The Blue Jays’ Double-A Team Scores 8 Runs In A Single Inning, And The Way It Happened Defies Belief

No MLB team has ever done this.

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking for redemption after falling in last year’s World Series, produced one of the most unusual offensive innings seen in professional baseball on Tuesday night in Portland, Maine. Despite finishing the frame with only one hit, New Hampshire managed to put together a scoring surge that overwhelmed the Portland Sea Dogs.

As reported by ESPN, the Fisher Cats scored eight of their runs in the second inning without recording a single hit during that stretch. Instead, they capitalized on a combination of walks, hit batters, wild pitches, and a sacrifice fly that kept the inning alive. In total, New Hampshire scored 10 runs in the inning with only one hit overall and no errors involved in the scoring sequence. No MLB team has achieved such a feat.

There was no other way to react to this achievement other than disbelief. Talking to WGME Ch. 13 in Portland, Sea Dogs president Geoff Iacuessa could not believe what he witnessed.  “I don’t ever remember seeing that, here or any other game I’ve ever seen,” he said via ESPN. “It was crazy. I thought maybe something was going on with the scoreboard and then I checked the game changer and it was correct.”

It Was A Rare Statistical Feat

The inning began with New Hampshire trailing 2-0, but momentum shifted immediately as Portland’s pitching struggled to find consistency. It happened through a series of breakdowns on the mound, as Portland pitchers Hayden Mullins, Jorge Juan, and Cade Finney struggled with command and allowed eight free walks, struck two batters, and threw four wild pitches. On top of that, New Hampshire also picked up a sacrifice fly and a single during the inning.

With runners on base, Sean Keys managed to score after a sac-fly by Ismael Munguia before a walk sent Aaron Parker home. The game was tied at 2-all. Cade Doughtty and Nick Goodwin then reached home play thanks to a hit-by-pitch and another wild pitch, respectively, giving the Fisher Cats a two-run lead, 4-2. The same happened for Eddie Micheletti Jr. and Jace Bohrofen, who extended the lead to 6-2.

Finally, another walk and another wild pitch scored Jackson Hornung and Keys. It was only when Munguia singled on a grounder that New Hampshire tallied its first hit. With his hit, Parker and Ja’Von Ward scored two more runs, officially creating the historic stat line.

According to ESPN, Elias Sports Bureau data shows no MLB team has ever scored more than four runs in an inning without a hit. Portland pitchers gave up five runs without allowing a hit in a short outing (1⅔ innings or less). According to MLB.com, there have only been 16 cases of this. New Hampshire went on to secure a 12-7 victory over the Sea Dogs, finishing with a total of five hits.
