The Potential of NCAA Football 11.
Posted on October 8, 2009 at 11:00 AM.
After seeing the NCAA Basketball 10 trailer that highlights the telecast integration, you know I had to say something.

First I ask the question. Why? Why are all the new EA Sports titles such as Madden 10, NBA Live 10, and NCAA Basketball 10 promoting AUTHENTICITY and NCAA FOOTBALL IS NOT???? Why?

With Madden 10 you get "everything you see on Sunday". With Live 10 you got "Live DNA and new atmosphere changes". With NCAA Basketball 10 you get "CBS and ESPN broadcast integration".

NCAA Football 10, yeah, we got Season Showdown. The single most overrated and stupid feature ever in a football game. It promotes itself really, instead of being a useful feature to the NCAA football 10 video game. Not to mention how Season Showdown hampers gameplay by docking you sportsmanship points for throwing a single pass while up 3 scores.

To sum it up, theres no reason NCAA football 11 cant be the greatest sports title of all time. Add Maddens new gameplay features like Pro-Tak and bringing back the refs, etc. Then throw in NCAA Basketballs telecast integration, and it would be on.

So let me break it down:

FEATURES THAT NCAA FOOTBALL 11 SHOULD KEEP
-Progressive Lighting

FEATURES THAT NCAA FOOTBALL SHOULD ADD:
-ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN regional telecast integration at the VERY LEAST. We dont need all the different announce teams, even though it would be nice. And having CBS would be nice too for us SEC fans. But I will say baby steps though. And maybe team up with FOX for some BCS presentation. Why couldnt they go a step furthur that NCAA basketball. Hell, EA has deals with almost everyone else.
-Pro Tak engine. Bring back the refs and the chain gang. Beef up the sidelines. And yes the poll logic STILL NEEDS TWEAKING.

FEATURES THAT SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM NCAA 10/11
-Gameplan: This feature is the single most fake, cheesy, stupid, and game breaking idea ever. By the click of a button you can make all your players attempt to strip the ball on every tackle. This feature is horrible and almost kills the game for me now. I pray to God that we never see this in Madden.
-Play Guessing Presnap: Another horrible feature that doesnt represent football in any way. It reminds me of Tecmo Bowl. Pick Run Right, Left, or Middle and EVERY player goes right to that spot. It isnt realistic at all.
-Season Showdown: Because its pointless. Its stupid. It has nothing to do with College Football itself. The game should be about the gamplay and presentation, not about seeing whos fans can cheese the most.

I hope the NCAA team is taking notes. NCAA Football 11 has the potential to be a monster!

Much agreed. SS is useless and who really cares about it? This game has so much potential, for once EA needs to get it right for this gen of consoles.

Good blog. The current generation NCAA Football games have been stale to say the least. I hope this changes next year.

I think there is a lot of potential next year. Add more options, tighten up some things and it could be great. I really want the NCAA 09 camera back and the pass speeds toned down. If it wasn't for those two changes I would actually own this game rather than stick with '09.

Great Points. It as worried me that since the devs began interacting with us, I don't remember any of them saying they have a sim or authentic vision in mind. I really want NCAA to be a great game, but it hasn't been on this generation of consoles. here's hoping for a breakthrough 11.

Its just worried me that all other EA titles are trying to promote authenticity, while the NCAA Football team is trying to promote Season Showdown. Its comical.

They need to fix the incoming recruits overalls in NCAA Football also. 3* players coming in at 80s overall is sickening.

I never would have thought about having different broadcast logos for ESPN, ESPN 2, and ESPN U, but I agree that without even having different broadcasters that little update would be a cool addition to the authenticity of college football.

When you watch as much college football as I do it was easy lol. That sports package comes in handy on Saturdays with ESPN, ESPN2, EPSN Classic, ESPNU, CBS Sports, CBS, ABC, NBC, FSN, Big Ten Network, All the regional Fox Sports channels like SUN Sports, FS Ohio, etc.

Things I would like to see the NCAA team add:

1) Classic teams, uniforms, etc...

2) Dynamic weather .. This would be a first in that the weather changes throughout the game (clear to rain to heavy rain to light rain, etc)

3) Mud, when applicable

4) Improved running animations...

5) An option to include a playoff (although I realize the NCAA may not want this)

6) Big win atmosphere...Fans running onto the field after an upset or big win

7) Field-turf animation with rubber particles flying in the air when feet drag, etc.

8) Madden play calling screen (optional)

9) Bring back team-specific entrances and scoring celebrations

10) Improve the presentation...How about a small segment of Gameday with picks and analysis of big games?

11) In-game scores from top 25 and conference with PA announcer announcing conference scores during the action with a reaction from crowd -- i.e. PA announcer announces Michigan losing and MSU crowd (if that is the team you are using at home) cheers....

I know this is mostly cosmetic. I actually love the way NCAA plays, even if the controls haven't changed.

Things that need to be removed or vastly improved upon:
1) Season Showdown -- Agree that it is a farce that you cannot pass after up a certain amount. Stupid

2) Road to Glory -- I get it but this is a wasted feature. I understand that it is an extra mode.

3) Cheerleaders -- I have been to a zillion football games and I have never paid attention to the cheerleaders. The mascots add something, the cheerleaders do not.

4) More school specific marching band formations and realistic songs...If EA could include band entrances (which has nothing to do with the game, I know) that would be sweet (this should actually go into wish list)

I hope NCAA adopts the slower gameplay that Madden used this year to make the game more realistic. I played a game of NCAA after playing a game of Madden last night and it is almost comedy how fast the game plays. Aslo, I know this is not a gameplay issue but the facemask issue is rediculous. The most common facemasks used in college football are not in the game (the Percy Harvin facemask, I don't know the name of it). The Helments that Ohio State and seemingly every other team in college are using (the Speed Helment from Madden) should also be in. If you don't know what I am talking about, look at Julio Jones this weekend. I know it is small, but that is my opinion.

To improve realism, they should definitely have Pam Ward announcing some games, so I can decide to mute them.

Different announcing teams would be awesome though, looks good for NCAA Basketball 10.

Intersesting.... I haven't played the retail release, but downloaded the demo. I'm intrigued by the gameplan feature. Keep in mind, NCAA football is a totally different franchise from madden. Yeah they're built on the same engine, but they are two totally different franchises. NCAA is meant to have loose gameplay that encourages big plays, madden's the complete opposite with it's structured approach.

Well, I think you might be a little bit too tough on Season Showdown--I agree that it should not take the place of improving all the other stuff that you mentioned, but I like the whole school pride aspect of it. And as for the sportsmanship aspect of it, why would you be throwing the ball when you are up by three scores anyway? Run the clock! Plus I also like it because it makes easier to find cleaner, sim ballers than cheesers who no-huddle every play and use other exploits. Everything else I agree with you 100%, and also add a slower game like in Madden 10 to your list.

IMO this game sucks. pretty much everything about it is crap. I find myself playing this game on last gen consoles but thats getting tougher to do now. Game graphics are great. everything else needs to go. Running motion, playcalling (or lack there of), inability to use special player packages, recruiting, presentation, gameplay, & useless mini-games. Hell the ball doesn't even spiral in this game. I'm not lobbying for anyone to lose their job but, new development team please.

A better pregame would definitely help. I remember last gen NCAA Football had Corso putting on the mascot head of his pick just like College Gameday on ESPN.
