OS Awards: Basketball Game of the Year

Although 2008 will be remembered as the year that daily roster updates and five-on-five online play were brought to digital hardwood fans, NBA 2K9's quality gameplay should not be forgotten. While many gamers have attested how much better the NBA Live series has gotten, it is still very clear that Live has a ways to go before it can get near the top of the mountain -- at least that is what the majority thinks at OS.

Our staff voted for NBA 2K9 as the basketball game of the year, and for good reason. While NBA Live did do some things well, NBA 2K9 did just about everything better. For that reason, NBA 2K9 continues 2K Sports' reign atop the basketball gaming category in 2008.

Operation Sports Basketball Game of the Year: NBA 2K9

Staff Thoughts

Matt Blumenthal: 2K Sports has captured the Basketball Game of the Year Award at the last few Stevies, and the game has received another one this year with NBA 2K9. While the series has continued to pump out quality basketball titles, the NBA 2K series has only marginally improved during the last few years.

EA Sports has made dramatic improvements in both the NBA Live and newly renamed NCAA Basketball series. These series now play reasonably realistic games of basketball and offer gameplay experiences that are both fresh and enjoyable. Although NBA Live 09 lacks the extra gameplay polish of its college counterpart, NBA Live 365 and Dynamic DNA more than make up for this disparity. These innovative features and gameplay improvements led me to choose NBA Live 09 this year.

Steven Bartlett: NBA 2K9 is the result of a masterfully designed, fine-tuned engine that gets better with age. Starting from the days of NBA 2K on Dreamcast, 2K Sports has molded its basketball simulation into an award-winning series. Like any game, it has its flaws, but the attention to detail has resulted in it taking the basketball crown.

Richard Chavez: If you want a basketball game this year, NBA 2K9 is the only choice. If you compared this game to someone at the YMCA, it would be the tall guy in the headband warming up. He looks and acts like a basketball player, but when he gets on the court, he plays like one too. It does not have all the flash of NBA Live 09, but it plays a better brand of basketball. NBA 2K9 is an all-around fun game and can appeal to casual fans and basketball junkies. While there has not been much competition in recent years, NBA Live was solid in 2008. NBA 2K9 by itself is an amazing experience, but 2K will need to step it up if it wants to repeat in 2009.

Jayson Young: Live got my vote this year for one simple reason: It was more fun to play.

NBA 2K9 had a ridiculous amount of technical issues that did not get resolved until two months after release -- and even after the patch, it still suffers from some major clipping and skating issues that really take you out of the game and make defense nearly impossible to play against a human opponent who knows how to exploit the flaws in the game's defensive animations.

Live has its own share of issues on defense -- players getting stuck in a defensive stance, baseball passes that can travel a majority of the court, alley-oops that are far too easy to complete -- but at the end of the day, I tend to walk away from a game of Live less frustrated than I am after a game of 2K9.

I just do not think it was a great year for basketball fans overall, as both games are kind of in the C+/B- range in terms of gameplay.

Christian McLeod: Live 09 got my vote this year because of Live 365 and the huge strides the game made in the gameplay department.

As a veteran of the 2K series for the past nine years, I just cannot shake the feeling that the past couple iterations of the franchise have amounted to "been there, done that." 2K has gotten stale over the years and desperately needs some innovation. It honestly did not help that the online component of 2K9 was essentially shipped in a broken state, and online Team Up is still not running smoothly three months after release.

Live 09 was fun to play, had great graphics, and featured a relatively fun online Team Play mode that extended its replayability. Sure, the game had some issues, but EA made some huge strides over last year's game. The result is an extremely accessible and fun NBA experience. Live 09 was just what I needed to get excited about NBA gaming again.

It is not that 2K9 was a bad game, it is just that EA and Live really surprised me with this year's title. The Live franchise is officially relevant again, and I expect great things out of this title when the 2010 edition comes out.

Chase Becotte: All this talk about "improvement" has me confused. Are we giving out an award based on improvement Christian? I thought we were giving an award out based on what game is the best. Also, any game can be a hassle if someone "exploits" the weaknesses Jayson. Either way, on the court, NBA 2K9 still cannot be touched. Is it a bummer that the online component is less than perfect? Yes. But NBA 2K9 still has superior graphics, better signature styles, a wonderful animation system, amazing online leagues, and is still an organic experience that Live cannot touch at this time.

I am not trying to say Live is not improving each year, but I still look forward to turning on the game to check out the latest DNA changes rather than actually playing the game. The half-court game in Live is phenomenal, and the developers have achieved a milestone by implementing the Synergy Tech, but that is not enough to make up for the parts that are still sub-par: The slow and inaccurate passing system, the fast break issues, the inconsistent graphics, and the fact that most teams play the same way in the game.

Readers' Choice

There were no surprises in the readers' choice category, as NBA 2K9 took home the crown with relative ease. Surprisingly enough, NCAA Basketball garnered a small pocket of support from readers as well. Either way, there was little either EA game could do to even dent NBA 2K9's lead.

Winner: NBA 2K9

Voting Results: NBA 2K9 (75.45%), NBA Live 09 (15.32%), NCAA Basketball 09 (7.43%)

Readers' Thoughts: I wanted to vote for Live this year because I was disappointed with 2K9. The patch however has brought me back. -- Altimus

I am a big 2K fan, but I think Live beat it this year. Live got my vote. -- Candyman5

I am not really blown away by any of the three basketball games this year (2K9, Live, NCAA 09) although each one has its bright spots. I guess I'll have to pick 2K9 for now, even though I haven't touched it since the second week after its release. -- ehh

If this isn't won by NBA 2K9, it must mean some serious Live fanboy influence or pure ignorance. -- TabulaRasa

Im sorry but I just switched to NBA Live a few weeks ago after playing NBA 2k for the last 5+ years, and Live is as good as NBA 2k this year. NBA 2k does not play or feel like basketball. There has never ever been a mid range game in NBA 2k and that is basketball.

The 2k Insider is the worst thing to ever happen to NBA 2k. NBA 2ks ratings are all jacked up and having one guys biased opinon on ratings is even worse.

Also I have spent 99% of my time editing rosters and sliders in NBA 2k the last 5 years, and I can play NBA Live right out of the box and never have to touch anything which feels great. Im not saying NBA Liveis better this year. Ill give it a tie, but NBA 2k is a outdated broken game which I have no doubt NBA Live will blow away next year since NBA 2k has never changed.

NBA 2k is a broken game. They carry the same game over with some updates every year or improve the player models which look great but they are still to big for the court. Team, Play, Coach sliders and tendencys have always been broken and it seems like they carry over the same for everyone every year never touching it.

Half the players are rated 80+ overall in the game and the rating system is broken. There are secret ratings the game does not let you see or touch as well.

The worst thing is there has never been a mid range game in NBA 2k. It ruins the game period and you will mess with slider forever trying to create a balanced game. NBA 2k is broken and outdated and Live is gonna pass them next year no doubt and thank god. I dont care who makes the better game I just want a better basketball game,

Whatever....... 2K.... easy.

Live and NCAA need a ton of work on their animations.

I can't believe I'm saying this but, I'm feeling Live this year. It may not actually be better than 2k but, I like the change of pace.

# 8 DaFunk4 @ 01/06/09 11:54 PM
Animations dont make the game. NBA 2K is just better eye candy then Live right now. NBA Live shocked me, and I didnt expect it to be a solid basketball game. I would say I thought Live was still garbage untill I really looked into it and bought it a few weeks ago. NBA Live feels like a brand new basketball game and brought the fun back for me.

2k9 hands down. Dont know how different the PC version is from the console versions, but my experience with 2k9 has been the best since maybe 2k5.
Fun, Frustrating and challenging at the same time.
The frustrating part is just winning on a consistent basis, which represents a challenge.
In addition the game is pleasing to the eye. The depth of gameplay seems endless.

Live is good game. IMO what makes Live a good game is the commentary, and atmosphere found in the arenas. other than that LIVE cant even touch the 2k series.

2k needs to improve its commentary and overall atmosphere. IMO thats what has been stale about this series. Commentary needs more banter, more hollow sounding arenas etc.

NBA 2K is the most overrated sports game ever. Do people not realize that passing the ball finding the open man, and shooting jump shots is the main part of basketball, and that a mid range game or even a open 3pt shooter has never excisted in NBA 2K.

2k9 for this yr, but it was a disappointment even after the patch. still better than live.

wangman has moved on and with his track record, live 2010 will be a good/great bball game.

hopefully 2k gets off their tails this yr, but i wouldnt bet against wang.

# 12 DC @ 01/07/09 09:34 AM
2K won by default. Game is still a disappointment

# 13 xjohnnyjohnsonx @ 01/07/09 10:12 AM
nba 2k9s graphics are better hands down but lives game play and 365 update is something i really enjoy so i like them both. they both have their ups and downs IMO ..now if live had the same game play with 2k9's graphics no game could touch it but live this year has made me enjoy live again

# 14 frankman29 @ 01/07/09 10:55 AM
NBA 2k9 is hands down better I dont understand why people wont admit it. Live is for people who dont understand how to play basketball games. There's no real skill involved. You can take over a game with KWAME BROWN. Come on now. NBA 2K9 tests you on your basketball IQ. You have to understand basketball to play 2k games. NBA 2K9 is clearly dominating EA sports. EA should stick to making Football games and 2K should stick to making Basketball games. Enough Said.

still the best choice, by a wide margin!

I think Chase has summed it up nicely.

This seems to be the first year where a game that has been pretty much terrible has improved so immensely that many are calling it the "best" game because of its improvements.

In no way, shape or form is that the case. Every year, within a genre, all offerings should be compared on a level playing field. Forget about which game engine has been around the longest, who has made the biggest improvement...

You can discuss all that in the forums. But if you're going to compared A to B, you do it and see which one offers you more.

I'm interested in seeing what Live '10 can bring to the table. Take away DNA and there's much, much more that needs work in Live. The developer's focus is immensely better now than it has been in the past, and their recent restructuring should lend them to develop a game that basketball gamers will enjoy.

Nba 2K9 based on skill. I'm sorry but the spin move is just out of control.

I've seen more spin moves in one possession than I ever see in an entire basketball game. Have they fixed that yet.

If that doesn't work then run to the baseline for a layup.

By removing the rankings they basically obliterated the Hall Of Fame level where I have played my most realistic games. I played over 600 games online in 2k8.

There is no reason to play on that level because the games are not ranked.

As a long time vet of the 2K series (going back to the Dreamcast), I could not stand this years version. Pro was way to easy & all star, superstar & HOF are a game play joke. Shooting percentages for both teams were always 55% - 65%, the CPU could never be shut down & always scored off of junk baskets (back cuts, & offensive rebounds). Way to easy for me to score, & way to hard to shut down the CPU. Don’t get me started on the momentum wings either. I know people on here have had great experiences adjusting sliders & rosters, etc. I just can’t get into doing that, way to much effort in fixing something.

Traded it in for Fallout.. & I still am playing Fifa 09. May give NHL 09 a try, heard it’s great.

Just to be clear, I voted for Live on the basis that it's improvements made it a better game than 2K, not solely on the basis that it improved more than 2K did.
