Interview with NBA Live 13 Developer Scott O'Gallagher

When Andrew Bynum made his debut as the Lord and Savior, the future of EA Sports basketball was in immediate danger. The backlash of the YouTube video and NBA Elite 11 demo led to the series being shut down for two years.

When Scott O’Gallagher tore his hamstring last June, his wife asked him what he wanted to do if he couldn’t play professional basketball anymore. He responded with what he considers, a joke.

“I told her I wanted to make video games,” O’Gallagher said.

Within months EA Sports turned that joke into something more. O’Gallagher became NBA Live 13’s newest gameplay designer.

O’Gallagher has more than just his gaming experience at his disposal. The 6-foot-1 developer used to play point guard. Between having interest from the Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz, O’Gallagher took his talents everywhere from Portland State University, Bulgaria, New Zealand, Australia to Macedonia. But his injury led him to focus on his other hobbies: gaming.

Hitting the sticks has always been one of O’Gallagher’s pastimes. He created his own website, OGSports, where he focused on NBA games. He earned the respect of simulation gamers and made his stamp on Sim Nation.

His involvement in the community earned him one of seven spots on EA’s NBA Live 13 Advisory Council. Back in April he flew down to Orlando where he hit it off the development team.

“I really liked the direction EA was going with the game,” said O’Gallagher. “I loved their ideas and concepts.”

O’Gallagher is confident that his experience playing the sport will help him take NBA Live to new heights.

“I think it’s huge that I’ve played in every system overseas,” he said. “You know every nuance, how the players sync, how they play. The game in Europe as a whole – they’re more fundamentally sound over there.”

After an unimpressive showing of a way too early build of NBA Live 13 at E3, EA received backlash from all corners of the Internet. The community wasn’t necessarily outraged, but you could sense that 2K Sports' NBA 2K series was slowly pulling away from the competition.

By deciding to bring in someone directly from the community, EA is hoping to show that they mean business when it comes to putting out the No. 1 NBA simulation game on store shelves. O’Gallagher is first and foremost a gamer, so he knows what the community is looking to see.

“I know exactly what the community wants,” he said. “I am the voice of the community and will never for get where I came from. I know how important it for them to feel involved. That’s what it’s all about.”

O’Gallagher, known as OGSports on Operation Sports, is already putting in more than 40 hours a week creating Live 13. His connection to the sports gaming community is no joke: he is well-known by Operation Sports, EA’s Game Changers, Dynasty League Gaming and even everyone’s favorite Sim Nation Leader, Da_Czar. And, he is just as nit picky as the worst of us.

"Scott ... is a die hard sim gamer," Da_Czar said. "He brings with him the shared passion and enthusiasm that any of us would have given the same opportunity. That energy and passion can only mean good things for the Sim Nation as well as for EA and Live."

So with the well-deserved backing from the community, and the experience he has garnered playing overseas, O'Gallagher is poised to make big changes for NBA Live 13.

EA Sports just might have found their new savior.

I didnt say it was too much to ask.. I said they havent shown they are capable, and all of the things on your list if impossible if it needs to be done this year maybe even next

Again... AWFUL track record. Nothing you can defend about the game AT ALL
Amen! EA is so tight lip about Live 13 because they're hoping when the tree falls (Live being delayed/cancelled), no one will hear it.

1. EA does NOT have Live available for preorder on their very own online store: Origin

2. EA Sports does not have Live listed under their online season pass program while the 2013 version of Madden, NCAA, FIFA, NHL and Tiger are ALL listed.

3. EA has not shown any gameplay videos

4. No cover athlete announcement. Nothing except rookie ratings has been announced since E3.

5. Gamestop and Amazon does not have a concrete date set for the game. Amazon just changed the release date of Live from 10/2 to 12/31 over this past weekend.

Could this all be a coincidence? Maybe. The game is 2.5 months away yet we know so little. Doubt is starting to creep in. I guess we will see in the coming days what Live has (not) in store.

I dont know about the whole not coming out thing, there has been no confirmation of that, and the game goes gold in September so you should hear something at least by late august, after football

You speak yourself, there's people that care what the developers say. I can see you really dislike either EA or the NBA Live franchise for whatever reason, but that's on you, this is the NBA Live forum, is it wrong for me to have hope in a new game, with a new team, and an old name?

I'm not saying passing wasn't on 2k's list but it didn't seem to be a point of emphasis for 2k until Live mentioned passing was something they really worked on and wanted to get right.

"But it's also clear 2K Sports has taken to heart all of this business about passing, an area NBA Live 13's makers think they can exploit."

"The point is, we have worked our butts off on passing," Jones said. This is not going to go without a fight."

I'm sure 2k worked on the passing, but its like they just had to emphasize it because EA did.

I didn't say Live 13 "has" a physics engine, all i said was they've had the time to improve upon the physics engine they were using for Elite if anything. The fact that Madden is developed in the same building and has real time physics in their game leads me to the assumption that NBA Live could borrow tech.

Live hasn't had a reset this entire gen either (until now), when i look at the other games EA has reset, it gives me reason to believe NBA Live has a chance.

Elite may have an awful track record, but this isn't NBA Elite 13, its NBA Live 13. From the looks around here it seems alot of people actually like NBA Live 10, the last "NBA Live" game.

It's easy for ppl to talk ish when the others stay silent. And usually the loud mouth ends up eating his words.

Like A.I. WERE TALKING BOUT GAMES, not real life. GAMES.

OG isn't the savior. But if they actually listen to the man I believe this game will be amazing considering the limitations animation warrants. Y'all gotta chill. Go to AIU or AIA and become a developer. Then apply or create your own company and make games. We have to stop attaching emotions to fantasy. The game is either gonna be good or not. I hope it's great. Cuz I play the games but NCAA has been a let down, Madden prolly won't live up the the hype, and so on goes the NBA live story.

BUT

2K isn't the greatest game either. It's ugly and clunky. Controls aren't seemless either. In my opinion best thing about 2K is the depth and fact that it exists. That guys actually put out a decent product.

I just wonder what EA, 2k, and all the other devs think when they eavesdrop on these boards. Lol. Ppl gotta stop.

I speak for more than what you want to believe. There is a reson the game got cancelled. Its time to put up or shut up. You dont know if I dislike EA or not... Im not some game company fanboy who comes on here holding up a lolly pop waiting on them to put sugar on the top

I am first and foremost a basketball fan period, you were the one coming here talking about what 2k stole, when they're the ones putting the whipping on EA

..and Im saying who cares, if it belongs in the game it should be addressed. Don't start complaining when 2k addresses issues... thats what people want.

EA has too much more to worry about than what 2k is exploiting. They have their own issues to conquer first of all.

Wont matter if their animations still suck and the game still represents a generic basketball game...NONE of that will matter

NBA Live has had a reset every 3 years. Don't you pay attention? This series has been as unstable as an earthquake fault.

Oh I didnt say Elite, I said the NBA Live series this gen.... I Like Live 10 too, but that has absolutely nothing to do with my point besides the fact that it took a 2k dev to even make that game possible

I think live has a great base to start from and 2k needs to improve in these areas.
Who is the 2k crowd? Please dont start this junk again... and any backlash EA has been getting they deserved it because of how they completely wrecked a franchise and got it cancelled

"We" again you sound like some kind of videogame cult memeber... Its not even that serious, please stop it

...and how many years ago was that?

@23

1. That's right, I don't know if you like Live or not. Its just the way you bash EA and the Live franchise doesn't give me any reason to believe you do like it. Just an assumption. I'm also a basketball fan first, and i want a solid basketball experience. I forgive easily, I'm not gonna hold a grudge on EA because of their track record. If the game wasn't good I didn't buy it, if it was I bought it.

2. I care, because i feel that could be one of the reasons EA is withholding some info (my opinion).

3. True, but i'm not the one who wrote that, its quoted from the article. Passing can definitely be improved in Live; that is conquering one of their own issues in my opinion.

4. I never got wound up about it, i was just saying this could be why EA is slow to release info; cause when they do the competitor is quick to counter. So they'll wait until there's no time for the competitor to change facets of their game.

5. If the animations are bad then that's another story, but a physics engine will have an impact on the game if implemented correctly. Not saying they have one, but they do have the tech available to them.

6. They might have had new Producers come in now and again, but never a 3 year break/reset, which is why i'm optimistic. I know they only got the team together in November and are running on a one year development cycle, but I feel they've got their focus right.

7. So you liked NBA Live 10, but according to you Live franchise this gen has an awful track record? Couldn't be that awful if you liked the last game.

I can get a game of live 10 any weeknight or weekend online. How is it playing against the cpu?
I dont know what your point is to be honest

I already know what Live 10 does...but it sold terribly and was given over to a hockey guy... that says it all right there

What did i read incorrectly? That's great that you made that mix, but ok i'm done. I'm not gonna argue, I'm optimistic about the game and that won't change unless the gameplay gives me a reason to lose that optimism.

Good for you

As for the point about what I just posted it went way over your head again so I'm glad that youre done because I wont be trying to explain it to you anymore

I have my own thoughts and opinions and Im going to post them because its obvious you people will post what you want to believe is true regardless of how I feel

I find it incredible that people are still defending things, tricks and tactics, buzzwords and no show marketing tactics after it failed the fans time and again

# 55 24 @ 07/17/12 06:05 PM
I want to say that I have faith In EA, that they will put together this amazing basketball game that will blow my mind. However after so many years of failing to deliver I have to be skeptical when it comes to Live 13. Especially after what happened with Elite. I used to Love the NBA live series bu the faith I once had in the franchise is no longer here. My personal opinion feel free to disagree with it if you like

# 56 NoTiCe_O @ 07/17/12 06:11 PM
I'm also gonna state my opinions, some people will agree and some will disagree. If someone doesn't like my opinion that's their business. I'm not here to offend anyone, just talk about games; in particular NBA Live.

I still feel that Live is quiet so 2k won't steal/counter their ideas as 2k's past actions have shown. That's my opinion based on what I've seen so far.

With passing ALREADY mentioned as something they were working on and this tweet:

******** src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets****" charset="utf-8">

Seriously, there is nothing 2k HAS to steal from Live at this point. If anything Live needs to be studying 2k to figure out what they can steal. IJS...

If anything I think their trying to steal any spotlight or hope that Live can obtain. By doing the two above actions you just mentioned.

Mike Wang's twitter is very inactive, but when there speculation of Live having a physics engine came about, "all of a sudden" he tweets about a breakthrough in their physics engine.

And Kotaku wrote an article about Lives passing, then 4 days later Kotaku posts another article talking about 2k and Rob Jones mentioning how they've done so much to passing and he's gonna fight back. If your he's confident in the game just say the fans have nothing to worry about and kill it. But its like their had to be emphasis and a comeback.

I feel that if Live announced tomorrow that they've really went all out for the playbooks this year and overhauled them, 2k would come in and mention how playbooks have really been big for them this year, and they've done a great job.

The canned animation system is terrible imo, and player movement is almost as bad. Presentation and game mode execution (my player specifically) is too notch however. This is probably the most assinine thing ive ever read on these forums to date. Sounds like something 22ced or gatorbait would type. Not to knock them in any manner, its just the similar to the way they type.

Youre saying all live 13 needs is good online and fundamentals for it to be a win, while 2k has to go back to the drawing board for next gen? Did I just read that?
Elites on court execution was on par with NBA Unrivaled.

Live 13 is recycled bits from past Live's with a few mods and anything new they might add, whats there to steal? I can understand being optimistic, but so far this game is so unproven, and what has been said thus far hasnt been flattering.

what happens if Live 13 doesnt sell well, will they scrap and start over yet again?

I wonder if we'll see a all-star weekend event or just the all-star game in NBA Live 13. Has anyone heard of anything or all-star weekend?
