NBA 2K13 has a lot going for it as a game, not the least of which is the incredible 'build your own career' mode via MyCareer that 2K13 offers.
As our own Steve Noah put it, "It just has to be MyCareer."
However, it's interesting to note the staff vote on the Best Game Mode was actually quite split with the winning mode getting three votes out of our panel of ten staffers. Simply put, there was a VERY diverse set of opinions given on this mode.
Madden's Connected Careers did make a run at the award, falling just one vote shy -- my vote was actually the one which broke the tie.
So why did I pick MyCareer over Connected Careers?
My reasoning was simple:
1)MyCareer is a well developed idea at this point, much farther along than Madden's edition.
2)Connected Careers aren't completely 'right' yet. There are features missing and the single player experience doesn't match up to MyCareer's single play experience. We weight things heavily on an individual users experience here at OS because the overwhelming majority of people still play games that way.
3)Connected Careers was innovative, and in a year where most franchises played it safe, you might say that's a reason to say best as well -- but that's not a good logical assumption to make. Connected Careers, while innovative, was flawed. MyCareer is (again) well developed and has a few coats of polish on it.
For those reasons, I voted for MyCareer as the best sports game mode in 2012 and broke the tie, bringing it into victory lane.
Sound off: What mode would you have voted for if given a chance for the best mode of 2012, MyCareer or Connected Careers.
