Villanova Takes Advantage of Cal's Poor Play
The Wildcats are moving on to the second round of the Maui Invitational but not because they played particularly well; mostly because California played a terrible game. They simply could not shoot, only making 16 of 61 shots for a miserable 26%. California's senior guard Cam Christophe had the worst game of his college career, only shooting 1 for 11 from the field, and 0 for 5 from behind the arc; his only basket coming on a fast break layup. With such terrible shooting, the bears could not recover, even though they out-rebounded Villanova 34 to 32.

Nothing worked for Cal in this blowout
Villanova didn't shoot much better, only shooting 41%. Their 3 point shooting was awful, going 6 for 23 from distance. Chris Kramer had a decent game, scoring 18 points off 6-12 shooting while adding 6 assists.
Sean Webb had another good game, getting 13 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 steals. Webb was asked how hes adjusting to the NCAA game, "It's been a pretty smooth transition, guys are definately more skilled up here, but I'm finding my groove."

Chris Kramer scoring late against Boykin
Villanova takes on the Dayton Flyers today at 4 o'clock. "We cant count on the other team playing worse than us this game," said Chris Kramer after Mondays victory, "We need to play our game today." Dayton beat Butler University in the first round and look like they could pull off the upset against Villanova. Only time will tell, so make sure to tune in.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Phoenix Suns struggled in the first quarter at home for the second straight time at home, but were able to pull off an 89-85 win over the visiting San Antonio Spurs.Despite a sloppy start with five turnovers and a poor shooting effort in the first quarter, Dirk Nowitzki and the Suns came away with their fourth consecutive win to begin the 2010/2011 NBA season. Nowitzki finished his day as the game’s scoring leader with 24 points on 12-18 shooting.
“We need to fix the way we have been starting games,” Nowitzki told reporters following the game Wednesday night. “It’s been sloppy, convoluted and has started us in a hole to start games. In this league, that type of thing will start catching up to us if we don’t address it now.”
Phoenix trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, thanks to a huge second quarter effort off the bench from San Antonio’s Jason Thompson. Thompson was 5-6 in the period with 11 points. Phoenix was able to rally to tie the game going into halftime on the back of a 10-0 run in the final 3:14 of the second quarter. That run was capped by a Mike Conley three-pointer, as he went into the locker room with 10 first half points.
“I think the key for us this evening was when Dirk (Nowitzki) came out on fire in the third;” Suns head coach Alvin Gentry told media in his press conference following the win. “He showed why he is a superstar in this league, and made sure our guys played well out of the break. It’s always important to keep momentum as long as possible, because it can change at any moment. Tonight, like last Friday (against the Lakers), we were able to hold off a late run and win the ballgame.”
Nowitzki came out firing in the third quarter after scoring 10 first half points. He carried the load for Phoenix, scoring 12 points, shooting 6-7 from the field. It was a back and forth battle between superstars as Brandon Roy put up 13 points of his own, despite his poor shooting the rest of the game. Roy was just 7-25 from the field in the game, but was 5-8 in the third, bringing San Antonio within one point after three.
The Suns bench, fueled by Brandon Bass, Nick Young and Krik Hinrich played a big role in the beginning of the fourth quarter, as they combined to score the first 11 points of the period for Phoenix. Bass finished with 10 points, while Hinrich added a season-high 10 assists in his reserve role.
Unable to fully pull away, Phoenix found itself in another close game as the final minutes approached. Spurs sixth man Mike Miller’s finish in traffic tied things at 85 with 1:51 remaining after a nice pass by Raymond Felton, but San Antonio could not find a way to take the lead.
Conley hit a monster fadeaway jumper as the shot clock expired with 1:27 left to put the Suns on top for good. After a stop by each team, Felton had a chance to pull the Spurs level at 87, but his jumper was blocked by Conley, causing a shot clock violation. Kevin Durant made two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining to seal the victory for Phoenix. He finished with 19 points on 7-19 shooting from the field.
The Spurs (0-4) will host the Houston Rockets and Pau Gasol on Saturday night at 7:30 CT at the AT&T Center, while Phoenix (4-0) hosts the Memphis Grizzlies and Kobe Bryant on Friday night at 7 p.m. MT from the US Airways Center.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The fans at the U.S. Airways Arena were very excited to see the new version of their Suns, but they sputtered out of the gates. The Los Angeles Lakers jumped out to a nine point lead in the first quarter, yet the Suns were able to pull off a 111-109 win and send the fans home happy.Kevin Durant was the high point man for Phoenix for the third consecutive game, scoring 31 (14-23 shooting) points and pulling down a season-high 12 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki struggled, picking up a quick three fouls and scoring just six first half points. He finished with 22, though it took him 20 shots to do so. It was Marcus Thornton who shouldered the load, scoring 27 points on 12-19 shooting, including 3-4 from three-point land.
“Tonight was my night to step up,” said Thornton in the home locker room after the Suns 111-109. “Every single one of us have the ability to pick up slack when KD (Durant) and Dirk (Nowitzki) might be struggling a bit. Dirk was in some foul trouble, and my number was called. The important thing is the win, and I am happy to have contributed to it.”
After falling behind early, the Suns went on a 10-0 run to close the first quarter and take a 26-25 lead. Monta Ellis led the way for Los Angeles, scoring 30 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out five assists.
“We fought hard out there tonight, but it wasn’t enough,” said a somber Ellis in the Lakers locker room Friday night. “I could care less about the 30 points, I am just disappointed we couldn’t pull it off. We need to fix things to be better in late game situations.”
Durant was key in the first half for Pheonix, scoring 22 of his 31 points when Nowitzki was on the bench. Los Angeles used a 14-2 run late in the second quarter, fueled by Ellis to take a 56-51 lead into halftime.
The fourth quarter was a see-saw affair, that was tied at 103 with 2:01 remaining on a fastbreak dunk by Paul George. Trailing 107-105 with 0:58 on the clock, Thornton hit a pair of three-pointers to put the Suns on top for good, 111-107.
Aaron Brooks, who shot just 3-15 from the field and finished with 10 points and 11 assists missed a fallaway jumper with seconds remaining that would have tied the game at 111.
Los Angeles (0-2) will take on the Golden State Warriors at home on Sunday, Oct. 31, while the Suns will host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. MT.

Kramer Overpowers Mountaineers
Domination. That is the only way to describe Chris Kramer's performance against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Tuesday. They were helpless trying to defend him; double-teams, triple-teams, it just wasn't going to stop Kramer from putting the ball in the basket. He shot 14 of 20(5 of 9 from behind the arc) for 33 points in addition to 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Kramer played great defense as well, adding 3 blocks and shutting down his opponent, Kellen Brand, who shot only 2 of 9.

Kramer celebrates after hitting his 5th three pointer of the night
Kramer was not the only one getting in on the action; Sean Webb was a beast on the boards, grabbing 16 while adding 12 points. Corey Stokes and Antonio Pena were terrific on the glass as well muscling 27 rebounds between the two of them. The Wildcats out-rebounded the Mountaineers 54 to 27 on the night; UAS was simply overmatched in the rebound department. Appalachian State's Donald Sims struggled mightily from the floor, only connecting on 2 of his 17 shots.

The Wildcats dominated the glass all night
When questioned about his teams performance Jay Wright had this to say, "Yeah we played good but they are not a very good team. We still have a lot of gray areas that need fixing, and I hope we can correct them before we play a talented Cal team in the MI(Maui Invitational) next week." Wright's statement does ring true to the Wildcats as they do still have some problems, but if Chris Kramer can continue his tremendous play, the Wildcats have nothing to worry about.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Phoenix Suns used a 27-19 advantage in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Utah Jazz with a 94-81 win at EnergySolutions Arena Thursday night.
Kevin Durant led the way again for Phoenix, as he posted 31 points, topping 30 for the second consecutive game. Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t far behind with 26 points and 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
“We are very comfortable as a unit right now,” Durant said in his postgame interview. “Although I struggled from the three point line tonight (1-7) I knew that the guys would get me the ball in spots I can score and at times, the basket looks real big to me. We are happy with this win and look forward to seeing our fans in Phoenix tomorrow night.”
Mike Conley and Marcus Thornton also hit double figures again for the Suns, who used an 11-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to take control. Conley added 10 points and 10 assists, while Thornton took advantage of the space given by the Utah defense, going 6-7 from the floor for 13 points.
“When my shot isn’t there like tonight (4-14 shooting), I am just happy to find my teammates and create easy buckets for them,” stated an upbeat Conley. “Tomorrow will be a difficult test, but we are excited to take on the Lakers.”
Wesley Matthews led the way for the Jazz with 20 points on 8-12 shooting, including 2-2 from three point land. He led a quintet of Utah players in double figures on the night, including Yao Ming (16 points, 5 blocks), Ron Artest (14 points, 7 rebounds), Chauncey Billups (12 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds on 4-18 shooting), and Patrick Patterson (11 points).
The Jazz (0-2) will try to get in the win column on Sunday night in Oklahoma City against the Dwyane Wade, Zach Randolph and the Thunder. Phoenix (2-0) will look to make it three straight tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. MT against the Monta Ellis led Lakers.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Durant-Nowitzki era began with a bang for the Suns, as they jumped all over the Blazers at the Rose Garden on Tuesday night as the visitors left Portland with a blowout victory. Kevin Durant led the way for Phoenix with 33 points, and Dirk Nowitzki added 30 of his own in the 119-90 romp. Blazers point guard and first round selection Derrick Rose struggled in his Portland debut, shooting 3-15 from the field and finishing with just 10 points and six assists. In addition to the big nights by Durant and Nowitzki, Phoenix floor general Mike Conley set a career-high with 16 assists and also added 11 points. Marcus Thornton played his role of complimentary scorer well as he came up with 14 points on 6-10 shooting.
“I know my role on this team, and it is simply to take the load off of Kevin and Dirk,” Thornton said after his solid debut performance. “We jelled really well in the preseason, and that certainly carried over tonight. This team is ready to do big things, and tonight was just the beginning.”
Head coach Alvin Gentry preached tempo for his new group of Suns, going slightly against his philosophy last season, but the running game produced results that no one will argue with.
“Everyone has to make adjustments with these new rosters, so I believe Portland will rebound and come together nicely,” said Gentry in his postgame news conference. “We dictated the pace tonight, and will look to do the same each night. You will see a lot of effort from our guys every night, and I am very happy with the start this evening.”
Portland was led by Rashard Lewis, who put up 28 points of his own, shooting 5-14 from behind the arc, but it was nowhere near enough for the Blazers, who fell to 0-1. They travel to Los Angeles tomorrow night to take on Dwight Howard and the Clippers. The Suns travel to Salt Lake City to take on the Utah Jazz on Thursday night from the EnergySolutions Arena at 7:30 p.m. MT.

* The Phoenix Suns held the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA Fantasy Draft, and after the Los Angeles Clippers selected Dwight Howard first overall and LeBron James went to the Chicago Bulls, Phoenix was on the clock. Who should be the cornerstone of this franchise? A point guard like Chris Paul, Derrick Rose or Deron Williams might be a good way to go. Or it could be Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony or Kobe Bryant. Phoenix’s answer however, was to go with the small forward who took the University of Texas by storm, Kevin Durant.
After The Durantula had landed in the Valley of the Sun, the 33rd overall selection was Dirk Nowitzki, who helped form a fantastic one-two punch. The rest of the roster filled out as follows:

Villanova Dominates Season Opener
Now I know that the Sacred Heart Pioneers are not a good team, but Villanova was flat out dominate. They limited the pioneers to 36% shooting and blocked a total of 11 shots. Their defense was great and it looks like the addition of Sean Webb will be huge for the Wildcats. He scored 8 points on 4 of 7 shooting, grabbed 5 boards and sent away 2 shots as well. He did turn the ball over 4 times, but they were all in the first half, most likely because he was nervous. Chris Kramer had a well rounded season debut. He was the leading scorer with 19 points but he also had 4 rebounds and dished out 5 assists.

Sean Webb was very good in his debut with the Wildcats
The Wildcats do have some things to correct however. The bench was not good, only scoring 4 points on 2 of 12 shooting. Dominic Cheek wasn't good at all, going 0-5 from the field. They also need to improve their transition defense. Too many times last night, the pioneers would have an uncontested layup on a fast break. They shouldn't be so lazy getting back on defense when they turn it over. The three points shooting also wasn't there last night as they only shot 6-18.

Chris Kramer finishes off a spectacular drive with a jam.
Despite the few weak spots, Villanova looks to be a very strong team this season. The bench will not continue to play as bad as they did, because they are just too talented, and dont count on Dominic Cheek to continue to go 0-5 from the field. Villanova looks to improve their record to 2-0 when they take on the mountaineers of Appalachian State next Tuesday, before kicking off the Maui Invitational which starts on November 23. Be sure to tune in.

The Thunder have now won 4 in a row and their record stands at 13-12. Kevin Durant poured in the buckets against the Cavs, and the Thunder protected home court with a 100-90 victory. James Harden was huge off the bench and Kendrick Perkins added a double-double to the fray.
"Kevin's play on the defensive end really ignited the home crowd, and Kevin himself," Scott Brooks responded to the media, "He struggled in the early going but down the stretch, there is no one else I would rather have."
Let's hope this proves true, because the Thunder still have a lot of work to do.

Alex Best (King's Head Coach): "This is a hard loss for our boys. I know they wanted to finish the month better than this, but it's stepping stones. We'll be fine next month and into the rest of the season. Just need to brush this loss off and keep going."

O.J. Mayo (Player Of The Game): "That was a difficult blow-out! I mean, we had to really work for it. Typically you just play well and they don't, and you get a 15 point win. But we had to actually work hard for that win."

Tyreke Evans (King's Role Player): "I think this game proves that some teams are spending practice time doing the wrong things. I mean, they were stealing balls with their back to the passer, making shots where they couldn't even see the basket, and faking struggles to draw fouls out of us. I mean seriously, with only 5 seconds left and a 10+ point lead they were still driving at us. I don't plan on losing to this team again."

"With The D All Over!" Kings Pick Up A Loss.
That headline says it all. The Kings were all over the Grizzles shooters, and yet they still made most of their baskets. Some spectacular plays from Utah to shut this game down. When you're draining thoughts the defense think they've shut down, it makes it hard to switch to offense. Kings were thrown off balance all game.

- 8/24 from three. 33%. Why did the Kings keep shooting from there?
- Grizzles out-assisted, out-rebounded, and out-stole the Kings.

- 13 fouls for the Kings and only 5 for the Grizzles. Does the NBA need to reconsider some of their officials?

- Garcia struggled all game long, 0-2 from three and 5-11 from the field, only gettng 10 points.

The Thunder are not off to a great start. Wavering around .500 the team would not even make the playoffs if they started today. For a team that had championship hopes in the preseason, things are not going as planned. The Thunder currently sit 3rd in the Northwest Division with a record of 11-12.
Westbrook is doing his best to lead his team to some victories but obviously he cannot do it alone. Durant missed a few games in November with a lingering injury, but in the 15 games he has played in Durant has averaged 33.9 ppg. The Thunders next game is against the Cleveland Cavaliers, this Sunday at 6 pm

Embarrassing first game for the Thunder. The shots just were not falling to start the game, no matter what Durant tried to do. Although he came away with 44 points he knows he has to be more efficient. "Under 50% will not get it done for us", he said before heading back to the gym. Scott Brooks was very brief in addressing the media after the game, stating that it was just the first test of many.
Westbrook was also very direct.
"I think between Kevin and I...we scored what, 75% of the teams points? That can't happen too often."
Don't mind that the date is messed up.
