We are now at the end folks. The person who answers this question in the standings will win the game. Here are the standings:

Standings

goallout13 - 3 points
kwrichardson, blaise, JibJab24 - 2 points
asb37, HechticSooner, bryan_05 - 1 point

Again..if you aren't on the list above there is no way you can win the game. But you could certainly play spoiler to someone. Since this question is worth 3 points, the winner will be whoever answers this question. It's do or die time.

So here it is:

Baseball has sometimes gotten a bad rap for being an overly long game. However, sometimes the critics have a point. The event I am talking about is where 17 innings of baseball was played two nights in a row...but both games were not 17 innings in length. This question is not easy, because this is for all the marbles.

I want to know the dates the games were played as well as the final scores and total game times for both games and their records for the year. I also want to know the winning pitchers for both games. And for one more random stat, I want to know the number of double plays turned in both games combined.

Remember, you only get ONE chance to answer the question. And another caveat...if this question isn't successfully answered by the morning, I will up the points to 4, which means anyone could win the game! Good luck!
We are now in the home stretch. At least one and possibly two more questions to go (depending on how this one plays out). Only one person can get points for this one.

Right now anyone can get the question right and be in the game, but if you don't get in now, you have no chance at winning when the final question is posted this afternoon.

Standings
goallout13 - 3 points
kwrichardson, blaise - 2 point
asb37, HechticSooner, bryan_05 - 1 point

My motto has always been you need to know where you came from in order to know where you are going...or something like that. With that said, today's first question is just a straight up trivia question and should be rather easy if you think it through. I want the simple answer to the simple question:

"Who invented baseball?"

This is for double points, so you had better jump in if you want to have a chance at winning the game this afternoon!

Looks like Goallout13 is getting closer to winning with another point earned this past question. That puts him at 3 with a slew of guys at 1 point and kwrichardson at 2 points. Here is the full breakdown:

Standings
goallout13 - 3 points
kwrichardson - 2 point
asb37, HechticSooner, bryan_05 - 1 point

So with that, question #5 will be given to just one person...the first person to answer the situation correctly. The person to answer this question will earn 2 points in the contest. We have just two questions left, so getting this one will put you right in the thick of things. In my opinion, this is probably the easiest question thus far if you have some common GM knowledge. Unlike past scenarios, I am using real players in this one but with a completely fictional scenario. Here is the question:

The recession has hit the Boston Red Sox especially hard in this scenario. They are unloading players at a fever pitch through trades in order to shrink the payroll. The Red Sox are set to trade David Ortiz to the Washington Nationals for a couple of prospects. Ortiz does not like the idea of it and is not going to give you the go ahead even though his contract does not include a no-trade clause. As the GM, can you go ahead and make the trade or are you in trouble here? Why or why not?

Three more to go after this, the standings look like this today:

Standings
goallout13 - 2 points
kwrichardson, HechticSooner, bryan_05 - 1 point

So what about today's first question? You have until the afternoon to post a response...best 3 responses get a point. For this question, there is no one right answer...I'm looking for guys who know their stuff with this one. So basically, impress me with your baseball knowledge folks!

It is July 29 and you are in the midst of a playoff race. Unfortunately you just lost your ace pitcher for the rest of the year due to injury. Your ace was having a fantastic season, with an ERA at 2.88 with a record of 14-3, Cy Young Material. You have some options internally, but none of your players could possibly match what you lost. You are being offered a trade for a superstar pitcher but the price is incredibly steep and will cost you a big bat in your lineup. There is another pitcher out there that is solid and would be a better option than anyone internally, but he is also overpaid and has 3 years left on his contract, his asking price is rather low at this point. Assume there are no free agents who are going to help you in this exercise.

So what do you do? Maybe there is another option you could think of? This is a fun thought experiment, put your thinking caps on and impress me!

Looks like we got us a ballgame! One more question for today..and luckily for you I'm going to stick to GM type of functions for the next few questions!

Here's how the next few questions are going to work, I'm going to explain a hypothetical situation and you have to tell me what the proper move for a GM would be. For each case I will describe, there will be one right answer and a bunch of ok answers.

For the first 3 people who get the RIGHT answer, they will get a point. However, you only get ONE chance to give an answer. I will be back tonight to reveal what the right answer is and reward the people who got the question right. Here goes!

It is the middle of may and your star first baseman, who is hitting .340 and has 12 home runs already has had a family emergency. Unfortunately, he needs to go home for at least 4 days and possibly up to a week. However, you have no infield depth at all on the major league club, at least, no one to play first base. Fortunately for you, there is a hot 1B prospect in AAA, but he isn't on the 40 man roster, which is full. What do you do?

goallout13, kwrichardson81 - 1 point
The game continues. I'm throwing Question #2 is out there now, maybe it will be a little easier? This is a googlers nightmare contest because the information you want will not be in one easy place.

Question: The Chicago/St. Louis baseball feud has been going on for quite some time. What was the score of the first game for the Chicago White Stockings professional club between these two cities and what was the date? Of course, that's not easy enough, I also want to know who pitched that game for the winning club.

(Hint: Teams typically only carried one pitcher in those days)

So here is the deal, we have a copy of MLB Front Office Manager sitting around and in order to figure out what to do with it, I came up with an idea. The smartest baseball mind out there should receive the game!

So what does this mean for you? It means you had better be checking OS throughout the day over the next week as I post questions in my blog. The first person to answer the question I post in an entry will earn a point. The user with the most points at the end of this week wins the game for free.

So with that, here is tonight's question:

Who led the worst division winner (by record) in the six division area in home runs? Give me the team and their record and the player and their number, position and name. Good luck!

After what has been a rather disappointing reaction from gamers and critics alike, MLB Front Office Manager is quickly descending into disappointment category before I even get to sink my paws deep into the game.

I do know one thing, this game is no Out of the Park Baseball. It might even be on the same level as Baseball Mogul. Actually, it isn't, not even close.

EA's first attempt into the console text-sim genre was a colossal failure before they succeeded (at least in OSers eyes) with this past year's Head Coach. Could 2K be on the same path with Front Office Manager?

Some people would still argue Front Office Football is still the better game in comparison to Head Coach. So the true question is: why are companies with billions of dollars and several guys developing games having trouble passing up these one or two man acts?

That's a question to ponder today.

The year of 2008 is quickly coming to a close. That means college football is also done soon and the days will only be getting longer and longer from here on out. The former is a bummer while the latter is very exciting, even though the wind chills here in Oklahoma are down about -10 this morning.

So with 2009 fast approaching, I've assembled my list of my five most anticipated games, be sure to let me know yours by commenting on this blog!

  • Fight Night Round 4: I am usually not a big fighting game fan but come on! Fight Night Round 3 was a favorite multiplayer game of mine and I cannot wait to play this year's version.
  • UFC Undisputed 2009: After reading some of the impressions and watching the videos, this game is definitely for real. Even though I've never been a huge fan of fighting games, there are two coming out this year that have me extremely excited.
  • MLB '09: The Show: Really...what could these guys do for an encore? We've asked this twice already and the guys at SCEA have delivered big each year. Hopefully that trend continues into 2009.
  • Gran....wait...
  • NCAA Football 2010: This year's NCAA was one of my favorites ever. The last time this happened (NCAA 2004) we got one of the worst versions of the franchise ever the following year. Listen EA Tiburon folk....do NOT let this happen again.
  • MLB Front Office Manager: This game is due out next month and I am hoping it is a contender with OOTP 9. There is a lot that could be done with a title like this..I just hope the effort is there to make this game an All-Star.

NFL Head Coach (x 2). MLB Front Office Manager.

You'd think the big companies are going crazy by releasing managerial simulation type of games. However, it seems they've figured out there is a small, but very dedicated group of gamers who will play these types of games.

The mainstream success of Championship Ma....ahem...Football Manager could be a direct contributor to these games being produced as well. I am a huge fan of these types of games -- when done right that is.

I say that because the original NFL Head Coach was one of the absolute worst console sports games I have ever played. That game had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, it was just a mess.

I am looking forward to MLB Front Office Manager...only if we don't get a lemon of a product out of the deal. So what are your expectations for MLB Front Office Manager? Are you going to pick it up? As usual, let me know!
