Death of an industry will focus on my take on the *current sports gaming industry:
It's more like Nas' album Hip Hop is Dead. Sports gaming is dead. And the reason is during the 2nd gen console days sports gaming thrived. Today with the 3rd gen console the creativity and effort has been stagnant if not vacant. I'm 29, and my generation and the preceding gen has grown with most long lasting titles. We seen there genesis and progression. But titles like Bill Walsh college football and Coach K basketball have yet to find a true contender.*
Many ppl complain about 2k and games not meeting the level of reality or gameplay of the 2k series; but in my opinion 2k also has gotten lazy. Their baseball series is atrocious from graphics, to gameplay, to design. Even their basketball series needs ppl like shady to spice it up. Shout out to him TOO ( SHADY) his vids are amazing.*
Then I'll talk about MLB The Show. Some say it's the best sim to date for baseball. Well I played baseball and the show is dry. There is crazy chatter on the diamond. And remember we're playing GAMES. Spice it up a bit make it fun and a real *unforgettable. The ISH IS 60$ every year we shell out the cash and our patents aren't paying for this anymore. Some are buying these games for their kids now. But these devs leave out so many facets of the real thing, as if we should be satisfied with what they give us.*
Now, all be it I'm not a Dev, or a graphic designer, so to criticize a man or woman on their craft is wrong, however when you advertise and hype your product to seem as if you have put so much time into improving aspects from year to year, it should be seen.*
I don't need to point out the minuscule *hiccups in many of these titles. If your reading this and play the games you know what they are. Ga Ed have become like the presidential election. The makers run their campaign up to the release day and BAMMM!!!!! Once you choose your effin Stuck thill the next term. And it's your fault if you chose the product because they showed enough video and posted enough podcasts to make us aware of the product.*
BULL!! Why?
Advertising can be very sneaky. And misleading. Cutscenes are not actual gameplay. And animated gameplay is not actual real time gameplay. It's the same as a model on a billboard that has been airbrushed and photoshopped, all she did was provide the cast figure to be manipulated. The same goes with these games.*
It's time they open up the doors and leave no room for changes that occur in real time to pass us as we pray for a patch that will never happen.*
The way I see it is licensing is not as important as a great game. The way we are connected and come together to correct roster mistakes, can go hand in hand with a generic game that is a carbon copy of the the real thing and open it to be manipulated to resemble the real thing. Heck it's been done with Backbreaker.*
Bill Walsh college football used to let you choose between playoffs or bowl games. EA won't do it eff em. Bottom the 9th was a well designed baseball game. Just didn't last. All we need is the cast model and BAMMM!!!! Get the community together to spend about the same time we put into NCAA each year to name rosters and replace generic teams with real teams. Games can be cheap again and last longer. DLC can keep the titles going and generate revenue for the companies.*
Something has to give. Madden not allowing you to edit rosters or not being progressive enough to work with NCAA to make sure the rosters import. This is wack. Madden online glitches even with my 59mps connection. FIFA is my only title I am pleased with over 80%. They try.*
But folks it's my opinion. Stop spending that gwaap, these games are wack. Madden still used children drawn fans and sideline players. Are you serious. The fans do the same thing one diff parts of the grid. Thas wack. The Show doesn't tell you when you win an award or if your selected to the all star game. Trades are wack. It's all dry. Arrrrrgh unsaid I would hark on. Sorry.*
Peace. Please leave a comment.*

Then it has begun. Lol. No for real. It's gotta start somewhere. If we agree there's more. It's just getting out of hand my dude.

I agree with all you've said. I'm a huge fan of MLB The Show but it frustrates me how devs don't put stuff in the game you'd think were easy to think of if you actually follow the sport. That's a reason NBA Live fell, no one who cared about basketball worked on it. I enjoyed 2k's series until it barely changed. I never cared for madden (NFL 2k5 fan). I think NBA 2k and MLB The Show and other sports games are in "refinement" mode but they never add or correct what should obviously be added or corrected. Devs have just gotten ridiculously lazy smh. That's why I don't buy them every year but I follow what the devs claim they are changing. Before I got MLB 12, I didnt have one since MLB 08. Didnt even get NBA 2k12, stayed with 2k11. Also haven't bought a Madden since 08. If they want my $, they better put some effort into their games, especially for $60, which I still think is ridiculous.

Man you have will power. I've been the sucker every year but now with gamefly I won't make that mistake.

I've been saying this for quite some time.
First thing I would blame is that there is no gaming governing body that can prevent game companies from making seven year exclusivity deals with the associations like the NFL. This should absolutely not be happening. I mean seriously? EIGHT FREAKIN' YEARS since 2K released a football game? That is 8 years worth of potential development GONE DOWN THE DRAIN. That is absolutely inexcusable. If this deal was prevented, you would probably have two games that were BETTER than Madden 13 and people would be getting better value games.
When EA saw what damage Konami had done to FIFA's reputation with PES 1-5, they knew they couldn't just hijack the league all to themselves because there are far too many leagues to be able to afford to do that. They were actually ambitious and brought in a new team and head of staff with a new vision who new that if he failed in his first year or so, he was GONE. Now, the tables have turned, FIFA is the clearly better game and PES has been in the doldrums for years because partially they've failed to make a smooth transition to the current-gen, but also because they became lazy and were just content to sit on their hands and offer utter twaddle year in, year out.
Second thing is what I've mentioned earlier - LAZINESS, and more to that - a complete lack of innovation. In fact, what on earth has happened to the games industry? Why is it that the hi-tech industry - in particular: tablets and smartphones - are developing at a rapid rate and the games industry is just ambling along, almost converging in overall feel of a game to OLD-gen? I'm kind of stuck, since I don't like COD or any of these MMO FPS where as soon as the enemy is within your peripheral vision and you turn to take a look, you've been shot dead. I also don't like RPGs/FPS like Skyrim where you're basically slaying and shooting demons and zombies for the whole game. I'd play something like Heavy Rain if it were on XBox, and I like Assassin's Creed but apart from that, nothing. So I'm stuck with playing sports games.
The first 2K game I ever played was NBA 2K5. I LOVED IT. The soundtrack and 24/7 stand out for me the most, but the gameplay was great for that time, and at its price it was a steal. But that was when I was 16 and only beginning to learn beyond what the casual viewer sees on TV. Now, I know how the base set of plays are supposed to work, and I would just like for 2K to actually REWARD me for my knowledge of the game. Animations aren't enough. I need to defeat my opponent strategically as well as being good on the sticks. So many bugs have continued to rear their ugly head in the game. Too many times has 2K removed good parts of their game to make way for features which turn out to be BAD. I don't want to have to find a group of people who are sim, to play with. I don't want to play in a league with artificially-imposed constraints to avoid the fact that parts of the game are broken. When was the last time 2K innovated? Look at their SS feature. It's a good feature yes, but it's a concept that PES has had for nearly a decade. Why did it take so long? I feel this game is 2-3 years behind where it really should be at. When I say laziness, I'm not saying they're not putting enough work in, like Konami after making PES 5. They clearly are. But I think they are being intellectually lazy and uncreative. There's far too much flash covering up the diminishing substance. Of course it wasn't all their fault as EA has had a 3 year existential crisis. That leads on to perhaps the most important factor which is...
...A lack of competitors. It cannot be right that we have a duopoly dominating in the sports gaming market for each major sport. I remember when there were several competitors in a few major sports, and yes even though they were all dominated by EA, it was still nice to have a choice. Now we don't (kind of). It's kind of like what people say of the two party-system in the US, a lot of the stuff that the different administrations will do will be similar because of corporate influences and geopolitical events. I know that it must be much more expensive for companies to develop games for these current-gen systems in comparison to the older ones, but Samsung just seemed like an average Japanese company to me a few years ago, doing a lot electronics, flastscreen TVs etc., but now they have one of the best smartphones available and are challenging with huge companies like Apple. You've got the blackberry, you've got Windows's phone, you've got the Android from Google. Then you have the tablets! Why can't we get this level of competition in gaming companies. Is there just not enough of a demand? Latest stats show that less and less kids are going for video games and are just playing them on everything else BUT the console. Is this something we'll just have to deal with for the future and should we thus just buy the game every two years instead?
WHERE OH WHERE IS THE INNOVATION? THIS IS 2012 AND THERE ARE STILL FORCEFIELDS ON THE BASELINE? COME ON...
NOTE: Yeah, I know...this transformed from a relatively concise reply into a rambling stream of conciousness...that's why I'm putting this reply in my blog as well.

No I agree with you bro. The force fields, the slow editing, the generic sneakers, the BS. NBA live 99 was a good game. Even without MJ rights. But the gameplay was amazing the wire cam made fast breaks feel real. Not like 2k fast breaks where cats just zoom down the court on missed balls.
There should t be a need to alter the sliders. If that's the case lower the price. Or make us stockholders. Because we enhance the games. 2k isnt trash. But I'm not about to take a class to play the game to it's full potential nor sit through tutorials I know basketball. Just make the game playable for laymans or busy ppl.
Madden needs to relinquish its soveriegnty in gaming and step aside. The the madden that had the radio on it was good. I think mcnabbs rookie year. NCAA was good when you could create your school on the game and the better your school was the more likely kids would come there. Not now where we have to buy sh@@. Unlockables were great. But now they want us to shell out money to enhance our experience.
This is why I'm ranting. If I'm gonna give you 100 $ in total. Give me a 60$ worthy game that makes 40$ in DLC worth it. Lastly. Do you remember NCAA Baseball. I thought it was too hard to hit. But I loved that game. It looked great sounded great and best of all the achievements. As you won more games you earned Nike apparel for the team, bats and etc. where is that. Like the last guy said. It's 2012. The depth is missing in these games. We are too knowledgable about the experience. We've either played or followed our teams very closely. NCAA and madden have used the same Nike cleats for like 3 yrs. Cam Newtons Under Armor cleats should've been in Madden 13. The adidas sleeve. And what happened to the linebacker neck collar. Not to mention NCAA players look like underworlds lycans. FIFA and MBA live have the best facial graphics. And creation feature.
When it comes to physics. The best I've seen is (don't laugh) but honestly. On batman Lego. If you haven't seen the physics engine on that. Then check it out. My Lil nephew will
Play that for hours. And I just Wat h him
Cuz it's hot. I won't play it out of principles but it's nice to watch. It's amazing that our sports don't compete with EFFIN BATMAN LEGO PHYSICS. Backbreaker broke the mold but the camera and body modems are wack. All pro football dismantling cut it for franchise, and face it ppl nfl 2k5 is on PS2 and looks like it should be.

Soccer is the only innovative area of sports gaming. Two good choices: FIFA vs Pro Evolution. A healthy competition exists. Very important.

Also, notice both Fifa and Pes are available on PC. You can't be mediocre if you're on PC. That's why PC gaming needs to be supported. It brings out the best.

I agree. PES has stepped uo their tenacity. They have sought the licensing of more leagues and with the demo have made the controls similar but opposite to FIFA. This makes it an easy transition if ppl switch. PES has nice graphics and world wide is far more respected than FIFA. The same way we await madden and NCAA or LIVE to step it up is how they see these few years of PES latency.
But the innovation brought forth in these two FUTBOL titles are far above any titles on the market -sports wise. The Show is nice. But with limited customization of uniforms, and the same batting box animations, and generic cleats kills it after a while. I love how Fifa went the extra mile to incorporate the champions league all the while PES controls the exclusivity of the rights. Why can't these others do the same.
Whether there is an opponent or not they should seek perfection. But since Thier focus is on title after title they rush the release and give us the garbage. Ensued by a hype campaign. Just from FIFA alone I've become a bigger Futbol fan. And the nonsense that goes into out popular sports gives me more reason to love Futbol.
Lastly. The Show didn't add the playoff format. However if the game was created with an open mind for adjustments we could have a format the way we see fit. Or even shortened seasons or realignment.

If you ask me, the gaming industry as a whole is going going down the tubes. Seriously, the amount of greed in this industry is unfathomable with their day one DLC and devious ways they try to get you to pay extra.. Try and explain it to these youngsters is hopeless. Read somewhere that square enix actually tried to leave consumers with a cliffhanger of an ending unless they bought DLC. Again, I read this somewhere so idk for a fact. Just like Bioware, people defend them and blame EA but HEY, they signed their souls over to the devil, what did they expect!? They didn't have to join EA... I'm an old school gamer too and it pisses me off b/c the devs these days are around our age, they grew up gaming too, they know what they're doing, just look at the parties they have, you know old school devs didn't have time ride around the studios on tricycles like that one dude I saw in a Madden dev video. Yeah, they always complaining about how they work hard, if they work half as hard as they say they do, how come they smiling all the time ya know? lol Wheres the bags under their eyes? LMAO, looks to me like everyday is a party and I think thats why so many people defend them. They see they got the life and want to be them and defend them in hopes they will get invited to the next big bash. Tell me, whats so bad about being able to hang out with the stars and NFL, NBA, MLB, players?

I'm sorry but NBA 2k shouldn't even be close to this conversation. They innovate and improve every year. Seems like you have more of a problem with Madden or EA games.
Death of an industry? Psshh. Sports games aren't going away. So long as there's passionate fans for the sports they represent, those same fans will want to take that passion and competitiveness to the console. There's so much potential for sports games. More so with online multiplayer than offline.

I respect your opinion. However my gripe with 2k is graphically. Look at the generic clown shoes. With all of the contracts guys are getting today no one should have generic shows. Does it affect gameplay. HECK NO. It's all ascetics, have you created a team on 2k? That aspect needs improvement. You must not have read the earlier articles. But I gave props to 2K they do a great job of making the game yours. I played 2k alot this year despite being horrible at it. I just won't dedicate time to learn and train on it. It's a game bro. Not life.
If 2k had LIVE's graphics there would t be a better game. But FIFA wins every year for a reason.
You talk of online gaming. Uhh have you been playing the past few years. Online gaming spirts outside of Soccer is a wasteland for cheesers. Manipulation of games weaknesses are easily exploited. Glitches as well. My article DEATH OF AN INDUSTRY STANDS FIRM. I say this because like hip hop the best is behind us. We've gotten more advanced as a civilization. And more and more ppl choose graphic design as an education. But look at what is coming out on these 3rd gen consoles. Stop fighting and being a consumer. Think constructively. At the end of the day lets have fun but not at 69$ wasted

So shoes, accessories, and aesthetics now is equal to dying industry / best is behind us?
But yeah I understand we always want more out of these games. But I think franchises like NBA 2k deserve a lot of credit too for continually improving their game and listening to the fans. We're probably gonna have to wait for the xbox720 for better graphics cuz xbox360 probably maxed out. What's behind us? Let's see.... playing low graphic Nba games, no 5on5 human multiplayer, no signature moves, less customization, worse AI, etc etc. I say look to online because online has the most potential for growth and new game modes like Crew Leagues would take nba 2k to a whole new level.

I feel you. Your right. I was saying the esthetics aren't everything. Well see With 2k13. There throwing alot at us right now. And I believe NBA LIVE either is a wrap or gonna come hard. 2k brought out the big guns this year as they barrage us with more and more. It's cool. But remember Madden did the same.
