2010 Operation Sports Game of the Year Award Winners

The Operation Sports Game of the Year Awards are handed out based on a wide range of categories that highlight different areas of achievement within the sports genre. The 2010 Edition of the Stevies are no different, with 13 separate categories set to receive winners.

We awarded winners in categories ranging from the most realistic gameplay of 2010 to the best text-sim to the best team-based sports game. One major change we made this year was to eliminate the Sports Game of the Year feature because we felt it was quite redundant to give out basically the same award to a game twice.

So without further adieu, here are the winners!

Not to give away the rest of the results, but be ready to hear about NBA 2K11 a lot.

Best Presentation of 2010: NBA 2K11
Readers' Choice: NBA 2K11

The readers and staff overwhelmingly agreed that the Jordan-branded NBA 2K11 had the best presentation of 2010. Of course, the game's stellar presentation also included excellent commentary, crowds, graphical overlays and one the best broadcast-style presentations we have seen yet in a sports game.

The Show was one of the most realistic baseball games of all time.

Most Realistic Gameplay of 2010: MLB 10: The Show
Readers' Choice: NBA 2K11

The staff's clear-cut pick was MLB '10: The Show while readers had a tough time choosing between NBA 2K11 and The Show. The close reader vote makes sense because who didn't try to work the pitch count to try to get rid of a dominant starter, and then later run the pick and roll with Stockton and Malone like it was the 1990s all over again? Both titles had some of the best gameplay to ever grace our consoles, so this is a win-win situation.

Creating your own dynasty stories and accessing your dynasty from multiple places is simply awesome.

Most Innovative Feature of 2010: NCAA Football 11's Dynasty Wire and Dynasty Anywhere
Readers' Choice: NCAA Football 11's Dynasty Wire and Dynasty Anywhere

Being able to access your dynasty from anywhere, do recruiting online and create stories to make light of your embarrassing upset of your friend's powerhouse program was something that sports gamers all over the land loved. NCAA Football 11's Online Dynasty mode is a favorite among OSers, and a big reason why is probably the Dynasty Wire and Dynasty Anywhere features that allowed for a more open and customizable experience with friends.

NCAA Football 11 was a lot like the NC Game this year, low expectations but very entertaining results.

Online Experience of 2010: NCAA Football 11's Online Dynasty
Readers' Choice: NCAA Football 11's Online Dynasty

Because really, was there any question that after OSers lauded Dynasty Wire and Dynasty Anywhere that Online Dynasty mode would not rule the voting in this category among staff and readers? Online Dynasty is still the only mode in our genre that seems to get the dynamic of the offline mode right online as well. Given the huge amount of online dynasties running across the internet, it appears the mode is one with serious lasting power -- assuming the series as a whole continues to improve.

Becoming an NBA Superstar is something that just sounds like fun.

Best Player/Career Mode of 2010: My Player (NBA 2K11)
Readers' Choice: My Player (NBA 2K11)

The ability to take your own player and make him into an NBA superstar is one of the coolest concepts for a player mode in our genre. While career modes typically do not work all that well in other sports (sans baseball), the individualism and one-on-one focus that is oftentimes present in the NBA makes My Player work. 2K executed the concept well, and it was the best of the year in this category.

Somehow, someway, you can make even the Pacers great in Association Mode.

Best Offline Dynasty Mode of 2010: NBA 2K11's Association Mode
Readers' Choice: NBA 2K11's Association Mode

The voting was a landslide for both the staff and readers when it came to naming Association mode as the best offline dynasty mode of 2010. Association mode was the right mix of depth and ease of use, and it contained just enough flash to keep gamers coming back for more. It also did not hurt that the core game was so good that gamers were given a huge reason to come back and play the games.

When it came to workout cames in 2010, EA Sports Active 2 offered the best overall package.

Best Fitness Game of 2010: EA Sports Active 2
Readers' Choice: Your Shape: Fitness Evolved

The OS Staff is far from a bunch of fat, out of shape, unmotivated people -- sans a couple of notable exceptions that we dare not name publicly. However, when it came to fitness games, we found that EA Sports Active 2 was the best of the bunch, and it was not even close in our voting. Readers enjoyed Ubisoft's Kinect title Your Shape: Fitness Evolved, but it was only by one vote over EA Sports Active 2.

The Show PSP was a scaled down but largely the same as the PS3 version. Win.

Wireless/Hanheld Game of the Year: MLB 10: The Show (PSP)
Readers' Choice: MLB 10: The Show (PSP)

What happens when you take one of the most realistic games in our genre and copy it almost verbatim, minus a downgrade in graphics, to a handheld platform? What then happens when it's quite functional and, dare we say it, fun? Well, you win a nearly unanimous choice as the Wireless/Handheld game of the year.

Tiger on the Wii offers a little bit of everything.

Motion Controlled Game of the Year: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11
Readers' Choice: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Golf might be the biggest match for motion controls in terms of a "big brand" sport. Many gamers have not noticed, but one of the best titles in our genre the past couple of years has been Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Wii. Combining excellent motion controls with more than enough options for any golf fan, Tiger Woods PGA Tour on the Wii is one of the finest products in our genre.

F1 2010 was one of the best games no one played (at least in America)  in 2010.

Racing Game of the Year: F1 2010
Readers' Choice: Gran Turismo 5

F1 2010 was an often overlooked title, despite it scoring very well across multiple outlets and selling quite well in Europe (where the sport is especially huge). The game mixed good gameplay with solid track choices and intense racing that only F1 can provide. Readers disagreed quite strongly with the staff, overwhelmingly picking Sony's epic driving simulation Gran Turismo 5 as their favorite.

So deep, so engrossing, so addictive. Goodbye social life. All words you should know before playing FM 2011.

Text-Sim of the Year: Football Manager 2011
Readers' Choice: Out of the Park Baseball 11

Both Football Manager 2011 and Out of the Park Baseball 11 had strong followings in the reader and staff votes. Both games were painfully deep, incredibly realistic and amazingly addictive if you spent enough time to get to know each -- so going wrong with either wasn't an option.

EA Sports MMA was a surprise rookie hit, at least from a quality standpoint.

Individual-Based Game of the Year: EA Sports MMA
Readers' Choice: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

EA Sports MMA was the new kid on the block, and many people had a hard time seeing it as a serious contender to the big kid on the block, UFC Undisputed. But not only did the EA developers create a stellar title, they also mixed in enough features to make the game somewhat revolutionary and fun. The gameplay was also more than sufficiently different from UFC Undisputed, so you couldn't say you were playing a recycled package. Simply put, EA truly did the sport of MMA better -- this year at least. Readers disagreed with the staff and picked Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 as their favorite.

Unquestionably the king of team based sports this past year.

Team-Based Game of the Year: NBA 2K11
Readers' Choice: NBA 2K11

In what might be the closest thing you will ever get to a unanimous consensus at OS, both the readers and the staff overwhelmingly agreed that the best team-based sports game was NBA 2K11. With a stellar presentation, outstanding gameplay, great modes, oh, and Michael Jordan, NBA 2K11 was a masterpiece in our genre that is as rare as it is cherished.

Congrats to 2K11, a sweep in all almost all available categories is something not often seen.

I have to agree. I am not a baseball person, but I buy the show every year. 2K11 speaks for itself. It is in the same category with NFL 2k2... e-nuff said.

# 3 BlackRome @ 01/31/11 06:26 PM
Too many bugs in the show. NBA 2k11 had so many bugs the developers gave up patching the game. LOL 2k11 myplayer and team up mode are still broken right this moment.

If 2k11 is a master piece then I guess you will tell me $hit taste like steak next.

No NHL 11 anywhere. For shame.

Totally agree- offline NBA 2k11 was the best sports game this past year.
they struck gold with 2k11 just like they struck gold with College Hoops 2k8.

GOOD JOB 2k Sports...spprts games would be boring without you. dont ever leave...LOL

Hey the F1 2010 game isn't completely not played in the US. I bought that because I thought it'd be fun, and a good hold-me-over to GT 5. Turns out I play it more that GT 5. Great game, and hopefully has some improvements into the next installment. Maybe create-a-team mode. building a racing team from the ground up with real life sponsors.

No arguments here. NBA 2K11 was the easy choice for 2010, with The Show typically running No. 2 in most categories, and it appears that's how it went in the voting as well.

# 8 bigsmallwood @ 01/31/11 08:42 PM
Congrats for NBA 2K11...wel deserved.

# 9 Fiasco West @ 01/31/11 09:03 PM
I play 2k11 every day I have a chance. I do not see my self stopping this trend. The association mode plus great gameplay is all I ask for in a sports title and I am just lucky that it is NBA 2k11 that gets it done since Bball is my favorite sport.

madden sucks lol

# 11 32 @ 02/01/11 05:02 AM
Anyone and everyone saw that coming. 2k11 in every way shape or form was the best sports game period. I'd also put it in the running for best video game of the year. Just my thought.

# 12 Armor & Sword @ 02/01/11 05:55 AM
NBA 2K11.

Best Sports game ever.

# 13 gigadkc @ 02/01/11 06:13 AM
agree with most but one: after all these patches F1 2010 is still so buggy. Graphics are great but the rest of the game is average at best. Realism just isn't anywhere close to the real F1.

# 14 jeebs9 @ 02/01/11 08:30 AM
I'm going to miss 2k11 when its all said and done.

# 15 Dazraz @ 02/01/11 09:22 AM
The success of NBA 2K11 in these polls underlines the fact that when a developer goes out to create something really special without cutting corners their efforts do not go unnoticed.

This is exactly why Fight Night needs to work harder on it's Legacy Mode. Boxing is all about individualism. It's perfect for this genre.

Congrats to NBA2K11. It sounds like it deserves all the praise it's gotten.

NBA 2K11 is hands down the best sports game ever made. The big question is how do they top it next year. The only way is to improve on online play. Once 2K does that game over for everybody else.

By fixing the few known issues. Add Tech fouls, fix a few minor things here and there, give some sliders in My Player, update rosters, fresh coat of paint....If it ain't broke philosophy.

Let's pray that 2K don't see all these awards, and think that the games perfect, there's still a lot of problems.

GT might be a great driving sim but it's far away from a great racing sim.

IMO of course
