View Full Version : IMPORTANT: Key points about the new version of vB

There are a ton of things different in vB3, so I'm sure there will be lots of questions as everybody tries to become familiar with it. I will try to mention a few of the most commonly voiced questions/concerns/complaints here to tide everybody over for the evening. :)
1. If you miss the old "threaded" method of viewing message boards, there is now the option to do so here. At the top of a thread, click the "Display Modes" drop-down and choose your preference. However, to achieve this functionality, the "Quick Reply" is a little different. No longer can you simply click in the QR box and start typing. Instead, you have to click the appropriate icon in the post you are actually replying to (to quote or not to quote it is at your discretion). This is so that the threaded view will actually make sense.
2. If you don't like the WYSIWYG toolbar (keyboard commands work, too), you can revert to the old standard toolbar as an individual preference. In fact, as a general rule, if you really don't like something that's changed, check your user options to see if you can adjust it there. In many cases, you can.
3. There are no style options yet. This version of the code is very stable, but is not "Gold". So large-scale hacking in the vB community is just now getting started. I imagine someone will upload some basic alternatives soon, but for now, learn to love what you see. On the bright side, it's far easier on the eyes than the old vB default scheme (purple and yellow).
More to come I'm sure....

My main question is "what are the benefits of the new version?"
Presumably this does some things better than the older version... do we have any sense of what those things are?

I'd love an answer to QuikSand's question because, presumably there must have been some killer reason to do this.
At least I hope so, because the default configuration is one of the worst looking things I've ever seen.

I see an option to display or not display avatars in your profile. That should always us to use them, if we want.

The main reasons for the upgrade were:
1 - vBulletin will be withdrawing support for vBulletin 2 sometime soon.
2 - There are far more configurable features on this board.
3 - vB 3 is easier on the server than vB 2
4 - I have found it painful browsing a vB 2 forum after using a vB3 forum for months over at the FOBL.
Simms can probably give you more details, as he has been admin of a vB 3 board for months.

Width issue should be fixed now.

Simms,
Can we get the name info up on top of each post (as opposed to the left) a la FOBL (http://www.thefobl.com/forums/index.php?)?
I can't remember if that was an user option or if it was a global option. If it's global, than never mind unless others prefer it that way also.

It's a global option by default, but there's a *very* small code modification we can make to make it a user option. I imagine either Ryan or I will install it shortly.

Like the new board guys... more customization is good. I especially love the Quick Reply box, which I've been using for a while on other forums I post on :D.

Is the new board's feature different from the old board's in some way that I haven't noticed yet?

It gives you a few more formatting options right there, instead of just plain replies.

Yeah, I have no idea how this helps me, but man I am just glad everything went well. :) Great job to Ryan S and Simms.

Can I get a Sideline?
This new skin is not as easy on the eyes.

Ryan has that one up for us. Look at the very bottom of any page and you'll see where you can change it... :)

hmm. the yellow layout looks good colorwise... however, on the thread pages (like this one) the borders are gone but on the list of threads it's there. Could that be adjusted?

<strike>How do you see which threads you've posted in? The black dot's aren't there any more...</strike>
Never mind, I just saw them... carry on... nothing to see here... :o

It will take awhile to get used to the new layout, but once I do, I think it will be much better:)

Wow, glad for that. I hated the blue, sterile default.

Yeah, I'd also like that red and yellow scheme.. I think it was called sideline.Blasphemer. The Sideline is the wonderfully easy on the eye green with light colour text (even if the green in this iteration seems darker than before - damn, I'm nitpicky). The red-and-yellow is FOFC.

Oh, yeah . . . as an aside, this new version looks nice. I'm sure I'll find even more to like as I get more familiar to it. Thank you all for your work, Ryan. Not sure if anyone else besides Ryan had to get their hands dirty but if anyone did, than to you as well.

The only thing I don't like about the new version is that our signatures are too close to our messages. Any way to put some space at the bottom of messages, other than manually (which I'm going to try right now)?

There is probably not much point in reinstating that, as the recent change in post counts has made this stat pretty much useless. Anyway, there is a chance that post counts may completely disappear.....

Someone should change the message on the home page that the boards are down.

I LOVE the WYSIWYG editor option, particularly in light of the fact that the Word hotkeys for bold, underline and italics work. Nice.

Patience grasshopper. I will try to get the all of the old ones back up, right now A Day At The Office is almost complete (just waiting for some image uploads).
They will all look nice in the new format.

Could you believe something such as sig being close your text was even a template mod? Yes, it isn't out yet for vb3 but I am sure it will be, it keeps the sig at the bottom of the postbit, so it solves what you are talking about essentially. :) All in time.

But then how would newbies know how much they should respect JeeberD and look up to him?
