Gm1.
Florida, currently last in the NL East, dealt Philly a crushing defeat to take gm 1 one of this series. After another disappointing performance by Phillies ace Cole Hamels, which saw the Brewers take a hm series from the Phillies. Brett Myers took the ball in Florida looking to get his team back on track, and pitch them to a win.
Myers however would share the same fate as Hamels the day prior, lasting only one more inning, and also giving up 10 hits allowing Florida to score 5 earned runs: 1 in the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and a 3R 5th. Ricky Nolasco was pitching a good game, but was pulled allowing 4 runs in the B8th w/ no outs. The FLA bullpen would close the door on Philly in the 8th, halting any further rally to tie or take the lead in what was already a BIG inning.
With the game in reach now, Philly brought in Ryan Madson to pitch the B8th and hold the Marlins. At least that was the plan. In Madson's 2 thirds of an inning he managed to give up 6H for 4ERs, the biggest blow being a 3R HR by Cody Ross. Florida would go up 12-5 and that would be the final.

Gm2.
After a 7R loss, Philadelphia sent Joe Blanton to the hill looking to draw even w/ FLA, and draw even they did.
Blanton would continue his consistently good pitching. Allowing only 3ERs on 7Hs through 6 IPs; the 3 FLA runs coming from 3 solo HRs. However, he would be very much in a duel w/ Florida's Josh Johnson - who's team had spotted him a 3-0 lead through 5 innings. Johnson had put the clamps down on Philly through 5 innings, striking out 6, and not allowing a hit. It was in the 6th where Philly would get to him. Johnson would walk Rollins on 6 pitches, and Rollins was able to then steal 2nd. Victorino would advance Rollins to 3rd, and Chase Utley got a slow grounder to short - which gave Hanley no play at hm, and Rollins scored Philly's 1st run. Next up was Howard who Johnson issued a walk to after a lengthy AB, but Werth couldn't extend the inning further.
After a marvelous peformance, and a high pitch count, Johnson was pulled in the B6th for a PH. Florida would get a run across in the B7th after Scott Eyre allowed a 1B and then a bases clearing 2B; FLA 4-1. This didn't stop Philly though as they exploded for a 6R T8th after 4 2Bs, and a 2r HR by Ryan Howard; PHI 7-5. Dave Borkowski would pitch a scoreless/hitless B8th striking out 1. Philly would add an additional run in the T9th and take a 8-4 lead. Chad Durbin came int to pitch the 9th, and the first batter he faced, Hanley Ramirez, took him deep for FLA's 4th HR of the game, but Durbin would settle down and not allow another run. Philly wins 8-5.

Gm3.
Philadelphia starting pitching was roughed up again, as Jamie Moyer was tagged for 5ERs on 8H in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Hanley got FLA started off w/ a leadoff HR off Moyer, which came on a 3-1 count and a cutter that got too much of the plate.
Fast forward to 5th and the Phillies climbed back into the lead after getting 4 runs across; PHI 6-5. After JA Happ came on in relief of Moyer in the B 4th w/ one out. He would shut the door on FLA over 3.2 innings pitched, allowing only one hit. With Philly holding onto a slim lead, Happ got into a jam in the B7th w/ 2 out, and Chad Durbin came in to relieve Happ and face Hanley.
Working his sinker, Durbin was able to get Hanley to ground out for the final out of the inning and hold the lead. With Victorino leading off the inning Philly had a perfect opportunity to add some insurance runs, but left-handed reliever Taylor Tankersley would shut the door on the Phillies in the T8th, and Philly would go into the B8th w/ still a 1r lead. Since Madson had struggled in a setup appearance already w/ FLA, Chad Durbin stayed in to pitch the 8th. This proved to be a mistake, as he was hit left and right giving up 4H leading to 3 earned runs.
Matt Lindstrom closed the game for the Marlins, and Florida took their 1st hm series of the year beating Philadelphia 8-6; who lost their 2nd straight series.

Cole Hamels has worst outing of the young season and Philly falls to MIL 7-4.
VS.
In a game ripe for the taking for Philly. Sending their best pitcher to the mound in Cole Hamels, and facing Braden Looper, who couldn't find the strike zone Hamels just couldn't silence the MIL bats.
Milwaukee would rough up Hamels who was pulled after 4 innings, surrendering 10 hits and 4 HRs for a total of 6 earned runs.
Although Phlly got help from Looper who walked 3 batters through 3 innings of work; throwing 60 pitches after 3 innings. Philly just couldn't overcome the bad performance of Cole Hamels. The bullpen would only allow a hit and run over the final 5 innings, but the bats couldn't keep pace w/ Milwaukee's.

Philly needing to strike back after a dominant performance by Milwaukee sent Chan Ho Park (1-1) to the bump vs Jeff Suppan.
VS.
Both SP's retired the side in order in the 1st. However, in the T2nd C. Park ran into a little trouble after Corey Hart knocked a solo shot for MIL's 1st run, and a few batters later, w/ men on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, Suppan got a perfect SAC bunt down to score the runner from 3rd on a squeeze. Milwaukee's 2-0 lead would get cut by 1 as Ryan Howard went yard on the first Suppan pitch of the bottom of the 2nd. Fast forward to the 5th, and Philly would end up tying the game after a Shane Victorino double scored Jimmy Rollins from 2nd.
Ryan Madson came on in relief in the 8th and pitched a scoreless hitless 2 innings striking out 2, and bouncing back from a very poor outing the day prior. Lidge would relieve Madson for the 10th - his first outing since a BS vs SD, where Adrian Gonzalez solo homered to tie the game. His struggles didn't stop there as a costly error by Raul Ibanez lead to a run for MIL to break the tie, and then back to back doubles by Braun and Fielder would give MIL a 4-2 lead heading into the B10.
Trevor Hoffman, who recorded the final out of the 9th, came on in the 10th for the save. Victorino leading off the B10th, would get the rally started w/ a single up the middle. Utley, 0-4 up to this point, continued his struggles on the day as Hoffman sat him down for the first out of the inning. With a man on first Hoffman elected to pitch to Ryan Howard, perhaps trying to induce a DP to end the game. This would prove to be a fatal mistake as Howard crushed a fastball low and away to right-center for a 2r HR that tied it up. With only one out, and a rattled Hoffman on the mound Philly would get 3 more hits off Hoffman for the win.

Game 1
Trying to continue the winning streak, and extend it to 6 W's in a row Philly sent Jamie Moyer (2-1) to the mound vs Dave Bush.
VS.
Moyer sat down MIL in order in the 1st, and Chase Utley quickly got Philly on the board w/ a solo shot to RF for his 4th HR on the season. Moyer would have a no-hitter going thru 4 innings until Bill Hall singled to RF. No damage would be done to Moyer or the Phillies until the 6th inning where Mike Cameron led off w/ a solo shot to LF, Hardy doubled, and then Braun smacked a 2r HR to left-center. Moyer would get pulled after 6.0IP having. The bleeding wouldn't stop there though, as Ryan Madson became MIL's next slugging victim. Cameron and Hardy went back to back to start the 8th, and before Madson's day was over MIL had manufactured 3 more runs on 5 hits to extend their lead to 8-1. That would be the final in this one as Dave Bush was magnificent in 7.0IP, and the MIL bullpen closed the door on the Phillies in the 8th and 9th innings.

The first game of this series was simmed because I was still using Kansas City at the time, but it resulted in a 11-10 victory thanks to 5 runs in the B9th allowing the Phillies to win.
The first user played game of this series was a duel between to of the NL’s best.
Jake Peavy
VS.

Cole Hamels
This game was my first extra inning affair for MLB 2K9 as it took 13 innings for the Phils to win it. Gregg Dobbs in the bottom of the 9th tied up the game on a PH 2B to score PR Eric Bruntlett from 2nd. From that point both teams would be in a dead tie, until the B13th when Philly had the top of the order coming up. Rollins started the inning off w/ a single, and then Shane Victorino hit a liner down the 1B line which would roll to the corner of the OF scoring J-Roll from 1st, and getting Shane a 3-bagger.
FINAL:
SD 2 8 0 - XBH 2 2B
PHI 3 13 1 - XBH 4 2B, 1 3B
WP: B. Lidge 1.0IP 2K
LP: C. Reinke 0.1IP 2H 1ER 1K
**NOTES**: Bullpen combined for 5 Ks in 4.0IPs.
Hamels: 7.2IP 5H 2R 7K
Peavy: 7.0IP 6H 1R 6K
Phils RBI: 1 (ea) Dobbs, Ibanez, and Victorino. Utley hit two 2Bs, Brian Giles went 2-4 w/ a 2B & RBI.
Player of the Game

Shane Victorino: 3/6 (triple, GW RBI)
3rd game of this series was another extra inning affair.
A walk-off HR by Ryan Howard (off Heath Bell) would give Philly the victory in the B10th.
Both starting pitchers were locked in a duel:
Brett Myers - 9.0IP 3H 7K
Chris Young - 8.0IP 3H 4K
Ryan Madson became the pitcher of record, and got the W after a scoreless, hitless 10th inning striking out 1. Only XBH in this game was Howard’s walk-off HR.
To complete the 4gm sweep of San Diego and extend the Philadelphia win streak to 5 games…
…Philly would need some clutch hitting to win it.
After posting 5 hits through 7 innings, and squandering opportunities w/ runners in scoring pos., Philly would have to play small ball to get that 1st run across the board. W/ one out in the bottom of the 8th C Chris Coste, starting w/ a LHP on the mound, walked w/ one out in the inning. Coste would get pulled in favor for PR Eric Bruntlett, and Joe Blanton, who pitched a fabulous game, would stay in to bunt Bruntlett to 2nd for the SAC. Now w/ a runner on 2nd, Philly had an opportunity to strike, and w/ Brad Lidge warming up in the Pen a run would more or less seal a victory for Philly…Right?
Jimmy Rollins would hold up his end of the bargain, as he sent a 2B to LF which would roll to the wall scoring Bruntlett from 2nd. With life in the inning, Rollins at 2nd, and Victorino coming up w/ a chance to extend Philly’s lead, SD P Chad Reinke would buckle down and get out of the inning getting Victorino to ground out to 2nd.
It was now time for the much heralded Philly closer Brad Lidge to do what he does best, close-out games. However, Lidge would record his first Blown Save of the season, which would also be his first since 2007. Intent on saving the game, and adding a W to the win column, Lidge would retire the first batter of the inning, Brian Giles, who flied out to RF. Adrian Gonzalez, SD’s best hitter, had a different plan though.
Gonzalez quickly got ahead in the count 2-0, and Gonzalez’s ability to change the game w/ one swing had Lidge’s composure faltering.
The next pitch, a 2-seamer on the outside corner, Lidge got over for his 1st strike. Trying the same location again Lidge would miss outside, count 3-1. Gonzalez, looking for his pitch would foul the next two pitches off. With a full count Lidge sent his 4-seamer, clocking around 95-97 for the game, in on Gonzalez, but did not get hit low enough and Gonzalez sent a belt-high fastball into the Philadelphia bullpen; Game tied 1-1.
Lidge would run into more trouble, after walking the next batter, Kevin Kouzmanoff, but would get his 2nd out of the inning after striking out Luis Rodriguez on 4 pitches. W/ Kouzmanoff on 1st, and two outs, Chase Headley would keep SD alive w/ a single to left. With runners on the corners, SD was fighting to end their 8 gm losing streak, and do everything they can to prevent a 4gm sweep. Nick Hundley though, proved to be no match for the Brad Lidge slider as Lidge got Hundley to ground out to 2nd baseman Chase Utley.
The damage was done though…Adrian Gonzalez’s solo HR tied up the game, and Lidge had his worst outing since the 2007 season - taking him 33 pitches to get 3 outs.
With Utley leading off he quickly breathed life into the stands as he sent a single into CF, but Ryan Howard doing what he does best OTHER THAN hit the longball struck out for SD’s 1st out. Jayson Werth hit a slow-rolling swinging bunt to the 3B which allowed Utley to safely reach 2nd, making SD’s only a play a throw to first for the 2nd out of the inning.
Could newly acquired Raul Ibanez become the hero??????
Answer. YES!
With two outs and a runner on second, having stranded 4 runners in scoring pos, Raul Ibanez sent a double to LF which would roll to the corner and score Chase Utley from 2nd.
Game Over! Philly wins their 5th straight, completes a 4 gm sweep of SD, and sends San Diego spiraling to their 9th straight loss w/ still two more road games coming in San Fran.
FINAL:
SD 1 7 0 - XBH 1 2B, 1 HR
PHI 2 8 0 - XBH 3 2Bs
WP: B. Lidge 1.0IP 2H 1ER 1BB 1K
LP: J. Hampson 0.1IP 1H 1R 1K
Player of the Game

Joe Blanton: 8.0IP 5H 1BB 8K
**NOTES**: SD SP W. LeBlanc: 3.2IP 5H 2BB 4K. Jimmy Rollins went 2-4, 2 2Bs, RBI, K. Raul Ibanez went 2-4 1 2B, RBI, K. Victorino - 1 SB, 1 CS. Philly’s last 4 wins have been awarded to their bullpen. PC PHI 118-38; SD 106-34. San Diego has lost 9 straight.

Gil Meche

VS.

Anthony Reyes
After a BIG series win at home vs. the Yanks. The Cleveland Indians paid a visit in Kansas City for the last 3 games of a 6 game home stand.
Gil Meche would take the ball for KC, and start the game off w/ a leadoff walk to Grady Sizemore. Sizemore would steal 2nd, but Meche would not allow a hit and CLE would strand Sizemore at 2nd to end the inning. KC got on the board early after a lead off 2B by Coco Crisp, and a single by Dejesus, scoring Crisp from 2nd; KC 1 - CLE 0. However, Anthony Reyes would settle in after that and get out of the inning w/o giving up any more hits or runs, while striking out two.
Fast forward to the 3rd, and Cleveland would have a big inning putting 4 runs on the board after Johnny Peralta sent a laser down the LF line, barely clearing the fence for a 2R HR. A couple of batters later, Shin-Soo Choo would 2B in two more runs, and Cleveland would take control of this one w/ a 4 - 1 lead. KC would answer back with a run manufactured on a couple of base hits; CLE 4 - KC 2.
After DeRosa reached base on an error, and Hafner singled. Peralta would do even more damage in the 4th after he sent a 2B to the RF gap scoring two more, and pushing his RBI total to 4 for the game. Cleveland would strand a runner to end the inning, but take a commanding lead of 6-2.
KC would not answer back in the B4th, and with 2 outs in the T5th, Gil Meche would face off w/ Johnny Peralta again, who on the day homered once, 2B’d once, and accounted for 4 of CLE 6 runs thus far, and he didn’t stop there…
On a 3-1 count Meche threw a FB low and inside, a pitch he had just gotten a swing and miss on in the same exact location. Only this time he didn’t have enough on his fastball, and Peralta would send another laser down the LF line knocking off the foul pole for a solo HR. Gil would retire the next batter, but his day would be over, and Cleveland had a commanding 7-2 lead.
Juan Cruz would come on in relief, and pitch 4 scoreless hitless innings striking out 4 in the process. KC had a 3 run two-out rally in the B7th after Billy Butler kept the inning alive with a 2B to the RF gap scoring Coco Crisp from 2nd. Mike Jacobs would then hit a blast to left-center for a 2R HR, but Jose Guillen would end the inning w/ a K (his 2nd of the game), and CLE would shut the door on KC from there on out.
FINAL:
CLE 7 9 0 - XBH 3 2B, 2 HR
KC 5 13 1 - XBH 3 2B, 1 HR
WP: Rafael Perez - 2.0IP 4H 3ER 1BB 1K
LP: Gil Meche - 5.0IP 9H 7ER 1BB 1BB 3K
S: Kerry Wood 1.0 IP 0H 0ER 2K
**NOTES**: Perez became the “Pitcher of Record” after Anthony Reyes was pulled after 4 1/3 innings of work (Don’t know why…he had 6K’s). KC PC = 104-32; CLE PC = 117-36. Grady Sizemore 0-3, 1BB 3Ks, 1SB.
Player of the Game

Johnny Peralta: 3-4 (1 2B, 2HR; solo 2R HR) 2R, 5 RBI
