New Year's Day
January 1, 2012

OK ST 41
ND 57

Notre Dame caps off successful season with bowl win

Andrew Hendrix had the best game of his young career with 360 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Andrew Hendrix had the greatest performance of his young collegiate career on New Year's Day against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. But it did not start off as planned. The Cowboys struck early and often to score 21 first quarter points. State quarterback Brandon Weedon gave the Irish defense fits all day. He passed for 564 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions.

After going down 21-3 in the closing moments of the first quarter, Hendrix called the entire team to a huddle on the sideline. "He fired everybody up for sure. He said this is the biggest game of our lives and we couldn't wait till halftime to make adjustments. We had to start right now and score at the end of this quarter" said wide receiver Michael Floyd. Well they did exactly that. In 30 seconds Hendrix threw two passes, one to Floyd for 37 yards and then hit T.J. Jones for a 31 yard touchdown.

Lo Wood picks off Brandon Weedon and returns it for six.

This fired up the defense as well. To start the second quarter, Lo Wood picked off Weedon and returned it 39 yards for six to make it 17-21 Cowboys. The defense made another stop and then Hendrix was at it again. He hooked up with T.J. Jones again on a 69 yard touchdown to take the lead 24-21. OK State answered on a Weedon touchdown pass to go back up 28-24. Hendrix then hooked up with Michael Floyd twice in the last three minutes to go ahead 41-28 into halftime.

Michael Floyd catches one of his two touchdown passes.

Brian Kelly used Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray to run the clock in the second half. Wood really got going in the second half scoring on a 80 yard touchdown run. He finished with 270 yards on the ground. The defense played much better in the second half and was able to limit OK State to 13 points. "It was a huge win for our program. Football never stops though. Got to prepare for next year" said coach Kelly. The future looks bright for the Irish.

Game Notes
NOTRE DAME

-OK State loves to pass. Notre Dame can't stop the pass. This could spell bad for the Irish.

-Irish must put pressure on quarterback Brandon Weedon. Weedon passed for 3400 yards with a 30/9 touchdown to interception ratio.

-This will be the last game for seniors including Michael Floyd. Look for the Irish to get him the ball in his last college game.

OK STATE

-OK State uses the air attack but they also run the ball well with two halfbacks in Jeremy Smith and Joseph Randle.

-Justin Blackmon (82 rec/1112 yds/8 TD) is their best receiver and Irish will try to lock him up.

-The Cowboys also have a solid defense ranking #24 in total yards given up.

Well my fingers are pretty sore after 10 games so thought I'd chime in with my progress. After making the playoffs as the top seed with a 61-15-6 record it was officially time to get down to business. 1st on the list was Montreal. Took them out with regularity. Average 5 goals these games while giving up 4 total. Next you could tell the level of competition was going to be harder and it was as it should be. Washington Caps came a calling and were quite the match up nightmare. I knew if I could shut down Oven Chicken..sorry my wife gave Ovechkin that name. Anyway shutting him down was good the 1st 3 games was ok as he only tallied 1 goal. Next game they won with 6 sec's left. Last game would see Nathan Horton scoring with 4.3 sec's left untying the 2-2 game and would give him not only the game winner but a hat trick. Didn't really want to go to O.T. back to back games so cutting it close is an understatement. Now I get cheap shot artist Matt Cooke and Sid the Kid's Penguins. Beat them 5-2 1st game as this was a 3-2 game for the longest time. And this last game to close out today's game saw me do whatever I wanted at will. Savard scored a Hat Trick in an 8-0 route. Next thread will finish out this season when I get feeling back in my hand. Actually that's closer to to the truth than ya think. I still haven't gotten surgery for my herniated disc which has 3 of my fingers numb and constant pain all the time. Stay tuned for that as well. Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend. Go Bruins!!

Cierre Wood's career day leads Irish over Stanford in thrilling finish

ND 34 STAN 31

Cierre Wood had a career day with 277 all purpose yards and three touchdowns.

Where do I start? I'm having trouble where to start this story on the meeting between Notre Dame and the Stanford Cardinal. I guess I'll start with the magnitude of this win for the Irish. This is the biggest win for Notre Dame in years. Not only did Brian Kelly and the Irish win, they did it in stunning fashion.

The Heisman hopeful Andrew Luck came into the game probable with a strained knee. Well on the first drive he looked just fine. The Cardinal scored on the first drive in under a minute. The Irish were shaken, but settled down and matched that with a drive of their own. Cierre Wood capped it off with a 5 yard touchdown. It was tied up 7-7 at the end of the first.

Harrison Smith picks off Andrew Luck in the endzone for his ninth interception of the year.

The Irish defense stepped up and held two drives to field goals in the second. That made it 13-7. With two minutes left in the quarter, Hendrix led Notre Dame on a scoring drive. He hooked up with Cierre Wood on a 16 yard screen pass for the touchdown. Stanford got the ball back and tried to score before the half ran out. Harrison Smith again stepped up in a big spot as he has done all year. Smith picked off Andrew Luck in the endzone with just seconds left. Irish went into the half leading 14-13.

Irish started the third quarter with a field goal drive to go up 17-13. Luck answered with a 28 yard touchdown to Chris Owusu to take the lead 20-17. Stanford then opened up the fourth quarter with a field goal and went up 23-17.

All game Cierre Wood was utilized by Brian Kelly. The first three quarters, Wood was moving the offense but at a slower pace. When the fourth quarter arrived, so did some breakout runs. Wood tired out the Cardinal defense. He busted three runs of 45 yards plus. Down 24-31, Wood busted off a 53 yard run and got hurt at the end of the play. Jonas Gray then came in and rumbled off a 25 yard touchdown to tie it up with 2:48 remaining.

The Irish defense then came up with their biggest stop of the year. They three and outed Andrew Luck and the Cardinal. Jonas Gray ripped a 17 yard run and Hendrix passed for three first downs to set up the winning kick. Hendrix let the clock run down to :02 and called a timeout. Nick Tausch then stepped up and drilled a 31 yard field goal for the game winning field goal.

Nick Tausch kicks the game winning field goal to beat Stanford as time expires.

" While it is a big win for us, the season is not over for us. What we do in our bowl game contributes to how we will start next year." said coach Brian Kelly. This is the biggest win for Notre Dame in many years. In just his second year, Brian Kelly has the Irish in a great spot for this year, next year, and years to come. As for now, this win will boost up Notre Dame in the BCS. Blue and Gold Illustrated will inform you immediately when news arrives of who Notre Dame will play in their bowl game.

Irish ride Floyd for victory
Three touchdowns from Michael Floyd lead Irish to win over BC

BC 21 ND 42

Michael Floyd gives thanks to a higher power after recording his third touchdown of the day.

Saturday's tilt between Notre Dame and Boston College was closer than the score shows. The Eagles came out to South Bend to compete. They would not be rolled over. The first half was tight with each team matching touchdowns in the first and second quarters. Michael Floyd scored on passes from Andrew Hendrix in the first and second quarter. Boston College answered each touchdown to tie it 14-14 at halftime.

Harrison intercepts his 8th pass of the year and returned it for a touchdown.

In the middle of the third quarter, the Eagles were inside the redzone and were threatening to score. A score would take the lead. But Harrison Smith was not having any of that. Smith intercepted Dan Shinskie at the 2 yard line. He returned it 98 yards for the score. "It was the turning point. No doubt. I can't say enough about what Harrison Smith does for this team" said coach Brian Kelly. The defense came up big in the second half. Freshman Aaron Lynch had the best game of his young career recording four sacks. They were able to sack quarterback Dan Shinskie an eye popping 10 times.

Freshman Aaron Lynch celebrates after recording one of his four sacks.

Opening the fourth quarter, Hendrix hooked up with Michael Floyd for the third touchdown between the duo. Boston College would match on a big pass play from Shinskie to make it 21-28 Irish. Then stepped in the closer. Jonas Gray took over and scored twice in the last four minutes to close out the game.

Hendrix played well completing 60% of his passes throwing for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns. Hendrix continues to progress and is gaining more confidence with each game. He is getting help from a great ground game in Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray. They both again eclipsed 100 yards on the ground. Next week they play #4 Stanford. It will be the biggest game of the year.

Game Notes

NOTRE DAME

-Brian Kelly has developed a three headed monster in the Irish backfield. Look for him to deploy that with backs Cierre Wood, Jonas Gray, and George Atkinson.

-Irish defense should be able to have a good game. Boston College has had weak production from their senior quarterback Dan Shinskie.

BOSTON COLLEGE

-Running back Montell Harris should eclipse the 1,000 yard mark on the Saturday against the Irish. Harris has 992 yards and the Eagles will most certainly run him often.

-Stud sophomore linebacker Kevin Pierre Louis is the leader on defense. He has 8.5 sacks this year. The Eagles will need a big game from him.

Game Notes
Keys to the Game:
BYU:
1. Texas's Right side of the O-Line is depleted, They need to take advantage of this.
2. Texas has a QB that is equal in Caliber to the one at Ole Miss, but the receivers are much better. The defense needs to find a way to shut down these talented wideouts and make them run.
3. Heaps will not be able to hand-off the ball like he did last week. He is going to have to throw and take some deep shots to keep defense honest.
Texas:
1. BYU proved last week the rely on the run, shut that down they have no where to go.
2. Heaps is still only a true Sophomore, he can be rattled and forced into mistakes.
3. Get the crowd into it, the 12th man will be key in keeping both sides of the BYU team off-balance.

BYU Controls The Rebels

Loses Luigi for Game, Run Game Stays Strong

BYU 38 - Ole Miss 10

Jacobson 98 Yard TD Return Sparks BYU Route of Ole Miss.

It was an amazing day for the Cougars of BYU as they went on to destroy Ole Miss, however, it did not look like this game would turn out the way it did early on. BYU recieved to begin the game and drove the ball well on the ground. Everything was looking good until on the third play of the drive JJ Di Luigi went down (Doctors later diagnosed this as Back Spasms and Luigi will be cleared for next week.) BYU has just lost its best offensive weapon, but they still went on to score a Touchdown off of a 9 yard rush by Joshua Quezada. Ole Miss would drive to being close to the endzone before stalling and settling for 3. On the following kickoff, McKay Jacobson (Above) took the return 98 yards for a touchdown igniting the BYU sidelines. Ole Miss would come back with an answer of their own in the form of a 6 yard TD run by Brandon Bolden. The first quarter ended 14-10 BYU. BYU would get the ball back and set up Riley Stephenson for the 42 yard FG. BYU would force a three-and-out and then score again to make it 24-10 BYU at the half.

Heaps did not have a very explosive day, but he converted a lot of key third downs and had a very important touchdown throw. As well, he did not turn the ball over.

Ole Miss would get the ball and drive it before two straight sacks by the BYU defense and a punt. On the following drive, BYU's starting FB Bryan Kariya would come in at Halfback and lead the Cougars on a 10 play, 67 yard touchdown drive to make it 31-10 into the fourth. From then on it was just a lot of ground-and-pound to run out the clock with a late TD. BYU walks out of Oxford victorious, 38-10.

When asked about his teams performance, Coach Mendenhall said, "I thought we did very well for our first game. Heaps was able to manage the game like a seasoned veteran and our O-Line really opened up some great holes out there. Kariya and Quezada were amazing in filling in for Luigi, too. Our defense started slow but to shut out an SEC offense in the final threw quarters was absolutely fantastic by our boys. We just gotta keep getting better because we have a very difficult game next week." That game referring to the Cougars Week 2 game against the Longhorns of Texas.

BYU's defense stood strong in the final three quarters. This is a tacke by Jray Galeai to force an Ole Miss FG attempt. [/center]
We caught up with the usually silent Bryan Kariya, who ran for a career high 110 yards with two touchdowns Saturday, and all he commented was, "Our O-Line did an amazing job, they are the ones that deserve the credit."

BYU travels to Austin, Texas next week to face off against the Longhorns. As always you will be able to see our game preview in the sports section on the Thursday before the game. As always, have a nice day and Go BYU!

Atkinson ignites Irish again
Irish comeback from 24-0 deficit

ND 43 TERPS 31

George Atkinson sparked Notre Dame again with a 95 yard kick return touchdown.

The Fighting Irish got off to a sluggish start in Saturday night's clash with the Maryland Terapins. Right from the opening kickoff, Maryland was on a mission to upset the Irish. The Terps took the kickoff and scored on their opening drive. Minutes later after stopping the Irish offense, Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien again carved up Notre Dame's defense. O'Brien again led the Terps to another score to go up 14-0.

The beginning of the second quarter didn't get any better for coach Brian Kelly and the Irish. O'Brien had the Terps offense flowing. With over five minutes to play in the second, O'Brien launched a 59 yard bomb down the sideline to senior wide receiver Ronnie Tyler. Irish were down 21-0. On top of that, Maryland again added a field goal right after to make it 24-0. With 3:45 left to play in the second, Notre Dame needed a spark.

That spark came from a familiar freshman named George Atkinson. This is becoming routine for Atkinson. Need a big play to spark the team? In steps the freshman. After going up 24-0, the Terps kicked off after the field goal to Atkinson. Big mistake. He returned it 95 yards for the score to make it 24-7. Now the comeback begins. The defense for the Irish then went and stopped the Terps. Quarterback Andrew Hendrix got the ball back with just over a minute remaining in the first half. Hendrix completed a 59 yard pass to receiver Robby Toma and got them to the 33 yard line. With :05 seconds remaining, Hendrix hit Michael Floyd in the back of the endzone for the touchdown making it 24-14 at the half. Irish were back in the game.

Michael Floyd hauls in one of his two touchdowns at the end of the second quarter.

Irish received the kick for the start of the second half. They continued the comeback on the back of halfback Jonas Gray. He scampered for a 47 yard touchdown and made it 24-21. The Irish inched even closer sacking Danny O'Brien on the following series to make it 24-23. After receiving the punt, Hendrix hooked up with Floyd again on a 34 yard touchdown to take the lead 29-24.

Andrew Hendrix operated a great comeback in the second half Saturday night against the Terps.

Jonas Gray opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown to jump up 36-24. Maryland made it interesting driving for one more touchdown making it 36-31 with 4:28 remaining in the game. Brian Kelly then called on the talented freshman Atkinson. "George doesn't have an elaborate package right now. We just have a few plays installed for him. They hadn't seen him yet at running back so I thought I'd throw him in unnoticed" said coach Kelly. Atkinson bolted for a 51 yard touchdown closing out the game 43-31. While it started off scary, Kelly and the staff were thrilled with their resilience. It was a big win on the road for the Irish.

A 3 way trade just went through with the Bobcats, Nets and Kings. Here's the breakdown:
  • Bobcats trade: Tyrus Thomas (to the Nets).
  • Nets trade: Travis Outlaw (to the Kings), Anthony Morrow and a 2014 2nd round pick (to the Bobcats).
  • Kings trade: Eugune Jeter to the Nets.
Here is how it helps the teams involved. With this trade the Nets get under the salary cap, and they had a huge hole at the Power Forward position, Tyrus Thomas will be in the starting lineup immediately. They also get "Poo" Jeter, a young PG, who they'll need since they most likely won't be re-signing Gilbert Arenas after this season. The Kings needed an upgrade at the Small Forward position. John Salmons was having a terrible season and is out with an injury, Francisco Garcia's shooting percentages have been terrible and Tyler Honeycutt has regressed in his sophomore season. Travis Outlaw can start right away for them at the 3 spot, and even though he's not a great defensive player his length will help them on that end of the floor. The Bobcats are rebuilding and looking for young players, Anthony Morrow will get minutes and might even possibly start, plus they get a draft pick. They also get under the salary cap.

Here are stats for the key players involved in this deal:

Around the League:

In the Eastern Conference...
  • The Heat have continued to be dominant. But they just lost Mario Chalmers for up to 2 months with a torn hamstring. It might be time for them to make a play for one of the point gaurds that are available for trades, such as Steve Nash, Jose Calderon, Ramon Sessions, Jarrett Jack or Louis Williams. They also have the option of signing notable free agents like Nate Robinson, Delonte West or Andre Miller.
  • 2 weeks after Ray Allen announced his retirement, Kevin Garnett has done the same. After years of people saying their championship window is closing, this team has finally reached its last stand season. Its championship or bust this season, because next fall the Celtics roster will be looking completely different.
  • The Bulls have been incredible, only 1 loss in their last 16 games. Yet they're somehow still 3 games behind Miami for the top seed. Amazing.
  • The Magic have hit a couple speed bumps after they sped through the gates to a great start to open the season. They are only 6-4 in their last 10 games, including a 1 point loss to last years Western Conference champions the Lakers.
  • The Knicks just lost Carmelo for a few weeks to a sprained shoulder. But that didnt seem to matter, they killed the Lakers 117-77 in their first game without Carmelo.

In the Western Conference...
  • The Thunder are dominating the West, their conference record is 19-5. They look like the favorites to win the West this season.
  • The Clippers have been impressive so far. The most interesting fact is that they're 7-0 in their division.
  • Pau Gasol seems to have found his touch again on offense, his shooting percentage has climbed up since the trade for Richard Jefferson. The Lakers travel to Boston next game, a rematch against the team that beat them in the Finals last year. They've already met once in LA this season, the Lakers lost that game.

Pujols Leads Cards Over Padres

Pujols 10th Inning RBI Single Lifts Cards Over Padres 5-4

The Cardinals started the year off right by defeating the visiting San Deigo Padres 5-4 in the bottem of the 10th. Albert Pujols went 3-5 with 2 HR's and 4 RBI's and was the major factor in yesterday's win. Adam Wainwright went 7 innings with 7 K's and 3 runs allowed but didn't get the decsion.
Pujols hit an early 2-run shot deep into right to start off the season but ex-Cardinal Ryan Ludwick answered back with a solo HR of his own. Then the Padres scored 2 unanswered runs to lead 3-2 in the bottem of the 6th. CF Colby Rasmus answered the call and hit a solo shot to center field to tie it at 3. Then Pujols did it again by hitting his 2nd HR of the day to take back the lead 4-3. But Ludwick wasn't done by hitting another solo shot off of Ryan Franklin to tie it in the 9th. But in the bottem of the 10th, Pujols hit a RBI single that sent Skip Schumaker home to win 5-4. Skip Schumaker also had a great game going 3-4. Tomorrow is the 2nd game of a 3 game series with San Deigo. Chris Carpenter is on the mound vs Aaron Harang, the ex-Reds ace. Below is yesterday's box score. GO CARDS!
