is time you were away,” said Lady Del Var.
With a silent gesture of her hand she beckoned her two men-at-arms to move forward. “Kallash and Jupp will escort you to the Cranstonian border. From there, as Nightion has suggested, the river valley will lead you deeper into the heart of Wootmerry, and the scroll map will guide you once you reach the ruin known as the Broken Gate, which is known to stand upon a ridge overlooking the river and perhaps two days ride in. The river level should be low this time of year. Horses for the six of you and two pack mules are ready in the courtyard.”
She paused to move closer to the group, walking slowly past each and meeting their gaze one at a time with an encouraging nod. Finally, after this miniature review, she turned to face them all again, and produced a weathered-looking pouch in her hand.
“If you wish to use it, a small portion of this powder mixed into your water skins will extend your stamina for the journey. Use but a pinch in each skin. There is enough for several days, I think. Well…so be it. Off with you. Be cautious but unyielding in your progress. Slay whatever opposes you, and doubt that there are any whom you would call friend in Wootmerry. Kallash, the smaller but elder of the two, moved forward toward the gate, while Jupp, a hulking youth of perhaps 20 years, grabbed the lead line of the pack mules. Both waited expectantly for the others to mount up.

Already, gents, mount up and off we go. Your order of march will be in the same order of your next posts, unless you indicate otherwise. Kallash will be leading the group to the border, with Jupp drawing up the rear with the mules.
You will all be in default “search mode” but if you want to specifically investigate or do anything in particular, let me know either be writing it into your post or by PM.
I will be awarding experience points based on your role-playing and writing. Remember, do not "power game" by writing in things which aid your character, include the responses of other characters, or otherwise advance the plot in the way the DM should.

I'm not going to be here for a while (4 hour drive up north), but I also don't want to be the second in marching order. Consider me mounted up 4th.
Xypheus eyed his mount warily...riding was obviously not his strong suit. Securing his belongings one last time, he scrambled atop his horse, then waited to allow the others to take the lead.

"Aye, Reod, it is true. Yet Death, my friend, awaits all creatures. Let's hope that he has patience enough to allow us to become old men," Jadrich jibed with a smile as he checked his pack for the last time.
Jadrich then moved around to the front of his horse and stroked its head gently, "And what is your name, beautiful?" Jadrich's nerves were a little higher than you'd suspect for a Scallite when dealing with horses. After all, Jadrich wasn't a Scallite Warrior. The warriors of his people were at home on horseback. Jadrich seemed ill at ease as he tried to gain the trust of his mount. Patting the horse on its head one last time, he lithely jumped up on its back.
"I'd suggest that we ride two by two. I'd like to think I have a good idea of what the marching order should be, but I'll defer to any who might have real experience in such matters. Nightion? Reod? Dereth?"
"Fine by me," replied Reod, "I'll suggest this."
Reod went on to suggest that he and Nightion should lead, followed by Jadrich and the Azaran. Pulling the rear would be Dereth and Xypheus.

Nightion walked up to the tall horse that was to be his, it was a beautiful brown with a white stripe running down its long head and nose. The Ranger couldn't represses his smile, gingerly he stroked its mare and thought of his own horse, left back at home, and checked over his new steed. He had been always fond of horses and of nature for that matter.
"If Reod suggestion is agreed I have no objections to riding out front. But also pheraps we should alternate at times, being on point is mentally taxing at least"
Reod hoped the group would agree to the suggestion. A fighter in front, a fighter in the back, Rhyllans at that. That alone, Reod thought, made for a strong order. The rest was just common sense to him.
Reod knew he wanted the Ranger up front. Nightion wouldn't want paired up with that blasted Azaran, what Rhyllan would? Put that Azaran with the talkative barkeep. If they could somehow keep quiet, all might be well. Reod also understood that while a mage is powerful in a way, they still need protection. Therefore, Dereth made an ample "bodyguard".
Reod wasted no time in suggesting the alternatives after Nightion spoke.
"There are other possibilities. Our barkeep and the Azaran (he said Azaran with a slight snarl) could possibly take point while Nightion and I fell back. The one person here I won't ride with is the Azaran. Plain and simple.
"I'm not comfortable placing Xypheus up front with anyone, including myself. He should stay to the rear as much as possible, preferably with a bodyguard of some sort. We can even switch who plays the role of bodyguard at times if you wish."
"Xypheus," Reod turned to the mage, "I respect your work, don't get me wrong. But physical contact may not go well with you, and I'd rather protect you from it."
"Now, hurry up men, let's get moving. No need to give the advantage to those Prytians."

"I have a suggestion, good Reod. Whilst we have Khallash and Jupp in our company, why not rotate in with them. Once we reach Wootmerry and lose their company, your plan comes in very handy, with the exception of your unwillingness to ride next to Brayden . . ." Jadrich spoke candidly. He briefly glanced at Brayden, then once around at all of the Rhyllans.
"We are on a mission that will require our utmost cooperation. To fail in that cooperation is to die. Wootmerry is an unforgiving place. You never know when the blade of an Azaran will save you from death. By protesting his company, you only lessen the chances of him employing his blade for such a task. If you can't tolerate each other's company, then bite your tongue for the duration of this trip and stay your prejudices," Jadrich turned his gaze back to Reod's eyes.
"I'm not here to referee a Rhyllan-Azaran squabble. I'm here for the money and I make no pretenses that I am here for any other reason. Petty bickering lessens the chances that I make what money I need on this trip. We will ride to Wootmerry and we will not fight amongst ourselves. Is that clear?" Jadrich said in a stern tone. He looked around to see if the rest of his party understood, but before they had a chance answer, he ended his argument, "Good."
Now moving his horse to the forward of the line, he opened up a pocket and withdrew the spyglass that the lady had given him. He extended it out to Nightion as he spoke: "This is a precious gift from the Lady, Nightion. I think it best to be in your keep for now. Whoever rides point will need its use, please pass it on as you pass your responsibility." Jadrich handed the spyglass to Nightion, then gave him a coy smile and a pat on the back before he returned to his place in line next to Brayden.
Under his breath and at a decibel that he was certain that only Brayden could hear, Jadrich said, "This going to be a long trip. Try not to provoke the Rhyllans, okay?" Jadrich grinned.
Finally with a bellow that seemed too loud for such a small man as Jadrich, he yelled, "Everybody in line according to Reod's orders! Khallash, when you're ready, move us out!"

"I be doing what you all require of me, and would be more then happy to cover any angle of the party." Dereth listened to Reod complain of his political squabbles, but Dereth had a apathetic mood on this topic. His time in the wilderness had made him more a man of the people then political boundries. Dereth was more wanting to get on the road...he wondered how far ahead the Pyritans already were to the artifacts, and why squabbling over line spots was holding them up. Dereth decided if they didnt hit the road very soon, he would ride out alone and let them catch up.
Dereth was about as good a horseback rider as there was in the land. Dereth had seen a fair amount of combat in the wilderness, and did most of it from the saddle. He had brought his own horse with him. It was a staggeringly huge white horse that had alsmot as many scars as Dereth. Dereth liked to joke about the horse being a better fighter then him, and it was clear this horse had seen a lot. "Well gents, what say we hit the trail before the artifacts are already in pyritan hands? I will ride with whomever i am required to ride next to, politics be damned...just show me the enemy and lets get going." Dereth wondered if, despite being a bit of a cocky jackass sometimes, if he was going to have to a peacemaker in the group...great, he thought, im supposed the be the one everyone argues with....better deflect some attention from the argument at hand..."Yah, so that Del var chick had a nice rack...huh? Upon mention of his kind, and not his name from the Rhyllans, a slight smile splays across Braydens lips. A twinkle of fun emerges, as the others toss along suggestions, and Jadrich himself, speaking up, in Brayden's defense, brings an even broader grin.
"Well, Reod, Dereth and Nightion, I for one will not step in your way as you choose to run headlong into a trap I could disarm, or bash down the door that could bring all kinds of danger to us, when a simple pick of the lock is all that is needed. In fact, I encourage it."
Leaning closer as Jadrich informs him to not stir things up. Brayden whispers ever so slightly.

Circling the group slowly on his horse, Kallash followed the order-of-march discussion with mild interest. He knew of Reod Dai’s reputation and was pleased to know that the Rhyllan warrior would be close at hand if something went awry, but he doubted there would be any trouble en route to the border. The spat that brewed between the Rhyllans and the Azaran bothered him little – he held slight disdain for Rhyllans in general, and no use at all for Azaran pirates. But when the other fighter – Dereth – made an uncouth remark about his liege Lady, he could not hold his tongue.
“Know this,” he said, after moving his mount closer to Dereth, and in a voice that was pointed yet loud enough for all to hear. “Speak that way again about the Lady Del Var, and I’ve no qualms about putting a crossbow bolt into your impertinent hide. Or mayhap Jupp’ll skewer you with that big sword he bears. Either way you’ll learn the penalty for a coarse and wagging tongue is stiff in Cranstone, lad.”

Jadrich rolled his eyes at Dereth's comments. Jadrich took a deep inhale as if he were about to say something to Dereth, but was distracted by Khallash turning his horse about. By Khallash's red face, Jadrich could tell that the problem was about to be solved.
Jadrich leaned back over to Brayden and whispered with a smile, "Two silver on the old man."
Reod rolled his eyes at both Dereth and Brayden. He was ready to put Dereth in check himself when he noticed Kallash spin around quickly. Dereth may be a fine fighter, but he had obviously shown a lack of social skills. Reod spun around on his horse to follow behind Kallash.
"Keep those comments to yourself, Dereth," he said once it seemed Kallash was through, "We won't hear of that talk when these two (pointing to the men-at-arms) leave us, either."
With that, Reod turned to return to Nightion and the front of the pack.
Dereth reminded Reod of most young fighters of the Rhyllan Guard. Boastful young men that wanted to show the rest of the Guard what they had to offer. These same young men were often left quiet, too quiet sometimes, after their first battle. If they returned at all. Those that returned usually had a remarkable change in attitude. Reod enjoyed the silence.
Reod knew that Dereth was battle tested, despite his youth. He was puzzled as to why Dereth would act this way. He resolved to find out that night around a nice campfire.
As for Brayden, Reod could only laugh to himself.
"Just like an Azaran," he thought, "he probably thinks I haven't ran into a hundred of Azarans just like him. I do believe I've heard the same exact line somewhere before, I just can't pinpoint where."
He made sure to cast a glare at Brayden as he rode by.

Dereth was suprised by the response from the others...an obvious joke in his mind not to be take too seriously...Dereth felt offended the group was soo quick to turn on him. Dereth had been ready for awhile, and despite achieving his goal of quelling the other fight, he had inadvertantly created a new one. Dereth decided it best to get going and started to ride his horse towards the gate. "Come on men, off we go...weve had enough waiting around for a lifetime." Dereth did his usual equipment check, admired once more the shield with the family coat of arms, and then yelled "To god and to success, we ride to hell to be heroes eternally!"
"Young Dereth," Reod thought, "young, young Dereth."
"Care to wait for the rest of us?" Reod said out loud, "You are after all, guarding our mage."
A slight chuckle escaped Reod's mouth. He knew Dereth was young and raw, but Dereth was also amusing at times. Perhaps Dereth should apply for the Guard when this was all said and done. A little training, a little discipline, a few hundred arrows shot at him. He'd straighten up and be a fine captain, someday.

"Ah, Reod...i was merely attempting another means by which to get the party on the road...seeing as how your the only one who even noticed i had gone anywhere, i might as well return." Dereth thought a lot about his party, but Reod struck his fancy most. He had met the man while both were still in the guard, and had heared people talk of the event that led him to leave the guard. Dereth felt strangely attached to this man, for both had similar backgrounds, similar reasons for leaving the guard, and similar heritage. Reod was a leader, that much was clear. But as to why he was soo loyal to the lady and why he was soo defensive of her, Dereth would like to find out. Dereth could see himself following this man, which would be a first in his young life. "I shall return to my duties of babysitting the mage, as long as SOMEONE gets this thing on the road...after my little speech we were supposed to ride full gallop out of here...something about glory and honor....but no, you all ruined it! Back of the line Dereth, yes sir" Dererth wonderd if he could hide his thoughts with smartass comments, and hoped no one noticed what he really thought before he was ready to open up.

With a curt nod toward the barkeep, Kallash flashed one last glare in Dereth’s direction and then spurred his horse forward and out the gate. The other riders followed suit, with Jupp and the pack mules drawing up the rear.
As soon as the entire party cleared Lady Del Var’s keep, the air began to haze and hum just overhead, much the feeling of an approaching thunderstorm. Xypheus, in particular, looked up expectantly, and then nodded knowingly when an audible sound – much like that of gloved hands clapped swiftly together - ended the phenomena.
Kallash set a steady pace, not quick nor slow. He gave the impression of one set on accomplishing his escort mission as promptly as possible without giving the appearance of hurrying. Jupp was content to mumble occasional words of encouragement to the mules.
Initially, the countryside was broken with long ridges and dotted with farmland, the crops already grown high in the late summer heat. Farm-folk beholden to Lady Del Var, recognizing her livery on three of the riders, looked up and nodded humble greetings to the group.

From studying the look on Xypheus, Jadrich could only assume that the break in the weather was caused by their lovely benefactor. Jadrich thought about what awesome power one must have to control nature as such.
After looking up at the sky in wonderment, Jadrich playfully spoke, "Dereth, when we return with the treasures, remind me how it wouldn't be wise to insult the Lady."
Jadrich smiled and began humming a bit of a happy tune for the journey.
Reod was more than happy to get moving. He was more interested in seeing this odd group through the mission and returning home safely than in the prize that would be his. If successful, he knew Jadrich would be telling the tale for the rest of his life.
Reod knew Kallash and Jupp, though not well. Reod felt neither trusted him very much, and he supposed that was deserving. He knew Kallash better, which may have explained why Kallash chose to lead. Kallash and Reod had swapped a few stories in the past few weeks, while Jupp kept more to himself.
Despite this, Kallash and Reod didn't speak much as they traveled. Both were honed in at the task at hand. They had stood the watch before and knew they should be ready for anything, even in this "innocent" countryside.

Kallash slowed a bit to allow Reod’s horse to draw up with his own.
“You may not be familiar with the tactics of the hill people, Reod,” he said, a touch of condescension in his tone as his eyes continually scanned the horizon. “They usually begin with a loud diversion coming right at you – usually a solitary warrior or a small group - while the main force attacks from the flanks or rear. They are raiders, and seek to take everything you’ve got. Killing is only a secondary motive, I believe, but they are crazy folk and cannot be bargained with. The only diplomacy they understand is the point of a sword or an arrow. We kill them on sight.”
"Thank you for the information, Kallash. As always, you have proven dependable. I wish you could join us on this quest, though I know you have other obligations.
If it is sword and arrows that make them understand, then we'll surely greet them with such."
Reod reached over and patted Kallash on the shoulder and said, "I'll alert the others."
With that, Reod pulled to the rear. Reod turned to the outside of the group, and circled around as he came to Jupp. He returned to the outside of Jadrich, and paced the group.
When he finished the account that Kallash gave him, Reod added, "Dereth, be ready. I'd suspect an attack to the rear."
At that, Reod returned to the front, keeping more of an eye to the flanks than to the road in front of him.

With the news that Reod had provided him, Jadrich immediately ceased his humming. You could see a noticeable expression change on Jadrich's face. The jovial look of the bartender was gone and replaced by a stern look of concentration. Jadrich's eyes darted from forest to outcropping looking for probable places of ambush. In mid gaze, Jadrich opened up a question to Reod and Khallash, "These hill people . . . should we expect them to be mounted on horseback, or do they typically attack on foot? Also, what is the likelyhood of them hitting a fully armed expedition such as ours?"

Kallash did not cease his visual scanning of the countryside, but raised his voice somewhat to be heard in reply. “Always on foot, least to my recollection. They might well butcher the horses for food, as they’re always starving hungry.”
He paused for effect - he seemed to relish the idea that the Scallite barkeep was concerned - and then continued: “And they’ll attack anything short of a column o’ lancers, I imagine. They’re mad-men, and there’s plenty around these parts. Eight armed men won’t deter them.”

Mage, i fully expect if they come behind us for a charge in some sorts by me into their lines or a flank. I am a very skilled charger and can do more damage that way then any other way. Any help you could provide would be more then welcome. Not that im care or anything, but just for reference do you know how to resurrect the dead? :D " Dereth smirked at his comment, and figured a little humor would lighten up the mood...for if the enemy was to attack, it would not come any slower if we were arguing or cooperation, and we would survive much better cooperating. "I'm afraid dead is dead, Dereth," said Xypheus somewhat scornfully. "I do no bargaining with gods over lives...and even if I did, I'm not sure you'd warrant my time. Suffice it to say that you're of better service to the group alive and well -- don't go doing anything stupid. I can support a charge to some extent...but I'm not so certain it would be a good idea for us to split up in the case of a barbarian raid. I'll leave the tactical strategy to others, however."

Nightion didnt feel that usual tingling on the back of his neck, but the others were surely acting apprehensive...Searching in the trees and high grass, the Ranger's keen eyes found nothing.
"If enemies lie in wait, they do so blended in, but this is thier for give the pun, "neck of the woods". i suspect we will have ample time to bring our arms to bear if thier are troubles"
Nightion returned to scanning what was in front of him...Strange he thought how some of the group were already bickering with one another, as if they were all ten and boasting of who can pee farthest. He did agree that he cared nothing of Azarans, but always taking things in balance, he realized he hadnt had a meaningful conversation with one eithier..... No, he would not be predjudice to anyone in the group unless they gave him reason....Nightion nodded to himself, his conclusion satisfying him...He focused his attention on the trail

Jadrich laughed to himself for a moment at the Mage's comments before adding his own quip, "Perhaps bargaining with the gods would not be needed in Dereth's case. I'd think that after a week of his company, they'd send him back to the mortal world just to spare themselves the trouble of putting up with him any further." Jadrich grinned broadly.
"But in true fashion, gentlemen, it is excellent to be in the company of such skilled fighters . . . " Jadrich paused and looked around letting his glance fall upon Reod with a playful wink, "Oh yes, and your company is appreciated, too, Reod."
Jadrich let his humor wash over his fellows for a moment as he looked about the group. Being a skilled judge of character, Jadrich had already pegged most of his new companions to their outward motivations. He was no fool when it came to judging men and realized that true motivations may take awhile to pick up. That would come in time.
Yet, there was one in the group that Jadrich hadn't gotten a good read on: the ranger. Jadrich's experience with rangers was lacking. Very few ever came into his bar because it catered to a higher class of citizen. The few rangers that he had met struck Jadrich as simple folk who didn't relish the excesses that he provided at his tavern. This is why Jadrich found it curious that the Ranger was one of the first to ask the Lady Del Var about reward for their efforts. A point for Jadrich to ponder as he got to know all of his new companions better.

As the line of mounted men plodded along, eyes moving warily over the terrain, Kallash spoke up about their course.
“You’ve got the scroll map, and it sounds as if Nightion there may have been over this territory prior. We’re headed for what’s known as the Broken Gates. It’s the ruin of a large, ceremonial entrance into ancient Britau. The road’s a mess from there on in, but it will give you a course southward into the heart of Wootmerry. But however farther in we travel means that far again back, alone, just me and the lad, Jupp. And though we’ve fought the hill-folk for many a year – well, I have anyway – I’ve no desire to wet my sword with their blood for the mere pleasure of killing. Lady Del Var’s done right by me and mine…no, I’m afraid we’ll be heading back once we’ve reached the Gates as ordered.”
As they came to the top of a small rise, Kallash (in the lead) suddenly stiffened and then swiftly pulled up his crossbow to bear forward. Reod, close by the older man, tensed as well and then followed his intent gaze down the slope. There below them, perhaps 200 paces away, a rider-less horse was staggering around in rough arcs and bleeding profusely from a gash in its hindquarters. It’s saddle was partially off, and there was no sign of any riders or any threats for that matter, other than a pair of vultures who had come to watch the animal go through its death-throes.

I go with option A: its a diversion. I don't want to get mucked up in a missing person investigation when we have other duties to attend to. Nightion, take a look through the spyglass and see if you can see any markings on the horse or saddle that might give us a clue as to who the rider was. Any other opinions?"
"I agree with you, Jadrich", replied Reod, "we need to stay ready now. I have a feeling our friends in the hills are watching."

Kallash took a quick, squinting glance back at Dereth, wondering if the young fighter was half crazy or just annoyingly brash. Yet the habitual practice of answering promptly when asked a question got the better of him, and he quickly measured the distance in his head and called back to the Rhyllan.
“Around 200 paces…it’s got a saddle and maybe some gear or saddle bags, but it’s hard to tell. I don’t see anything else.”
Jupp, meanwhile, had dismounted and tied the pack mules line off on a dead tree that lay nearby. He had also drawn his enormous sword, and was now standing dutifully as if to guard the rear of the party. He looks bored.

Nightion brought the spyglass up to his eyes....looking for a few seconds he spoke out..
"Strange indeed, this horse we see has a serious wound, though i do not think it is made from man, it is like a bite mark, maybe from a predator of some type...."
Nightion brings the glass all across the landscape....
"There are no other creatures here, other than the vulchers....The blood tracks in from the southeast.....odd......Where is the rider of this horse...and what beast could bring down this horses master than catch up to the horse itself?"
Nightion lowers the spyglass.

"Thanks, Nightion," Jadrich said uneasily, "I don't like it one bit. My wits would tell me to avoid this situation completely. I don't fancy fighting a creature that could run down a horse and that is predatory by nature. Nonetheless, one that we cannot currently see nor properly assess. My wits also tell me that predatory creatures don't carry gold or gems on them either. Its wasted time over little profit. We should leave the horse to the vultures, after all, vultures have to eat, too. I don't mean to steal a meal from them. We should bear wide of this situation, favoring the direction opposite the blood trail if at all possible. Any objections, or overwhelming urges to investigate further?"
Jadrich lowered his crossbow slightly and continued to scan the horizon as he awaited responses from the group.

"Well, good thing we are all on edge, cause I was afraid we would waltz into Wootmerry and take what we needed" Brayden stated sardonically.
"But of course, we are the brave ones, Right Reod?"
Reod glanced over his inside shoulder, his right shoulder that is, at Brayden. The Azaran seemed amused with himself and his little quip. He couldn't remember an Azaran he liked, and this one was proving to be just like the others.
Reod knew he wouldn't allow anyone near that horse, but he couldn't resist an argument with the Azaran. He turned his horse to the inside so he could better see Brayden.
"Well, thief, I was going to send the weakest member of our group. It was a toss up between you, and well, you. But, if you're so brave and dashing, have at it. I could use some laughter myself."
With that, he spun his horse back towards Kallash. Damned Azarans.

After another quick glance split between Reod and the Azaran, Kallash returned his full attention to the wounded horse. “Somethin’ rotten about this…”
He spit forcefully for added effect.
“Somewhere there’s got to be a rider for that horse, and I doubt he’s any better off than his mount. The only fools that ride alone hereabouts are would-be heroes off in search of Wootmerry treasure. Either one of them’s fallen victim to the hill-folk – or some nasty beasty – or this isn’t the only horse out there. I’m with Jadrich in thinking that avoiding this altogether would be wise, but knowing who the rider is – or was – may be worthwhile, too. But it’s up to you all…my orders are to lead you to the Gates, and that’s due south o’ here. We can swing west a bit if you wish to.”

"This does indeed seem questionable, to say the least. I think we would be best served avoiding this particular confrontation," replied Xypheus.
Reod honestly didn't want the Azaran to take the dare, but was tempted to wait for Brayden's answer.
"Let's just head west a bit and go around this obstacle. No need to add more trouble to our cause. We're not all heroes. Well, at least the Azaran isn't."

Standing not five feet from the Azaran, the Rhyllan points at the Azaran and yells, 'SHEEP HUMPER!' Not wanting to be outdone by the Rhyllan, the Azaran stands up and points at the Rhyllan and yells, 'GOAT BLOWER!' With obvious tension in the air, the barkeep breaks the silence, saying . . ."
Jadrich paused and took in a long draft of air before yelling, "I THOUGHT WE ALREADY AGREED THAT WE WEREN'T GOING TO DO THIS SHIT!"

" The rider of that wounded horse is no doubt a man with a soul. We do not know if he is truly dead, he may have survived the attack, My concious calls on me to do at the very least a check of the area......"
Nighiton paused, he fretted for a second. "It is hard on my heart to turn ym back on my fellow man or beast, if the follwing agrees, a small search of the surrounding area wouls suffice"
With that Nightion looked hopefully at the rest.

Regaining some of his composure, Jadrich turned to Nightion, "You know well then, that if it is a beast that we run into, we most likely will have to kill it, right? Especially if it is feeding on the victim that we are searching for. A hunter doesn't like giving up that which it worked for. What weight do you put on the man's life over the beasts life if we find the two?" Jadrich asked rhetorically.
Jadrich shifted uneasily in his saddle. He knew that the wise thing to do wasn't always the right thing to do. He had seen enough politics to understand this concept deeply. The politicians that frequented Jadrich's tavern seemed incapable of understanding it. Jadrich looked into Nightion's eyes and saw willful compassion a trait that was rarely present at his bar. Jadrich smiled.
"Right, then. Let's take an hour, no more to investigate this site," Jadrich said looking up the road at the horse. He then turned his attention to a tree off to the side of the trail. "When that tree's shadow hits the side of the road, we will leave. Until then, let's stay together, in sight of each other. If you are investigating a perimeter, make sure somebody is with you."
Jadrich spurred his horse on toward the injured horse in the road and he waved his hand at the others indicating them to follow.
Compassion. Reod had been accused once or twice of not having it. It was an acquired trait, formed after years of battle. No time for compassion in a battlefield. Even if this wasn't a battlefield, compassion had long since left Reod.
"Jadrich, you bastard...", he muttered to himself, "we've no time for this."
It was too late. Jadrich was on his way.
Reod shook his head. Even if this went well, they would lose time. Reod then spurred his own horse.
"If we must...", he called out to Jadrich.

With an audible sigh of frustration, Kallash guided his horse back toward Jupp, and instructed the big lad to bring the mules forward slowly. He then turned to Dereth.
“Jupp’s a powerful fellow and can wield that big hunk o’ sword, but he’s slow and clumsy. If it comes to it, he’s a stationary fighter. I’d be distressed if anything happened to him…” The elder man said no more, but wheeled his horse and pressed forward to follow after Jadrich and Reod.
As the riders closed the distance ahead, the vultures took notice and shifted nervously, but the wounded horse was oblivious, lost in its agony. The hideous gash in its hindquarters was going to kill it soon enough, but the animal seemed frantic in its effort to keep moving. Lathered with sweat, its eyes bulging, it was the picture of distress.
Inside 100 paces, Kallash paused to crank his crossbow, the bow strings creaking a bit as they tightened. He then edged his own mount forward a bit further, although the mare was clearly edgy. Satisfied with the range, he fired the bolt – a lethal shot into the head of the wounded animal. It collapsed soundlessly into a bloody heap.

"At least the vultures will be happy when we're gone," Reod said to himself. Kallash's stories about his weapon proficiency were indeed true. He looked to Kallash and Jadrich.
"Kallash, you mind covering us?"
Reod looked at the horse and the gash it received from a distance. He looked to the southeast where the tracks led.
"Jadrich, you want the horse or the tracks? If you take the tracks, don't travel far off."

Jadrich pulled his horse up about 20 paces short of the dead horse. He dismounted and began walking over to the horse.
"Reod, you and Nightion check out the tracks. Brayden, Dereth and I will inspect the horse and the near surroundings. Kallash, Jupp and Xypheus, take the horses and mules to a point between the dead horse and where Reod and Nightion are looking. If there are hill people around, I don't want them hitting our rear and sending our horses off. Kallash will watch our forward," Jadrich said spreading his arms out about 120 degrees, "Xypheus: our left rear flank," he turned to the left rear and made the same gesture, "Jupp: our right rear flank," he turned and completed the circle with the same gesture. "Let's be quick about this, I don't want to hang ourselves out here too long."
I will be using my spot skill, if it does anything for me.
Reod nodded in agreement and dismounted near the dead horse. He reached with his right hand and pulled out his longsword, which for some time he had called the "Hellantic", but had no real reason why.
"Nightion, you're more experienced with tracks than me. Lead the way."

As the men approached the dead horse, the vultures took flight, adding annoyed squawks directed at the interlopers who had come between them and their meal. Kallash sneered at the carrion birds – he’d always hated the disgusting creatures – and moved past the dead horse to take up his station as Jadrich had indicated. He cast a furtive glance completely around them, then fixed his gaze upon the direction assigned to him. Jupp had come along without a word, adding the others’ horses to his collection of animals.
As Dereth pawed through the few belongings left with the dead horse, he found little of worth. The saddle was a simple one of worn leather, showing its age. A shoddy bedroll was tied to it, and a wooden bowl was tucked beneath that. All that really caught Dereth’s eye was an item a little bigger than his hand and wrapped in light blue cloth, and hard to the touch as he tapped it with a knuckle through the linen. Jadrich noted that it looked like the coverings often used by glass merchants in Scalla.
Ahead aways, Nightion was having little trouble following the horse’s spattered blood, but could find no indication of the missing rider. Reod kept up a constant scanning of the surrounding terrain, his sword swaying slightly from side to side as if to track along with his eyes. As they advanced, however, both men noted that the bloody path emerged from the top of a small, crested segment of ground perhaps 30 paces ahead. What lay beyond was blocked to their view, and to maneuver into a spot to get a better look would separate them substantially from the others.

You'd need to shout to Kallash (who's closest).
Reod looked over his left shoulder towards Kallash. "Blast it. They're too far back to provide help", he thought.

"Interesting . . ." Jadrich commented looking at the wrapped item that Dereth had pulled from the saddlebags. "Dereth, that piece in your hand looks to be of Scallite origins, at least the wrappings are. The glass merchants of my people have a peculiar way of wrapping their wares so that they're more resistant to breakage over long travels. This piece is wrapped in such manner. Do you mind if I have a look, Dereth?"
Jadrich extended his hand as if to receive the item from Dereth.
If Dereth lets Jadrich take a look, Jadrich will use his appraisal skill to try and determine what it is, it's worth and any other details he can determine.

"It is most interesting by feel, but i am but a man of the wilderness...items such as this are not my specialty. If you would do me a favor, maybe sometime down the road i can repay you with helping you with something you might need." With that, Dereth handed the item to Jadrich, and pretended to look around the countryside like he wasnt excited about this item. "If this item in Scallite to be sure, what would a rider have use of it for if he was either coming or going to wootmerry from Cranstone. Better yet, whens the last time a Scallan was in Cranstone. Kallash, were there any other expeditions orgainized by the fair lady?"
WSUCougar
07-28-2004, 09:37 AM
Kallash’s attention was directed more toward Reod and Nightion and the possible source of the attack on the horse and its rider, but he heard Dereth’s question and offered a quick reply.
“No, Lady Del Var made no mention of any other expedition or individuals working for her pay. This is a common route for adventurers heading into Wootmerry, however, so I’m not surprised to see a solitary rider here. Normally the hill people pick them off, though.”
With a nod to Dereth, Jadrich took the cloth-wrapped item in hand, and by touch alone he recognized the feel of a heavy glass vessel of some kind. He reached in and withdrew the item from its cover, and sure enough it was an ornamental chalice made of thick glass. Such a thing in itself was quite fine to Jadrich’s eye…he recognized it as something commonly carried by wealthy merchants or in the baggage of traveling nobles, and often used in ceremonies or for formal toasts. His eyes were quickly drawn to the markings etched into the side of the glass, three letters in a foreign alphabet.
Raven Hawk
07-28-2004, 09:55 AM
Jadrich studied the chalice from various different angles. He was stuck for a moment studying the markings on one side. He then proceeded to speak.
"This is indeed a piece of Scallan craftmanship . . ." Jadrich said drifting into further study of the vessel, "Yet a Scallite rider did not carry this item. These markings here," Jadrich pointed to the characters etched into the glass, "are made in the language of the An-Ra, or as they affectionately call themselves The Ra. Although I recognize the origin of the characters, unfortunately I do not read An-Ra and do not understand their meaning. What I do know is that this item probably belonged to a nobleman or a wealthy merchant. Seeing as there is no evidence of a merchants cart here, I'd place my wager that this chalice belonged to a nobleman."
Jadrich drifted into a faded memory for a moment,"As for The Ra, my people have no distinct love for them, but we maintain trade relationships with them. As legend has it, The Ra were the sect of the Javadan Empire that instigated its civil war which in turn led to the empire's demise. The Ra are direct decendents of a nation in the Javadan empire, and because of their part in its downfall, they are hated by all of the other child nations of the former Empire."
Jadrich looked up to Xypheus, "Anybody here happen to read An-Ra?"

"Lets give each other a wide berth between us, and go over that crest at two different points, i feel the answer lies beyond that hill."
Nightion looked back toward the others, making hand signals trying to indicate what they were going to do...frustrated, he hoped they could follow.
"Time is important, and we can fend for ourselves, lets go"
With that, the Ranger crept forward, his demeanor changing, he was ready for action as he started towards the rise.
"Let's do it, then. You take the left, I'll take the right", replied Reod.
With that, Reod began to crouch as he approached the crest. He made sure to hold "Hellantic" low and with his right hand. He wanted to be prepared for anything that may be lurking on the other side.

Spreading out a bit before advancing, the Rhyllan warrior and ranger began a cautious advance up the slight rise. The ground was dry, and when the footing gave way, the wind swirled miniature dust-clouds underfoot. Small, prickly bushes were scattered about the area, and it appeared from the blood trail that the terrified horse had plowed right over the top of one as it had crossed over the crest. The two men were each no farther than fifteen paces from that bush, and thus 25-30 paces apart.
Girded for action, both men’s attention was fully focused on what lay beyond the crest…and thus both stopped in their tracks at the distinctive sound of grunting that came to their ears from the other side. Quick, fierce huffs and grunts – as if some kind of creature were exerting itself in a continual manner, perhaps pulling something.
A gust of wind kicked up another swirl of dust, and the grunting abruptly ceased.

Nightion instantly stopped at the sound of grutning and huffing...he tried to strain his ears to hear more, he held his fist up to Reod, signalling for a stop..... The first thought that occured was that whatever beast had killed the horse, it now had its rider and was maybe trying to take it to its den, or someplace to enjoy its meal......The man must be in bad shape, for to make no effort to get away to the beast meant that indeed. there was little time to waste...
Nightion pulled his arrow back to full draw, looked at Reod with an intense stare, and fiecrefully nodded toward the crest, he assumed the vetran warrior would get his drift....with that, He turned, braced and then charged the top of the hill.
Hearing the horrible noise from the other side had stopped Reod, who now gazed towards Nightion. When Nightion returned the look and nodded in the direction of the noise, it was all he needed.
He charged his side of the hill, looking for action.

Leading the charge from the left side of the rise, Nightion was the first to top the crest. His eyes, tracing along the length of his longbow’s nocked arrow, fell upon a dirty grayish form not far below him. Low to the ground, large – at least as big as a thickset man - with elements of black and white in its coloring, the beast’s face was covered in blood and grime from what looked to be a human corpse bunched at its feet. Nightion recognized it immediately as a dire badger. It was at most 20 paces away, and was looking right at him.
On the right, Reod cleared the crest and quickly took in the scene: the mutilated remains of a man, an ample burrow in the ground, and the hulking form of a dire badger. Reod had encountered such a creature before, and knew that they were tough, aggressive fighters if they got in close. Even as the Rhyllan warrior was assessing this, the badger’s muscles tensed and then it sprang forward to begin its snarling advance upon the ranger…
Fortunately, for Reod, the dire badger didn't appear to notice him. Unfortunately, the dire badger was headed for Nightion. Reod began to sprint down the hill to try and cut off the dire badger, hoping that both he and Nightion could overcome the badger.
Reod wasn't sure if he would get there in time. He hoped Nightion would be able to fend for himself until help arrived. The thought processes of Reod quickly turned to what it would take to kill this dire badger, and nothing more.

Nightion eyes went wide at the sight of the dire badger, a quite vicious beast, to be killed on sight, no more than predators. Dropping to one knee, the Ranger lined his longbow up with the center of the charging beasts chest, using all his skill with the bow...out of the corner of his eye, he thought he saw Reod charging in from the side, but he wouldnt get there in time...Nightion released his strike in a smooth motion, hoping it would at least mortally wound the beast, or stop its charge....
If the badgers charge is not stopped by the longbow, Nightion will TRY an use his jumping ability to get out of the way

From a distance, it took Kallash a moment to see that the two Rhyllans were advancing aggressively up the rise. He had seen the ranger gesturing, but given the lay of the land it appeared this was only to indicate further separation from the group on their part. The old Cranstonian man-at-arms was unhappy with the way things were going – stringing out the party was unwise in his mind – but he merely bit his lip and kept silent, as he felt that he had spoken his mind and that it was not his place to nag any further.
After a glance back at the dead horse, he turned back to see the two men charge over the rise and then halt. Nightion had his bowstring drawn taut and ready to fire, and the warrior Reod Dai suddenly bolted ahead before disappearing beyond Kallash’s view. Something was about!
“Festering ASS!” he cursed, turning back to the others as he began to move ahead toward the distant rise. “Jadrich! The Rhyllans are attacking…but we must stay together! Come up in support, now. Hurry!”
He glanced over at Jupp. “Bring the horses up, lad. Slowly. Don’t panic ‘em. Be ready.”
With that he trotted toward the Rhyllans’ position, still quite aways ahead.

He bolted to Jupp who had the horses, and with seemingly blistering pace was upon his horse...But for some reason, he hesitated. "Kallash, would you view it as prudent for me to ride ahead of the party to assist the other two, or do you feel it would be foolish? I do not want to sit idly by why my rhyllan borthers are under attack, but i also feel an obligation to protect Jadrich and the others. What would you suggest kallash?" Dereth was willing to go either way, and he was trying to heed the others words of wisdom by not charging alone blindly and leaving the party vulnerable.

Just remember that unless you have ESP, you don't know what's on the other side of the rise.

Brayden draws his rapier as he follows the others, not wanting to truly put himself at risk, if he doesn't have to.
As he crests the hill, that the Rhyllans went over, he hops of his horse, not able to fight well from horseback, and moves down towards the creature. Setting himself in position to attack the beast when it is most opportune.

Jadrich sat back in his saddle a little as he drew in a deep breath. As he exhaled his tenor voice filled the air with a strong and proud song . . .
(Inspire Courage)
"Many grains of salt have passed,
Through the hour glass,
Since the Heroes of Scalla rode
To perform their task.
The massive hounds of Mordren bayed,
And the horses neighed,
As the Heroes of Scalla rode
Out upon their raid.
They brought their gods and their horses,
With them to the fight,
Tooth and steel and hoof and arrow
Rung out through the night,
The Heroes of Scalla stood 'lone
With the coming of the light . . . . "

Despite its low-set profile, the charging badger was a huge target in Nightion’s sights, and he could hardly miss. The arrow flew its short course, and plunged deeply into the creature’s upper torso. It growled in pain and stumbled a bit under the shock, giving the ranger a moment’s instant to dive out of its path. In doing so he tumbled down the slight slope to the left, and the beast wheeled that direction to match this movement, screaming again in fury.
This gave Reod Dai the opportunity he needed to engage the animal from the flank. Racing in unchecked, it was a basic maneuver to strike the badger with his longsword. Alas, as he struck, the creature pivoted further to chase Nightion, and the blow was but a glancing one!

Far behind, Kallash trotted ahead at a quick, measured pace. Used to reloading his crossbow on the move, he had it cranked and ready by the time he reached the base of the rise. He could hear the sounds of a raging beast on the other side of the slope.
Jupp was aways back still, and the other Rhyllan – Dereth – had re-mounted and was getting his horse up to speed but still had some sizable distance to cross. The wizard Xypheus was coming along next, clearly in no hurry, followed by Jadrich and the Azaran. And could that be a song the Scallite was singing?!? Kallash could not help but smile.

Yelling out, Nightion leaped to his left, and the tumbled a short way down the hill.....trying to regain his balance, he knew the beast was not far behind, Finally able to regain his footing he pulled his own sword from its scabbarb, though not longsword by any means, its curved blade was long and sharp enough to do the job, but to cut down the beast it would take many blows, and he feared he wouldnt have the time......It was obvious the Ranger had the badgers full attention as it came toward him again, well, at least it was mortal, its squeal when his arrow had struck assured that...maybe he coudl survive long enough for his Rhyllan Brother to come to his rescue, if he could merely survive...
"GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!", was the only thing Reod could say at the moment. He was so focused on the moment at hand he didn't realize the some of the party was at the top of the crest.
Is the badger still focused on Nightion?

Is the badger still focused on Nightion?
Yes, and that still gives you a flank attack.
Excellent!
The dire badger, despite taking a glancing blow from Reod, continued to chase Nightion. Reod, in turn, prepared for another strike on the badger, this time hoping for a critical hit that might make the badger a little more stationary. Reod was determined not to just strike a "glancing blow" this time.

Up close, the dire badger looked to be even more of a daunting foe, with the still-wet gore spattered on its face and massive claws. In his periphery Nightion could see Reod moving to strike the beast again, but the ranger’s attention was fully captured by the close proximity of the badger. His actions were purely defensive as he back-peddled and moved his weapon to fend off the deadly reach of the badger’s claws.
Reod was no fool, and took advantage of the brute’s fixation on Nightion by driving his longsword deeply into its muscular rear thigh. The primal roar that fell upon his ears was almost staggering, but the Rhyllan was uncertain if that had been his own battle cry or that of the wounded beast. Yet now – as he exerted to remove the imbedded sword-blade – the badger began to writhe about with the ferocious babble of a rabid dog. And with surprising quickness it wheeled about to retaliate.
Not far away, Kallash and now Dereth – the latter moving at speed upon horseback – crossed the rise and entered the battleground. The elder man promptly assessed the peril and brought his crossbow swiftly to bear, followed immediately by the mechanical clank of the bolt being released and the subsequent sound of its impact into the hide of the dire badger. Dereth plunged over the crest, sword in hand, and bore down upon the creature. A heartbeat more and he would be in striking range.
The remainder of the group continued their advance forward to the sound of Jadrich’s heroic song.
Reod now went on the defensive. He had his swings at the badger, and now was in need of help himself. Fortunately, the dire badger was wounded and about to be hit with a couple arrows, hopefully very quickly. It was obvious more help was on the way, but it wasn't obvious when it would arrive.
Reod had faced a dire badger before, and knew they were bad news. Reod had help that day, and needed help now. For the time being, though, Reod was left to stop those massive claws with the Hellantic. Reod wanted to avoid backing up the hill and losing his footing, but when a dire badger is on you, you sometimes don't have a choice.
Reod's thoughts were of survival, but in the back of his head he could hear a song.

Is it just me, or does everybody else misread Reod's sword's name as HellAtlantic?

...and then, suddenly, the light bulb went off over Jadrich's head.

Let me know when I get to the crest of the hill...I'm going to need to evaluate the situation once I get there.
EDIT - And would it be too much to prepare an instance of Magic Missile so it's ready to fire if necessary once I reach the crest of the hill? Seems like with all the screaming and stuff, that would be the prudent thing to do without knowing what's on the other end of the hill.
