Why The Jays Should'nt Have Gotten R.A. Dickey
Posted on December 18, 2012 at 12:09 AM.
Well, most of the time when your team trades for a pitcher who has just won the Cy Young award, it's a good thing. But, I think that the Jays made the wrong move in acquiring Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey from the New York Mets. First off, Alex Anthopoulos basically traded away a lot of the talent in the minor leagues when he dealt outfielder Jake Marisnick and southpaw Justin Nicolino to the Marlins in the blockbuster trade that netted them Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck, and Emilio Bonifacio. In the trade for Dickey, he gives up top prospect Travis d'Arnaud along with top pitching prospect Noah Synderrgard. Not only do I think that Alex Anthopoulos gave up WAY to much to get Dickey, we also have to think that he's 38 years old and we just signed him to 29 million, two year contract. If Dickey decides to retire, we basically just gave away our entire farm system and a catching prospect for whom many people think could be better than current Jays starting catcher J.P. Arencibia. Last but not least, I think that this move is unnecessary, Dickey doesn't have a good record in the American League throughout his career. After the deal with the Marlins, I think that we already had a good enough rotation without Dickey. His addition to the rotation doesn't have that big of an impact and therefore I think that we gave up a lot for a little benefit.
