Midway Tackles Mature-Themed Football With BLITZ®: The League™
New Football Game to Feature Level of Intensity Not Found in Licensed Sports ProductsCHICAGO – February 22, 2005 – Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading interactive entertainment software publisher and developer, announced today the development of Blitz: The League, a new, unlicensed videogame exposing the harsh realism and troubling, behind-the-scenes stories of a fictional professional football league. Blitz: The League has been in development at Midway's Chicago studio for the past year in collaboration with a writer from ESPN's controversial "Playmakers" TV series. Blitz: The League goes behind the glitz and glamour of the game through a revolutionary campaign mode that explores the on-field violence, off-field fallout and front-office politics of professional football. Blitz: The League is scheduled for release Winter 2005 on multiple videogame console platforms.
"Midway's Chicago studio has laid the foundation over the past year for what is the ultimate alternative to watered down NFL sanctioned football games," said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. "No longer bound to the NFL license, there will be no league restrictions on content and gamers will finally experience what makes playing a football videogame really fun: off-field controversies, dirty hits, excessive celebrations and much more. Blitz: The League buyers will be assured of one thing - our game will include all the gameplay and fun the NFL won't allow."
About Blitz: The League
Blitz: The League will feature a powerful story mode that, for the first time ever in a football videogame, explores the realism, lifestyle and drama found in professional football. Players will take the helm of a downtrodden football franchise and retool the players and coaching staff in a quest to guide them to the league championship. Additional features include intense multiplayer action with head-to head online play and complete customization of players, teams, stadiums and more.

Game Chronicles has posted their review of Crash 'N' Burn, giving it a overall score of 7.1 out of 10.
"I’m not going to blow exhaust up your tailpipe. Yes, there are better racing games out there, but that doesn’t stop me from recommending Crash “N” Burn to anyone who is looking for a non-serious racing title that focuses on wrecks."
Game Zone has posted the following:
- Major League Baseball 2k5 Interview (PS2 & Xbox)
"As far as pitching goes we really went all out this year with K-Zone Pitching. The way that works is not only does it look great, but it gives you control over every aspect that a pitcher would have."
- NASCAR SimRacing Interview (PC)
"NASCAR SimRacing provides Telemetry exactly as real race drivers would get. Telemetry provides players with very detailed feedback about their car and driving style. Multiple laps can be overlaid and compared exactly at any point of any lap."
Games Radar has posted their review of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, giving it a 4 out of 5.
"It's graphically a little perfunctory at times, and the sounds are a bit naff on occasion (the squawking of seagulls comes to mind), but if you fancy a bit of golf on your DS, you really can't go wrong."
Worthplaying has posted the following:
- Fight Night Round 2 Screenshots (PS2, Xbox, GameCube)
"EA announced today that Bernard Hopkins, the Middleweight Champion of the World, will serve as the official spokesman and cover athlete for EA Sports Fight Night Round 2."
- RPM Tuning Screenshots (PS2, Xbox, PC)
"Get behind the wheel and be ready to live numerous driving experiences in Los Angeles; choose your car to be fully customized: add loads of new tuning elements either on the body or in the mechanics of your car."
- Fight Night Round 2 Preview (PS2, Xbox)
"The damage model employed here is another major face-lift. Individual punches will affect, swell and cut the areas they hit, so if you start getting a little mouse under your left eye, be prepared for your opponent to start popping away at that wound, trying to get it to open up and bleed."
Gamers Europe has posted their review of ESPN NFL 2K5, giving it a score of 8.5 out of 10.
"What separates ESPN NFL 2K5 from mediocre American Football games is the fact that every movement made by every player feels like it is based upon some calculation of momentum. Regardless of whether you wish to tackle the game’s in-depth franchise mode, or return once or twice a month for a quick blast, there is one word that can sum up the experience: solid."
ToTheGame has posted some screenshots of WWE Wrestlemania XXI.
"The WWE experience has never been more lifelike with Superstar voice-over and commentary, an all-new pro-reversal system and motion capture technology making this the most realistic looking grappler to date."
3DAvenue has posted their review of Pro Rugby Manager 2, giving it a overall score of 88 out of 100.
"Pro Rugby Manager 2 takes everything that was superb about the original game and improves on it to make an even easier to play simulation. The inclusion of licenses helps the game but it would be nice to see a few more from outside Europe as well."
GameBiz has posted their review of Pro Evolution Soccer 4, giving it a score of 90%.
"This game is so good it’s almost better than real footy … well not quite. But regardless this is the game for anyone with even a remote interest in football. All the players and teams are there from the major leagues worldwide. Frankly, if you are interested in football and haven’t bought this game yet then I suggest you start saving your pennies."
GameArena has posted their preview of Forza Motorsport.
"It’s good to see a healthy level of respect for Polyphony Digital and the GT franchise from Johnson. While it can be argued that Forza and Gran Turismo 4 will be held against each other by race fans, regardless of your system patriotism, there’s no denying the impact of the GT franchise, and Johnson isn’t afraid to appreciate what the series has accomplished."
Eurogamer has posted the following:
- UEFA Champs League 2004-2005 Review (Xbox - 6/10)
"We could go on, but that really is pretty much it. You win the Champions League. That's the point. This is a slick, professional game made to allow those that dream of wearing a United number 9, flirting with Del Piero and dumping him with a quizzical expression in the midfield, then leasing a screaming shot from 30 yards to baffle the keeper, singe the net, reduce the Stadio Delle Alpi to chaos and take glory back to Manchester. It's a good game because FIFA is a good game, and EA produces licensed video game products better than anyone else in the world. But if you own FIFA you're buying it simply for the branding and the thrill of "being in" the Champions League, and your affair with it will be fleeting. As fleeting as the event itself, in reality."
- SEGA to Publish NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 (PC)
"SEGA Europe is set to publish NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005 this summer on PC/Mac, full of new features and revisions - many of which were influenced by feedback from fans of last year's Eastside Hockey title."
