By the way, if your timber hasn't been shivered since then, in NO WAY should you be in charge of anything interior.

Pirate wedding party goes bad

By ANDREW WOLFE, Telegraph Staff
wolfea@telegraph-nh.com

Published: Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004

NASHUA - The bride’s uncle pulled a pistol on the groom and best man, who were role-playing as pirates during a wedding reception at the Bounty Lounge late Saturday night, police said.

Gerard Moccia, 55, of Medford, Mass., was arrested about 45 minutes later on two felony counts of criminal threatening, Detective Sgt. Andrew Lavoie said. Moccia was a guest at the wedding, which was followed by a pirate-themed reception at the Bounty Lounge at the Holiday Inn on Northeastern Boulevard, Lavoie said.

As part of the reception, the groom and best man were to burst into the lounge and “take over” the large-scale pirate ship model that graces the lounge, a former nightclub now used as a function room, Lavoie said. The bride was on or near the ship at the time, he said.

The two men wore tuxedos, but they had put on eye patches and wielded plastic toy swords to play their part as pirates, Lavoie said.

Moccia encountered the two swashbucklers in a hallway outside the lounge at about 10:15 p.m., and challenged them, saying something about the men thinking they were tough, or words along those lines, Lavoie said. “For whatever reason, he decided to take exception to them,” Lavoie said.

Moccia pulled out a handgun and aimed it at the two men after exchanging words, Lavoie said. No one was hurt, he said.

“He directly pointed it right at two people’s faces,” Lavoie said, aiming at one and then the other.

Several people saw the incident, and witnesses and the two men identified Moccia, Lavoie said. Moccia went to his room at the Holiday Inn after the confrontation, and police arrested him there at about 11:30 p.m., Lavoie said.

Moccia later posted $5,000 bail, and was released pending arraignment Friday in Nashua District Court. The charges against him are felonies, punishable by up to 3˝ to seven years in prison.

I'm stopping, but it's because I'm merciful, not because I can't think of any more. And there are other parallels besides just the linguistic ones. Gangstahs have '64 Impalas with 20" Blades; pirates have sloops loc'ed out with 8" cannons. Gangstahs have gats; pirates have cutlasses. Gangstahs have gold teeth; pirates have peg legs and eye patches. Again, I'm stopping because I'm nice.

It has been a life-long dream to start the first Pirate Rap band, which would take advantage of the combined bad-assitude, homocidal mania, and parent-annoyingness of inner city hoodlums and 18th-century privateers. I'm not sure about the name. Maybe something like "Da Yellowbeardz" or something. Actually, I once came pretty close to forming the band in college. My roommate and I were discussing how much Hamm's you would need to drink before cutting off your leg below the knee and sticking a thick peg in the bloody stump suddenly changed from a good idea in the abstract into a fantastic idea right now (four), when I saw a flyer on a telephone pole advertising a free show. When I saw the third band on the list, my heart mutinied. I can't remember what they were called, but the one-line description of their music was this:

The Originators of Piratecore

There really aren't any good ideas left.

Pirate talk days unearth a treasure trove of ideas

By Greg Elwell
The Oklahoman

For a landlocked state, Oklahoma has a lot of pirates.

Sixteen schools claim the keelhauling scurvy dogs as mascots, but only a few have confirmed their participation in today’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Putnam City High School Principal Don Wentroth said it will be his school’s first year to take part in the celebration of “pirate-speak.”

“A couple of my teachers brought it up last year, but we couldn’t pull everything together then,” he said. “Yar, but this year, it falls on our homecoming week.”

The Putnam City Pirates will take on the Lawton High School Wolverines on Friday. Wentroth said it’s the perfect time to boost students’ spirits with nautical lingo.

The school will hold a Talk Like a Pirate contest. The winner will make school announcements for the week and enjoy dinner and the football game from the “penthouse” of the stadium press box, he said.

Wentroth said he hopes to make today’s observation a yearly event for the school.

In Keyes, school superintendent Richard Gleave has authorized a day full of piratical activities.

The announcements will be done in pirate talk. The elementary students will play piratethemed games in physical education class, school secretary Charla Gleave said. High school students will help elementary students make eye patches.

Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers, who helped found International Talk Like a Pirate Day with his friend John “Ol’ Chumbucket” Baur, said he has heard from many schools where teachers make it a part of the curriculum for the day.

Teachings include the migration of civilizations by sea, how to use storage space and figure out the amount of supplies necessary for a four-month journey and how sea-faring language has worked its way into the vernacular.

“Pirates are loved by young and old alike, and our ‘interpretation’ of them as whimsical, mischievous scalawags resonates at any age,” Summers said.

He said actual historic pirates did lots of bad things, too.

“But we are celebrating mythology over history,” Summers said. “Remember, it’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day, not International Commit Felonies Like a Pirate Day.”

For more information on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, go to www.TalkLikeaPirate.com.
