Just a quick update for those of you who are holding out to take part in OS Fantasy Football.

We're still busy putting the finishing touches on it and now plan to open it up next Tuesday, August 25th.

Last time I checked, OS visitors are not fans of half finished, bug-filled products so I figured it would be best for us to spend a few more days putting the final touches on it instead of rushing it out the door just to hit our date. Stay tuned for more info as the new release date draws closer.

Here at OS we are busy building a Fantasy Football game for the 2009 NFL season. When the game launches we'll be bringing you the latest fantasy football news right here on our News page.

We are looking to build a team of 3-4 Fantasy Football Reporters who will be responsible for keeping everyone up to date with all of the fantasy news on a daily basis.

If you're an avid Fantasy Football player and think you would enjoy this role, please send a quick email to matt (at) operationsports.com with some information on why you're the right person for the job.

As many of you will have read in our forums, the new OS T-Shirts are now available to be ordered.

We want to advertise the t-shirts outside of the forums, and the best way to do this is with a small banner that will be located in our left menu.

If anyone is interested in putting together a banner (dimensions 240H x 160W) and submitting it to us we will pick the best one and give the winner a game of their choice (max value $59.99).

We're open to ideas on how the banner looks, however we'd like a picture of the OS T-Shirts (see attachment) to be included, and some text that says "New OS T-Shirts Now Available".

Submit your entries by replying to this blog post.

After a slight delay we have officially launched OS Instant Messenger.

OS IM allows you to chat with your OS friends in real-time by utilizing a Facebook style chat bar that is available at the bottom of all OS pages. The only requirement is that you need to be registered and logged in to see it and use it.

OS IM is the first step towards making interacting with your friends and fellow sports gamers simpler and more accessible here at OS.

If OS IM is not for you, you can disable it by going to User CP > Edit Options.

Not seeing OS IM?
We recommend logging out and logging back in again. If this does not work, you may need to clear your OS cookies from your browser.

When we launched the OS Arenas a few months back we gave you the ability to create a list of friends. On Monday you will be able to make use of your friends list when we launch a new chat bar that allows you to chat with your OS friends in real-time.

Those who frequent Facebook will be familiar with how this works. Essentially there will be a permanent IM bar at the bottom of every page on OS allowing you to see which of your OS friends are online and chat to them in real-time.

There is no need for you to install anything or register anywhere. As long as you are logged in to OS the chat bar will be available to you.

If this is not your thing or you just don't want to be bugged by your buddies you can easily sign out of the chat bar while still remaining logged in to OS.

Here is a screenshot of it in action:

Any of you who have completed the EA survey will have noticed this interesting piece of news:

Quote:
EA SPORTS .com and EA SPORTS World are combining content and services. The new combined EA SPORTS.com will provide ways for sports gamers and fans to interact with their games, compete with their friends, and connect with the greater gaming community and EA SPORTS...24 hours a day, 7 days a week through their consoles, PC's and mobile devices. Features will include:
  • Use the 3D avatar tool combined with EA SPORTS photo game face technology to create your own persistent identity in the world of EA SPORTS online.
  • Earn or purchase exclusive gear from head to toe and wear your team's licensed jersey to show off your true colors.
  • Join a club and/or team or start your own. As a GM, your job is to run your club effectively by scouting top players, scheduling practice sessions and challenging rival clubs/teams in your league.
  • Showcase your accomplishments online by uploading your best goals, calling out your place atop the leaderboard, and collecting trophies and accomplishments showing how you are the best amongst the rest.
  • Put your money where your mouth is by challenging other EA SPORTS gamers for cash or prizes.
  • Access sports news, tutorials, and tips and tricks from the pros as well as everyday gamers.
  • Create custom highlights from your best performances using the EA SPORTS video broadcast tool. The best are selected by EA and given a voice and a flavor all their own in EA SPORTS Top 10 highlights. The community can watch online or download as a podcast along with select EA tracks.
  • Become a fan journalist by creating and critiquing high quality sports and game analysis on The EA SPORTS Fan news network.

This is certainly exciting news for sports gaming. From the above list, which new features interest you the most and which are you not at all excited about?

We successfully completed an upgrade of our database server early this morning. We now have more RAM and twice the CPU power. We hope that this will put us in a good position to avoid any major slow downs during the busy MLB release period that is quickly approaching. Enjoy The Show demo today.

We are looking for experienced coders who are interested in developing some of the exciting new features we have planned here at OS. The ideal candidate will have a high level of coding expertise in PHP and MySQL and preferably will have worked with vBulletin in the past (most of our site's features are built onto our vBulletin forums). Obviously having a solid understanding of sports video games will also be a major advantage as the new features we have planned all evolve around adding to OS visitor's sports gaming experience.

Recently our outstanding coder, Diego, informed us that he would be leaving OS to concentrate on new opportunities. Most of what you see around you here at OS was coded by Diego. His professional attitude and high quality of work will be greatly missed. Diego's departure though opens the door for a new coder to join OS.

Although this is not a full time job, it is definitely a paid position.

If you are qualified and have the time to commit to developing exciting new features for OS please send an email to matt(at)operationsports.com with some information on why you're the person for this role.

I've updated our front page poll with a question that I've been wanting to get everyone's feedback on for some time now. The new poll asks if you're primarily a sports fan (who also likes video games) or a video gamer (who also likes sports)?

Personally, I love sports. I love sports so much that I'm not just content with watching them on TV or participating in them in real life, but I also want to simulate them in the video games I play. So I'm a sports fan who also likes video games. Let us know what you are by voting in the poll in the right menu of our front page or by clicking here.

With Christmas only one day away (it is New Year's eve already here in Australia) and the year quickly coming to an end, I wanted to take this opportunity to look back at 2008 from a personal and professional perspective. I also wanted to thank everyone who has visited OS over the past 12 months and share with you some of our successes.

Personally, 2008 has been a huge year for me. Not only did I drastically increase my involvement with OS, but I also left my job at EA after having spent 4 years there. My wife and I also relocated from Canada back to my original home country of Australia. 2008 was very exciting for me, in large part thanks to the success and growth of Operation Sports.

Here are some interesting stats:
  • Over 3 million unique people visited Operation Sports in 2008
  • They generated over 100 million page views
  • They spent an average of 9.52 minutes on the site each time they visited
  • 82% were from the USA, 5.5% from Canada, 2.2% from UK and 1.2% from Australia
  • 47% used Internet Explorer to browse, 43% Firefox and 5% Safari
  • 91% were used Windows while 6.6% were on a Mac
  • 1024x768 was the most popular screen resolution (30%) followed by 1280x800 (20%)
  • 30% of our traffic came from Google
  • Top search words that led to OS were “operation sports” (9%), “nba 2k9” (4%) and maddenmania (2.5%)
  • Over 27,000 new members registered at Operation Sports
  • Over 55,000 new threads were posted in the Operation Sports Forums
  • Over 1 million new posts were posted in the Operation Sports Forums
I've just recently sent emails to all OS team members thanking them for their contribution to the site. So to Steve, Chris, Chase, Dave, Ben, HD, all of the writers, forum admins including Mill, Fishepa, TJ I'd like to thank you for your dedication and commitment to OS over the past 12 months. Some of you I have worked with closer than others, but as a whole it has been a great deal of fun growing OS with you.

2009 will be a big year for OS, there is no doubt about it. We're well positioned to expand even further based off of the ever increasing interest and quality of the new sports games scheduled for release. We're busy expanding our site's feature set to build off of the new generation of sports games that focus heavily on online interaction.

In closing, I wanted to thank everyone who made OS a regular destination in 2009. It has been a great experience being heavily involved with OS over the past 12 months, and I look forward to continuing this into 2009 and beyond.

Merry Christmas!
