If you have me on your XBox Live friends list, you probably saw me playing FIFA 07 at different points of the day yesterday. I got a few messages from people wondering just why I was playing an older game. My answer: because I don't own a newer game of soccer, despite having played every edition of FIFA and PES since FIFA 07.
However, with the USA's recent run in the Confederations cup and their impending Gold Cup appearances in America, I can't help but feel the fever. So I popped my old copy of FIFA 07 in to enjoy despite the fact the game was 3 years old.
Over the years, I learned to enjoy the sport of soccer through soccer video games, be it Championship Manager, FIFA, or PES. From what I gather, I'm not alone in learning to like a new sport through sports gaming.
Through sports video games, I have been able to learn the basic ins and outs of each sport and somewhat pick up on some more advanced topics. Which brings me to my ultimate point in this blog: How much do sports/leagues realize how important successful games are to the growth of their brand? Furthermore, should leagues start checking the products of those games to ensure they will be positive influences to the sport?

Games are a huge influence in my life. Most of the time I don't have a chance to sit down and watch a whole football game or baseball game. As a kid playing tecmo super bowl is the reason I was a fan at such a young age. I spend most of my free time playing sport games, not watching them.

Yes I totally agree with you. Most of the reason I'm so diverse in my love for sports is video games. I've always liked football and basketball. But in my adulthood I've found myself liking golf, tennis, soccer, hockey, and even Nascar and UFC.
And in recent years two of the more popular sports have gotten my attention again because of great games, baseball (MLB The Show) and boxing (FNR4). Its been alot of fun.

Sounds like what I did haha. Watching the Confederations Cup made me go out and rent Fifa 09 (Which was fantastic) even though I usually only play Fifa on years when the World Cup is happening. I knew nothing about soccer till I played Fifa 06 for the most part. There are only a few sports games that don't influence me really and that would be a sport like tennis. I can never bring myself to play one haha. A sport should hope that a product is a positive influence for the sport though. It really makes the sport more interesting in the real world.

It hurts to care but someone that has played sports and likes video games usually does. That's the major reason why cheesers, quitters, lag-switching is so frustrating. I'm about competition and it's easiest found online after you win whatever you are trying to win, but it's getting to the point where I'm close to giving video games up. Simulators are outnumbered 80% to 20% at best.

Just playing the demo of Fight Night Round 4 got me to watch the Miguel Cotto-Josh Clottey fight and I haven't ever really watched boxing much in the past.

My knowledge of football grew tremendously from playing APF. Yes, I did play when I was younger - but just concepts kind of came together to better display the big picture of why certain plays are and aren't called.
Sports would be wise to promote their video games. The gaming market is giant.

I am far more knowledgeable about soccer because of the FIFA series. I have come to absolutely love soccer thanks to soccer video games.
