This dynasty report is going to follow the progress of my BU team, currently about to enter it's fourth season with me at the helm. We've had a good deal of success in my first three seasons. Here is an outline of our achievements thus far:

Boston University Terriers Historical Performances

Season W L CW CL Rank RPI Prs Result
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2005 22 10 12 4 85 105 49 Loss in NCAA Tourney Round 1
2004 23 9 12 4 72 80 45 Loss in NIT Round 1
2003 28 4 15 1 69 77 42 Loss in NCAA Tourney Round 1

I'm resisting any temptation to flee my current school and take a job at a higher prestige school. I've got Limited Conference Movement selected, so I'm essentially hoping to move my school up the ladder, rather than my coach.

You've done pretty well Groundhog, I'm sure you'll start getting some good offers soon.

Prestige: 49

Recruit Class Ranking: 92

It wasn't the best recruiting year for me last season, but I managed to add some depth. 5 scholarship freshmen all up, varying from 3 to 1 star, but all with the ability to see substantial court time. The picks of the litter are likely my two Juco signings, PG Lydia Rugar (who I actually recruited two seasons ago when he didn't make the grades to play college ball) and SF Jamaal Morris who will likely redshirt this year. Also worth mentioning is true freshman PG Timothy Carmack, who will most likely be redshirted as well.

Athletic Director Goal: Win the conference championship.

I should achieve this. I lost two starters, a PF who was my best rebounder but a lousy offensive player, and a PG who was a great handler and passer but also not a scoring threat. These departures will hurt in the fore-mentioned areas, but I should recover.

The key will be sophomore PF Daron Evans, a Freshman All-American, and the only freshman to score over 20ppg last season. I'll need sophomore combo-guard Zdenek Richter (a 4-star recruit out of high school) to help pick up the scoring slack though, as well as the continued improvement of my quite deep wing positions.

In the paint though, every player not named Daron is a question mark. Sophomore Alvan Clayton was being groomed for the starting job last season until he tore his ACL, and he will miss a decent part of this season. That leaves McGinley and Heller, both freshmen, battling for the other spot. Neither is ready as yet. Another injury to my frontcourt and we are in serious trouble.

With just 2 scholarship players graduating this year (both of whom are bench players), I decide to focus on improving my frontcourt depth.

I originally targeted three 3-star players, 2 Cs and 1 PF. The guy I'm most keen for is 6-10 221lbs PF Joseph Martin, ranked the #104 guy in the nation. It quickly becomes apparent that I've got some competition for him, however he remains unsigned come November. I take back my scholorship offer though, as I doubt very much he'll take our offer over Providence's offer...

The second player I target is a C, but I decide to let him loose in November and will look for another player to focus on.

Our first signing however, is 6'9 238lbs Oscar Duda, a C out of nearby Newark city, NY. He is currently little more than a decent shooter close to the basket, but I hope that a few seasons down the track he can wind up a decent rebounder and post defender.

I try my luck with another C now, and offer a scholarship to a 6'10 C out of Oregon, ranked the #126 player in the nation. Chas Carroll is a High School All-American, but apparently is getting no love from the college scouts to be ranked out of the top 100.

2005-06 stats in brackets.

C - Sophomore PF, Daron Evans (20.1ppg, 6.9rpg, .488 fg%)

I'm looking for more of the same from Daron. However this year we don't have a rebounding machine next to him at PF, so he'll need to be pulling down more than 6.9 a game.

PF - Freshman PF, Daniel McGinley (N/A, 3-star recruit, #275 overall)

Sophomore PF Alvan Clayton is out another 32 days, so McGinley has the job until then. McGinley isn't going to score much, but we'll need him to rebound and block shots.

SF - Senior SF, Ray Wilkerson (5.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 10.8mpg)

Tough choice here. Wilkerson is a productive scorer, but turns the ball over like it's going out of style. I can see myself making some changes here through-out the season.

SG - Junior SG, Dave Hopper (7.3ppg, 2.6rpg, 1.6spg)

My first big recruit signing, Hopper is coming along nicely. He is a 10 out of 10 for steals, which makes up for his subpar perimeter D. Also posseses a nice jumper, but doesn't get to show it much with the ball going inside to Evans 90% of the time.

PG - Sophomore PG, Zdenek Richter (10.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.3apg, .444 3pt%)

My only top-100 recruit signing. This Czech sniper can nail the outside shot with the best of them, but isn't the natural PG I'm used to having at this position. Richter played SG last season, so we'll see how he goes at his 'natural' position.

----

Top Bench Players:

SG Terrance Chacon (6.3ppg last season) will resume his role as bench sparkplug. He can get to the hoop, nail the three, or pester the opposition's ball carrier with his quick hands.

Also of note is Juco transfer Lydia Rugar, who gives us some depth at PG. Rugar is a smooth ball handler and will get plenty of time if Richter can't adjust to PG. Sophomore SF David O'Donnell (4.6ppg, 2.6rpg) will push Wilkerson for the starting spot at SF all season long.

Boston University Terriers(0,0) vs. Morgan State Bears (0-0)

The Bears have steadily improved over the past three seasons, falling just one game shy of .500 last season. They also return 4 starters, none of whom averaged over 7.9ppg last season. This is clearly a team that played a down tempo style of offence last season, so we'll see if they take that approach again this year. Daron may have some trouble inside (Morgan State start two Cs and one PF in their frontcourt), but their backcourt should get eaten alive by mine.

Morgan State Starting 5

All stats are from last season.

C - Snr C, Daniel Wimer (5.0ppg, 10.1rpg, 1.1bpg)
PF - Jnr C, Brandon Jenkins (5.2ppg, 5.9rpg, .399 fg%)
SF - So PF, Jason Krause (6.9ppg, 2.5rpg, .378 fg%)
SG - Snr PG, Ryan Clymer (5.2ppg, .394 3pt%, 11.3mpg)
PG - Snr, PG, Eric Whitaker (7.9ppg, .302 3pt%)

We come out playing a 2-3 zone, with a mid-level pace and motion (emulating what we played for the majority of last season).

Tip Off

We win the tip, and SF Ray Wilkerson drains the three, which is the start of a quick scoring spree for Wilkerson, who after 5 mins has 7 of our team's 10 points. The rest of our players follow suit, and we enter the locker room with a decent 13 point lead.

Half Time, 34-21 Boston University

We are shooting the ball at just .407 compared to Morgan State's .421, and this is the only reason we aren't winning by more. We are out-boarding them 22-13 and have 6 steals to their 0.

Wilkerson didn't take another shot after his 7 point spree at the beggining of the match, but we are getting contributions from a lot of different guys.

Evans has 10 points on 4-10 shooting to lead the team.

Second Half

Well, despite getting ourselves in to a penalty situation with 14 minutes remaining in the half and a 20 points lead, we pull away to take this game in convincing fashion, 75-38. Not much to report really. Our players found their shots Morgan State couldn't keep up.

Final Score, Boston University over Morgan State, 75-38

We played about as well as I hoped we would. We doubled their rebounds, got tons of assists, found scoring options all over the place and got to the line.

Only real complaint I have is turnovers. We made a lot of careless errors, especially in the second half. We can't afford to make these mistakes against the kind of competition we will be facing in the coming months.

Player of the Game goes to Dave Hopper, who hasn't played that well in a game since his freshman year. I hope he can keep it up.

Boston University Terriers(1-0) @ Colgate Raiders(0-0)

The Red Raiders have just two starters back from last season's 15-14 squad. New Colgate head coach, John Mast, joins the team after helping guide Temple university to the Elite Eight last season as an assistant coach.
Both their returning starters are decent backcourt starters (for a Patriot league team, anyhow) but there frontcourt is untested. Despite the lack of returning starters, it is worth noting that their entire starting line-up are in their senior year.

Colgate Starting 5

All stats are from last season.

C - Snr C, Larry Straub (7.4ppg, 5.4rpg, 20.4mpg off the bench)
PF - Snr SF, Chad Teal (4.1ppg, 2.5rpg, 0.7spg)
SF - Snr SF, Joe Sanders (3.3ppg, 1.4rpg)
SG - Snr SG, Chris Struble (11.2ppg, 4.5rpg, .321 3p%)
PG - Snr PG, Roland Wolfgang (8.8ppg, 4.3apg, .380 3p%)

We come out playing a 2-3 zone, with a mid-level pace and motion.

Tip Off

We come out rather unimpressive. We keep feeding the ball inside to Evans, but he just can't get anything going against Straub's defence. Straub on the other hand is getting things done for Colgate, and 5 minutes down he is responsible for all five of their points, and Colgate lead 5-4.

As soon as Straub hits the bench, Evans goes on a tear, scoring 6 straight points. It becomes clear that we need to key in on Straub to win this game. With Straub on the bench, and some poor shooting by Boston University, the then 10 point lead is brought down to just 1 with 6 mins remaining in the half. We go on another tear though, getting it to 12 points, before Colgate SG Struble nails a three on the half time siren to make it a 9 point half-time Boston University lead.

Half Time, 45-36 Boston University

Offensively we are doing pretty well (hence the 45 points), but on defence we are allowing Colgate to shoot .591 from the floor, which is completely unacceptable. We are doing a good job of pressuring the ball, causing 13 turnovers to our 3 (incl. 8 steals), but we just need to get a hand in the face of the shooter. We will switch to a man-to-man D in the second half.

O'Donnell and Evans lead our team in scoring with 10 and 13 points respectively.

Struble and Straub have 9 each for Colgate.

Second Half

Thanks to some great play by backup PG Lydia Rugar, who has 7 points in the first 5 mins of the half, we climb out to a 20 point lead and the game quickly looks like it's turning in to a blow out. However, Straub and Colgate SF Joe Sanders take advantage of a horrendous Boston shooting slump to narrow the lead down to just 6. We keep looking to Evans, but he isn't hitting anything, and no one else looks brave enough to try and get something going.

It's clear that our man-to-man also isn't having the desired results, so we switch to a 3-2 zone.

Reserve SG Chacon re-enters the game, gets steal number 5, returns it for a slam dunk, and we get things going again. Final score is 81-67.

Final Score, Boston University over Colgate, 81-67

Once again I'm impressed with the number of scoring options we had this game, and our ability to force the turnover. What I'm not impressed with was our fouling, nor the fact that Zdenek attempted only 6 shots (the same amount as starting PF McGinley, who should really be attempting only 1 or 2 a game). I'd like Zdenek and his maxed out three point shooting to be taking about 5-6 threes a game, but he only attempted one today.

Player of the Game goes to Daron Evans, who had a nice game but continues to be incredibly streaky. Over one 5 minute stretch he'll hit 5 straight jump shots, and then miss his next 6. My personal Player of the Game would have been to either Rugar or Chacon for their support off the bench.

The Chanticleers have beaten Niagara and Campbell (both lower tier teams) on the road in what have been close games. They have been a 20-win team the past couple of seasons, and returned 4 starters from last year's squad. The best of the returnees is 7'0 Brian Abney. Abney has averaged 20.5 points over the first 2 games of the season and we'll really need to lock him down somehow. Most importantly though, can Evans score on Abney? Abney is the best big man Evans has gone up against since our NCAA tournament loss last season.

Outside of Anbey, Coastal Carolina's main threats are their wings. Mike Yamada isn't an outstanding shooter, but he can hit the jumper with enough regularity to keep the D honest, or he can get to the hoop due to his incredible foot speed. Kelvin Ely on the other hand has a strong mid-range jumpshot, and will hound our ballhandlers all night long with his quick hands.

My game plan on defence will be to try and limit Abney's scoring, and make them look to Ely and Yamada. If we can keep Abney to 10-15 points and not get burnt by their wings we should be fine.

As far as our offence is concerned, I'll stick with the 'get the ball to Evans' strategy early and see how it goes. If we can get Abney in foul trouble it'd be a tremendous boost. If this doesn't work out, I'll switch my focus to outside and see if Zdenek can't put some points on the board for the Terriers.

Coastal Carolina Starting 5

Stats are from this season.

C - Snr C, Brian Abney (20.5ppg, 4.5rpg, .625 fg%)
PF - Fr PF, Freeman Tindall (6.0ppg, 4.5rpg, * #951 recruit)
SF - Jnr SG, Mike Yamada (13.0ppg, 5.0rpg, .368 fg%)
SG - Jnr SG, Kelvin Ely (10.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 3.0spg)
PG - Jnr PG, Phil Vela (7.0ppg, 3.5rpg, 7.5apg)

We come out playing a 2-3 zone again, hoping it'll prove effective at blocking up the lane. Our motion and pace are again set to 5.

Tip Off

Evans wins the tip. We move the ball over the line, and Hopper hits Richter with the pass just above the free throw line. Richter pulls up with the jumpshot over Kelvin Ely, count it. Nice start.

The next 30 seconds don't go quite so well however, as Coast Car's PF nails a jump shot. Richter tries to rush it up court, and ends up throwing the ball to a lucky fan sitting near courtside. Coast Car inbound and get the ball to Yamada, who sinks the trey. Eek. 2-5 Coast Car.

Evans and Abney miss shots, Evans draws a foul and makes two free throws, and then Zdenek picks up foul #2 with 17:56 remaining. We sit him down and bring in juco PG Lydia Rugar, who has been having a good season thus far. He promptly picks up a foul for himself, and Hopper follows suit, so I tell my boys to back off a little with the pressure. We don't want a penalty situation with 15 mins left in the half.

That's exactly what we get however, with Evans fouling Abney with 15:25 remaining to get us our 7th team foul. Evans is playing well though, and sunk two straight short-range jumpers over Abney. Abney makes one of two foul shots, and it's 8-10 Coast Car.

Rugar brings the ball up, finds Evans inside, who muscles it up over Coast Car reserve C Joey Kelly for the basket and the foul! FT is no good however, 10-10 game.

The teams trade baskets (another FG for Evans, who now has 10 of our 12 points) before Rugar picks up his 3rd foul. Not happy with the call, he sends the ball flying in to the 5th row with the assistance of his Nikes, and picks up the technical... his 4th foul in 5 mins... unbelievable!

We bring Richter back in the game, who continues his bad luck. First getting his dunk attemp stopped by Abney, and then having the ball pried loose by his defender. And to cap off the hat trick, he picks up foul #3. We now have 12 team fouls with over 11 mins left. This could get ugly.

Thankfully, we get our offence going a little, as some players not named Evans get on the scorers sheet. We continue to do a nice job on Abney who has just 1 point in 12 minutes.

With 8 minutes left in the half, 23-20 Boston U., Abney recieves the ball on the baseline, goes up for the jumper and gets his shot swatted away by freshman PF Daniel McGinley. Big play for the freshman. We grab the loose ball, move it up court and Chacon takes it to the rack for a made basket and a foul, which he converts to a FTM. 25-20 Boston U.

As the half progresses, Chacon continues to light up the board with another three point play off a drive, followed shortly after by the other kind of three point play, a jump shot from behind the arc. Evans is also absolutely killing them inside, with 19 points, 7 of which have come from the foul line. Evans heads to the bench with his team up 38-25 with 4:23 remaining in the half. Abney still only has 1 point.

Both teams trade some baskets, Chacon makes another three, we make some more dumb fouls (including Rugar's 5th foul in just 6 minutes), and we enter the break up by 12.

Half Time, 45-33 Boston University

This is nearly the exact scoreline we walked in to the halftime huddle with last game, so I hope we end up with similar results come final siren. Offensively, Chacon, (6-6 FG, 3-3 3pt)with 16 points and Daron Evans' 19 points (6-10 FG, 7-11 FT) have been incredible. No one else on the team has more than 2 points. It's doubtful they'll keep it up, so we'll need to start seeing some scoring from the other guys. My PG situation is a little dire right now with Rugar fouled out, and Richter sitting on 4 fouls in just 5 minutes. We need a lot more out of Richter. He's been nearly invisible the past 2 games, and foul trouble is making it seem like that will be the case once again today.

Defensively our gameplan couldn't have gone a lot better for us at this stage. Abney has just 5 points and 2 fouls, Ely is scoreless and Yamada leads the team with 7. We expect them to come out looking for Abney, so I hope we can continue to clamp down on him.

I tell my boys just to keep up what they've been doing. I tell Evans to keep attacking the basket, but if he gets in trouble, look to make the pass out to the perimeter. There's no point forcing things, especially not with the quality of shooters we have out there on the court.

Second Half

We come out fast, but Hopper misses a jumper and Coast Car make us pay with Tindall scoring his 8th point of the match. We turn it over again, and Coast Car look for their big man in the post. Abney gets the ball, spins right and attempts the fade away, but once again McGinley will have nothing of it and swats that shot away! Abney shakes his head in frustration and jogs up the court on D.

We get the ball to Evans who misses the short jumper. McGinley boards it and we work it round to O'Donnell who misses the J. Richter goes for the tip-in but we waste another opportunity...

Coast Car bring it backup court and get it to Ely who looks to attack the basket. He gets inside the key, takes off looking for the lay-up, but once again McGinley sends him packing! 3 blocks for the bigman! We move the ball up court and find Richter who sinks his first trey of the night.

We begin to trade baskets again, but I find myself a little worried as Coast Car PG Vela is on a bit of a tear, scoring three straight baskets to bring the lead down to 10. We call timeout and give our guys a breather. We need to come up with some stops and give ourselves a bit of a buffer.

Alas, Coast Car work the ball inside and Abney and Tindall are up to the task, and it's soon a 6 point game. I wipe the cold sweat off my forehead and tell my guys to plug up that lane.

We bring it up court and find Wilkerson alone behind the arc, and he nails the three. 9 point lead with 13 mins remaining.

As we continue to trade baskets, we notice Abney is getting a little more comfortable out there for Coast Car. He grabs some boards, sinks a basket, and then makes a three point play to bring it down to a 7 point lead. We've got to keep him from finding a rhythm or we could be in some trouble.

Sure enough, Hopper attempts to float in a soft jumper from inside the key, but Abney is there to swat it away. They can't convert on the opportunity at the other end however, and we call a time out. 62-55 Boston U. with 9:35 remaining.

I tell my guys that we need to lift the intensity on offence. We are in a bit of shooting funk right now, and we need to start looking for some smart shots. I increase our motion to 7, hoping that the extra pass will lead to a better shot. I also bring Richter in at SG with Chacon at the PG, hoping that this will get Richter some shots.

What it does do is get Chacon some more big shots, as he nails THREE threes in a row to give us a 15 point lead with 7:42 remaining. You can see the look of dissapointment on the faces of Coast Car's players. This game looks to be slipping out of their reach. They call their last timeout and their coach tries to rally his troops to attempt the unlikely comeback.

The comeback never eventuated however, and Boston U. walk away with the 82-64 win.

Final Score, Boston University over Coastal Carolina, 82-64

I pat the guys on the back as we walk in to the lockerroom. I expected this to be a much closer match than it ended up being, and we have the hot hands of Chacon and Evans to thank for that.

Chacon ended up an incredible 10-12 from the field, and an even more incredible 6-6 from long range for his 27 points and Player of the Game honors.
Evans did most of his damage in the first half, but showed he can hold his own against a guy like Abney.

As for the rest of the team, well no one else really stood out offensively, but when you have Chacon and Evans playing like they did you don't need anyone else taking the ball out of their hands.

On defence, our woeful fouling issues aside, we did a good job. I wanted to keep Abney to 10-15 points, and even though he scored 18, a lot of those were in garbage time. At the end of the first half we had allowed him only 5 points, and this was the main reason (I feel, anyhow) behind our big half time lead. Neither Ely (who was held scoreless) nor Yamada gave us too much trouble, either.

There are smiles all around our lockerroom, the widest smile of all belonging to Chacon. I pull McGinley aside as the players are leaving the lockerroom and commend him on a great performance. He's filling in admirably at PF for the injured Clayton. What he lacks in scoring ability he has more than made up for in his shot blocking and rebounding.

Aye, I'd never really heard much about BU in real life until I started up this franchise, but I've been following them pretty closely for a month or so. They have a good team and are in a good position to take the American East, especially consider they only lost by 2 to Vermont.

Boston University Terriers(3-0) vs. McNeese State Cowboys(2-1)

The Cowboys defeated Praire View A&M & Southern University at home to start the season, by 20 and 22 points respectively, before falling to Campbell University by 12 on the road. We'll be hoping they have similar success (or lack of) on the road today.

McNeese State head coach Ward Brown got this team to the NCAA Tournament last season, but returns just one starter, PG Gregorio Lozano. Lozano is the second leading scorer on the team with 11.7ppg and also grabs 4.3rpg and 4.3apg. He is an assassin from long range and plays the passing lanes well.

Outside of Lozano, wing player Andy Williams has been putting up 12.3ppg over the first three games of the season. He is also a threat from long range. Junior big man Antoine Padilla is the third and final guy putting up double-digit scoring, with 11.3 points a night.

McNeese St have so far focused on winning games with their defence, having allowed only 49.7PPG (#20 in the nation). However, scoring has not come easy for them and they are putting up just 59.7PPG(#259 in the nation). The key will be just to contain their three 10+PPG players and try and outscore them.

The 6'11 Antoine Padilla could prove a problem for Daron, due to his strength and shotblocking, but Daron fared decently against Brian Abney last game, and Padilla is not quite at Abney's level overall.

Though strong ballhandlers, McNeese St's backcourt lacks any real stoppers on defence, so I hope my guards (especially Richter) can step it up and put some points on the board.

McNeese State Starting 5

Stats are from this season.

C - Jnr C, 6'11 270lbs Antonie Padilla (11.3ppg, 8.3rpg, 3.7bpg)
PF - Fr PF, 6'11 298lbs Kevin Green (9.0ppg, 10.3rpg, * #723 recruit)
SF - Jnr SG, 6'6 204lbs Andy Williams (12.3ppg, 3.0rpg, .455 3pt%)
SG - Snr PG, 6'2 194lbs Parker Petersen (3.0ppg, 2.3apg, .333 fg%)
PG - Snr PG, 6'1 174lbs Gregorio Lozano (11.7ppg, 4.3rpg, 4.3apg)

Once again, we'll start off with a 2-3 zone and a 5 for motion and and pace. We put a double team on Lozano too, as well feel he is most likely to cause us trouble.

Tip Off

We lose the tip, and McNeese St's freshman PF Green quickly launches a three, which hits the front of the rim and is boarded by BU SF Wilkerson. Wilkerson gets it to Evans, who is trapped near the sideline. Evans can't get a pass off, and we need to call timeout to hold on to possession of the ball.We inbound the ball, get it to Wilkerson who nails the three from the right wing.

McNeese St bring it up court, SG Petersen drives in to the key, kicks it out to PF Green, who takes his second three of the game, this time with a little more success. 3-3.

Hopper follows up with a mid-range jumper, we get a stop (McNeese St SF Williams travels with the ball), and Evans gets his first points of the night on a short jumper to put us up 7-3. McNeese guard Petersen tries to get the ball over the midcourt marker, but finds himself the victim of a trap. McGinley pries the ball loose (I really love this guy. If he aint blocking shots and grabbing rebounds, the 6'10 PF is harrassing PGs for steals!), and Wilkerson has his second basket of the night. McNeese St call a time out before things get too out of hand.

The teams trade baskets, before McGinley gets his second steal of the night. We can't convert the steal in to a basket though, and McNeese take it up court to try and narrow the lead. A careless pass by Andy Williams sees us get our 4th steal of the game, this time Daron Evans, who then draws the foul on Padilla.

A couple of turnovers by both teams, and then Evans gets his shot swatted away by Padilla, who puts two points on the board for his team at the other end. Evans tries to take it straight back at Padilla, but gets his dunk attempt rejected as well! McNeese St move the ball up court and Andy Williams sinks a three to make it 11-10 BU! I call time out. Time to talk things over and work out what we are doing wrong. I'm a little worried about Evans... I hope Padilla's shotblocking doesn't take him out of the game.

Straight away we turn it over again on a careless pass by Richter. We get it back, and Evans challenges Padilla once again, only to be greeted by a familiar result as his shot is greeted by Padilla's palm! Both teams miss some shots, and Evans finds himself denied by Padilla an incredible two more times... I think I need to start looking to my wings... Evans however manages to sink a hook shot over Padilla, drawing the foul and sinking the FT.

As soon as Padilla hits the bench Evans comes alive, making back to back baskets. 20-16 BU with 7:44 remaining.

We fall victim to a rare turnover in the backcourt, as McNeese St PG Lozano snatches the ball out of Rugar's hands and scores on the fast break layup. We respond with authority however, with Wilkerson taking it in strong for the two handed jam, drawing the foul and making the FT.

With the score at 27-20 BU, Rugar fouls PF Kevin Green as he is going for a shot, and then picks up his second technical foul in as many games for arguing the call! That kid needs to learn to keep his cool... Thankfully, McNeese St make just 1 of 4 from the line, and it's BU's ball.

Richter and Wilkerson both connect from long range, and it's a 33-21 BU scoreline with 2:53 remaining.

Unfortunately, we finish the half off with three dumb plays in a row. First of all, O'Donnell loses the ball to McNeese St guard Petersen who takes it back and dunks on Richter at the other end, draws the foul and makes the FT. We inbound the ball, Petersen gets the steal once again (this time out of the hands of Richter), takes it back and draws the foul on Richter once again. Nails both FTs. So, 6 seconds remaining, we bring it up court, Heller gets called for an illegal screen as he tried to free Chacon up for a shot. McNeese State gets two FTs, make them both.... groan... 37-36 BU at the half.

Half Time, 37-36 Boston University

Things were going splendidly until those last three turnovers yielded Mcneese State 7 points in 30 seconds. Petersen just killed us. I give my guys an earful, Richter in particular. He is well and truly starting this season off on the wrong foot.

Outside of the last 30 seconds of the half, our offence had been playing well. Wilkerson (who has 4 fouls) has 11 points and Evans has scored 12, though has had 4 shots blocked by Padilla. We won't make any changes here. Even if Evans keeps getting blocked, we need to keep riding that horse. This team has had a tendancy both this season and last to play about as well as Evans can carry them. If he has an off night, it generally means a loss.

On defence we haven't done a great job on Lozano, who has sunk a couple of threes, and leads the team with 12. Petersen has 8 points for them as well, 5 of which were scored in the last 30 seconds of the half. We won't look to make changes here, as we were starting to slow them down before that last lapse....

Second Half

We start off slow, and pick up three quick fouls, one of which sends Wilkerson to the bench for the rest of the game with 5 fouls. Eek. I really shouldn't have had him out there.

Reserve forward Larry Smith nails a jump shot for McNeese State to give them the first lead of the match, 37-38 McNeese St. It's short lived though as Evans hits the inside shot down the other end.

With the score level at 40 Evans sinks a jumper from the baseline, and draws foul number four on Padilla! He misses both FTs, but sends Padilla to the bench. We manage to grab the offensive board, and Richter hits Evans who makes up for the misses with the easy basket inside.

The teams trade baskets, but Lozano is begining to heat up, with two threes to bring the score to 49-48 BU, with 13:20 remaining. We just can't seem to pull away.

I call time out to give my boys a breather. I tell Rugar to stick to Lozano like glue, I don't want him hitting those threes like they are layups.

The guys walk away from the huddle, inbound the ball to Rugar who nails the long three. Nice. McNeese St try to work it inside, but Heller rejects the shot. McNeese maintain possession however, and work it around to Petersen, who is open and sinks the three... damn it. I call out and tell the guys to abandon the zone and play Man.

Both teams take turns to turn the ball over, before we work it inside to Evans who makes the basket and draws the foul. McNeese State forward Felicien Delannoy isn't happy with the call, and draws the tech foul! O'Donnell sinks both FTs for the tech foul, though Evans doesn't connect on his FT. 56-51 BU, 12:11 remaining.

We trade baskets again, and Rugar turns it over in the backcourt for an easy McNeese State basket, so we bring back in Richter. Richter wastes no time (1 second, in fact) in picking up foul #5 and it's good night to him, and we are in the penalty.

McNeese guard Andy Williams finds the easy basket off a nice pass from Lozano, and it's 60-60 with 10:55 to play.

Evans draws a foul, makes one of two FTs, then Hopper picks up two straight steals, turning one into a three pointer by Chacon, and laying it in off the fast break with the second pick. 66-60 BU. 10:33 remaining. 6 points in 22 seconds, not bad at all.. and McNeese call time.

We begin to pull away a little, as Evans scores point #30 on a short range jumper. O'Donnell fouls Andy Williams, who goes to the line to try and decrease McNeese's St's 8 points defecit. He misses, and it's 70-62 BU with 7:26 remaining. It proves a costly miss, as Heller pulls down the board, gets it inside to Evans, who senses the double team coming and kicks it out to the open O'Donnell who has no problems knocking down the three! McNeese use their final timeout, as coach Brown tries to get his Cowboys back in to the game.

His players respond as Andy Williams sinks the three. 8 point BU lead with 6:25 remaining.

The Cowboys have no answer for Evans or our outside shooting however, and we pull away for the 87-73 victory. It is worth noting that on the last play of the game, Evans attempted a shot as time expired from inside the key and got rejected by Padilla an incredible fifth time!

Final Score, Boston University over McNeese State, 87-73

It's hard to not be happy with a 14 point victory, but I'm a little concerned that it took us 35 minutes to put the game in the bag. Their backcourt, led by Lozano's 25 points, did better than I think we should have allowed.

Our turnovers were a huge problem as well. Rugar's 5 turnovers is a particular worry, coming in only 17 mins court time. That's not what you want from a PG.

As for the positive side of things, well, Evans showed once again he can bring it. Despite getting his shot swatted away 5 times by Padilla, he helped get him in to foul trouble and dominated Padilla's backups. 37 points ties Evan's career high, and he was 1 board away from a double double.

We shot 7-10 from long range, and .533 overall, compared to their .480. We outboarded them 38-29, and ended with less turnovers.

Game ball goes to Evans obviously, and we are now 4-0! Up next is 1-2 Troy State, before our big matchup with Boston College..

Jeez, didn't realise I had written so much...

If anyone is reading this, what do you prefer. The briefer game summaries, or the longish summary above?

I am just skimming through the detail myself, but the longer summaries are certainly not a deterrent, if you enjoy writing them that way go for it.
