YOUNG GUNS
The NBA's Best Under 25
By Joe Smith
NBA.com
We're about to ring in a new year, and that means all kinds of lists. Best of this. Worst of that. Well, I can't resist! I've got my own list for all you NBA nuts out there, and it's faaaantastic! There's been quite an infusion of talent into the NBA over the last few years. So, I'm taking a look at how they stack up against each other. Today, we're considering the Top 5 Players Under 25. These players aren't just stars of the future. The future is NOW for these guys. First, a look at those who are worth a mention, but didn't quite make the top five.
HONORABLE MENTION:
And now, the moment you've all been waiting for - a countdown of the top 5 players under 25 years old.
5. STEPHEN CURRY - 24 YEARS OLD - POINT GUARD - GOLDEN STATE

A lot of people thought Curry was way too undersized to be able to perform at a level similar to what he did at Davidson. But, he's proved a lot of people wrong. Curry continues to get better every year with Golden State. He had a solid rookie season with 17.5 points per game, 5.9 assists per game and 1.9 steals per game. Those numbers have gone up every season, to the point where he is now averaging 22 points, 8.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. He is in the top 10 so far in 2012 in assists and thefts. And, there isn't a more pure shooter among his age bracket.
4. JOHN WALL - 22 YEARS OLD - POINT GUARD - WASHINGTON
John Wall was EXPECTED to be a star when he left Kentucky to enter the NBA Draft early. And, he certainly hasn't disappointed. Wall is a dynamic, explosive talent who continues to get better every season. He is averaging 19.2 points and 7.5 assists per game for his career. But, the numbers have gone up in each of his 2+ seasons in the NBA. He is now averaging 23.5 points and 8.7 assists per game, both in the top five in the league.

He's a force on defense in terms of stealing the ball. And, he is becoming a big time leader for such a young age. The one criticism with Wall is the turnovers. Those numbers have gone up every year as well, so taking care of the ball is one area he'll need to focus on. If he can get some real talent around him in Washington, watch out!
3. BRIAN HAPPEL - 21 YEARS OLD - SMALL FORWARD - ORLANDO
Brian Happel may be the biggest surprise on this list. He had a good college career at Syracuse University and managed to get drafted late in the first round by Orlando. But, not even the Magic knew just what they were getting. Happel started off without much fanfare. But now, he is clearly one of the best, if not THE best players in the game today. It's been quite the meteoric rise - kind of like his dunks nowadays. NBA Champion? Check. NBA Finals MVP? Check. Regular season MVP? Check. All at the ripe old age of 20 - and in just his second year in the league! He led the league in scoring and rebounding last year, and he's in position to do the same this year. So far over his career: 27.7 points, 12.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists per game. He is the best shooter in the game - 61% FG, 46% 3-pointers, 92% FT. He can beat you off the dribble. Happel moves without the ball like nobody else. He's relentless on the glass. He makes his teammates better. The only reason why he's not number one on this list - it's only his third year in the league. The next 2 guys have a bigger body of work.
2. DERRICK ROSE - 24 YEARS OLD - POINT GUARD - CHICAGO
Derrick Rose may be the most athletic of this bunch. Again, many people ASSUMED Rose would become a good player. But, he is quickly becoming the BEST in the league. Rose can take over a game at any time. But, while he can put the ball in the hoop with the best of them, he also finds a way to get his teammates involved. In his 5th year in the league, Rose is averaging 24 points and nearly 7 assists per game.

Rose is an outstanding shooter that can nail the jumper from anywhere on the court, but he can also break down the defense and get to the basket for easy layups and dunks. His foul shooting is also significantly improved. Rose's coming out party came a few years ago in the playoffs against Boston. Since then, Derrick has been associated with dominance. The only question is, can he lead the Bulls to a title and cement himself in both franchise and league history?
1. KEVIN DURANT - 24 YEARS OLD - SMALL FORWARD - OKLAHOMA CITY
This was really a no-brainer. Happel may beg to differ, but considering the longer body of work, Kevin Durant is both the better player and better pure scorer. Durantula is a nightmare to guard. He can stick jumpers in your face. He can get to the basket with ease. He can pretty much do what he wants on the floor when it comes to putting the ball in the basket. Durant led the league in scoring twice (2009-10 and 2010-11) and is consistently putting up 25+ points per game.

His rebounding is also vastly improved. Durant went from 4.3 rebounds per game in his rookie year to 11.1 rebounds per contest last season, and he's again averaging a double-double every night out. Durant's shooting has also gotten measurably better - now shooting better than 50% over the last year and a half. One of the biggest criticisms is his lack of getting teammates involved. This is one reason Happel may overtake Durant as the best player in the NBA. Durant does not do a good job finding teammates, averaging just about 2 assists a game for his career. Like Rose, the question is whether Durant can lead a team to an NBA title. He may have to leave Oklahoma City to do that.

HAPPEL, STEPHEN CURRY NAMED PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Orlando, FL (AP) - Back from his injury, and back on top. Magic forward Brian Happel was named the Eastern Conference's Player of the Week for December 23-29th. Happel had spent much of the past three weeks on the sidelines after suffering a twisted ankle against Minnesota on December 3. That gave some other guys in the East a chance at some hardware, namely John Wall, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James. But, once Happel was back on the court, it didn't take him long to get back to his old tricks and dominating performances.
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel's 1st game back against San Antonio was a strong one: 40 pts, 12 reb, 6 ast
Happel led his Magic to three blowout victories, two of them on the road. He averaged 32 points, 16.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game for the week. Happel also shot 61% from the field and blocked four shots in the three games. "I was just ready to get back on the court," Happel said after practice yesterday, "Sure, it's nice to be recognized like that. But, you know the most important stat? Orlando went 3-0 last week. I don't care if I score 80 points or no points, as long as we win and I can contribute, that's all that I care about."

Curry lit up opponents last week, leading Golden State to 3 victories
Warriors Poing Guard Stephen Curry was named the Western Conference's Player of the Week. Curry was on fire, averaging 31 points per game and 7 assists per game. The fourth year point man out of Davidson also shot lights out, connecting on 54% of his shots from the field, including 38% from long distance.

CLEVELAND, OH -- Fresh of a bye week, the 3-0 Vikings are set to take on the Connecticut Huskies. The Vikings are wearing all black in front of a blacked out crowd in Cleveland. They hope to keep riding their win streak and hopefully jump into the Top 25 after this game.
The Vikings struggled in the first half in comparison to their dominating performance in their last game. They punted 3 times in the first half, while not punting once in their last game. They still looked strong as they scored 28 points in the first half, and went to the locker room leading 28-0. Seals threw for 178 yards in the first half, with 106 of those going to Monroe.
Once again, the Vikings milked the clock, resulting in a - lead after 3, and a 63-6 win. Seals went 18-27 for 295 yards and 2 TDs. Clifford the Big Green Dog won Player of the Week for the second straight game, with 247 yards on 33 carries and 5 TD's. Monroe added 116 receiving yards, but no TD's. Lowe caught the only two receiving TD's.

OXFORD, MS -- Cleveland State comes into this game riding the NCAA leading rusher, Clifford. This week they face off against conference foe Ole Miss.
CSU's kick returner, Spence, returned the opening kickoff for a 98 yard score, shaking off a last second tackle. Clifford added two impressive, long scores at the end of the 1st, giving the Vikings a 21-3 lead after 1 quarter of play. Clifford's 1st run was reminiscent of Marshawn Lynch's playoff run, shaking off defenders left and right, and having the determination to get into the end zone.
Ole Miss scored a dismal 3 points and only gained 100 yards of offense in the half, leaving fans wondering why they even showed up to watch the game. The game already seemed over with CSU leading 48-3 at the half.
The second half began with the stadium half empty, yet Ole Miss's hopes were full. Matching CSU, Ole Miss returned the kickoff for a TD. By the 4th quarter, the stadium was almost completely empty, even most of the CSU fans had left. The Vikings led 62-17 after 3. The 2nd string offense came in to get some reps, and ran out the clock for the rest of the game. CSU destroyed the Rebels, with a final score of 72-17.

Clifford breaks threw several Ole Miss defenders for a 65 yard TD
Clifford, who was named National Player of the Week, racked up a monstrous 300 yards and 7 TD's, with 225 of those yards coming in the 1st half. Seals still appears to be having accuracy issues, throwing a pick, however he did throw for 306 yards, a season high.

PISTONS OFFENSE STALLS, ORLANDO WINS BIG
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: Happel with a contact layup, blocked shot and a step-back "3"
Orlando, FL (AP - Orlando is getting back into the groove of things with its starting lineup back on the court. The Magic blow out yet another opponent, thanks in part to a fantastic start in the first quarter, smacking down Detroit 92-69 in front of a packed house at the Amway Center. Orlando started off the game on fire, making 12 of its first 15 shots over the course of 8:27. But, the Pistons didn't fold right away. Detroit came out in the second quarter firing, going on a 9-0 run that cut the deficit to three points. Orlando then went on a 20-6 run of its own, capped by a Wayne Washington jumper with 2:23 left in the first half. That gave Orlando a 17 point advantage, and the Magic never looked back.

Happel pulling down one of his season-high 21 rebounds
Magic forward Brian Happel was a monster on the boards, cleaning the glass like it was nobody's business. Happel finished with a whopping 21 rebounds, including 18 on the defensive end.
"I just want to keep showing Coach that I'm capable of doing more," said Happel, "If I can do that, and keep working on making my teammates better, then we'll have a lot of good things in store for us ahead."
Happel also poured in 25 points, dished out 5 assists and had 2 blocked shots to round out another excellent performance. Dwight Howard was not a factor on offense, but he contributed on the glass as well, collecting 12 boards. Andray Blatche played well offensively, scoring 18 points on 9-13 shooting from the field. Stephen Jackson remains in a deep slump. He only hit on 6 of 21 shots, and missed all 6 of his attemps from long range.
Detroit struggled all game long shooting. The Pistons shot just 31% in the first half - and finished shooting about the same percentage for the game. Rodney Stuckey and Paul George were among the worst offenders. George was just 5-15 from the field, missing on all 5 of his three-point attempts. Stuckey was even worse, going 3-22 from the field. There were two bright spots: both Michael Beasley and Greg Monroe put up double-doubles and shot a combined 9 of 17 from the floor.

Happel wasted no time jump-starting Orlando's offense with this nice alley-oop on the first play of the game
Detroit fans won't have long to wait for their chance at revenge. The Pistons welcome Orlando to The Palace at Auburn Hills tomorrow night. The Magic are hoping to end 2012 on a winning note. And, they'll likely be on a plane when the clock strikes midnight and we enter into a new year. Orlando has a matchup back at the Amway Center on New Year's Day, against Memphis.

CLEVELAND, OH -- The Vikings had their first true test of the season. They hosted the 23rd ranked LSU Tigers. The Tigers are a notoriously good SEC power, so this was a game to show what the Vikings can do in the SEC.
The Tigers scored first, but the Vikings came out with the no huddle offense on their first drive, resulting in a 6 yard TD pass to Carpenter. The play was reviewed, but the TD was upheld. CSU scored 24 unanswered points and led 24-10 at the half. A poorly thrown ball was picked off, and the Tigers scored their first points of the game since the opening drive. CSU milked the clock in the second half, resulting in three field goals and a TD. Once again, the opposing team came close at the end of the game, but CSU put them away with a late TD. This may be cause for concern about the team's ability to finish games.

Clifford walks into the endzone after a 7 yard rush
The Vikings improved to 2-0 (1-0) thanks in large part to Cliffored. Clifford earned the player of the game honor after rushing for 177 yards and 3 TD's on 33 carries. Seals threw for 222 yards and 1 TD, with 2 interceptions. Jefferson of LSU threw for 279 yards and 3 TD's, while also throwing 2 picks. Ridley racked up 100 yards on 23 carries.

CLEVELAND, OH -- Fans are ecstatic as their hometown university got invited to the SEC. The SEC may seem a little out of reach for a team from Ohio, but both the SEC and Cleveland State University are happy about the move. CSU looks to establish themselves in this new conference with a strong 2010 showing.
The Vikings opened up their new season with a 40-28 victory against the Arizona State Sun Devils. Cleveland State struck first and never looked back. The game did get close in the closing minutes with backups in, but CSU thwarted the comeback attempt with a late TD. Seals, CSU's QB, had a poor showing, going 16-32 with 188 yards and a TD. Their powerful offense more than made up for the passing game, with Clifford gaining 263 yards and 3 TD's on 47 carries. CSU's leading receiver, Monroe, racked up 78 yards and caught the only TD. CSU's defense came up with two turnovers: a pick and a fumble recovery, while their offense committed 0 turnovers.

FRIDAY 11/19 Boston Celtics VS Oklahoma City Thunder
CELTICS
A huge game for both teams, the Celtics come into this game 5-6. A very dissapointing beginning for a great celtic team. Although, their struggles seem to be contagious in the east. They still lead their division, and are in 4th place in the conference. Their latest power ranking is 21.
Ray Allen leads this team in scoring with 17.4 points per game. Rajon Rondo leads the team with 10.3 assists per game. Kevin Garnett leads the team with 10 rebounds per game.
THUNDER
The Thunder also have not gotten off to as good as a start as they hoped for only being a game over 500. They are 6-5 and ranked second in the northwest division. They are tied for 7th in the conference. They are coming off a 77-113 loss to the Houston Rockets. Hopefully looking to find their offense and defense in the upcoming Boston game.
Kevin Durant leads this team in scoring with 28.8 points per game. R. Westbrook leads the team in assists with 5.7 per game. Kevin durant suprisingly leading the Thunder in rebounds with 9.1 per game.
PREDICTIONS
The Celtics need this game and will come out with great intensity on the defensive end. Look for Paul Pierce to accept the scoring faceoff against Kevin Durant. Celtics should win this one.
