View Full Version : Do you have an XBox, PS2, or GameCube

I'm contemplating taking the plunge and getting a console. PS2 is leading the way (kids have PS1, more games - kid friendly and otherwise, not being able to import NCAA draft into Madden for Xbox - so far). I was curious what the breakdown is here at FOFC. I apologize if this has been done before.
Which do you have? XBox, PS2, GameCube? Multiple?
I will omit PC's as a choice since you are reading this on an internet message board.

I have an X-box and PS2...my room mate has a gamecube. When the X-box first came out I would have said for someone to get a PS2 but now that X-box has quite a few good games I would say it is probably the better buy.

I got a PS2 quite awhile ago, but mainly only play spots games and such on it (though they do have a couple good exclusive titles. My 'Cube get's a bit more playing time though since it has several great single player titles. I always love the quality of Nintendo-made games. But that's just me...

I have a ps2 and Gamecube, hit ps2 because I am selling the Gamecube (my daughter won it and doesn't play it at all).
A guy at Gamestop told me Sony bought (or about to buy) EA, don't know if it's true, but he said this might be the last year for Madden on the Xbox.??
Get the console that has the games you want. The kids can play ps1 games on the ps2 as well as DVD's though. I don't buy into the console wars, if you have a HDTV, the Xbox should look unreal. I love my ps2, but I also loved my ps1.

No, Sony didn't buy EA unless it's happened in the last 2 hours and hasn't been reported yet (pretty unlikely). However, EA sports games will be online for PS2 only this year- part of an exclusivity agreement.
I definately second the paragraph, and this is more or less how it breaks down:
if you like FPSs and Sports, get the Xbox
if you like RPGs and a pretty decent selection of other stuff, go PS2
if you like platformers, adventure, and great single player content, go Gamecube
I find the Xbox much too limited in what I like so I have a Gamecube and will probably get a PS2 towards the end of its life cycle much like I did with the PSX and N64 last generation. I didn't have either until a couple of years before the end of their cycles when I got a PSX for RPGs and a friend sold me his N64 for gas money.

I'll get the Cube when Mario Kart comes out, almost exclusively for playing that game.
As for me, I have both a PS2 and an XBOX, but since I really only play sports games on my console (overall the only games I play are sports ones and management/sim games, can't get into the shooters anymore), I use my XBOX alot more than my ps2 (gathering dust). The use of a hard drive, better graphics (I have an hd set, the monster component cables look amazing), and the faster loads all at the same price make it a no brainer.

Isiddiqui,
I wish I could say the same. I much rather play PC sports games, but unfortunately , all the software is going to the console side. While EA sports still puts out all 4 major sports for the PC, no sega sports is really a drawback.
I'd love to see graphical sports games make a comeback on the PC, but in todays society of "plug and play" nobody even wants to spend 5 minutes to install software anymore. That and the programmers don't feel like programming for the plethora of hardware configs out there.

I'm another that doesn't own any console, happy with the pc.
I bought a N64 a few years ago (as a wedding present to myself, I think that was the moment my wife realized what a complete geek she was marrying) but I never used it, so haven't bought any other consoles. Wasn't even tempted til Star Wars KOTOR, but I can wait for the pc version.

Don't you even get the urge to play a little ncaa2004 once in a while. Even if you don't want to "play" the game, the manage only part of it is pretty great. The management options in ncaa 2004 are almost as good as tcy in my opinion. I think alot of people on here feel the same way.

He might want to , but that alone isn't worth getting a console for.
To be honest, I don't even use my consoles for anything else other than 1. Nfl2k3 online (espn football) with my close friends 2. ncaa 2004 3. Madden (in that order)
I love baseball, but I never really get into any console baseball games, the way I get into ootp5. If they had a manage only option , I'd be all over a console game, but none have a good one. All star baseball is the only one and it does a terrible job at manage only.

Philliesfan, I keep updating my PC enough to play the CRPGs I want to try (Lionheart is next on the list, even though I dislike the combat model in the demo) as well as the occasional FPS (*drool* Half Life 2), so I'm spending a bunch on my PC, no cash for a console, really.

Mizzourah, the problem seems to be more with gameplay than "graphical" issues. You say watch out.. but is that because of better gameplay, or better graphics? At this point, I'm satisfied with video game graphics. Now I want them to start adding the managerial aspects so we can have a "ootp" type game with graphics. I eventually want this done for all sports games. I don't see how we're that far off in that department either.

I agree ISiddiqui. Since you don't own a console, MVP came out this year for the PC by EA sports, which was alot better than their old product, Triple Play. I think MVP has potential, and I hope that they keep on adding features.

I think gameplay will improve as well. Madden's gameplay is best thus far, imo. Look how far it has come, we have an owner mode this year. Baseball will only get better and have graphics to boot.
There is also an exercise bike for the ps2 that has racing games, I want to check this out.

I have a PS2 and a gamecube. GameCube is the worst purchase I've made in the last 5 years. I've gotten about 30 minutes of play time out of it. I don't see any games on the Xbox that would make it worth the expense for me. I only buy 3 or 4 games a year but I play the hell out of them. Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Madden, NBA Street, and this year NCAA... all can be done sufficiently on the PS2 so I'll save my money :)

Radii - if you're a mainstream gamer, then no, the 'Cube isn't gonna be worth a damn for you.
If you like more eclectic titles, such as Ikaruga, then the GameCube is definitely worth owning, because some of the more obscure titles you can find on 'Cube, and nowhere else.

Actually, you had it right before the parenthetical interjection.
I paid $300 for my Xbox on 11/15/01, $200 for my GameCube on 11/18/01, and $350 for my PS2 in late October of 2000, and that doesn't take CA state sales tax into account for any of the hardware.
As far as accessories go, here's the breakdown on what I've spent:
PS2
2nd controller: $25
Network adapter: $40
Two memory cards: $50
16 megabyte memory booster: $20
Monster extension cable: $30
Monster S-video cable: $45
Total spent: $560
Xbox
Additional original controllers: $120
S controllers: $60
Memory card: $25
Xbox Live: $50
Monster component cable: $60
Total spent: $615
GameCube
Additional regular controllers: $50
Wavebird: $35
Memory card 59: $15
Two Memory Card 251's: $40
Game Boy Player: $50
Total spent: $390
So the total spent on all three platforms plus accessories since late 2000 comes out to about $1565. That's really only around $500/year, on average. It helps that, as a game reviewer, I get most of my games for free. That's why, in fact, I can spend that extra $400 on the 'Cube instead of buying games for the other platforms, because I'm never hurting for something to play.
That total is likely to go up in the near future, though, since my Xbox died 3 or 4 days ago, and I need to get a new one to replace it. :(

Yeah, well, my first PS2 (from launch, no less) lasted 15 months. Bought it in late October of '00, it was dead by early January of '02.
My Xbox, dead though it be, lasted from mid-November of '01 to mid-August of '03. That still beats my first PS2's lifespan by, what, six months?

Well if you more or less only like sports games, then of course you won't like the GameCube. I mean it has some of the same games as PS2 (albeit with better graphics), but the controller just isn't suited for them.
I have all 3 consoles and I seldom buy anything but PS2 games. The X-Box isn't even hooked up to a TV anymore because I don't like the controllers at all (my hands cramp up when I play the X-Box for any length of time - although that might be old age as much as the controller :D). The Gamecube is upstairs and only gets used when I have friends or family visiting with children. The Gamecube was basically what I expected and I'd buy it again. It's nice having 2 consoles when you have a lot of guests and the games I have for the Gamecube are great for kids. The X-Box I wouldn't buy again. I got it thinking there would be a rush of X-Box only games that I would want to have since Microsoft seemed at the time to be signing deals with all kinds of game companies and it was marketed towards more adult gamers which I liked. Those games just never materialized for me. I don't know if there are X-Box exclusive games coming down the pipe or not, but at this point I've been pretty disappointed with that purchase.

I bought my Cube in a fit of compulsion when all my friends in IRC that i talk to every day were gushing about how amazing Zelda and Metriod were. I knew better but I did it anyway :) I have interests outside of sports games but they are few and far between... Final Fantasy X was amazing, for example, but normally I don't get into RPGs... why that one was different I don't know.

Yeah, there's plenty of Xbox exclusive stuff, but granted, it is going to depend on your tastes. If you own a console for sports games, then while the Xbox does kick ass with those, only the first party ones are exclusive. If you're looking for RPGs, there are several phenomenal ones in the pipeline, including 2 or 3 exclusives, plus the console-exclusive Knights of the Old Republic, which is also quite awesome.
Thing is, the shape the industry is in right now means that 'exclusive' is likely to only ever be a limited thing anymore. Companies just can't afford to put all their eggs in one basket, so even IF a game is exclusive to a console, it's usually only for a short while.
Hell, even GTA is coming to Xbox this fall.

I got my PS2 at launch and it's been arguably the best purchase I've ever made (ok, so I'm 20.) Never really been tempted to buy an X-Box except for when KOTOR came out but as said earlier I'll probably just pick it up for the PC.
I bought the Gamecube a little while back but after I beat Zelda and got a lot of hours into Metroid, I had no use for it so I traded it in.

Marmel, I have thing that I can plug four consoles into, and press a button depending on which I want to use at the time. It's pretty cool. I have my PS2, GameCube, N64 and SNES hooked into it now. And my TV has two places to plug in A/V cables, so I have my Dreamcast hooked up to the second set. I also have my NES hooked up to it via an RF switch.

Little of both. Up until this past Christmas, I had my Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, and GameCube hooked up through a switchbox to the one set of open A/V inputs on the 25" TV downstairs.
Parents gave me a $400 gift card to Best Buy as one of my Christmas gifts, and I used my nifty discount there to pick up a 27" Wega that has two sets of A/V inputs, an S-video input, and a component input. What I do now is hook the GameCube up to the A/V in in the front of the Wega, and I have a set of Monster S-video PS2 cables and Monster component Xbox cables plugged into the Wega, with the A/V cables hooked up to the switchbox downstairs for those two systems. I also left the original GameCube A/V cable down there and bought a new one for the upstairs TV. That way if we have company and I need to bring the systems downstairs for entertainment purposes, they're easily hooked back up.
But, yeah, to sum up, when they're downstairs, I use a switchbox, when they're upstairs, they each have their own input on the Wega that they're hooked up to, so I just have to switch between Video 1-4 on the TV.

Thanks Todd. I actually looked at the used ($149.99) and refurbished ($159.99) PS2's at GameStop the other day.
Anyone have any feedback on used vs. refurbished vs. new? I'd like to save $20-30 and put it toward an additional controller.

If you want to buy consoles. Do what I did. Put them on layaway at Wal-Mart. Best $800+ I ever spent. Of course, I didn't put them all on at once. I put one on, than got a little extra cash and paid it off right away. Put another on, paid for it in a few weeks. At the same time, I had a little extra cash. So I used that and put the rest of the third on the charge card. Had all the systems within about two months.

Or you could put that money in a CD.... Well, in todays market, I guess it doesn't make much sense, but when it was paying 6% on freaking internet banking sites, it was a good idea.
I just don't see the point in layaway.. for rare products that you really want to hold on, yes I can see the point. But am I missing something here: You don't get the product until the balance is paid in full correct?

That is correct. The store holds the product.
But, with layaway there is no interest. You're not going into debt. If you want to cancel, you can get a refund.
The product is ready when you want it. This is handy for holiday buys of hot items. Put Xbox on layaway in Sept. and be guaranteed to have one at Christmas.
You're protected if the price goes up and get the difference if it drops.
It's so much better than always using a credit card, mainly for the idea that you can cancel anytime. And you don't get it until you can truly afford it and its paid for.
True you could put it into a CD, but that's 6-12 months minimum. Layaway is usually about 8 weeks (sometimes 12).
BTW ... A few years ago Michael Jordan and his mother were on Oprah. MJ, even with all his riches, still puts stuff on layway -- at Kmart. His mother told him to avoid debt, because despite the riches you never knwo when it will go away.

I guess other than the price protection guarantee, its not better than just putting your money in a shoebox under your bed!
But I do agree with you that I never use my credit card for frivalous purchases. I can proudly say that I've never been in credit card debit in my life. Car Debt, School Debt yes, but cc debt no.

Problem with the shoebox is the money is there and easy to snag. Meaning you buy something else you don't need, rather than saving.
With layaway, you are at least putting your money towards the product and if you need the money still have to go through the process.

But I do agree with you that I never use my credit card for frivalous purchases. I can proudly say that I've never been in credit card debit in my life. Car Debt, School Debt yes, but cc debt no.

Marc, how much would I have to bribe you to get a version of CM that'll run on an American Xbox? ;)
The only way to do it is to chip your box I'm afraid.
I was very disappointed when CM ended up region restricted for the Xbox and I did everything possible to try and prevent it - unfortunately to make a regionless Xbox game you have to submit the disk and have it passed is ALL Xbox territories (basically Europe, America and Japan), this was beyond our reach I'm afraid.

No, no, this would totally be under the table, hush hush. Microsoft never needs to know. ;)

I have had the Xbox for about a year now and have really enjoyed it as much as time would allow. This past weekend I went out and purchased a couple of MC2 Racing Wheels and a couple of new games. I have a gaming room setup with a dedicated entertainment center with a flat screen TV and some rather comfortable seating arrangements. My friends will come over on the weekends and won't leave the "game zone" until they are forced to go back to work. All that I really need to complete the setup is a surround sound system and Xbox Live, which probably won't be too much longer for both.
Games that I am currently playing on the Xbox include:
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Dungeons & Dragons Heroes
The Lord of the Rings
Medal of Honor Frontline
Oddworld Munch’s Oddysee
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2
Nascar Thunder 2004
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003
Madden 2003
NHL 2002
Most of these have been loaded at least once a week recently while some seem to be a daily event. Regardless of which one is getting attention at any given moment it is safe to say that my PC gaming activities have really decreased over the past couple of months.

You really need to pick up ESPN NFL Football and ESPN NHL Hockey, if for no other reason than so I can have somebody to play against on Xbox Live. :D

I've been playing less and less of my ps2 lately. I just can't get into a console sports game like I can a PC text sim.
Maybe picking up SSX 3 will get the ps2 going again, but I'm about done with console sports games. Of course Jim's new incarnation of FOF might have something to do with it. :)

ESPN NHL and Xbox Live are definitely on my list but probably won't be purchased until late December or early January.
SkyDog, I was never a joystick jockey either but for some reason over the past year it just sort of happened. I purchased the Xbox to appease my friends and it has worked its way into my life with a vengeance. After considering what it was that was drawing me in so deep the only explanation, considering my love for PC gaming and Text Sims as well, would have to be that it is pure brain candy. There is no installing or updating or adding this or missing that but instead it is simply put the disk in and a minute later you are engrossed for hours without worry about much of anything. So far I haven't been disappointed in the least but rather impressed and pleasantly surprised with how well it has been going.

Actually, to get decent stats in most console sports games, you have to adjust sliders, game time, players, etc.... It's a pain in the arse, although against a friend is fun.
Everytime I get into a sports console game, I lose interest after a few games - just played my Rams dynasty against Atlanta and Warrick Dunn had 290 yards rushing - I don't mind the yardage against me - it's just he broke tackle after tackle.
Give me a sports sim on the pc anytime.
In fact, my ps2 sees more DVD movies than anything. :)

Very true MizzouRah. I have experienced the whole slider issues with all of the sports titles so far but it really hasn't bothered me all that much. I guess my earlier statement was more in reference to the games like KOTOR, Buffy, Medal of Honor and the like.
There does seem to be a fair amount of PC titles that don’t require much work but overall there has been some that have been truly nightmares. Although most of what contributes to the "work" involved in PC gaming can also be considered the benefits of it as well in reference to MODs and Patches.
I am still a PC gamer at heart and probably will always be. My main point was that console gaming really hasn’t been a negative factor in my overall gaming experiences, as I had originally thought it might be.

Oh, by no means has it been a negative factor for me, either.
Games like ICO, SSX Tricky, GT 3, GTA, and NCAA 2004 have been great, imo. I just need to get over the fact that controlling players tend skew the stats more so than I had thought.
It's too bad the PC has been abandoned by most game developers - I would bet in the future gaming machines will have HD's that a game is fully loaded on, thus allowing for a patch download to be applied without a users intervention. That's the one big drawback and probably why games cost $50, paying for hours and hours of testing, while you don't have to do that with PC games, ala $29 for the same game.
